BEHAVIOR BY ADRIENNE BROCKWAY Q I recently adopted a dog who needs some basic training but is too anxious to do well in class Is there something I can do to make the learning experience more rewarding for both of us A Consider using Tellington TTouch as part of your training methodology and lifestyle Tellington TTouch is a practice that uses light meaningful touch and body awareness as it builds trust confidence and the bond between you and your dog or other animals And as this relationship is growing the ability to find moments of full relaxation is also developed The use of TTouch aids in improving physical mental and emotional balance even in stressful situations TTouch can be integrated in the daily routines of every life stage of your dog from the youngest puppy through the most mature of senior dogs Using TTouch provides techniques that address the challenges of teething tools to build confidence and social skills methods to improve the communication needed for better leash walking offers support for noise phobias and separation anxiety and gives the ability to touch and soothe achy and weakening muscles and joints Dogs who are adopted from a rescue situation often find themselves unsure of how to respond to their new life It is not uncommon to see 4 All things DOG in Northeast Ohio a dog frequently shut down when they encounter an unfamiliar situation or they perhaps fall into a flight response or even fool around or avoidance The things that trigger these responses can happen in a second but it may take hours days or even weeks for the dog to come out of it TTouch is an outstanding way to help the dog stay present during these challenging times With the human providing the mindful touch to open channels of communication throughout the dog s body we begin to see the dog break from the old habitual patterns of response and find the confidence to face these events instead TTouch is practiced throughout the world on all animals and humans and was originally developed for work with horses It can be learned in classes or workshops through private consultations by watching videos or reading books It can be done anytime and anywhere And there is no special equipment required to do TTouch To find out more information about Tellington TTouch visit TTouch com Adrienne Brockway is a Tellington TTouch practitioner who has worked extensively with dogs from all different backgrounds as well as with many other types of companion animals including cats rabbits birds ferrets and reptiles She is the owner of Animal Zen in Cleveland Heights providing pet care services consultations and basic skills and enrichment classes Animal Zen also carries a wide array of natural pet foods treats supplements household supplies active gear and toys

Dishing with Sam Mc Nulty on Bo and Beer By Karen Uthe Semancik hile most college students are hitting the books and the bars Sam McNulty was also launching his first restaurant on Cleveland State University s campus He opened the aptly named Caf 101 as a CSU urban planning major during his junior year The hardworking McNulty ran that business and several others for eight years before taking some time off to travel abroad and gain insight into what was next for the Cleveland Hts native While backpacking through India and enjoying an evening of beer drinking with a Polish guy who ran a Belgian style bar in Australia you can t make this stuff up he was convinced Cleveland was also ready for an establishment that served his favorite Belgian beers The idea for McNulty s Bier Markt was born I enjoyed the hospitality industry and decided to use restaurants and breweries as a tool to rebuild the Ohio City neighborhood And he has done just that And for most of the last four years with his trusty Labradoodle Bo by his side The 6 year old rescue pooch goes to work with McNulty every day and in fact was curled up under his desk during this interview After Bier Markt s success came Bar Cento Speakeasy Market Garden Brewery and Nano Brew Opening five restaurants and bars and a production brewery McNulty has single handedly been credited by many for the transformation of W 25th St But just like his wellmannered sidekick Bo McNulty is loyal to those who have been part of the success story McNulty s Bier Markt has been dog friendly since it opened back in 2005 People thought we were going to get in trouble or have problems with the dogs Instead it was so well received and really helped launch the bar Cleveland is definitely getting more and more dog friendly every year says McNulty He adds that all of his establishments patios and beer gardens are also dog friendly Another place McNulty and wife Ciara senior account executive at The Adcom Group a downtown marketing agency enjoy taking Bo to is the Cleveland Metroparks Bo especially loves the dog beach at Edgewater Park McNulty says Bo has some separation anxiety so he pretty much goes everywhere with mom and dad And they re very okay with that He loves kayaking with Ciara and me His happy place is anywhere in the Metroparks or snuggling with Ciara says McNulty So has Bo sampled any of dad s hoppy creations The apple fell pretty far from the tree in the beer department The little guy turns his nose up at beer More for me I guess It may not be from beer but when Bo does have a stomachache this dog dad s tip is pumpkin Anytime Bo has an upset stomach we open a can of 100 pumpkin and give him some Works every time I had a lot of help from my business partners and so many other great business owners and residents So what s next for the avid bicyclist active dog owner and ambassador of W 25th St And that success has caught the attention of businesspeople and dog owners alike His entrepreneurial spirit has graced the pages of publications like The Wall Street Journal while his establishments are favorites with active dog owners in the CLE because of the laidback dog friendly atmosphere Ciara and I bought some land in Duck Island a neighborhood in between Ohio City and Tremont a few years ago and are building seven condos with our good friend and talented architect Gary Ogrocki of Dimit Associates They are a 3 minute walk from Market Garden Brewery Cheers June 2017 CLEDOG net 11

We are lucky to live in a city that has so many options for dogfriendly dining and drinking Although I am a big advocate of hitting the town with your dog I also realize it s not meant for every dog Before you set out for a dog friendly patio it s important to consider a few things Training Make sure your dog is under control and will listen to you if you need to correct him We want to make sure that places stay dog friendly and encourage more to become dog friendly so it s important your dog represents his kind well Canine Good Citizen CGC courses can be helpful in teaching your dog the skills needed to behave nicely in public Be Prepared Some places will provide a water bowl for your dog but not all It s always a good idea to bring a water bowl for your dog if you re out on a hot summer day A toy or bone can also be a good idea to make the experience more fun for your dog Know your dog As much as you may want to take your dog out with you it may not be your dog s idea of fun Some dogs get nervous by noises or crowds or may act aggressively toward humans or other dogs if they get frightened If you re new to dog friendly dining it may be a good idea start at a small patio or coffee shop where you can leave quickly if needed Know your patio A lot of patios are technically dog friendly but that doesn t mean it s going to be good for every dog A few patios I ve been to only have a couple of tables in a tiny cramped space which is great if you have a small lowkey dog but not great for a larger more excitable dog It s a good idea to check out a patio first before bringing your dog And always ask if you can bring your dog on to a patio This is very important Some places may change their policies or it may depend on the crowd whether they will want your dog Better to avoid an awkward situation by asking first A SILVER ANNIVERSARY of Saving Goldens Golden Retrievers In Need GRIN RESCUE SAVE THE DATE GRIN s 25th Anniversary Gala For tips info and events sign up for our woof ENewsletter via our website at Saturday October 21st St Michael s Woodside Party Center Tickets on sale in early July Want to get involved Fosters are needed VISIT WWW GRINRESCUE ORG June 2017 CLEDOG net 15

Dating with Dogs Because if my dog doesn t like you neither do I By Megan Petrello ating today can sometimes feel like a cruel D joke orchestrated by Ashton Kutcher and his Punk d Crew If I had a nickel for every date I wish I would have avoided I d be a very rich dog lady Thankfully having your dog my Roo around to roll with makes it a lot more fun and interesting Most single dog owners will tell you finding someone who also has one certainly makes things easier You build that common ground right away Is mine the better dog Sure Will I eventually like your dog more than you Most likely But the point is they understand the schedules the clothes that become fur accessories the dreaded feeling of dog guilt the unconditional love and the shoe that may or may not be there in the morning Going to dog parks has always peaked my dating interest For me a dog walking into a park with his cute dad is the equivalent fantasy of a woman with hair blowing in slow motion while Dream Weaver plays in the background And since our dogs are usually better looking and have better personalities than we do they are a perfect way to make that first move I realize I m more at ease when Roo is around and I can let him be that cute well behaved pup and take all the credit Nowadays his arthritis and age have gotten the best of him so I visit dog friendly bars and restaurants where Roo can sprawl out and help me pick up people from the recline position Then we can reel in someone who likes sending funny dog memes all day because that s all dating is about nowadays anyway right Having a dog my whole adult dating life has also entitled me to my very own Get Out Of TheDate If Things Go Wrong Card My very own fairy godfather with a handy excuse to high tail it out of there Cover officially blown by accepting the assignment to write this article Roo has taught me a lot about love and patience over the 10 years I ve had him I ve realized that dogs don t just pick any pup to join their packs and I shouldn t either If someone doesn t like dogs it s easy to say they won t like me because it s an immediate deal breaker As Bill Murray put it I m suspicious of people who don t like dogs but I trust a dog when it doesn t like a person There is no greater feeling than being loved and accepted unconditionally and that s what my dog has always provided ideally someday a human will too Maybe just a little less hairy though Megan is a PR professional who lives in Tremont with her 10 year old boxer Roo When she s not going on bad dates she volunteers with animal rescue organizations attempts DIY projects and enjoys attending Cleveland sporting events June 2017 CLEDOG net 17
