Mrs. Watts 1st Grade Class of 2017-2018

Here are some samples of the students work on this project!

Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

Using this Core Objective shown above, each student was given the opportunity to choose an animal that interested them. As a class, we took a trip to our school library so that each student could select a couple books on their chosen animal. They studied their books and selected facts about their chosen animal that they wanted to share with the class. They then constructed a poster with at least one drawn or printed picture of their animal and provided 4 sentences about their animal and a conclusion sentence about what they learned. They were then given the opportunity to share what they learned with the rest of the class.

Field Trip to the Zoo

After we studied animals as a class to work on the student's animal reports, we decided to continue sparking their interest of animals by taking a trip to the local zoo as a class! They found it very interesting as many of the students got to see the animals they had studied up close and personal. The students will remember so much more about their animal reports as they got the opportunity to learn hands-on by our field trip to the zoo.

After learning more about many different animals on our trip to the zoo, I wanted to let them use that excitement and interest to practice more writing. They then got the opportunity to reinforce what they learned about writing sentences and conclusions by completing a written assignment about the trip when we returned.

After the Trip...

This is the worksheet that the students used to write about their trip to the zoo and what they learned.
