THE MESSENGER GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER VOLUME 109 ISSUE 6 JUNE 2020 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK A LOVE NOTE FROM YOUR PASTOR Dear Beloved Community I send you my love my empathy and my gratitude love because in this moment of fear only love can overcome empathy because I know these past few months have been difficult and trying and finally gratitude because I am so deeply grateful to you for continuing to build the beloved community during this time Each of you is God s beloved and I treasure the friendship and partnership we share in Christ Several times a week I scroll through the names and faces in our church database holding you in love and light and longing for the time when we will be able to see each other again Know that you are not alone in this time Even if it is hard to feel it or sense it at this moment your church family is surrounding you just as God s love always has and will My empathy for you is deep and wide and of course God s even more so There is no grief or anxiety too small to matter Don t ignore what you are feeling just because you think your loss is smaller than someone else s They all matter It is okay and good to grieve whatever you have lost during this time It is also okay and good to admit that all this change and all this newness is coming fast and furious and sometimes it gets overwhelming It is okay and good to name that all of this monotony sameness loneliness isolation and these anxiety producing depression inducing news cycles are hard and making it difficult to cope You don t have to have it all together all the time Jesus says Come to me all you who are weary and heavy laden Don t forget that sometimes you just need to be still and let yourself be held in God s love I can t begin to express enough my gratitude to you Each of you in your own way is contributing to our work of building beloved community through this time I am grateful to those of you who have shown up for worship in this strange new way we are doing it or to a virtual small group book discussion or pop up event For some among us that is literally their lifeline during this time and you are part of providing it I am grateful for those of you calling to check on others in our community You never know how much that call might have meant to someone I am grateful to our pantry volunteers whose tireless work has kept us responding to God s call that we feed our community I am grateful to those of you who are showing up at online school board meetings or county commission meetings those of you who are keeping our hands on the plow which is sowing justice in our community I am grateful to those maintaining our building paying our bills and sending in donations and pledge money so that we can continue our ministry Finally I am very grateful to our staff and leadership for rising to the challenge of discerning our way through this I know many of our leaders have felt over their heads with all these decisions that need to be made especially knowing of how weighty they are that a bad decision could carry life and death consequences Our leaders have stepped up and risen to the challenge they are educating themselves in things they probably never thought they would epidemiology live streaming employment law and cleaning products just to name a few Let s keep being the church beloved The church is not the building It is all of us following hard after the Jesus way of life and that my friends is absolutely essential Pastor Jen ALSO FROM THE PASTOR S DESK WHEN AND HOW WILL THE CHURCH BUILDING REOPEN Some of us are still operating as if the state mandated safer at home policies are in place We are staying home and venturing out as little as possible It is a small sacrifice we can make as an act of love for our neighbors and to protect ourselves or a high risk loved one in our household Others of us are getting restless and starting to venture out in public more and more We are getting 1 haircuts eating out in restaurants going to the beach or planning trips Some of these activities are more risky than others but we are weighing the risks and doing some of them anyway Continued on page 2
Continued from page 1 So when will it be time to come back to church Many of us miss each other and our in person worship immensely Our Session has decided our building will remain closed through July This was a difficult decision We made it out of love and concern for your health and safety as well as that of our wider community Our guidelines for returning are two straight weeks of declining cases when the CDC increases recommended gathering sizes to at least 50 and when a number of other measures are met We have consulted guidelines from the CDC and both denominations and will continue to do so in making these decisions When we do return we will be wearing masks sitting 6 feet apart entering through one door and exiting through another All bathrooms will be single use only There will be a team of volunteers each Sunday wiping down surfaces and sanitizing throughout our time together We won t be engaging in congregational singing and probably not in fellowship hour at least not as we are accustomed Children s programing will likely remain canceled beyond our reopening as it is much harder to clean our children s spaces and harder for young kids to observe guidelines We continue to look for creative solutions for our young families and guests to be able to participate in the life and worship of the church When we do resume in person worship we will continue to have virtual ways to participate in the service for those who are self isolating We have committed to have that up and running by our first Sunday back in person Beyond worship we will continue to conduct all other meetings events and gatherings virtually We have asked that all of our rental groups also not use our building until we have resumed in person worship as we simply can t keep up with cleaning to the level needed to ensure a sanitized virus free space Our staff members who can work remotely will continue to do so until we resume inperson worship at which time we plan to reopen the church office Essential staff and volunteers like our custodian Mirko and treasurer Kate are there during offpeak hours or practicing careful protocol to reduce risk exposure and potential spread of covid 19 Our food pantry will continue to operate It is an essential service to the community and has seen a dramatic increase in clients We are very grateful to our pantry volunteers who have put themselves on the front lines to continue feeding others Due to a drop in normal expenditures such as utilities which has helped off set the slight drop in giving we have seen since closing down in person worship we are finding that we are getting by financially for now This is largely due to your continued faithful giving that has allowed us to keep paying our staff maintaining our building as well as serving and ministering to our community through this time Please continue to give out of what God has given to you If you do not need all of your stimulus check consider giving a portion of it to the church We ve already had one community member previously unaffiliated with our church do just that donating their entire 1200 check to our pantry We rejoice at people s generosity As we wait to be back together we invite you to continue to join us for our virtual worship small groups and pop up events We are improving these all the time so if you haven t attended lately or your first experience was poor give them another try Rebecca our office administrator continues to make herself available for tutoring folks in Zoom and or problem solving your specific issues logging on and participating More importantly get creative and figure out how you personally can follow the Jesus way of building beloved community in your current situation I continue to be reminded of the Apostle Paul s instructions to the church at Philippi Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus Phil 2 4 5 This seems paramount at a time such as this May we each be mindful of doing everything in love Well known Lutheran pastor author and podcaster Nadia Bolz Weber in a recent prayer reminds that every part of life can be sacramental Washing your hands taking a shower washing off your food when you bring it home from the grocery can all be mini remembrances of our baptism Sharing a meal over Skype or having fun preparing a meal with those in your household can be communion Attending a school board meeting virtually or writing a letter to your legislators can be an act of justice buying groceries for a neighbor an act of mercy reading the newspaper with tears in your eyes an act of prayer An evening stroll can quickly turn into a time of wonder and worship as you let yourself be dazzled in the beauty of God s creation I have even heard of one church member who is pulling out a hymnal and singing before bed each evening Remember always that God is in every moment We need only pay attention and look for the movements of the Spirit already around us everywhere Pastor Jen SUMMER OF BELOVED COMMUNITY ART PROJECTS ALL SUMMER LONG Paint a Peace Stone Paint or use sharpies to design a peace stone Then bring it to the church and place it in our peace garden Walk around and look at other s stones while you are there Decorate a Quilt Block Paint stitch dye color or somehow design a 6x6 block of fabric These will be sewn together to make a special Good Sam communion table cloth so that we always remember this pandemic time when we left the church building but continued to be the beloved community Don t have fabric You can use a square from an old shirt sheet or table cloth Be sure to leave a generous margin at the edge of your block for us to sew them together 2
YOU ARE TAKING CARE OF GOD S MINISTRY AT GOOD SAM None of us alive and working today can remember such a time of change in our country We are all facing new things and many are hurting financially and some have lost friends or loved ones Some are quietly experiencing losses we cannot even fathom In all of this we are still getting the pledges from those of you who have committed to Good Sam And I have been blown away by the generosity of our congregants who have donated so generously to the food pantry to in part sustain those who are food insecure at this time The scripture says in 2 Corinthians 9 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give not reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver We as a church are truly seeing that as you all find new ways to get your gifts and offerings to the church Some are having their offerings sent in by their banks as recurring donations some are going to the Good Sam website discovergoodsam org and giving through the website Some are writing checks and mailing them to the church No matter how you are doing it the act of obedience and generosity in following through on your pledges is amazing We continue to get offerings from some who have no connection to Good Sam but who are seeing the hard work the volunteers are doing to feed those in need through the food pantry Thank you all for your faithfulness Luke 6 38 says Give and it will be given to you A good measure pressed down shaken together and running over will be poured into your lap For with the measure you use it will be measured to you Some of you have heard me talk about my father shaking down the bushels of vegetables that we were taking to market to sell He said he always wanted to provide a full bushel and be fair to those who bought from us That lesson has followed me into adulthood and I see that same philosophy in so many of you Proverbs 11 25 says A generous person will prosper whoever refreshes others will be refreshed We can never out give our God and blessings will follow those who bless Bottom line is that Good Sam will survive this pandemic because of your faithfulness and will continue to be a blessing in our community Each person that is touched by any is touched by all I am so proud I m sure it is a holy pride of all of you who continue to support the church with your giving despite the hardships that you are enduring yourself Just another example of the extravagant love and welcome that is always found inside our doors and beyond Submitted by Carolyn Woodard THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTINUED TO SEND IN THEIR PLEDGES AND OFFERINGS TO GOOD SAM YOUR FAITHFULNESS AND DEDICATION ARE A GREAT BLESSING 3

FAST STILL GOING STRONG LOVE IS In spite of having to cancel our Nehemiah Action FAST has been accomplishing quite a bit this year For months now network members have been waiting to hear the final recommendations from the County s consultants about what behavioral health solution they are suggesting for our County Last month we got a copy of these recommendations It s a 98 page document but in the executive summary they recommend two foundational things one of them is as follows Establish a robust Coordinated Access Model that allows for increased transparency in how clients families caregivers and professionals can access the right services within the system This requires various enabling elements including a 1 800 number standardized screening triage and scheduling practices and an evaluation of the current systems in place by providers to ensure interoperability and exchange of information to allow for a consolidated view of consumer demand level of need available capacity and access to care The language is a bit confusing but we believe that s exactly what we have been asking for We still have a long way to go to make sure this plan is put into motion but this is undoubtedly a HUGE step forward God is undoubtedly working in us and through us to bring help to those with mental illnesses and addictions in our County Virtual meetings with local business CEOs are being held and several investments have been pledged If FAST is to continue to be a force for justice in Pinellas County we need every Member to invest what they can The pandemic will not stop our work but we must continue to support our organizers and the structure that enables our power of people to grow Now more than ever the voices of those who are being marginalized need to be heard by our officials FAST is committed to being that voice You may send a check to FAST P O Box 10421 St Petersburg FL 33733 You can also visit the website www fast pinellas org and invest online You may not have chosen to become a network member this past year but you can still be a part of the work by making an investment Please consider this prayerfully Submitted by Bev Kelly How do we stand FAST TOGETHER If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast but do not have love I gain nothing Love is patient love is kind It does not envy it does not boast it is not proud It does not dishonor others it is not selfseeking it is not easily angered it keeps no record of wrongs Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth It always protects always trusts always hopes always perseveres Love never fails But where there are prophecies they will cease where there are tongues they will be stilled where there is knowledge it will pass away For we know in part and we prophesy in part but when completeness comes what is in part disappears When I was a child I talked like a child I thought like a child I reasoned like a child When I became a man I put the ways of childhood behind me For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror then we shall see face to face Now I know in part then I shall know fully even as I am fully known And now these three remain faith hope and love But the greatest of these I Corinthians 13 3 13 is love See article page 8 10
2020 HURRICANE SEASON PREDICTED TO BE ACTIVE The 2020 hurricane season is upon us The season lasts between June 1 and November 30 In early May we witnessed Tropical Storm Arthur tropical storms can happen anytime during the year Early forecasts are calling for an active storm season A recent forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA agrees with the earlier forecasts Any landfalling storms could create unprecedented challenges for government officials working to respond to the coronavirus pandemic which scientists expect to continue albeit possibly at a slower rate throughout the summer The Pinellas County Emergency Management Department pinellascounty org emergency management is a comprehensive source for hurricane preparation information Each year they publish a hurricane preparedness guide Because of the pandemic the new guide will be on their website Since Good Samaritan is not presently having in person services you will need to familiarize yourself with the emergency management website People living in evacuation zones need to make plans on where they will go if a hurricane threatens our area A new wrinkle in this decision making process is the COVID 19 pandemic There is a very real possibility that shelters will have very limited capacity due to social distancing requirements Building an emergency preparedness kit may be more difficult this year due to lack of availability of cleaning and disinfecting supplies Other items may 11 also be in short supply Refer to the list of recommended supplies in the online guide We highly recommend that you have your kit ready early in the season You may wish to sign up for alerts by phone email or text www pinellascounty org alertpinellas Also you may receive emergency weather alerts on the NOAA Weather Alert Radio Social media is also a good source of information You can receive county news and updates from Pinellas County Government s Facebook and Twitter accounts www facebook com pinellasnews Twitter for Pinellas County Government PinellasEM Twitter updates on traffic pinellastraffic A private source of social media information can be found on Nextdoor www nextdoor com Television Pinellas County Connection Television PCCTV can be viewed on Spectrum 637 WOW 18 or Frontier 44 Submitted by Clarence Wilkinson
GOOD SAM HAS BEEN AWARDED THE SENIOR CITIZENS SERVICES SCS GRANT FROM THE THE DAY THE SINGING STOPPED I never thought the day would come when we would stop singing in church Christ followers have long been known for their singing Song is our prayer language As resurrection people I thought not even the grave could stop us Last month we reported that we had applied for a grant from the Pinellas Community Foundation It is with great excitement we share with you that Good Samaritan Church of Pinellas Park was indeed awarded the SCS Grant for helping the 55 visitors to our food pantry during the coming months Good Sam s receiving of the 55 Senior Citizen s Services SCS Grant from the Pinellas Community Foundation means TWO more assembly lines are in the nursery Starting June 1 residents of Pinellas County who are 55 or older will receive a supplementary bag of food per household It contains canned meats fruit vegetables pasta sauce and cheese to assist with a more protein enriched diet If you have an hour to spare and would like to help stock open break down boxes or pack let Lewis Hill Sarah Butz or Judy Friend know The room is not that large so only two can work in there at a time for established social distancing protocols We will pack 200 bags for people who cook and 50 for singles who do not cook Good Sam s nursery has served as the home base for Pack a Snack and should have been locked for the summer But because so many children and families are in need for food we are extending the Pack A Snack program throughout the summer giving each child ages 1 11 a snack bag when their family visits the Food Pantry At first we were going through the 88 bags in three weeks But the last batch lasted only two weeks because of increasing numbers So more snacks have been purchased and are waiting to be packed for distribution If you would prefer to stay home and pray for our program and those who are Submitted by Judy Friend helping pack or distribute we welcome that too GOOD SAMARITAN CHURCH CONTINUES TO PARTNER WITH THE HEART GALLERY It couldn t Only one force could and she has Her name is love It is love who quiets the songs of our mouths But the songs of our hearts They will never be silenced Our hearts will always sing love pulsing out the rhythm It is her song deep inside us all between us all that is making the outward song quiet now When we sing we push out breath with much more force than simply talking On the wind of that breath are carried thousands of germs including the Covid 19 virus When we sing those germs can infect people even 20 30 feet away from us We will not let our songs praising God be hijacked and weaponized to carry illness and death to God s beloved No we will quiet our song before it becomes a weapon It is how we love in this moment And we choose love ALWAYS By Pastor Jen 12

NEW CLERK OF SESSION Katie Fullerton and her spouse Gretchen Ackerson first came to Good Sam on a Sunday in December of 2001 They attended the Christmas Eve service and said that clinched it for them They were hooked on all that Good Sam means and stands for Through the years Gretchen has served in many capacities such as a session member our liaison with Head Start our liaison with Heart Gallery on the stewardship team on several working committees as well as some fundraising projects Katie has worked more in the background and has been a support in many ways to Gretchen s involvement Katie an accomplished artist has also been instrumental in some of the art projects that have enhanced our worship experience through the years She has helped with writing grants and has been a reader many times She also coordinated a huge yard sale fundraiser last year that brought in some much needed funds Most recently she hosted a zoom art class to help our members and friends feel more connected during this time of isolation A retired school teacher and avid reader Katie finds joy in her quiet times Both ladies have been a great asset to our outreach at Good Sam and now we are thrilled to say that Katie has agreed to take over the position of Clerk of Session Our dear friend Rich Feigel held that position for many years and no one can soon fill his shoes but we are so thankful for Katie s willingness to take on this huge task Usually Katie and Gretchen would be traveling for a good portion of the year but have decided to remain in the area this year due to the corona virus outbreak So they will be with us longer and will allow Katie to be on site for most of our meetings and since they are being conducted as zoom meetings even when she travels she will be accessible to us Her writing skills and attention to detail will serve us well as she takes on this role Thank you Katie And thank you to Beryl Fruth who served temporarily in this capacity until we could find a more long term solution BE SURE TO STAY CONNECTED MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR VIRTUAL MEETINGS WITH PHONE OR COMPUTER ARE AVAILABLE 15
