The beautiful, vast land of Canada is a wonderful place. Canada is located to North in the Western hemisphere. Canada is the second largest country in the world yet 90% of the population lives on only 5% of the land.                                                         Winters in Canada can be rough at times with temperatures dropping down to a colossal -40 degrees F with severe winds and chills. On average the temperature during the winter is about 5 degrees F when in parts of the U.S. it's average is 60 degrees F. Canada still has all four seasons, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring and some of them are quite nice. Summer might be the greatest season in

The Land

Canada due to it's climate making it a perfect 70 degrees F on average.

The Rocky Mountains, nicknamed The Rockies, are the largest mountain range in Canada. They are more than 3,000 miles long stretching from Alberta, Canada to New Mexico, United States. The Rockies have naturally formed 55 to 80 million years ago when a bunch of plates slid below the North American Plate. The North American Plate is a tectonic plate covering most of North America, Greenland, the Bahamas, Cuba, extreme northeastern Asia, and the Azores and parts of Iceland.

The Rockies are such a vast mountain range that they inhabit 66 mammal species. The Rockies are like a zoo with the number of animals in them. The Rockies include some animals such as the lynx and wolverine which are rare and very hard to come upon. Up in the trees, small pikas live in the rough cracks and crevices in the mountains. Mountain lions, coyotes, elk, black bears, marmots, bighorn sheep and moose all live in the area of the Rocky Mountain.

Canada is a big name when it comes to agriculture. They are the world's 5th largest agricultural exporter. Canada produces about 85% of the world's maple syrup and Canada is the world's largest grower and exporter of canola, pulses (peas, lentils, and beans), flaxseed, and durum wheat, which is the kind they use to make pasta.

Agriculture and Food

Canada is a wheat producing machine, they produce around 15 million tons of wheat a year!

If you didn't know Canada has a French descent and is the second most spoken language in Canada. Jacques Cartier is a French explorer who discovered Canada in 1543. The 6.5 million Canadians that speak French make up one-third of the population. Out of that 6.5 million, 80 percent live in Quebec. Montreal also in Quebec, is the third largest French-speaking city next to Kinshasa which is the second most French-speaking city in the world. The most French spoken city in the world, probably as you guessed, is Paris.

Canada is known for its mammals such as American bison, Arctic hare, little brown bat, beaver, moose, black bear, red fox, badger, Canada lynx, reindeer (caribou), coyote, grizzly bears, gray wolf, bobcat, etc. The most well known are the bear, moose, and beaver.

The moose is the largest member of the deer family and is kind of intimidating looking at one face to face. You can tell a male from a female by their antlers. The male's antlers are broad and flat while the female's antlers are twig-like and skinny. Moose tend to live in the forest.

They are herbivores and the amount of food they eat changes throughout the year. During summer there is plenty of food while during winter they can't find that much food.

Bears are carnivores unlike the moose. There are eight species of bear, the Asiatic Bear, Black Bear, Brown Bear, Giant Panda, Polar Bear, Sloth Bear, Spectacled Bear, and the Sun Bear. These bears can be found throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Common characteristics of modern bears include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, small rounded ears, shaggy hair, paws with five claws, and short tails.

Canada has invented some pretty useful things you may not know were invented by Canadians. Some of these things are the paint roller, light bulb, garbage bag, and the egg carton. I mean what else would hold your eggs. The egg carton was invented by Joseph Coyle in 1911 because there was a feud between a farmer and a hotel owner because the eggs were delivered broken. Harry Wasylyk invented the garbage bag in 1950

Canada has some pretty cool sports that they play such as lacrosse, hockey, kayaking, and canoeing.

Lacrosse is the main sport of Canada and originated from Canada's indigenous people. They were observed by European settlers. The name came from French settlers who believed it looked like a bishop's crozier. In French crozier is "crosse". That's how it got the name of La Crosse.

Patriot William George Beers, known as the father of lacrosse made a pamphlet explaining and listing the rules. There was then later in 1867 an organization that made the National Lacrosse Association.

In the 20th century, lacrosse was the most popular sport in Canada. The Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) now recognizes four separate fields or types of lacrosse: box, men’s field, women’s field, and inter-lacrosse. Box became popular in the 1930s, as teams took advantage of the empty hockey arenas that weren't in use during the summer. It’s still the most popular form of lacrosse in Canada, while in America field hockey seems to be number one.

Hockey was developed in Canada in Montreal. The first indoor ice hockey game was organized on March 3, 1875. Some aspects of that game such as the length of the hockey rink have stayed the same throughout all this time.

Now the NHL is the most dominant professional hockey league with 31 teams and one of those teams is new to the NHL this year. That team is the Golden Knights of Vegas.

The NHL was organized on November 26, 1917, after the suspension of its previous organization, The NHA. The NHL immediately took over as one of the leagues that contested for the Stanley Cup in an annual interleague competition before a series of league mergers.

There are some major brands in Canada and the one I'm going to focus on is Canada Goose. Canada Goose is a Canadian clothing company who uses real coyote fur in their clothing and accessories. Despite the fact that the majority of Canadians despises the use of fur, Canada Goose actually celebrates the trapping and killing of wildlife for unnecessary, decorative fur trim.

In an effort to change people's minds, Canada Goose has a “fur policy." Unfortunately, the statements made in this “policy” are not made to inform the conversation on fur, but rather misinform the public with the idea of carrying on with "business" as usual.

Canada's government is a representative democracy which means each citizen has the right to elect a representative for each level of government.

There are three branches of their government which are the House of Commons and the Senate. The house of commons is a component of the Canadian government with elected members known as Members of Parliment. There are currently 338 members in the House of Commons. They spend most of their time debating and voting on bills. They also spend their time working on issues that are going on in Canada.

The Senate. The Senate has 105 members that are elected by the Governor General by which are recommended by the Prime minister. The Senate works on the bills that were passed on through the House of Commons. It could also make its own bills or laws except those to spend public money or income taxes. A bill cannot become a law until it is passed by the Senate. Senators also study major social, legal and economic issues through their committee work.

Then there's the Queen. Canada is a constitutional monarchy. This means that the laws governing Canada make the Queen as the proper Head of State. All federal laws are made in the Queen's name. She also performs most of the important ceremonial duties when visiting Canada.
