Brooklyn For PeaceWe are excited to be hosting our 10th annual gala, in-person again this year! Since 2013, Brooklyn For Peace has held this event to honor organi-zations and individuals who have played a leadership role in working to nd nonviolent resolutions to conict. The name of our award, PathMakers to Peace, emphasizes that there are many roads to reaching the goal of a peaceful and just world.Welcome to the 2023 PathMakers to Peace Gala!Charlotte Phillips, M.D.Chairperson, Brooklyn For PeaceMichaela Czerkies, Executive Director, Brooklyn For PeaceIn solidarity,This year, we are proud to honor Ana Aguirre, Dr. Partha Banerjee, Mimi Rosenberg, Sarah Leah Whitson, and Veterans for Peace NYC Chapter 34. Each of our PathMakers honorees has made outstanding contributions to peace and social justice through active education, advocacy, community orga-nizing, and/or music and arts. We are primarily an educational organization, with activism as an integral part of our mission. We are dedicated to connecting global and local issues. Over the years the specic issues have changed, but urgent challenges remain: to end US militarism; to promote social justice at home and abroad; to tackle the climate emergency; to address the continuing impact of white supremacy and the profound racial inequalities that still characterize our country. As we continue our campaign to sustain the future of Brooklyn For Peace, we are grateful for your ongoing support and commitment. We greatly appreciate your participation and many contributions to Brooklyn For Peace over the years. Thank you for being here tonight with us!2

Ana Aguirre was the Executive Director of the United Community Centers (UCC), a multi-service, community-based organization located in East New York, Brooklyn. Ana began working for UCC in 1993 as a community organizer and health educator. Ana worked with various East New York groups, and developed and implemented health and social campaigns in East New York. She engaged local taxi drivers, all of them immigrants, to support annual community events to raise HIV/STDs awareness and education. Ana played a key role in bringing immigrant services such as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), citizenship classes, and free immigration assistance to UCC. She was actively involved in the development and implementation of East New York Farms!, a community urban agriculture project that engaged community residents to address food justice by promoting sustainable agriculture and community-led economic development. From the beginning of the COVID pandemic, she personally organized and distributed food to residents weekly until 2022. ucceny.orgAna AguirreDr. Partha Banerjee is a human rights activist working on peace, justice, immigrant, labor, and climate rights movements; writer; educator; public speaker; media critic; and a movie and music enthusiast. Born and raised in Kolkata, he is now based in Brooklyn with frequent visits to India, where he works with many grassroots organizations to defeat the politics of hate, violence, bigotry and war. Partha has worked with and interviewed Noam Chomsky a number of times since his acquaintance with him in 2000 when he was a journalism student at Columbia University; he introduced him at BFP as the 2014 PathMakers awardee. Partha’s books, media discussions and writings focus on religious, social, caste and gender equality, as well as corporate media’s monopoly, exclusion of substantive news, and brainwashing. He can be found on Wikipedia, and his blog at onenalblog.com.Dr. Partha Banerjee4

Mimi worked for many years as the Director of the South Bronx Workers’ Center, and helped to found The City-wide Action Group Against Neighborhood Destruction & For Low-Rent Housing, as well as the The Black United Front Support Committee. Mimi produces the multi-award winning Building Bridges, now the oldest, longest running, labor-oriented, radio program in the country, on its home station WBAI 99.5 FM. Its companion program Equal Rights and Justice is nationally distributed. These programs are intended to educate, agitate and organize to empower people with the tools and initiative to create the better world that we know is possible. wbai.orgMimi RosenbergSarah Leah Whitson is the Executive Director of Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN). Founded by the late Jamal Khashoggi, DAWN works to reform U.S. policy in the Middle East. Brooklyn For PeaceBrooklyn For Peace is committed to eliminating war and the social injustices that are its causes. We seek to empower our community and ourselves to be an active force in securing a peaceful future for generations to come. We assert that negotiation and diplomacy lead to better outcomes in the resolution of conict than military action. We advocate for U.S. policies based on peace, justice, democracy, human rights, and respect for international law.We work to: • transfer resources from military to human needs, leading to economic and social justice within and among nations.• eliminate nuclear, biological, chemical, and conventional weapons by all entities in an internationally coordinated process.• resolve international conicts peacefully via the United Nations and the promotion of internationally accepted rules of law.A demonstration in the late 1980s opposing the establishment of a nuclear homeport in Staten Island. Our Mission7

Brooklyn For Peacefounded in 1984Brooklyn For Peace was founded in 1984 by nursery-school parents who were spurred into action by the U.S. invasion of Grenada. We soon joined other groups in a coalition which succeeded in deterring the Navy from opening a nuclear-capable homeport on Staten Island, and opposing U.S. intervention in Central America. We mobilized local opposition to the 1991 Gulf War, while ghting to preserve welfare, Medicaid, and public education in NYC. In the wake of September 11, 2001, we organized Brooklyn communities to oppose a U.S. military response, advocating for the protection of our civil liberties and against the detention of immigrants arrested without charges. We initiated a campaign aimed at high school youth to counteract the misleading claims of military recruiters, offering concrete advice on getting an education and career training. We regularly hold forums, providing historical and political analysis on a wide variety of topics. And we’re on street corners and fairs too. Have you noticed those posters in neighborhood store windows declaring that “Refugees and Immigrants Are Welcome Here?” That’s the work of Brooklyn For Peace volunteers. We all have obligations to family, friends, schools and jobs, but through Brooklyn For Peace we are nding ways to work for peace with justice to whatever extent we are able. Please join us.Visit our new website to nd out more about our organization at www.brooklynpeace.org.12

Spend some time next summer at World Fellowship Center Wake up where social justice meets nature! A great place for progressive minded families or individuals to vacation, meet, swim, hike and exchange ideas in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. It’s no luxury hotel; but it’s a place where peace and justice activists and supporters can spend some vacation time with like-minded people. Kids will love the daily Children’s Fellowship program. And parents will appreciate the “free time.” Just ask Ed Goldman & Sam Koprak about it! Request a brochure or check it out on line. worldfellowship.org office@worldfellowship 31
