The Illuminated Night Parade is the glittering highlight of Rhode Island’s Pride celebrations. This unique parade, the only one of its kind in New England, features a dazzling array of lighted oats, performers, and community groups, all marching through the streets of downtown Providence. The parade route goes down Washington Street, across Dorrance Street in front of City Hall and up Weybosset Street with the reviewing stand at the historic Providence Performing Arts Center. To ensure everyone can enjoy the parade, an accessible viewing area is available at the reviewing stand. This area is designed to accommodate wheelchairs and oers an unobstructed view, ensuring that those with mobility challenges can experience the parade comfortably. The parade is lined with thousands of spectators, who gather to witness the spectacle of lights, music, and dance, creating a festive atmosphere that lights up the night. As the parade concludes, the celebration continues with various after-parties and events throughout the city, allowing attendees to extend their Pride experience well into the night. The Womxn Project and its Education Foundation is a Providence-based nonprot at the intersection of reproductive justice, LGBTQIA+ advocacy, and creative civic engagement. Through artivism—including impactful public installations, quilt projects, billboard campaigns, and yard signs—they bring issues like bodily autonomy, gender-airming care, and hate prevention into the public spotlight. They’ve championed major Rhode Island policies such as the Reproductive Privacy Act and eorts to expand abortion coverage, while training community advocates through their “Empowered to Advocate” series. Their focus on intersectional feminism ensures that underrepresented voices—especially BIPOC womxn, trans, and nonbinary individuals—remain central to Rhode Island’s reproductive and LGBTQIA+ movements.Recently honored with a $200,000 grant to secure a permanent home, their unique blend of advocacy, art, and education makes them a powerful voice for equity, inclusion, and grassroots empowerment. We are Unapologetically Proud to shine the spotlight on this extraordinary organization.Rhode Island Pride proudly names ANDRY JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ ROMERO as an Honorary Grand Marshal, in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ immigrants facing injustice and inhumanity within the U.S. immigration system.A gay man from Venezuela, Andry sought asylum in the United States to escape violence and anti-LGBTQIA+ persecution. Instead of nding refuge, he was detained in San Diego and wrongfully deported—alongside 238 Venezuelans—to El Salvador. U.S. authorities falsely accused him of gang ailiation based solely on a tattoo of three crowns on his arm, a claim made without due process or credible evidence. Recently, a judge dismissed his case in an attempt to erase the facts about him and his case.Though Andry was never a Rhode Island resident, we join Pride celebrations across the country in amplifying his story as a call to action. His case has even reached the halls of Congress, where Rhode Island Congressman Seth Magaziner recently condemned this injustice. Naming Andry as an Honorary Grand Marshal is not only a gesture of recognition—it is a declaration that Pride must also be a protest. We are Unapologetically Proud to stand with Andry and all LGBTQIA+ immigrants whose dignity and humanity deserve protection, not persecution.One of the hardest things we do as a community and as a family is say goodbye. This year, a few key friends and supporters of Rhode Island Pride passed away, and we honor their memories as Honorary Grand Marshals.

PRIDE GUIDE 202517Rhode Island Pride honors the memory of MYRA SHAYS, as an Honorary Grand Marshal—a true ally, advocate, and changemaker whose legacy continues to uplift our community. Myra was never content to sit on the sidelines. In 1998, she founded the Providence chapter of PFLAG, creating a space of airmation, education, and love for families of LGBTQ+ individuals across the region. For over 15 years, she led with compassion, conviction, and courage—mentoring others, editing content for OPTIONS, riding in Pride parades, and always showing up for what mattered.Whether through her work with PFLAG, her leadership in Jewish community organizations, or her thoughtful presence in spaces of learning and care, Myra lived her values out loud. Her example reminds us that being Unapologetically Proud is not only about identity—but about an unwavering commitment to justice, family, and community. We remember Myra with gratitude, and we celebrate her legacy that continues to make a dierence. May her memory be a blessing.One of the staples of our Pride is the presence of our 76’ers—the original marchers of the rst Pride in Rhode Island in 1976. Alongside them at the festival and parade for many years was a man full of joy and pride, though he was not one of them. His role was the husband of one of the 76’ers, Billy Mencer Ackerly, and the love of his life: GAIL LEE ALEXANDER “ALEX.” In January, Alex passed away, and this Pride will be missing one of its brightest lights. We thank you, Alex, for being there as a helper and friend to all of us, and for being full of joy and pride, always. You will be deeply missed.Rhode Island Pride is proud to recognize and remember DOROTHY “DORI” SHIELDS as an Honorary Grand Marshal, paying tribute to a behind-the-scenes trailblazer whose impact on Pride events nationwide—including our own—cannot be overstated. Dori passed away on May 31, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, joy, and unwavering commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community.As co-founder of Casswood Insurance, Dori played a critical role in making LGBTQIA+ celebrations possible, oering trusted coverage and guidance that ensured events like ours could thrive safely and sustainably. For years, Rhode Island Pride counted on Dori not only as a partner, but as a friend—someone whose steady support and infectious spirit left a mark on every project she touched.A sharp mind with a kind heart, Dori was a consummate professional, a erce advocate, and a joyful presence who believed in community and showed up for it every time. In honoring her, we remember the many hands—often unseen—that make Pride possible, and we celebrate Dori’s enduring legacy with gratitude, admiration, and love.

PRIDE GUIDE 202538Getting to PrideFestPrideFest takes place at the Providence Innovation District Park (GPS location:120 Peck Street, Providence, RI 02903) in the heart of Downtown Providence along the Providence River waterfront. There are two main entrances - Dyer Street near District Hall and at the pedestrian bridge. The fun starts at noon and continues until 7:00 pm, leaving you with just enough time to get ready for the Rhode Island Pride Illuminated Night Parade, which kicks off at 7:45 pm just a few blocks away.ParkingThere are several surface lots and garages around the city. We recommend parking for the full day and walking over to PrideFest. Parking meters are in effect on Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. Street parking is signicantly restricted on June 15 within the immediate vicinity of PrideFest and the Illuminated Night Parade. The Dyer Street parking lots are adjacent to the Festival and within walking distance from the Parade. Providence Place Mall and RI Convention Center parking lots are also just a ten-minute walk to the park.Local Transportation Public Transportation to Providence within RI: The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) offers bus service to the city of Providence from various locations throughout the state of RI. For scheduling information visit RIPTA’s web site at www.ripta.com or call them by phone at (401) 781-9400. There are several taxicab companies that service the greater Providence area and Uber and Lyft are a great option (Use this address to schedule a ride service:120 Peck Street, Providence, RI 02903). Bicycles, Skateboards, Skates & ScootersFor the safety of our guests, bikes, skateboards, roller skates, rollerblades, scooters and motorized vehicles of any kind, with the exception of wheelchairs and mobility scooters, are prohibited from the festival grounds.Festival AdmissionPrideFest is open to all ages, and admission to PrideFest is $1. Your $1 donation helps offset the production costs of this massive celebration. For your convenience, ATMs are located near the main entrance on Dyer Street.Trash and RecyclingBins are located throughout the PrideFest site. Please pitch in and be responsible with your trash and recyclables to help keep our city as clean as possible.PrideFest is Pet FriendlyPets are allowed on the festival grounds during the event. For everyone’s safety, please keep your pet leashed and be courteous to pick up after your animal should they answer the call of nature.Alcoholic BeveragesPrideFest is a place to party, and some people like to do that with a drink. The Beer, Wine and Spirits Garden is located adjacent to the Main Stage. Proper ID (21+) will be required enter the Beer, Wine and Spirits Garden and to purchase alcohol. All beer, wine and spirits must be consumed within the fenced area. Please party responsibly.Non-Smoking/Vaping AreasThe Beer, Wine and Spirits Garden and the Kids’ Pride Zone are non-smoking/vaping areas. Please be courteous when smoking/vaping at PrideFest and refrain from smoking/vaping in crowded areas. Do not litter and make sure that all smoking materials are completely extinguished. Safety TipsPrideFest volunteers and RI Pride Security can be identied by their t-shirts and identication badges. PRIDE GUIDE 202539Take care of all personal belongings and be aware of those around you. Keep wallets, purses, bags, mobile phones, and cameras secure and within sight at all times.Many organizations, including RI Pride, will be asking for donations at PrideFest. Individuals soliciting donations for organizations should be identiable by badge identication or aliation information.Even though the PrideFest is a safe and friendly venue, we still recommend the buddy system. Spend the day with a friend, travel to and from the festival in a group and make sure that you stay aware of your personal safety. Remember you should carry identication with you at all times. We want your Pride experience to be as safe and enjoyable as possible. Please report any concerns to RI Pride Security or a PrideFest volunteer.During Rhode Island PrideFest, a shelter-in-place order may be issued by local authorities in response to emergencies such as severe weather, hazardous material incidents, or security threats. This directive is intended to protect public safety by minimizing exposure to potential dangers. If such an order is announced, attendees should immediately seek refuge in the nearest secure indoor location. Designated safe locations include the Aloft Hotel lobby, CIC Providence, and the South Street Landing Garage. Once inside, remain calm, stay away from windows and doors, and await further instructions from emergency personnel. It’s crucial to stay informed through ocial channels (those wearing red staff shirts or ocial uniforms) and only leave your shelter when authorities indicate it is safe to do so.Lost & FoundAlthough RI Pride does not operate an ocial lost-and-found service (and is not responsible for any lost articles), people sometimes turn in lost items to the Pride Information / Security Tent. Lost children should be taken to the nearest police ocer, RI Pride Security, or to the Pride Information / Security Tent.Viewing the RI Pride Illuminated ParadeThe RI Pride Illuminated Parade winds its way through the streets of Providence from the the intersection of Washington and Empire Streets through downtown and past the Providence City Hall and ends at the Providence Performing Arts Center. We work extremely hard to keep the thousands of people who crowd the streets of Providence safe and happy. By following these simple suggestions you can help us help you maximize the viewing experience:• You must remain on the sidewalk as the parade passes. Do not jump the barricades. People standing on the street are not only a safety hazard but also block the parade from passing and slow the procession.• Intersections along the parade route can become very congested please do not crowd the corners or stand outside of the barricades.• Many of the city streets remain open to trac during the parade. Parts ofKennedy Plaza, and downtown cross streets remain very busy as the parade passes. Please observe all police direction and obey trac signals and crosswalks. • Keep your children safe and out of danger. Use extra caution with strollers on the parade route and hold young children’s hands. Children should not be allowed to enter the parade route for any reason without adult control.• Many crosswalks will be closed during the parade. If you need to crowd the streets look for the designated breaks in the barricades.• Do not approach oats or vehicles in the parade. Vehicles are likely to move without notice. If you are not ocially registered in the parade, please do not enter the parade route.  A Final CommentWe hope you have a great day with RI Pride at the PrideFest and Illuminated Night Parade. However, even in the fun atmosphere of a festival, the City of Providence is responsible for enforcing all applicable state laws and local ordinances during the Pride event which include, but are not limited to: public decency, alcohol, controlled substances, public safety, and parking.RI Pride, as the event organizer, reserves the right to decline admittance to anyone who violates the reasonable policies established for public safety, tries to gain entrance to restricted areas or causes serious disruption to the good order of the event.Have a happy, fun and safe Pride!
