Bulletin April 2016 Terry Priest Retires A fter 42 years of outstanding nservice to the University of Manchester Terry Priest has decided to retire from his role as Director of the BSF with effect from 31st March Terry s achievements during this period are numerous and have been fittingly marked in recent months with a hat trick of external recognition He was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list has been presented with the Laboratory Animal Science Association medal its highest award and most recently was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology Terry s final day in work was the Thursday 31st of March but the Faculty of Life Sciences will be hosting a reception on Thursday 5th May 2016 to not only mark Terry s retirement but also to celebrate the unprecedented recent external recognition of his contribution and achievements The reception is scheduled for 5pm and will be held in the Living World and Fossil Galleries of the Manchester Museum I hope you will join us in celebrating with Terry and his family To assist with catering purposes please email your confirmation of attendance to Graham Morrissey manchester ac uk 5

Bulletin April 2016 9 Over 200 animal research institutions publish position statements online O ver 200 research institutions now have clear policy statements or public facing web pages to explain the institution s position on animal research according to Speaking of Research In 2015 Speaking of Research began logging the policy statements of research institutions in Europe North America and Australia These web statements have been graded from 0 to 4 based on the level of information an institution provides about its animal studies This information includes the level of detail of an institution s research its welfare procedures and the use of case studies images and videos To date only 10 research institutions have received full marks two in Germany and four in each of the UK and US The list has been a joint effort by the research community with scientists and members of the public submitting web statements they find to the Speaking of Research website Speaking of Research Director Tom Holder said There is a strong push worldwide towards openness in animal research Speaking of Research encourages the scientific community to ensure their own institution has a clear and public statement on the importance of animals in medical and veterinary research and to submit such statements to our website The UK has been driving hard to become a world leader in openness In May 2014 Understanding Animal Research launched the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research in the UK To date around 100 institutions who conduct or fund animal research have pledged to be clear about when how and why they use animals in research Wendy Jarrett CEO of Understanding Animal Research said It is a requirement of signing the Concordat that signatory organisations provide a public facing statement on their websites explaining their position on the use of animals in research We are delighted that almost half of the websites featured on the Speaking of Research list are UK based This

12 April 2016 Bulletin London Branch News T he Director of BRF Operations Francis Crick Institute Gary Childs has recently been elected as Chair of the London Branch When asked about the benefits of joining the London Branch Gary s response was I have been a committed supporter of the IAT for nearly 40 years and I am delighted with my new role With the opening of the Francis Crick Institute in Central London this is a great opportunity for our staff to become actively involved in our local branch and meet with fellow animal care staff and others working in the Universities and Institutes throughout London in a friendly open environment As a technician I was able to attend college on a weekly basis to increase my education and knowledge and over the years I have developed lasting friendships that still exist today Most of the younger technicians are now gaining their qualifications via distance learning or in house education programmes and do not have the opportunity to build the same kind of relationships I believe that local IAT branches around the UK bridge this gap Our Branch meets routinely in Central London and although well attended we would warmly welcome new and existing members to join us We encourage members to openly discuss and voice opinions on any issues for example improvements and innovations into animal care and welfare and we have a team of committed dedicated volunteers who are currently working on both scientific and social events to be held by the London Branch for the forthcoming year Details of these will be published in the IAT Bulletin For further information about joining the London Branch or attending meetings please contact Gary at gary childs crick ac uk or Jayne at j holby ucl ac uk

Bulletin April 2016 OBITUARY LINDA BURR 11th September 1955 24th February 2016 I am writing with great sadness to let members of the IAT and former colleagues of Linda Burr know that Linda passed away suddenly on Wednesday 24th February 2016 Linda had a heart attack at work and passed away in the ambulance on the way to Papworth Hospital Linda leaves behind her partner Barry her children Leigh Ann 38 Paul 36 Anna marie 34 Christopher 25 and Alex 23 and her grandchildren Jack 17 Conor 17 and Robert 15 Linda was a well respected animal technician and all round lovely lady She began her career as an animal technician in 1974 at May and Baker and had a long career working in many establishments including the University of Cambridge the MRC Prion Unit and finally the Laboratory of Molecular Biology where Linda had worked on a permanent contract from the 24th October 2011 Linda s priority was the care and welfare of the animals and she always went that extra mile to ensure that the animals under her care were well looked after This ethos always applied to the way Linda looked after her friends family and colleagues Linda was a mother to us all Her good humour and lively nature were infectious and she made the work environment a fun place to be Linda was due to retire on the 1st May 2016 and had made plans to return to her hometown of Romford and a new part time job as a children s party entertainer she would have been great Linda was a huge character who was firm fair kind and loving and all will sadly miss her Her death is a huge loss to the industry and all who knew her Lesley F Drynan Head of LMB Biological Services Group 13

14 April 2016 Bulletin AS ET Young Presenters Symposium For the second year running the West Middlesex Branch WMB invited AS ET to organise the Young Presenters Symposium at its Annual Trade Show We are pleased to be associated with this meeting which is one of the most valuable and enjoyable of the annual events We thank the WMB for allowing us to be part of the day Six younger speakers took part they were Matthew Bilton Selina Hopkins and Scott Kemp Clare Sims Rosemary Keeble and Melanie Crooks Their talks covered the benefits of becoming a MIAT and RAnTech creating a germ free unit rearing Zebrafish and three papers covering welfare topics All were of a very high standard and we congratulate all the speakers and thank them for their presentations The Young Presenters symposium also gives the opportunity for people to experience chairing a symposium session for the first time The three chairs Amy Wathen Helen Cooper and Clare Sims coped excellently with this role which is not as easy as it may look The day ended with a guest lecture from the Chair of the AS ET Board of Trustees Prof Sir Richard Gardner FRS who spoke on a topic he knows better than most as he was one of the pioneers in this area the History and Use of Chimaeras in Biomedical Research Sir Richard s talk brought the symposium to a very successful end Finally we would like to thank Fraser Darling who managed the lecture room making sure everything went smoothly Speakers at the 2016 Young Presenters Symposium From the left Guest speaker Prof Sir Richard Gardner Rosemary Keeble Melanie Crooks Scott Kemp Matthew Bilton Clare Sims and Selina Hopkins
