Red is For Axolotl Callisto

Discovering The World of Red Animals

But I'm not red!

By Daniel Yoo

I'm usually red but I like to be white/pink too.

Red is for Axolotl Callisto

These magnificent animals are unique and different in many ways. The Axolotl Callisto is known as the Mexican salamander in Mexico. They are less than 100 Axolotl Callisto in the world and are caught in the lake of Xochimilco. Scientists study and experiment with these animals in many ways. These creatures are endangered in today’s world and are being captured by unwanted fishermen.  While these animals are endangered, it has amazing abilities to share.

The Axolotl Callisto has many features that are amusing. Its most amazing ability is to heal. While other animals can heal, not all of them can grow all of the body parts or without a scar on where they lost it. The Axolotl Callisto can heal itself even though it has lost its body parts. For example, when lost a leg, the Axolotl Callisto can regrow its missing leg. When the leg regrows, there aren’t any scars that are visible. The Axolotl Callisto can provide new scientific advancements to the modern world of regeneration.

I know when to regrow

NameAxolotl Callisto.

Scientific nameAmbystoma Mexicanum.

Red is for Red Velvet Ant

Imagine you are walking on a dry place. You look down and see a little, fuzzy, red ant. Don’t pick it up! These “ants” are called Red Velvet Ants. These insects nickname is called the “Cow Killers”. They are actually wasps, not ants. Male wasps can fly away, so they don’t sting all the time. Only the females sting because they can’t fly up in the air like the males and have to protect themselves. Even if you can step on the ant to kill the creature, it takes a lot of time because they have "turtle shell". If you ever got stung by one you would know why they are called that. Seems dangerous right?

The Red Velvet Ants have painful stingers, that you want to stay away from. Some say that the velvet ant can even kill a cow because the sting hurts so much. Now you know why they are named that. I wouldn’t want to be a cow. The sting can make you shake in pain. Ouch! I or you wouldn't want to get stung by one.

Sting for the win

Red is for Scarlet Macaw

The Scarlet Macaw is a very colorful bird (mostly red) is flying through the air. It has a lot of feathers with different colors. They fly around the evergreen forest in South America. You probably can spot this bird easily up in the trees, if the trees don’t block your way. Oh no, there is predator coming to get the bird.

Ha! The predator didn’t get the Scarlet Macaw. It only got the feathers. You stare in awe. One of the Scarlet Macaw’s cool feature is the getaway. If it is going to get killed, the Scarlet Macaw will stay there. Then the attacker will bite the bird and will get a mouthful of feathers. Cool, isn’t it? These birds have a secret get away from flying away if danger is near.

I am a “runaway”.

Red is for Strawberry Dart Frog

This attractive bright red frog can be easily spotted or not. Their name is the strawberry Dart Frog. The bottom half of the frog can be blue/red. Their nickname can be also called the blue jeans if they have a blue bottom. The appearance can be red/blue. Their backs can have some black dots or it can just have zero black dots. When you spot one, don’t touch it!

This Strawberry Dart Frog is deadly in the wild. The skin of the frog is poisonous. Due to that, the frog is toxic, the idea of touching the little amphibian would not be an intelligent idea. The frog’s poison depends on its diet. In the wild, they are poisonous and in the zoo, they are not. In the zoo, they are fed differently than in the wild, so the zoo animal doesn’t have toxic skin. Isn’t that amazing, that diet can change how it survives!

I'm deadly

Western Scorpionfish

Pretend you are in the ocean. You are going near the stones to look at some gorgeous coral reefs. Then you spot something that doesn’t belong. Then you realize it is a stone fish. When you think there is only one type of fish that stings. well, that's not true; there is a Western Scorpionfish too and many other that sting. You stay. Then the fish jumps and almost gets you by the fins on the top. Well, that was a close call and you’re lucky.

The scorpion fish hides in between the ocean rocks. It jumps out and stuns its prey. Wow! The Scorpionfish has strong venom that can be very painful. They sting with laser-sharp fins on the top of the body. You would not want to be near it.

I am the next chameleon but in the water

Red is for Red-Bellied Black Snake

This animal is black on the top with a red belly. You know it, the Red-Bellied Black Snake. This snake has venom, but it is less fatal than other snake bites. Just in case, seek medical care immediately. If you were this animal would be happy to be this reptile.

When you think of bright red in the wild, what do you think of? Pretty, death, and ect. No, it means poison/venom. Well, the Red-Bellied Black Snake has a red stomach, so the animals are scared of it. They think it has strong venom, but it actually doesn't. Well, if it wasn’t for “trickery” the Red-Bellied Black Snake would probably have to run away.

You can see as deadly, but I'm not

NameRed-Bellied Black Snake.

Scientific name: Pseudechis Porphyriacus.

Size: 39 ½ inches long.

Christmas Island Red Crab

Look over there, that whole street is red! You wonder what it could be. Then you see up close and it has larger, wide claws that are pretty big for their size. These crabs are called the Christmas Island Crabs. They are bright red and travel together. They fill the streets when it is time to breed. Come along and see what they do!

Unusual male crab is the only species that migrate together to lay eggs with the females. Isn’t that crazy, but probably it is because all males are just lazy. There are 100s and 100s in the world and only 1 species of crabs migrate with female crabs. This uncommon behavior gives scientist questions.

I’m weird but it’s true.

 NameChristmas Island Red Crab.

Red Salamander

Woah, get shades on because you're in for looking at Red Salamander. They have black spots on their back and yellow looking eyes. They only have four toes on their front limbs and five on the back limbs. Typically many animals have lungs to breathe, but these creatures don’t. It is very similar to confused the Red-Spotted Newt, so don't get puzzled by the two.

Have you ever looked at an identical twin and you couldn’t tell the difference? Well same with this amphibian. It gets mixed up with the poisonous Red Newt. When the predator sees this animal, it thinks it is the Red Newt. So, the predator doesn’t bother this animal. While this animal feels like a king some of the predators will “bow down” to it. Isn’t that funny.

I “have” a “Twin”.

Is that the red-spotted newt? AH!

Purus Red Howler

When you wake up in the morning you might hear birds chirping.  However, in Brazil, monkeys called the Purus Red Howler howls, in the morning in place of your monkey calls. These monkeys can be heard far away as far as 3 miles. These creatures can be very land when heard up close. If I were you, I would not be happy to be woken up by these monkeys.

Holding on a branch with its tail, the Purus Red Howler tries to get food from a far away branch. The monkeys use it tails to hold on branches so they won’t fall. It’s like a fifth arm to them. It uses his/her tail when it’s looking for foods. Their prehensile tail helps them collect food for their troop. The mammal’s long and strong tail can have a better grip on a branch, so they don’t fall.

 FIfth Arm. Nice!

Eastern red-spotted newt

Do you know the difference between a newt and salamander? A newt is a type of salamander. They have black spots on the top of their bodies. The Eastern Red-Spotted Newt lives in the shallow watered rivers in Connecticut. They would like to live in slow-moving bodies of water. These fascinating Eastern Red-Spotted Newt sense of healthy wetlands and forests, so when visiting Connecticut, make sure to have a lookout for these creatures.

Pretend your an animal. You are desperate for food. You find an Eastern Red-Spotted Newt. You catch and eat. It tastes unfavorable and you spit it out. The skin of the newt is poisonous. If you try to eat the creature, it will taste like you ate sock with boots mixed together (if that’s possible). If you find one, instead of catching and eat it, just admire the way it lives.

I look tasty?
