Direct discrimination
Direct discrimination happens when someone is treated unfavourably because of a personal characteristic protected by the law. Direct discrimination often happens because people make unfair assumptions about what people with certain personal characteristics can and cannot do.

Indirect discrimination
Indirect discrimination occurs when an unreasonable requirement, condition or practice is imposed that disadvantages a person or group because of a personal characteristic

Discrimination is treating, or proposing to treat, someone unfavourably because of a personal characteristic protected by the law. This includes bullying someone because of a protected characteristic.


Types of discrimination



You can be discriminated against directly or indirectly. In a lot of countries it is against the law for someone to discriminate against you because of a personal characteristic that you have, or someone assumes that you have. These personal characteristics are things like age, race, disability, physical features and political beliefs.


It is also against the law to sexually harass or victimise someone, or to vilify someone because of their race or religion.




Discrimination in the workplace

Let’s first look at where discrimination can occur. An example we notice in everyday life is salary differences! There are often obvious salary differences among across genders and race groups. In the workplace, there is sometimes wage discrimination. An example of gender wage discrimination is when an employer pays a woman less than a man for the same work.

How can we avoid the discrimination?


Legislators have enacted a number of policies to reduce discrimination in the workplace and in social settings. However, racism, sexism, ageism and other forms of discrimination are still common. You can avoid discrimination socially by thinking about your words carefully and cultivating openness toward other people, especially those who differ from you; similarly, avoid discrimination at work by setting objective qualifications for positions and instituting policies against workplace harassment in all forms.
