It’s true! Since 2019, a Christian Nationalist group called LifeWise Academy has been pulling kids out of public schools for indoctrination. They are now a presence in Washington State. What is LifeWise? LifeWise Academy bills itself as a nondenominational, Bible-education program. They have documented ties to the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025, Moms for Liberty, and the hate group Family Research Council. Their curriculum was created by an arm of the Southern Baptist Convention. They are anti-LGBTQIA+, believe that the only “righteous” family has a mother and father married to each other, and they even encourage children not to follow their parents’ instructions if their parents are deemed sinners against God.How is this legal? The Supreme Court case Zorach v. Clauson laid out certain stipulations: the program must be opt-in by the parents or guardians, take place o school grounds, cannot use public education funds, must not take place during core classes, and schools may not promote or endorse the program. Initially used to address students leaving school a bit early for religious education, groups like LifeWise have exploited the rules and demanded that public schools allow students to be indoctrinated during school hours. How is LifeWise adversely impacting students in school? In other states with LifeWise programs the following examples have been veried: • In some schools, indoctrination supersedes Art, Music, and PE classes. • In some schools, elementary students left behind have been forced to attend “study hall” or work on math problems instead of being taught by their teachers. • There are reported cases where non-participating students have had their lunch period cut short in order to accommodate LifeWise students. • Non-participating students have been bullied and ostracized. • Proselytizing skyrockets in public schools where LifeWise is an option.
