Sabden Spotlight Contact us: readallaboutit@sabden.lancs.sch.uk SMALL SCHOOL BIG STORIES Autumn 1 2021 Outstanding Outdoor Opportunities! Exciting changes happened at Sabden Primary School over the summer – it now has a new spectacular outdoor area for nursery children! We went to investigate. The nursery children have a new outdoor classroom, along with a new area to play in. There is a marvellous mud kitchen, a super sandpit and lots of areas to paint and draw. We asked Mrs Scott, the creator, all about it! The new outdoor area used to have some old playing equipment on but it was time for a change! Mrs Scott created the outdoor area over the summer, and it took her a full week! She really enjoyed making the area. Her favourite parts are the toadstool and the fairy house – we saw the nursery children playing with the fairy house and having a fairy tea party. Mrs Scott reports that the eight nursery children love exploring all the different areas. There are lots of role play toys like the car wash, the vehicles and the washing line for hanging up the washing! The area has a fantastic reading den as well as plenty of areas to shelter in if it rains! The children really like being outside all the time. Sabden Primary School is so lucky to have such an amazing outdoor area. By Hannah Wilkinson Dinner shortages in Lancashire Schools As you may of heard there has been a shortage of school meals in Lancashire because there are less lorry drivers due Covid 19 and Brexit. This means our normal school meals have been changed so every single day the option is sandwich, jacket potato or soup. Lancashire County Council has promised to make the meals as healthy as possible. We have interviewed Georgie Smith from Year 5. Did you enjoy the school dinners before the shortage? I didn’t really like them I only liked the jacket potato and the sausage rolls. Do you enjoy the new school dinners? I enjoy the sandwiches but it is boring and non-nutritional. Do you enjoy the old or new school dinners more? I preferred the old school dinners more because they gave you more of a healthy option. If you knew this would happen again would you cross over to packed lunch? No I would not. By Sam
HOUSEPOINT SYSTEM We have yet another new addition for Sabden Primary. Our wonderful head teacher Mrs “Magical” Maskell has introduced a fun way to motivate our students. The new housepoint system uses four clear boxes with little slots in top. Every time a pupil does something which is ‘above and beyond’ they are awarded a housepoint. This is then put into the box and at the end of each half term the points are counted and the winning house get a special treat. There are four houses with magical names - Griffins, Phoenix, Dragons, Unicorns. Each house is led by an elected house captain. Everyone was invirted inclusing parents and dogs. Visitors had to donate £2.00 to come on the walk and that money went to the dogs and cats in dangerous countries and places where there are wars. Everyone enjoyed the walk including the dogs. Over 40 parents and family came on the walk and all of the dogs behaved themselves really well, apart from my dog Lucy who kept pulling on the lead! We raised £100 for War Paws so a great big thank you to everyone who came. We went to interview Mrs Maskell in her office. We wanted to know about her life outside of school and when she isn’t being a Headteacher. If you weren’t a teacher what would you be? Singer. I would sing very loudly just like Florence and the Machine. I would sing in stadiums and everyone would sing along. What’s your favourite holiday destination? I have been very lucky to have travelled to lots of places around the world. A couple of my favourites are France and Sweden. My least favourite holiday was in Marrakech in Morocco. I found it all a bit dusty and scary. Where were you born? I was born in Manchester. When I was 3 years old my family moved to Scotland and when I was 10 I came back to England. Did you have a packed lunch or school dinner? When I went to school the dinners were horrible so I had packed lunches. My mum used to make me ham sandwiches and sometimes egg sandwiches. I used to hate the egg sandwiches though as she just used to slice an egg and put it on the bread, she didn’t make egg mayonnaise for me! At Sabden Primary the school dinners are really nice so sometimes I have one of them now. Children are much luckier than I was. What entertains you? Something funny. I like to watch things on TV like Gone Fishing, When I was younger I used to really laugh at a TV programme called Vic Reeve’s Big Night Out – that used to make me howl. I used to like Strictly Come Dancing but I fast forward all the boring bits now so it’s not as good. What do you do at home? I’m very good at relaxing. I like to sleep and potter around the house. I do a lot of cooking and some baking and at weekends I like to go out for lunch. I like going to places nearby like the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales with Mr Maskell and Molly the dog. When I’m at home I am a mum and a wife, I’m not a Headteacher. Olive and Hannah’s Halloween Howlers What was your favourite subject at school? When I was at school I liked English and History. Now I like teaching those subjects but I also like Art and Design too. What were your favourite books when you were young? I loved the Laura Ingells Wilder Books “The Little House on the Prairie”, I also enjoyed the Mrs Pepperpot stories too. What is your favourite animal? Of course it’s a Black Cocker Spaniel called Molly. She is my most favourite animal ever. By Thomas and Erin What’s a vampires favourite food? Spookghetti ! What is in a ghost’s nose? Boo-gers. What does a panda ghost eat? Bam-BOO!
Halloween Traditions by Ava Halloween is very exciting! Trick or Treating is a great Halloween tradition where people dress up as spooky characters and knock on doors for sweet treats. Many people bake delicious Halloween recipes to share with their neighbours. The custom of trick-or-treating on Halloween may come from the belief that supernatural beings, or the souls of the dead, roamed the earth at this time and needed to be appeased. It may otherwise have originated in a Celtic festival, held on 31 October–1 November, to mark the beginning of winter. RecipE for Halloween cookies! Do you fancy a Halloween cookie? Well if you do read on for a spooky yummy treat! Ingredients • 250g/9oz unsalted butter, softened • 250g/9oz golden caster sugar • 2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 500g/1lb 2oz plain flour • red and black food colouring (optional) • 1 tsp baking powder • Halloween-themed cookie cutters • red, white and black writing icing • 200g/7oz ready-to-roll fondant icing • 1 tbsp apricot jam, warmed with 1tsp water Method 1. Beat together the butter and sugar in a large bowl, preferably using an electric mixer, until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract. (If the mixture looks a little curdled, add a spoonful of the flour.) If you’re using food colouring, add a few drops to the mixture. 2. Sift together the flour and baking powder in a separate bowl. Stir the flour into the butter mixture and work into a dough using floured hands. Turn onto a floured work surface and knead into a ball (the dough will be quite wet). Divide the dough into two portions, wrap in cling film and leave to chill in the fridge for at least one hour. 3. Roll the dough out to a 0.5cm/¼in thickness on lightly floured work surface. (It’s best to roll out one portion of the dough at a time, leaving the remainder in the fridge.) Cut shapes out with the Halloween cutters. Take a few limbs and heads off the gingerbread man for added gore. 4. Place the cookies onto the baking tray, leaving a gap between them in case they spread a little. 5. Bake for 12-15 minutes, leave on the tray for 10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling. 6. Once cool, let your imagination run wild. Use the red writing icing along the edges of the 7. missing limbs and heads as blood. For the skeletons and mummies, roll the fondant icing out to a 0.5cm/¼in thickness on a work surface dusted with icing sugar and cut out shapes using the same cutters as the cookies. Brush the cookies with the warmed apricot jam and stick the icing onto the cookies. Preheat the oven to 170C/325F/Gas 3. Line two baking trays with greaseproof paper.
