CONSULTING PROCESS

Page 6

STEP 1: ONBOARDING SESSIONSOne of the crucial onboarding steps in the college application process is J&B’s initial consultation and document submission phase. During this phase, clients are required to provide key documents, including their high school transcript, resume, and a list of chosen schools and intended majors. Additionally, clients are encouraged to write a one-page letter to a future roommate, allowing them to express their per-sonality and unique experiences. This step not only helps the advising team gain a comprehensive understanding of the student’s academic and extracurricular background but also sets the foundation for person-alized guidance throughout the application process. By gathering these materials, consultants can tailor their support to highlight the student’s strengths and distinctive qualities, ensuring that the nal application is both authentic and compelling.

STEP 2: J&B CLIENT PERSONAAt J&B, our signature step is creating a Client Persona for your college applications. This involves crafting a portrayal of clients that highlights their strengths, aspirations, and values in a compelling and authentic manner. This persona serves as the lens through which admissions committees perceive and evaluate an applicant’s candidacy. After assessing key criteria gathered from you, J&B helps you curate a persona that aligns closely with the mission and values of the colleges and universities being targeted. This persona will remain consistent across all components of the application, including essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities, fostering a cohesive and compelling portrayal that leaves a lasting impression on admis-sions ofcers. STEP 3: SCHOOL LIST / MAJORSJ&B Essay Consulting takes a personalized approach to helping clients identify the right colleges and majors to pursue. The process begins with a thorough review of the client’s unique “Client Persona”: a com-prehensive prole that captures academic strengths, extracurricular involvement, personal interests, and long-term goals. Consultants then engage in a collaborative dialogue with the client to understand any preferences regarding geographic location, campus culture, academic programs, and career aspirations.Using this information, J&B consultants draw on their professional expertise and admissions knowledge to curate a customized list of colleges and suggested majors. This list is carefully balanced to include a range of reach, match, and safety schools, while also incorporating institutions and programs that reect the client’s individuality and po-tential. The goal is not only to maximize the likelihood of acceptance but also to ensure that each option on the list offers a strong t (academically, socially, and professionally). This step involves empowering clients to make informed decisions about their educational future.

STEP 4: CUSTOMIZED PORTFOLIOCreative Writing Project or Research Project or Art ProjectHaving a writing or artistic portfolio can signicantly bolster an appli-cant’s college admissions prospects by showcasing creativity, skills, and unique voice. A writing portfolio may include samples of essays, short stories, poems, or articles that demonstrate your writing abili-ties. Similarly, artists can compile a collection of their artwork, such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, or digital designs, to exhibit their talent, technique, and creativity. These portfolios serve as tangible evidence of an applicant’s dedication, passion, and prociency in their chosen me-dium, providing admissions committees with a more comprehensive understanding of their capabilities beyond standardized test scores and grades. Our team carefully selects which portfolio is best for clients: Creative Writing Project Research ProjectArt Project

STEP 5: COMMON APP ESSAY PREP COURSEBefore diving into the actual drafting of their Common App essays, we ensure that clients are fully equipped with the foundational knowledge and creative tools necessary for success through a comprehensive, six-week “Common App Essay Prep” course. This intensive program is designed to demystify the college essay writing process.Throughout the course, students engage in a series of interactive les-sons that break down the purpose, structure, and expectations of the Common App essay. Consultants guide students through proven brain-storming techniques to help them uncover meaningful personal stories, and then demonstrate how to shape these stories into compelling nar-ratives. The course incorporates analysis of standout essay examples, highlighting a range of successful narrative styles from reective and humorous to emotionally resonant and intellectually driven. In that way, students can discover what kind of storytelling best suits their voice. In addition to learning how to craft strong hooks, build narrative arcs, and convey personal growth, students receive targeted instruction on outlining strategies, voice development, and revision techniques. By the end of the six weeks, each student produces a 300-word “trial” Com-mon App essay.

STEP 6: COMMON APP ESSAY PRODUCTIONThe Common App essay is a crucial component of the college applica-tion process which J&B will guide you through. This essay requires ap-plicants to respond to one of several prompts with a personal narrative or reection, typically limited to 650 words. Its signicance lies in its ability to transcend the constraints of test scores and grades, allowing students to provide context, depth, and personality to their applications. J&B guides its clients through choosing from the essay prompts provid-ed every year. Following are examples of the prompts: • Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. • The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? • Reect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? • Reect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you? • Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. • Describe a topic, idea, or concept you nd so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? • Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

STEP 7: COMPREHENSIVE RESUMEA resume is a concise document that outlines a client’s achieve-ments, experiences, and skills relevant to their academic and personal development. It serves as a snapshot of the applicant’s accomplishments beyond academic performance, including ex-tracurricular activities, volunteer work, internships, part-time jobs, and leadership roles. A well-crafted resume provides college ad-missions ofcers with a comprehensive overview of the client’s in-terests, pasions, and contributions to their community. At J&B, we emphasize the importance of writing in all of our client’s resumes.

Page 13

STEP 7: RECOMMENDATION NOTESProviding notes to a teacher who is writing a recommendation letter can signicantly enhance the quality and depth of the letter. J&B’s notes serve as invaluable insights into the student’s personality, achieve-ments, and aspirations, offering a more nuanced understanding beyond what may be evident from academic records alone. By highlighting specic experiences, anecdotes, and character traits, J&B helps clients guide their teachers to emphasize aspects of their candidacy that align closely with the desired attributes sought by ad-missions committees.

Page 14

STEP 8 & 9: SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAYSSupplemental essays serve as additional opportunities for applicants to showcase their unique qualities beyond what’s covered in the main application. These essays typically delve into specic aspects of an applicant’s background, experiences, or aspirations, allowing them to provide more depth and context to their candidacy. We typically divide these supplemental essays into two or three batches, for Early Decision and Regular Decision schools:Sample Supplemental Essay Prompts: • Please tell us more about your cultural background and identity in the space below. (150 words or fewer) • Tell us more about why this eld of study at [college] appeals to you. (100 words or fewer) • How did you spend your last two summers? (max 50 words) • What historical moment or event do you wish you could have witnessed? (max 50 words) • List the titles of the books, essays, poetry, short stories or plays you read outside of academic courses that you enjoyed most during secondary/high school. (75 words or fewer)

These are often opportunities to reafrm interest in the institution, update them on any achievements or developments since your initial application, and express continued enthusiasm for the school. J&B provides follow up support for these extra materials.
