Cory “Nova” VillegasArtistic Directorshe/herCory “Nova” Villegas was born and raised in the HuntsPoint area of the Bronx. She began dancing at the earlyage of five training in Salsa On 2 at Starlite Dance Studio,under the direction of David Melendez. At the age of eight,she continued her training at Dancers DreamZzz School ofDance under the direction of Debbie Melendez, with theinstruction from “The Lady of Soul,” Kimberly Rivera. Corycontinued her study of dance at Lehman High School in theBronx. She trained under former Forces of NatureCompany member, Penelope Kalloo. She studied ballet,Afro-Caribbean, Bollywood, Contemporary, and variousstyles of Modern dance as a member of the Lehman HighSchool Dance Company. It was for the Lehman HighSchool Dance Company that Cory created her first Salsawork “Acuyuye.” After graduating high school, she began teaching at Dancers DreamZzz and LehmanHigh School as a teaching artist. Continuing down the path of dance Cory studied atLehman College under Michael Manswell where she studied Dunham Technique.Curious about the possibility of pursuing a career in Dance Education she transferredto Hunter College where she obtained her Bachelor’s and Master's Degree in DanceEducation from the Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program. Since attending theprogram she’s had the opportunity to be mentored by international choreographerPedro Ruiz Jr. and Maura Donohue. Cory choreographed “Creciente” (2017),“Creciente: El Espiritu De La Selva,” (2018), “La Liberacion” (2018), “Calle Soul“(2018) & “F.R.E.E.D,” a works in progress in 2020. Her works have been presentedat the Bronx Borough Arts Dance Festival, The Hispanic Federation’s LGBTQ FuerzaFestival, 2019-2023 EstroGenius Festival, Ailey CitiGroup Theater for KoDaFe in NYC,The 2019-2023 Making Moves Dance Festival, The 2023 La MaMa Moves DanceFestival, 2020-2023 Jazz Choreography Enterprises Show and Clarke Center NYC.She prides herself in having been the first to present salsa work, twice, in the Danny& Sylvia Kaye Playhouse Theater at Hunter College. She most recently curated,produced, and choreographed a show in January of 2019 at Hunter College’s BlackBox Theater titled Calle Soul: Soul Street. Cory has danced for many artists, includingreggaeton sensation Don Omar. She also danced for and collaborated with ForzaMalizia Dance Co. Cory later found a passion for lighting design and has createdlighting design at venues like Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse, Black Box Theater,Peggy Theater, Jamaica Center Performing Arts Center, Ailey Citi Group Theater andmore. In 2019, Cory Co-Founded Soul Dance Co.: The Soul Experience as Artistic Directoralongside Kevin Williams as Co-Artistic Director. Cory Villegas is the Beacon DanceProgram Director and the Artistic Director of the Beacon Dance Company. It was for the Lehman HighSchool Dance Company that Cory created her first Salsawork “Acuyuye.” After graduating high school, she began teaching at Dancers DreamZzz and LehmanHigh School as a teaching artist. Continuing down the path of dance Cory studied atLehman College under Michael Manswell where she studied Dunham Technique.Curious about the possibility of pursuing a career in Dance Education she transferredto Hunter College where she obtained her Bachelor’s and Master's Degree in DanceEducation from the Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program. Since attending theprogram she’s had the opportunity to be mentored by international choreographerPedro Ruiz Jr. and Maura Donohue. Cory choreographed “Creciente” (2017),“Creciente: El Espiritu De La Selva,” (2018), “La Liberacion” (2018), “Calle Soul“(2018) & “F.R.E.E.D,” a works in progress in 2020. Her works have been presentedat the Bronx Borough Arts Dance Festival, The Hispanic Federation’s LGBTQ FuerzaFestival, 2019-2023 EstroGenius Festival, Ailey CitiGroup Theater for KoDaFe in NYC,The 2019-2023 Making Moves Dance Festival, The 2023 La MaMa Moves DanceFestival, 2020-2023 Jazz Choreography Enterprises Show and Clarke Center NYC.She prides herself in having been the first to present salsa work, twice, in the Danny& Sylvia Kaye Playhouse Theater at Hunter College. She most recently curated,produced, and choreographed a show in January of 2019 at Hunter College’s BlackBox Theater titled Calle Soul: Soul Street. Cory has danced for many artists, includingreggaeton sensation Don Omar. She also danced for and collaborated with ForzaMalizia Dance Co. Cory later found a passion for lighting design and has createdlighting design at venues like Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse, Black Box Theater,Peggy Theater, Jamaica Center Performing Arts Center, Ailey Citi Group Theater andmore. In 2019, Cory Co-Founded Soul Dance Co.: The Soul Experience as Artistic Directoralongside Kevin Williams as Co-Artistic Director. Cory Villegas is the Beacon DanceProgram Director and the Artistic Director of the Beacon Dance Company. BeaconHigh School She also taught Latin Fusion at RIOULT Dance Center and at 2ndGeneration South Bronx Kids under the direction of Tessie Marrero. Stella has performed at LincolnCenter out of doors and in Montreal with SoledadBarrio & Noche Flamenca, The Jeanette Stoner &Dancers in NYC and David Thomas’ company “WRT”.She currently attends Hunter College where shecontinues to gain experiences in house, contemporary,Jazz, and Afro diaspora froms. Stella is thrilled andhumbled to work with Soul Dance Company.Griselle Ramos, born and raised in Washington Heights, NYC, is acurrent Dance major at Hunter College and alumna of The BeaconSchool. She has been dancing since the age of five, and has beentrained in Hip Hop, West African, Modern, and Latin Dance. Grisellewas first introduced to dance at the Dance Theater of Harlem, thenwent on to the Harlem School of the Arts, where she continued herdance training in middle school. She became a student of The BeaconSchool in 2018 and joined the Beacon Dance Company in 2019. Afterbeing in the company for two years, Griselle was granted theopportunity to be one of the four Assistant Directors of the BeaconDance Company by former Director of the Beacon Dance Program, thelate Kimberly Elliott. In her senior year of high school, she wasmentored under the directorship of the current director of the BeaconDance Program, Cory “Nova” Villegas. After high school, Griselle joinedSoul Dance Co: The Soul Experience and is now currently in pursuit ofgetting her degree in Dance Education. At the age of 6, she started dancingwith her aunt at Jenn Studio 1 Dancing School on Farmers Blvd. She participated as acamp counselor where she was given the opportunity to choreograph African, Liturgicaland Hip-Hop for summer youth programs at the age of 13. In 2013 she joined theliturgical dance ministry at her church and found passion and purpose in her movement.Kiera embodies the word “Bliss.” Bliss- is the heavenly state of feeling peace and joy.Dance is her therapy and it has inspired her to expand her knowledge on therapeuticresources to promote self care. Duringhighschool , she began to learn K-pop dances, prompting her to joinmultiple K-pop cover teams. Her interest in K-pop ignited her passionfor Korean culture and language. In addition to Pretty Big Movement,Sasha is currently a member of Not Shy Dance Crew and To the BeatDance Crew, two NYC-based K-pop cover groups. When she isn’tdancing, Sasha is also a painter and mixed media artist, havingstudied art since highschool. About The Beacon Dance ComapnyThe Beacon Dance Company is an advanced levelelective course under the direction of Cory “Nova”Villegas that operates the entire school year. All BDCstudents are required to participate in allperformances and choreograph for the annual DanceMakers Collaborative performance. Students have theopportunity to work with guest artists andchoreographers, attend professional dance concerts,become experienced in taking classes and performingin professional settings and provide lecturedemonstrations to younger students in our communityoutreach program. Driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence,Rhapsody's teaching career flourished as she shared her expertise atBroadway Dance Center and Monsters of Hip Hop. Her influence extendedglobally, teaching in various countries, including the United States, London,Finland, Switzerland, Germany, and Australia. Fueled by a commitment tothe craft, Rhapsody founded Motivating Excellence, the pioneering dancetraining program in Commercial Dance. Boasting over a decade of intensivetraining and nurturing over 250 students, Motivating Excellence stands asthe premier training program for aspiring dancers. Recognized for herinnovative and visionary approach, Rhapsody continues to shatterboundaries in choreography and creative direction. Venturing into therealm of film and television, her choreography graces hit shows like AllAmerican, Homecoming, Truth Be Told, and Remember Me: The MahaliaJackson Story. Simultaneously, Rhapsody is passionately involved in herown projects, including the development of Blackhouse Manor and SirenAssassins, as well as showcasing her multifaceted talents through herhybrid dance company, R.ED (Rhapsody En Dance).14
