COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANTS Reaching our full potential starts with ensuring every individual has the opportunity to succeed We partner with nonprofits stakeholders and donors to cultivate thriving and collaborative communities celebrate diverse perspectives and create clear paths to economic security and well being for all Community Impact Grants formerly known as Sturgis Competitive Grants are made from the unrestricted pool of resources at the Sturgis Area Community Foundation Grant decisions are intended to support the mission of the Community Foundation to enrich the quality of life for all people in the Sturgis area Grant committees review requests for proposals on a quarterly basis Grant application deadlines for committee review are July 1 October 1 January 1 and April 1 Effective June 2021 the following areas of emphasis are selected for Community Impact Grants to improve the quality of life in the Sturgis area Educational Attainment and Career Readiness These are initiatives that enhance our local education system improve kindergarten readiness contribute to a well educated workforce and drive upward social mobility for future generations Examples include but are not limited to projects supporting 10 Early Childhood Development Education K 12 Career Awareness Exploration K 12 Internship Apprenticeships Support for parents and vulnerable populations Why Educational Attainment and Career Readiness Community Development and Engagement In Building a Vibrant Community Quint Studer writes These are initiatives that enhance quality of place engaging residents and visitors A strong education system is a critical part of building a strong community In fact it s the foundation for almost everything that will happen in the future When we do a good job teaching the children in our community we are training tomorrow s workforce A well educated workforce is good for local businesses Many studies show that that well educated workers are more likely to be productive high performing law abiding and healthy Well educated communities attract investment Businesses looking to set up shop or relocate favor communities with high graduation rates A strong education system creates upward social mobility Children who want to go to college or enter the workforce will be prepared to succeed A whole community of well educated thriving citizens attracts development and good jobs which in turn attracts more educated thriving citizens SACF 2020 21 Annual Report Examples include but are not limited to projects supporting Vibrant downtowns Arts and cultural activities Parks and trails Why Community Development and Engagement Engaging people to love where they live creates longterm economic and social benefits for the entire community Quality of place is essential for economic growth and community prosperity Additionally the Community Foundation will consider requests for initiatives in the areas of neighborhood revitalization and housing and talent attraction and retention
WELCOME HOME BABY BAGS St Joseph County Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect received funding to provide Welcome Home Baby Bags to new parents throughout our county In collaboration with the Great Start Collaborative these bags provide new parents with children s books aimed at promoting connections between babies and caregivers while also enforcing safety messaging and education with parents CASA FOR ST JOSEPH COUNTY FOSTER CHILDREN There are currently 177 children in foster care throughout St Joseph County With grant funding for Court Appointed Special Advocates of Southwest Mich we hope to improve outcomes and give some of our county s most vulnerable children the support they need to thrive Research shows that children who have been assigned CASA volunteers are more likely to be adopted permanently 50 less likely to re enter the foster care system performing better in school spend on average 7 5 less months in foster care than those without a CASA 90 less likely to have their own children in the foster care system STURGIS HELPING HANDS BACKPACK PROGRAM For 11 years Sturgis Helping Hands has helped meet some of the most basic needs of local children and families Through its Backpack Program Sturgis Helping Hands provides backpacks of food and essentials that ensure students in need have access to meals on weekends and over the holidays The program is run by volunteers which ensures 100 of funds granted will directly support food for local children and their families Solving the local challenges of today poverty educational attainment hunger means investing in strong outcomes for the workers parents and leaders of tomorrow Achieving strong outcomes for the next generation happens by connecting what today s children and families need at home at school at work and in their communities By providing competitive grants we aspire to help grantees make measurable improvements in children s lives that will impact our collective future 12 SACF 2020 21 Annual Report SACF 2020 21 Annual Report 13
CITY OF STURGIS PUBLIC FIREPLACE rant funding supported the installation of an outdoor public fireplace in G downtown Sturgis and contribute to the overall goal of creating a sense of place in our community including spaces that make people want to experience our downtown The fireplace is part of a Power of 10 placemaking strategy The idea behind this concept is that places thrive when users have a range of reasons 10 to be there These might include a place to sit playgrounds to enjoy art to touch music to hear food to eat history to experience or in this case a fire to huddle around road to restoration sturges young center for the arts For more than 50 years the Sturges Young Center for the Arts has served as a key cultural asset to local communities As the Sturges Young continues its Road to Restoration grant funds from the Community Foundation will provide new acoustic panels that will improve the sound quality of future events in this beloved space Downtown Development Authority Engaging Downtown Sturgis Area Community Foundation aspires to build a community where individuals seek to live work and visit Through grantmaking we hope to create public spaces that promote health happiness and well being for all who call the Sturgis area home 14 SACF 2020 21 Annual Report The goal of this project is to foster a robust city center in Sturgis Grant funding will support opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with their community through outdoor events and cultural experiences planned in downtown Sturgis

INSPIRING ADVENTURE INTRODUCING THE DANIEL E MARTIN FUND During his life there wasn t much that Dan Martin did not embrace with a healthy dose of enthusiasm and full sense of adventure Dan was a hunter skydiver rock climber horseback rider deep sea diver sailor and so much more When he passed away in May 2021 following surgery for a double lung transplant Dan s family wanted to celebrate his life in a way that would reflect his lifelong love of adventure That s why the Martin family worked with the Sturgis Area Community Foundation to establish a permanent field of interest fund in Dan s name The Daniel E Martin Fund will exist to support charitable programs and initiatives that help residents fuel their own sense of adventure in the areas of recreation and entrepreneurship About Daniel E Martin Following graduation from Sturgis High School in 1967 Dan graduated from the Coastal School of Deep Sea Diving in Oakland CA For eight years in the 70 s he worked in the commercial diving industry around the United States and in the North Sea A NAUI Scuba Diving Instructor for more than 50 years upon his return to Sturgis he owned and operated Martin Products Company in Sturgis Dan also owned the Sturgis Hot and Now for many years He was extremely adventurous but most importantly he was a family man shares his daughter Kirstin To sum him up is to tell you that he made sure that his kids and grandkids knew that life was an adventure and he gave us all the opportunities to find that adventure in whatever form suited us best A voracious reader and lifelong adventurer Dan loved adventure sports and even climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in 2001 He sailed his boat named the Craiglush all over Lake Michigan The Daniel E Martin Fund will now continue Dan s love of adventure by providing annual support for programs and projects in the areas of recreation and entrepreneurship both of which were passions for Dan who loved to encourage others to face their fears The Martin Family hopes that through the work of Dan s fund more people might be encouraged to do just that face fears experience adventure and live life to the fullest just like Dan did In later years he began hunting elk deer and birds with his Brittany Spaniel Angus Dan loved his Up North condo and skiing at Nubs Nob with the family He friended people everywhere he went with his quiet kindness wise counsel and endless experiences A Meaningful Legacy SACF 2020 21 Annual Report 21
DONOR ADVISED FUNDS A Donor Advised Fund is a giving vehicle that provides immediate tax benefits while allowing you to support charities of your choice through grant recommendations on your timetable Donor Advised Funds are the most efficient cost effective alternative to private or family foundations FUND LIST 22 Animal Care Fund James Jeannie Gerchow Fund Doe Felt Fund Mighty Matt Keyser Fund Raymond H Dresser Jr Gretchen M Dresser Fund Windy City Fund Graydon C Marion R Fox Fund McClain Oster Memorial Fund Newell A Grace A Franks Fund Paul Jean Casault Family Grant Fund SACF 2020 21 Annual Report About the Initiative TOGETHER WE GIVE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION INITIATIVE GRANTS 113K TO LOCAL NONPROFITS On Tuesday December 1 2020 Sturgis Area Community Foundation and its affiliates hosted Together We Give 2020 the Foundation s firstever Giving Tuesday event With support from Sturgis Bank Oakleaf Financial Services and Super Hits WBET 99 3FM the Community Foundation announced more than 100 000 in grant funding for local nonprofits and charitable programs throughout St Joseph County Our goal for this initiative was to bring community members and Foundation donors together in a positive way and to connect that support to our nonprofit partners who we know need this funding more than ever said Lindsay Richardson Executive Director of the Community Foundation To be considered for a Giving Tuesday grant organizations were nominated by community members throughout the month of November More than 600 nominations were submitted on behalf of dozens of organizations Though only one nomination was necessary for an organization to receive funding Sturgis Bank and Oakleaf Financial Services provided awards for the two organizations receiving the most community nominations This year s top nominated group was ROOTED of St Joseph County winning an award of 5 000 with 78 nominations received Youth for Christ of Southwest Michigan was runner up with 66 nominations winning an award of 2 500 No matter the number of nominations received those nominations that did come in were incredibly meaningful and reflect the important impactful role that nonprofits play in our local communities said Richardson In total 34 organizations received grants totaling 113 885 Grant dollars will support charitable programs during a time that has been extraordinarily difficult for nonprofits to fundraise SACF 2020 21 Annual Report 23

LAURA PENNER RECEIVES JOHN OSTER MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING 32 Longtime Sturgis educator Laura Penner was selected to receive the John Oster Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching The award is given annually to one educator who is nominated by community members based on a dedication to professional development community service and teaching Mrs Penner s compassion for her students goes above and beyond any requirement of a teacher She truly cares about the success of each of her students She is an asset to the community and school About the Award About Laura A Sturgis native Laura is a graduate of Sturgis High School and of Western Michigan University where she earned her Masters degree in education She has been an exemplary teacher with Sturgis Public Schools since 1997 where she is known for her genuine care and dedication to her students A leader in and out of the classroom Laura has served as a coach to the Sturgis High School swim team and leader to the high school s Business Professionals of America BPA program for more than 20 years When she is not teaching or coaching she volunteers with community blood drives Thurston Woods Village and numerous community fundraisers Nominations for Laura included many colleagues and community members with a common theme a willingness to go above and beyond for her students One nomination in particular noted SACF 2020 21 Annual Report The John E Oster Award for Excellence in Teaching is funded through the John E Oster Memorial Fund a permanent endowment of the Sturgis Area Community Foundation During the lifetime of John Oster he was deeply interested and concerned with appropriate recognition and reward for teachers who taught in the Sturgis School District Prior to his death he discussed the means of implementing a fund which would provide an endowment to be given each year to a teacher in recognition of the teacher s outstanding contribution to the Sturgis community and to the education and training of students in the Sturgis School District The vision of the award was to also provide all teachers with the incentive to strive to improve their professional training and to reward them for extraordinary contributions made to improve their level of education John s vision was made a reality by his wife JoEllen Oster when she established the fund 1981 in his memory Laura is the 40th recipient of the Oster Award
STURGES YOUNG LAUNCHES MATCHING GIFTS CAMPAIGN This spring and summer the Sturgis Area Community Foundation matched all gifts made to the Sturges Young Center for the Arts in support of its Road to Restoration campaign The campaign hopes to raise 300 000 to support capital upgrades to the now 66 year old facility Anyone who has spent time at the Sturges Young Center for the Arts has fond memories of the shows they ve experienced in the main auditorium or the time they performed on the stage whether in band a show or dance performance said Sheila Bolda Executive Director of the Sturges Young Center for the Arts The building on the corner of Nottawa and West Street is more than just four walls and a stage it is a collection of shared memories and experiences that shape and enrich our lives in a variety of ways The Sturges Young first kicked off its Road to Restoration in 2019 Since then campaign funds have enabled a renewal of the main lobby lounge and ballroom Now after a particularly difficult year due to the pandemic Bolda and her team are eager to continue making progress on the building s restoration and plans for the future This year s renovations will include upgraded restroom facilities and new projection equipment for both the auditorium and ballroom 34 SACF 2020 21 Annual Report The restroom renovations are much needed in the time of Covid 19 said Bolda sharing plans for replacing fixtures with touchless faucets and flush valves to help reduce the spread of germs We also plan to make the family restroom more ADA compliant and accessible for patrons with mobility challenges Enhancing our projection capabilities in both the main auditorium and ballroom space would allow for more film screenings travelogues and business presentations once again engaging the community through our shared love of film and the visual arts Both projects come with considerable cost To assist the project the Sturgis Area Community Foundation s Newell A and Grace A Franks Fund continues to match up to 150 000 in gifts Our hope is to engage the community in working together to restore a facility that we all love and hope to see thrive for generations to come says Lindsay Richardson Executive Director of the Sturgis Area Community Foundation We re excited to offer community members a chance to double their impact with a dollar for dollar match SACF 2020 21 Annual Report 35
TEAMING UP WITH THE TRADES COLLABORATING ON HOUSING If you tried to buy a home in St Joseph County this year chances are you felt the need to act fast that s assuming you were lucky enough to find a home that met your needs Like the rest of Southwest Michigan the housing inventory here is low driving up prices and compelling homebuyers to make decisions quickly While this environment brings positive news for home sellers housing shortages can make it difficult for lower and middle income families to access quality housing Now thanks to the Sturgis Neighborhood Program SNP a group of local organizations including the Community Foundation are working together to address housing needs in Sturgis With support from the Community Foundation SNP formed a new partnership with the St Joseph County Intermediate School District s CTE Building Trades Program last year 36 SACF 2020 21 Annual Report
We know that home ownership provides families with a sense of pride and dignity including the opportunity to build wealth and equity and that s good for the entire community explains Tracey Parker SNP s Board President Since its formation in 1991 SNP has completed nearly 60 projects including home renovations and blight elimination all aimed at improving Sturgis neighborhoods and providing more options for quality affordable housing Their program model involves collaboration with multiple partners including the City of Sturgis and the Sturgis Area Community Foundation With the City s help SNP has been able to identify and purchase cityowned tax foreclosed properties for renovation projects that have enabled us to fully renovate and sell the homes at prices first time buyers can afford says Monica Smith Executive Director of Sturgis Neighborhood Program For its part the Sturgis Area Community Foundation finances both the purchase and renovation of SNP s properties investing foundation dollars that are later returned to the community s endowment after the home sells Throughout the entire process SNP coordinates working with local vendors and contractors to execute the renovations We know that home ownership provides families with a sense of pride and dignity including the opportunity to build wealth and equity and that s good for the entire community Tracey Parker Board President Sturgis Neighborhood Program Our local contractors and suppliers have stepped up and partnered with SNP to help us work on our mission of improving housing in our community says Smith We couldn t do our work without them SNP broke ground last fall kicking off a brand new home construction project on Sturgis South Maple Street The lot was purchased from the City of Sturgis for just 1 00 in support of SNP s new collaboration with Building Trades who constructed the home under the direction of instructor Wally Wheeler and alongside other local contractors and vendors The home sold this summer and SNP will complete its next new construction with the help of Building Trades beginning this fall SACF 2020 21 Annual Report 39
