Typical Schedule:

The typical day of a 2nd grade teacher begins with morning preparation. This is the short amount of time in the morning where teachers can prepare themselves for the day and do any last minute touch-ups for lesson plans. After this, the student goes to the door to greet their students and welcome them in and get them excited for the day. Students put away their belongings in their assigned cupboards and are seated for the days lessons. In a typical day, a 2nd grade teacher teaches phonics, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. At some schools, there is also time that is allocated for Computer Labs. At around late morning to mid-day, students have lunch and go to recess. They return to the classroom and wind down with DEAR (Drop everything and read), before moving on to their different lessons. At the end of the day, the students may have time to attend a special area class such as art, gym, or music. They return to the classroom to pack up their belongings, stack chairs, then go home. Once the students are gone, the teacher makes time to grade any homework or tests and prepare for the next day.

Some statistics:

1. The average size of a second-gradeclassroom is about 20-25 students.

2. The demographic information is for OrangeCounty, California. The average household averages around $78,428 annually. Theracial demographic is made up of mostly white Americans, then Hispanics, and then Asian-Americans. There are also a few black Americans. The county has more females than males.

3. The average education level of parents inOrange County is high school graduates or above. A lot of parents who grew upin middle-income households attended the schools that populate most of Southern California while the parents who grew up in low-income households at least obtained a high school degree.

Content Learning:

Second grade teachers are responsible for teaching their students all subjects. This includes history and science, which some people expect other teachers to instruct. If a teacher specializes in another field, they can also teach “specialized” classes such as art or music. Either way, no matter the subject, teachers are responsible for keeping their students engaged and on task with their lesson plans. In addition, second grade is a year used to cover and reinforce what was learned in the first grade. Teachers must evaluate their students at the beginning of the year to see where they are at in their learning, and then spend time going over any first grade benchmarks that were missed.

Students and Intellectual Development:

At this age, students are developingintellectually at a fast rate. Now with the knowledge of reading, writing, and basic counting skills, students can start to build upon their knowledge. One major reason for this, is that students now have a longer attention span. With a longer attention span, students can learn more and stay concentrated on one topic or lesson. Furthermore, children are willing to take on more responsibility. Math wise, students can understand money, the concept of space, and tell time.

Students and Emotional Development: 

Emotional development is characterized bya child learning how to experience, express, and manage their emotion. At this age, students are accustomed to the 8 hour school days, and are able to feel relaxed and comfortable at school. This being said, this may be the age in which students start to develop their personalities.

Students and Physiological developments:

At this age children are still growing, and their permanent teeth start appearing. More rest at night, and weight gain is typical for this stage of development.

Students and Social developments:

At this point in the student’s life, they are able to talk with both adults and children. Vocabulary continues to grow which allows the child to sound more eloquent when they talk. Children at this age also have learned how to make friends and are familiar with which friends they get along best with. School wise, children understand that there are consequences for their action. Not listening to the teacher or disobeying rules is something the child knows will result in punishment. Children are also now capable of identifying their emotions, but continue to work on knowing when is an appropriate time to display that emotion. For example, while students may still cry in front of their peers, most become embarrassed at displaying this kind of emotion. 

Some Challenges for 2nd Graders:

Many students at this age may struggle with their growing independence. After becoming comfortable with their school days spent without their parents by their side, students may struggle with the idea of being more responsible. Homework is given in this grade, and for some students the transition from schoolwork being done only at school, to then being brought home may be an emotional and stressful one. Students at this age will also need to learn how to conflict-resolute because friendships may change. While a child’s friend begins to develop their personality, they may begin to voice different opinions which can be hard for children to accept especially if they are stubborn.

A Second Grader and some of their Favorites:

Some favorite and classic books for kids at this age may be books such as Frog and Toad, or other picture books that give lessons. Poetry can be introduced to students at this age so they are familiar with it as they move forward in their schooling. Additionally, beginning level chapter books such as Magic Treehouse or Junie B. Jones series can be a good start to introduce children to chapter books, and demonstrate to them that not every book includes pictures. Children at this age love upbeat music just like when they were younger, and can begin to pay attention to popular songs that are on the radio. In regard to television, children at this age enjoy Disney movies and shows, but may also start to like movies that have a climax and include real people as the actors.


At school, children are expected to comply with the teacher. This means listening and following directions. They are also expected to treat fellow students with respect, and be civil towards all peers. When the student leaves the school, they are expected to complete any homework and often must show a signature from a parent the next day at school that signifies they did their work. At home, children are expected to contribute to the home. This often includes doing simple chores such as keeping the bedroom clean or putting away toys.
