Raw Plaster is a new collection by Fabric and Steel. Two color ways of heavy weight, textured linen – Natural and White – are coated with a light layer of plaster. The plaster layer achieves a textural quality unachievable in the weave alone. This process gives the linen an architectural quality with the appearance of a beautiful patina on a plaster wall. Architecture, conversing with the design and life of an interior space has been the guiding character in all of our collections. We have expressed this philosophy in many ways - but Raw Plaster is the most fully formed voice of this principle. The design inspiration for Raw Plaster comes not only from the material itself and architecture as form, but also from art. Specifically we were inspired by Alberto Burriand his Bianchi series. A collection of works using mixed media, including fabrics, to achieve an effect of unique textures and plaster like walls. Burri illuminates our relationship in art to tones and textures of whites used in traditional painting – as well as our relationship to the whites of household linens. The necessity of architecture as shelter, the organic movement of life in an interior space, the cultivated theories of art and design – these ideas are simultaneously expressed in Raw Plaster.F&S RAW PLASTERON LINEN

“ BURRI WAS FASCINATED BY THE central role of white in Western art: the plaster intonaco, or smooth ground underlying frescoes… In the Bianchi(whites), white comes into its own as color, process, and material. He rarely used an artist’s brush, choosing instead to spread on the pigments with his fingers, a palette knife, or a trowel—the tool of bricklayers and plasterers. The Bianchi thus make visible the different actions of whitening or covering in white, whether on a canvas or a wall. Some Bianchi are composed in whole or part of cotton duck, muslin, or linen fabric. The textiles are found pieces of biancheria, or household linens. “© 2015 The Solomon R.
