Be sure to take relevantemergency phone numbers and yourpolicy number/details with you. 2. Get advice about Vaccines: Yourdoctor can tell you what medicine you’llneed to take to prevent malaria. And it’simportant to use bug spray at sunsetand sunrise, which are the key times forgame drives. Another tip: In addition tosundowners being just plain awesomeon safari, tonic has quinine, so a gin andtonic might help too!3. Food Insight: One of the first thingspeople ask about when travelling toAfrica is the food. Always check withyour travel agent or call the lodge orhotel that you’re staying in and confirm. But lots of places have gluten-free,dairy-free, and vegetarian options.T H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O NAs the saying goes, "It's better to be safe, than sorry." we know this only too well asagents . A Travel Tip: before you leave home:check with your service provider thatyour phone is registered forinternational roaming, as well as compatible with the networks in Africa. Most operate on GSM digital networks, running at a frequency of 900 MHz (andsome 3G networks too). If your phone isa dual or tri-band GSM phone it willwork just fine. 6. Water - Drink bottled water. You arealways safe drinking the bottled waterthat is readily available at all the campsand lodges. Carry a bottle of water withyou at all times – including on transfersbetween camps. If you are at allapprehensive about the quality of waterwhere you are staying, check with thestaff. And if the water is not treated orbottled, then avoid ice in your drinks orcleaning your teeth with the tap water.Take water purification tablets foremergency use if you think bottledwater will not be available. The safariindustry is making a concerted effort toreduce the use of plastic water bottles -try to work with them.T H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N

C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KIt’s important to know how long you actually want to be on safari. There are a number offactors to consider, but, of course, the longer on safari the bigger the budget required. Some people are unsure about safaris so would like an introduction as part of a longertrip. South Africa, for example, can work perfectly for this, as there are so manyexperiences available and areas within the country, so you could just do three-nightsafari as a taster...If wildlife is your passion, for a first timer, I would say a week on safari issufficient. Focus on the 2 or 3 main areas within the country that are renowned for abundantgame viewing, so you can maximize your time. This could be combined with a beach stay or cultural/city experience, if you want to stayfor longer. Kenya works really well for a safari and beach holiday, whilst somewhere likeBotswana links really well with Victoria Falls. If this is a lifelong bucket list dream and will most probably be the only time you get todo this then by all means consider longer, but I'd still say make 10-12 nights themaximum T H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N

C O N T A C T Y O U R L O C A L A G E N T T O B O O KThere isn’t much of a dress code on safari butcasual and loose-fitting clothing is definitely amust for these trips. Remember you’ll bespending long days on the trail of wild animalsand so comfort is therefore essential.Depending on the time of year, warmer clothesmay be necessary due to cold winds in winterwhile in the summer shorts, t-shirts and plenty ofsun cream to shield your skin from the rays arerecommended. There are also early morningstarts to keep in mind, too. Before sunrise, temperatures may not yet be very high butgetting up for a trek at this time of day is highlyrecommended as animals congregate for earlymorning drinks and dips in rivers and pools.Later in the day temperatures may increase. Thismeans bringing layers of clothing that aren’t tooheavy is a great idea. Keep a jacket with you, too,if you visit the Highland areas and in gamereserves, and remember that even if it’s warmout, speeding through the plains in a 4×4 bringswith it, its own cold breeze. While waterproofsare recommended for rainy season.Aside from the types of clothing to bear in mind, the colour is something important to considertoo. On safari, dust and red soil can quickly stainwhite clothes and if you’re on a trip with plentyof stop-off points, your stays in the lodges canoften be too short to clean your clothes at nightand have them ready for the next day. So planahead to make sure you have enough cleanclothes and bring darker colours so as not to ruinthem before you bring them back home. It’s also useful to think about protecting yourselffrom mosquitoes, especially during the eveningand at night. In the daytime, protective clothingand skin repellents are highly recommended.T H E M I N I M A G - A U G U S T E D I T I O N
