WHAT IS MENTORING Mentoring is a development based method involving guidance counselling and coaching processes Mentoring has the following characteristics Tolan et al s 2008 Interaction between two individuals over an extended period of time Inequality of experience knowledge or power between the mentor and mentee with the mentor possessing the greater share The mentee is in a position to benefit from the knowledge skill or experience of the mentor Tolan et al s 2008 This product has been produced with the financial support of the European Commission by the Erasmus Programme and reflects the views only of the author therefore the European Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained here Mentoring is considered a successful method to promote social inclusion of vulnerable groups having positive outcomes Namely attitudinal cognitive or motivational change including positive changes in coping and other psychological skills improvements in attitudes and thinking patterns better mental health academic social behavioural and emotional positive outcomes interpersonal relationships and academic achievement DuBois et al 2011

MENTORING VS COACHING LONG TERM RELATIONSHIP Purpose support the individual and professional transformation Can include giving advice counselling coaching A mentor provides guidance to the mentee Less structured Mentoring is mainly development driven The mentee decides what they wish to achieve and their goals SHORT TERM RELATIONSHIP Purpose increase productivity transform attitudes and gain competencies Focuses on individuals or groups who set and achieve their own goals A coach helps the client to find his her own way Typically follows a more rigorous structure Coaching is performance driven It encourages the individual or individuals to perform in their day to day roles This product has been produced with the financial support of the European Commission by the Erasmus Programme and reflects the views only of the author therefore the European Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained here GO BACK
