Welcome to our 2022-2023 Rotary District 6970 Conference! "Imagine Rotary" District Governor Jeff Michelman welcomes you to historic St. Augustine. We have a great weekendplanned for everyone and we are thrilled to be back together to share in the fun, fellowship, and to beinspired, as we join together and "Imagine Rotary". We hope you are pleased to have our new programavailable on your phone at all times thanks to the ingenuity of Marie Turnbull. We believe that this innovationis consistent with Rotary’s newest area of focus the Environment in that no trees were killed to produce it.We are also excited to be led this year by Master of Ceremonies Eustachius Roberts who reinforces thatRotaractors and Rotarians are one in the samWe have a large district in 6970, full of active clubs representing Rotary, Rotaract, Interact, and Early Act.Clubs in our District do so much throughout the year. We hope to take a few moments this weekend to showour appreciation and respect for your hard work.This year we have assembled a spectacular lineup of speakers to educate and inspire you. We are honoredto have PDG Shirley Grace as Rotary International President Jennifer Jones' official representative, joiningus from District 5230 and the Rotary Club of Fresno, CA. We are excited to hear from Rotary Trustee DeanRohrs from the Rotary Club of Langley Central, British Columbia, Canada. We are also fortunate to be joinedby PDG Dr. Geetha Jayaram, District 7620, from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Also in attendancerounding out these very successful ladies is Kristen Keen, founder of Rethreaded in Jacksonville,Also, this weekend we will hear from Colonel Bob Springer - Astronaut. Colonel Springer was a missionspecialist on two spaceflights aboard Discovery and Atlantis. We will also hear from a local Rotarian, Dr.Jacob Atem, of the Rotary Club of Gainesville. Jacob will tell his tale about his Long Walk from Sudan asone of the Lost Boys of Sudan.Finally, the weekend would not be complete without hearing from TIME Magazine Kid of the Year, thewonder boy teaching us to Be Kind. Jennifer JonesPresident 2022-23Rotary Club of Windsor-RoselandOntario, CanadaJennifer Jones is the founder and president of Media StreetProductions, an award-winning 27-year-old media company in Windsor,Ontario. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland. Jennifer's talents have strengthened Rotary's reach and impact as shehas served in roles including vice president, director, Rotary Foundationtrustee, and co-chair of the End Polio Now: Make History Todayfundraising campaign.Jennifer is a leader in cultivating experiential fundraising opportunities, such as a day of golfing with Rotarypolio ambassador Jack Nicklaus in Jupiter, Florida, USA, that raised over $5.25 million for polioeradication. She also led the innovative #RotaryResponds virtual event in May 2020, which raised moneyfor COVID-19 relief projects and showcased how Rotary members were responding to the pandemicaround the world.Working alongside political figures, celebrities, and global leaders, Jennifer has raised awareness andhundreds of millions of dollars to eradicate disease, support peace, and provide clean water and sanitation.An expert storyteller, she inspires hope and promise and motivates people to take action.She has received the Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation Citation for MeritoriousService. She holds a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) and has been recognized with the YMCA Peace Medal andthe Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, and she was the first Canadian to receive Wayne State University'sCommunity Peacemaker Award.Jennifer is married to Rotary member District Governor Nominee Designant Nick Krayacich, a familyphysician. Dr. Jeff MichelmanDistrict Governor 2022-2023Rotary Club of Jacksonville OceansideJeff grew up in the Northeast US, but over time has had a chance to liveand work abroad. His life changed dramatically when he met his wifeMaureen (a charter member of the Satellite Club of JacksonvilleOceanside) while a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. When asked he proudly claims to be a Wisconsin Badger.Maureen and Jeff have relished living in Atlantic Beach for almost halftheir lifetime while Jeff has had his impact on the local community as hehas proudly been a member of Jacksonville Oceanside Rotary for 27years and served as club president.Much of Jeff’s passion for Rotary comes from helping to train future leaders. Jeff was an Assistant Governorfor Area 7 and is currently a member of the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) faculty. He has been active inall levels of Rotary throughout the state of Florida with a particular emphasis on youth and globalizationhaving been the founding liaison for the UNF & Towncenter Rotaract clubs. He chaired the RotaractCommittee for Florida PETS, chaired the District 6970 Global Scholars selection committee and was thechair of the district End Polio Now Committee. Jeff twice participated in the Bike Ride to End Polio and heand Maureen completed a National Immunization Day (NID) in India. Jeff and Maureen are Major Donors,Benefactors, Bequest Society and Paul Harris Society members.Jeff is an alumnus of Leadership Jacksonville where he served on the Board of Directors, Chair of theYouth Leadership Jacksonville Council and the executive committee. John TaborDistrict Governor Elect 2023-2024Rotary Club of Orange Park SunriseJohn Tabor, a member of the Rotary Club of Orange Park Sunrise since July2000, served as club president during the 2017-2018 Rotary year. John isthe Founding Chair of the club’s major fundraising event, TheTennis4Cancer Doubles Championships and has twice been namedRotarian of the Year.He has served the District as Assistant Governor for Area 3, and as DistrictTreasurer. As District Governor Nominee, he chaired the Brent Williams andAl Watson Awards Committee and served as the District “On to Houston”International Convention Chair.John is a graduate of the Rotary Leadership Institute and now serves as an RLI Facilitator. He is a PaulHarris Fellow, Paul Harris Society member and a Major Donor.John has a long record of service to the Clay County community. He was recently re-elected to a fourthterm on the Board of Supervisors for the Crossings at Fleming Island Community Development District(Eagle Harbor). He currently serves as the Board Chair.John is a former Chair of the Clay County Chamber of Commerce and served as Interim CEO in 2011-2012. Mickey UlmerDistrict Governor Nominee 2024-25Rotary Club of Flagler BeachMickey Ulmer began his career in retail. For 25 years, he developed hisskills in advertising, promotions and strategic planning for a variety ofconsumer-based companies. While helping lead an advertising agency, heexpanded his focus to hospitality and customer service which led him to 25more years with the Sonny’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q chain — first as Director ofMarketing producing promotions and “from-the-heart” customer service —and then as a franchisee putting all those ideas to work satisfying customersevery day.Mickey excelled at assessing consumer needs and then creating high-impact messages to excite them ascustomers. His work brought numerous Addy Awards for creativity, then the Silver Medal For LifetimeAchievement from the American Advertising Federation, and later he was twice recognized Business OfThe Year by the Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce. Throughout the years, he served on a number ofcivic boards including the Patient Advisory Council for Baptist/Nassau Medical Center and AdvertisingAdvisory Council for The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communication where he wasmade Professor Honorarius for his years of service to the college and its students.As a restaurateur, Mickey fine-tuned his community service skills supporting Toys For Tots, the Boy Scouts,the Girl Scouts, the Navy League and more; he helped organize a Cold Night Shelter and continuallydonated food to the relief effort; and he opened his restaurant each Thanksgiving Day to provide over 200people in need of a hearty meal and a bit of encouragement.As a member and president of the Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise, he found new avenues for hispassion for service and became a Paul Society member. Moving on to District responsibilities, Mickey hasserved as Area 4 Assistant Governor, Fund & Procedures Committee member and is currently the RLIDirector for District 6970.Native Floridians, Mickey and his wife, Gale, moved to Palm Coast at the end of 2020 where he is currentlya member of the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach. Dale MoeDistrict Governor Nominee Designee 2025-26Rotary Club of Northwest JacksonvilleDale M. Moe is a retired Navy Chief that served our nation for 21 yearswith pride and honor. Dale’s final tour of duty brought him to Jacksonvilleand upon his retirement he now calls the First Coast home. Dale wasborn on the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago and grew up inHouston, Tx. Dale was a government contractor working for Honeywell atBlount Island for seven years and is currently a commercial realtor withGreene Commercial Real Estate.Dale serves his community in many ways. He is the Immediate Past President of the NorthwestJacksonville Rotary Club (2021-2022); the District 6970 Assistant Governor for Area 4; District 6970District Governor Nominee Designate 2022-2023, a member of the board of directors for the NationalPOW/MIA Memorial and Museum at Cecil Field. Dale is also continually active in the Jacksonvillebusiness community. Considering his service to his country, the Jacksonville community and businessdevelopment, Dale still feels that his greatest accomplishment is being a strong believer in his faith, ahusband, and a father to five fabulous children.Page 8

Shirley has served her District as Foundation Chair and a member ofthe Council on Legislation and served as Zone 25-26 Institute Chair in2017-2018. She’s a cyclist and has raised over $400,000 for End Polio Now over thelast 7 years. A recipient of the Regional Service Award for a Polio-FreeWorld and The Rotary Foundation Meritorious Service Award, Shirleyand her husband Dick are Major Donors and Bequest Society Members.Shirley travels throughout the US to inspire Rotarians as a keynotespeaker and continues to find fulfillment and peace through Rotary andCommunity Service.Page 19
KRISTIN KEENFri. Dinner SpeakerRethreading and Reimaginingthe Impossible Kristin lived for five years in Kolkata, India where she co-founded, SariBari, a thriving business that gives survivors of human trafficking a wayout of exploitation through employment. Sari Bari now employs morethan 100 women. Upon her return to Jacksonville, Kristin startedforming relationships with women on the street. She found that theproblem of human trafficking was flourishing in her own city and in 2012she founded Rethreaded. Rethreaded is a safe, supportive work environment where women canstart a new career while experiencing continued healing throughcommunity. When not at Rethreaded, Kristin is biking or swimming inthe ocean at sunrise. Page 20

Plenary IUnderstanding Our MentalHealth CrisisDr. Geetha Jayaram is Past District Governor for District 7620 for 21-22.Dr. Geetha Jayaram is the District Rotary Foundation Chair for District7620. A past Rotaractor and recipient of the 2012 Rotary InternationalService Above Self Award and a 2005-06 Rotary Grant for UniversityTeachers. In 2015 she received The Rotary Foundation Global AlumnusService-to-Humanity Award. She is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins Schools ofMedicine, Public Health and Nursing where she received the MarylandPsychiatric Society Lifetime Achievement award, and was recognized bymedical students (only 5 of 12,000 faculty get this per year after severalcommittee reviews) for Election into the Distinguished Teachers Societyof Johns Hopkins. In 1997, from the Rotary Clubs of Columbia, & Howard West, Dr.Jayaram founded the Maanasi Clinic in Mugalur, Karnataka, India. Shehas volunteered for National Immunization Days for eradicating polio inIndia several times. She is a widely recognized speaker.Page 21

Plenary 2Overcoming AdversityRobert (Bob) Springer (Colonel, USMC, RET.) “Bob" Springer is aNaval Academy graduate and earned a Master of Science inoperations research and systems analysis from the U. S. NavalPostgraduate School. He is a veteran of Vietnam, where he completed 300 combatmissions flying F-4 phantoms and 250 missions flying helicopters. In 1981 he became an Astronaut and has logged more than 237hours in space. He has been a Mission Specialist on twospaceflights: STS-29 aboard Discovery and STS-38 aboard Atlantis. Page 22

Plenary 3The Long Walk From SudanJacob Atem, Ph.D. MPH is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.He is also a public health practitioner and an advocate for refugees.Jacob is a member of the Rotary Club of Gainesville. One morning in 1991, Jacob was caring for the animals when he heardgunfire and screaming. When he ran to see what happened, he saw hisvillage on fire. The rebel forces from Northern Sudan had invaded, andhe knew that his family members had either been killed or taken intoslavery. He was 6 years old and along with other young boys whosevillages were destroyed, he started walking. Learn what happened next in his plenary talk on Saturday.Page 23

Plenary 5The Rotary FoundationHendreen Dean Rohrs, Trustee 2020-23 of The Rotary Foundation.Dean is a member of the Rotary Club of Langley Central, BritishColumbia, Canada. She has been a Rotarian since 1989 and hasserved RI as vice president, director, Rotary coordinator, regionalRotary Foundation coordinator, and district governor. Dean is an owner and administrator at Rhide Technologies Inc.,which supplies soil stabilization products used in road construction.Earlier in her career, she had been a nurse in Cape Town, SouthAfrica, on Christiaan Barnard’s heart transplant team. From 1959-90,she was active in Red Cross in South Africa. She served on theboard of the West End Seniors’ Network in British Columbia and iscurrently on the board of a girls school in Malawi. She is a Rotary Foundation Benefactor, Major Donor, and BequestSociety member. She and her husband, Reinhold, are Paul HarrisFellows. Page 24
ORION JEANSat. Closing Plenary 6 The Life Changing Power of KindnessOrion Jean is a 12-year-old 7th grader from Texas. After winning anational kindness speech contest, he used his prize money to startthe “Race to Kindness” campaign. His initiatives include the “Race to 500 Toys,” Race to 100,000Meals,” and “Race to 500,000 Books.” His pursuit of kindness isfueled by this simple mantra- “If you see a problem, fix it.” He is the author of A Kids Book About Leadership, a book focusedon inspiring the young (and young-at-heart) to develop the leaderinside of them. Orion was also selected as the 2021 TIME “Kid ofthe Year.” He has been featured on Ellen, Good Morning America, The KellyClarkson Show, CBS Evening News, ABC World News, andnumerous local, national and international media outlets.
