My Genius Hour Project

By: Pankudi Gupta

Welcome to my genius hour project. For this project every student on the Gold team had to pick a project that they would be working on throughout the course of the year. Our projects were expected to be on something that we really enjoyed to do, and based on something that troubled us. Some students were troubled by the lack of manners, whereas others were bothere by the act of bullying and how common it had become.

My Genius Hour project is on the people who invented or helped us as a whole to become a better place. These people are well known, but everyday people don't really know what they have done to make Earth a better place. For my project I will be making 3 portraits of such people using the art form known as quilling. Quilling is an art form that involves the use of stripes of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to creat decorative designs. I wanted to pick this as my genius hour project, because I was intersted in learning what other people of this world have done for me, and I wanted to pay them my respect.

The three people that I decided to make a portrait of include Bill Gates. Malala Yousafzai, and Mother Teresa. It was very difficult for me to pick only 3 people out of the thousands of people that work everyday of their lives for us to have a better future to live in.

This booklet includes why these people are important and what they have done for us.

The Talibaan had issued a death threat against Malala for her activism. Her parent took the threat lightly thinking that the group wouldn't hurt a child. Her parents were proven wrong when one day a gunman boarded her bus and fired a gun right at her; the bullet then traveled down her neck. Two other girls were also injured during the attack.

Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. Malala attended a school that her father had founded. After the Talibaan began attacking girls' schools in Swat, Malala gave a speech about her rights to education, and how dare a the talibaan take those away from the people at Peshawar. Pakistan.

In early 2009, she began blogging for BBC about her experience about living under the Talibaan's threats to deny her education. With a growing public platform, Yousofzai continued to speak out about her and the rights of all women to an education.

The shooting left Malala in critical condition. SHe was flown to a military hospital and to receieve furthur treatment was send to Birmingham, England.

The shooting resulted in massive outpouring of support towards Yousafzai, which continued during her ecovery.

Despite the Taliban's threats, Malala remains a staunch advocatr for the power of education
