Welcome...TimingsSouthend Wheelers Cycling Club are proud to welcome you to our 2025 race day. This years double offering of The Andrews Trophy and The Florrie Newbery Classic promises to be a spectacular day of racing. As race organisor, I have had the opportunity (and pleasure) to organize both races, building on my experience from last year’s inaugural Florrie Newbery Classic. It’s only now that I realise the full amount of work that goes into it so thank you to Trevor Mills for last year’s heavy lifting and for the guidance throughout this years preparations. We are incredibly grateful for your participation in our road races. Your enthusiasm and support make events like this possible and truly special. Whether you are racing, volunteering, or cheering, your presence contributes to the success of this event.I look forward to a great day of racing!Thank you,MattThe Andrews Trophy Road Race The Florrie Newbery Classic07:30 HQ Opens 13:00 Race control opens07:45 Race control opens 13:30 Sign on closesReserves sign on commences08:30 Sign on closesReservces sign on commencesMarshals' and race convoy briefing13:45 Marshals' and race convoy briefingRace control closes08:45 Race control closes 13:50 Riders assemble in car park08:50 Riders assemble in car park 13:55 Riders' briefing08:55 Riders' briefing 14:00 Race start09:00 Race start 16:30 Approximate time of finish12:00 Approximate time of finish 17:00 Prize presentation at race HQ12:30 Prize presentation at race HQ 18:00 Event HQ closes

Race HQIt is a change from the previous few years from East to South Hanningfield. Specifically, therace headquarters for 2025 is South Hanningfield Village Hall.Inside the headquarters, we will have an area specifically for riders only. This area includes toilets and changing areas. Whilst your race is running, no one will be allowed to enter the area and is therefore an area where you can (at your own risk) leave bags and items during your race if you wish. There is a kitchen so there will be hot/cold drinks and a selection of cakes and goodiesavailable for purchase on the day.I am sure that those of you who have had a look online, you have seen that the village hall is not the most generous for parking spaces. To maintain the safety and best running of the event, the village hall car park is for the race convoy vehicles only. All riders and team vehicles will need to park in alternative locations. Middlemead Road will be the closest option for you to use. There are two car parks nearby but both have closing times that I am trying to extend but have yet to have confirmation so I cannot suggest these as solutions. If these are extended, I shall confirm to all as soon as I can. Please note that we also have access to the car park at The Folly Bistro (The Tye, East Hanningfield, Chelmsford, CM3 8AA) for those that wish to park in the village at any point in the day.HQ addressSouth Hanningfield Village HallSouth Hanningfield RoadSouth HanningfieldChelsmfordCM3 8HL

Race routeThe laps are the same as always but due to the change in headquarters, we have a new lead in. The easiest way to see the lead in is by watching our YouTube video of the course. Don't worry, music has been added and an unfit, out of breath race organisor panting his way around has been muted.Returning to the HQ after the race is a simple route but different to the way you joined the race. This is so that riders do not cross the finish line and trigger the sensors again by accident. After crossing the finish line, continue along the race route as normal but at the point where you turn left into the village, you are to take the right hand turn onto Main Road.Continue along, onto East Hanningfield Road down into Rettendon. You will then cross Main Road (yes there are two roads called Main Road within a mile of eachother) onto South Hanningfield Road which you will follow until you reach the HQPlease do not try to take Old Church Road as a shortcut. It looks like a nice shortcut but there are fences along there that prevent the public going all the way due to it being a partially private road.

Chip timingPhotos / videos2025 sees the introduction of chip timing to our two road races. We hope you agree, a brilliant upgrade for the races!Looking for photos of you racing?Need that perfect shot for your instagram story? We know the importance of the right picture and we will be sharing all images taken by the clubs photogprahpers. The link for the g-drive will be shared via email as quickly as possible following the days races. Please be sure to credit the photographer if using the images publically.Important:If you leave the race early, please do not come to the finish line with your chip, the sensors cannot be turned off until the race has finished. Being at the finish line will keep triggering the sensors and cause us massive problems.Do not leave without handing your chip back in. Your race licence will be returned upon giving back the chip. If you leave with your chip, you need to return it immediately. The kit is being used the very next weekend so we cannot have chips missing. As per the demonstration front fork at race HQ, the image shows that the chip is to be placed low on the fork. No more than 0.5 metres off the ground. This is to give the sensors the best chance of picking up your chip. You will be provided a chip, some cable ties and some inner tubing. If posting about the event then please tag us in@southendwheelers

Prime Lap prizeAs a new team on the block and one of the most local, we sent Charlie Crawt, Primo RT founder and owner so questions in the build up to this years race. This year’s races have a Prime Lap prize, with the winner getting £50 cash. The prize has been generously given by Charlie at Primo RT.At the start of lap 4, a signal (to be confirmed in the rider briefing) will be given to confirm the Prime Lap has started. The first rider across the finish line at the end of the Prime lap will be the winner of the prize. If you have any questions on this then please ask at the riders briefing before your race. What made you want to set a team up in the first place? I wanted to build something different - a team shaped by riders, for riders. Primo RT was born from a collective of passionate cyclists who wanted to create a focused, dedicated race team with a fresh approach. Our goal from day one has been to provide a supportive and sustainable platform that helps riders progress, with a particular focus on developing young talent.learned a lot, and really started to establish our identity both on and off the bike. The energy and commitment from everyone involved has been amazing. We wrapped up the 2024 season ranked 3rd in the Eastern Region and 53rd nationally, with 15 wins and 33 podiums - all achieved by a team of just 13 riders. We honestly couldn’t have asked for more. Now in your second year as a team, how are you finding it? It’s been a great ride so far. We’ve grown stronger as a unit,How do you balance team owner/leader and rider roles? It’s definitely a juggling act at times, but the passion for racing drives everything. Having a strong support system within the team makes it easier - everyone pitches in and shares the load, which is what Primo RT is all about. What are the ambitions for 2025 for both you and the team? For 2025, we want to keep building, develop our riders, step up our presence in national races, and continue getting the Primo RT name out there. I’m also looking to grow the team with a few new recruits whose focus is primarily on national level racing including National A's. Personally, being relatively new to the sport, I know I’ve still got a lot to learn, but I’m loving the process. My main ambition is to stay consistent and help guide the team from within the peloton.

Andrews TrophyThe Andrews Trophy is in memory of Tony Andrews.Presented to the Club by the Chelmer CC in 1982. The Andrews Trophy Road Race was a Romford RC promotion which started in 1963. Tony, together with his elder brother Brian and parents Jack and Ena we’re all Wheelers’ members. Tony left the club to join the Zeus RC and then was one of several riders that broke away to form the Romford RC, including Derek Worsley and Fred Little.Following Tony’s death from leukaemia the Andrews Trophy was organised byRomford RC, then the promotion was passed to the Chelmer CC and now withSouthend Wheelers.Image: James Ambrose-Parish, TAAP Kalas taking the victory in 2024.Photo taken by Christopher SmithEvent information:National B - E/1/2/3 catPromoted by Southend Wheelers Cycling Clubunder the technical regulations of British Cycling.Date: Sunday 27th April 2025Start: 9amDistance: 117.4 km (73.2 miles)Event organiser / Safety officer:Matthew Stock506a Sutton Road, Southend-On-Sea, Essex, SS2 5PNMobile: 07891494015Email: matthewpeterstock@gmail.com(to whom complaints should be sent, in writing, within 48 hours)Prize money:1st place - £1002nd place - £753rd place - £504th place - £405th place - £356th place - £307th place - £258th place - £209th place - £1510th place - £10Prime Lap winner - £50

AT StartsheetLooking at the Andrews Trophy road race. What are the chances for a Primo RT win? We’re always up for the challenge and attend all races with the mindset of getting a good result. We’ve got a strong squad coming into form, and if the race plays into our strengths, we’ll definitely be in the mix. But with national road races, anything can happen on the day.A final question for Charlie at Primo RT...

Thank youThese races could not happen without the Accredited Marshals, NEG riders, First Aiders and Volunteers. Thank you for your support of our event. You may have noticed that there are a fair few additional volunteers at this years races. British Cycling have managed to get some great people trained up as accredited marshals however to conclude their training, they need experience. As a club, Southend Wheelers are always looking to give back to the sport so we have taken on as many as we can to get them qualified as quickly as possible. If you are interested in a role within the sport, the please head to the volunteer pages on the British Cycling website.Chief Commissaire: Darren StewardAsst. Florrie NewberyFlorrie Newbery was the first woman to join Southend Wheelers on 3rd February 1937.Florrie went on to lead many club runs, generate interest for local woman riders to join and compete in the club time trials. She was also our first female committee member. When considering a new woman only road race, we wanted to honour that period in our history, when women riders first started to enter Southend Wheelers.New for 2025The biggest development this year is the Florrie Newbery joining the British Womens Team Cup calendar. It is a huge honour to be Round 1 of this years competition.Image: Molly Patch, Phoenix Collective taking the victory in 2024.Photo taken by Christopher SmithEvent information:National B (Female) - E/1/2/3 catPromoted by Southend Wheelers Cycling Clubunder the technical regulations of British Cycling.Date: Sunday 27th April 2025Start: 14:00pmDistance: 98.8 km (61.6 miles)Event organiser / Safety officer:Matthew Stock506a Sutton Road, Southend-On-Sea, Essex, SS2 5PNMobile: 07891494015Email: matthewpeterstock@gmail.com(to whom complaints should be sent, in writing, within 48 hours)Prize money:1st place - £1002nd place - £753rd place - £504th place - £405th place - £356th place - £307th place - £258th place - £209th place - £1510th place - £10Prime Lap winner - £50Combativity prizes from Albion, Veto Socks and Styrkr

Lisa West, BWTC OrganiserWe’re excited to kick off the 2025 British Women’s Team Competition with the Florie Newbery event and thank Matt Stock and the Southend Wheelers team for hosting the first round. With five more Team Cup events running monthly through to September, we look forward to some hard and fast racing and the potential emergence of future British Champions!Since its inception in 1999 by Jon Miles and Jenny Gretton, the Women's Team Series has grown into today’s well established British Women’s Team Cup. The ethos remains the same: to enable women to enjoy developing develop their skills and fitness in a team environment. Notable past participants include Zoe Backstedt, Anna Henderson, Elinor Barker, Lizzie Deignan and Dame Sarah Storey. The competition serves as an important bridge between regional and national A racing, helping riders adapt to faster paces and larger fields while learning team tactics. Plus the riders are motivated to race for a better position even if they are further down the peloton as the first four finishers in each team score Team Cup points. The points are totalled up for each event and team prizes for 1st, 2nd and third places are awarded. Over the season the total points are tallied to give an overall ranking and a Team Cup for the winners. For more information about the competition, the teams taking part and the team standings as we move through the season, please refer to https://www.britishteamcup.co.uk/A word from...@britishteamcupPhoto taken by Matt De-Beger

2024 ChampionsWe reached out to Billy Oliver ahead of this years race to see how the current BWTC Champions are doing. As reigning Champions coming into the new season, I assume the objective is to retain your title? Winning last year was a great achievement for the team , a collective build of momentum over the season and some stand out victories in the series that helped us capture the title , this year obviously we would love to win it again , its a brilliant series that we have huge respect for , but for us it will be again somewhere we can build confidence and provide opportunities to the riders, a platform we can take into the National A races and grow the team from.We are still only in April but how is 2025 going so far? 2025 has started very well for us , we had a great team camp in Calpe , picked up some early season wins and have been gelling well as a group , this The 2025 Adopt a rider support programme looks to be an incredible initiative for this year. Where did the idea come from and how is it going so far? We've always had an open approach to supporting riders no matter who they are , its a daunting place to turn up to a race and not know anyone or feel alone , there are a ton of barriers in women’s cycling so the aim was to break some of those down and hopefully get riders coming back to races not entering and having a negative experience.Time to talk about our race. Without giving away tactics, how are you going to win? We’ve got riders who can win this one , no doubt there , but these are often dictated on the day and the target is to be more reactive than go with a full plan as we’ve seen races that breaks go easy and others you can see its a sprint finish from the first 10 minutes , we wont be aiming to win the series on day 1 , its a long series of races so we will go in relaxed and excited to be racing together.FTP are proudly supported by...year is really a progression for us to keep putting opportunities in front of the riders but also supporting them in the sport they love, it will be an exciting year ahead, we’ve got alot to work on but we are building in the right way.
