2To our valued communityChief Executive OcerReport and President'sAs we reect on the past year, we are inspired by our collective resilience in the face of the enormous challenges and growing needs in our community. Our clients, sta, donors, and partners have proven time and time again that we can nd strength in each other and persevere through dicult times. Our community is facing heightened mental health struggles, often compounded by the trauma of October 7 and the alarming rise in antisemitism. Despite experiencing their own sense of trauma, our JF&CS sta rallied to provide comfort and compassion to each other and our community. Many have found new meaning and purpose in their work, and have connected on a profound level with their clients. We are privileged to share some of their stories in this report.Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have been able to accomplish so much over the past year — from ongoing counselling and grief support to a swift Israel Crisis response. Your support has been a lifeline, enabling us to provide comfort and dignity to so many in our community. Through partnerships with other community organizations, we have been able to oer innovative and adaptive services. Collaborations make us stronger, allowing us to impact our community across employment, housing, nancial services, and supports to newcomers. We want to commend our lay leadership and board of directors for rising to the occasion, taking on additional responsibilities. They proudly represented JF&CS at community events, fundraising initiatives, and volunteer opportunities such as packing boxes to send to Israel. Looking ahead, we are excited to develop our new strategic plan. The 2025-2030 strategic plan will build on JF&CS’s achievements, identify evolving community needs, and provide opportunities for future sustainability and growth. With many in our community feeling isolated and fearful, we remain committed to upholding dignity and ensuring that no one feels alone in their time of need.Thank you again for your dedicated support and belief in our mission. 4“Coming into work on that rst Monday after Oct. 7, was probably one of the hardest moments in my working career. We were all crying together and supporting each other in this big state of unknown. Then Talyah reached out, stressing that we must take care of each other rst before we support our community. It suddenly felt like we were sitting shiva, having a time to mourn, be in our own shock and grief, yet knowing we had the support of each other. I soon was connecting with my clients. I saw the impact of Oct. 7th on their lives. At the same time, I was inspired by the way they were taking care of themselves, being strong, or sharing new goals of resiliency. With the approaching Oct. 7 anniversary amidst our High Holidays, I will be reecting with my community about how we learn to live with our grief and how to continue to take one step at a time. 6“I am not Jewish but at the back of my mind, I was thinking: how would I feel if there were such an attack on my family back home? I found out about a UJA telethon, helping to raise funds for urgent needs in Israel and I was proud to volunteer. I had also begun reaching out to colleagues, to oer my support. I realized so many of them were in pain but still putting themselves out there to provide services to clients. Some, I met in person, where they gave me updates on how their families were doing or how they were feeling. 8“We began oering emergency services for the Israeli community in Toronto soon after October 7. People were ooding into the Vaughan JCC seeking support, including Israelis who were visiting Toronto prior to the Oct. 7 terror attacks or those who had just arrived because their homes in Israel were being evacuated. As York Region is really the ‘hub’ for the Israeli Community, we opened our oces at 1 Open Door and went throughout the JCC, welcoming people in Hebrew, oering our support and showing them in very real and practical ways, that the community was there to support them. Many on my team had done emergency response before, whether assisting Ukrainian refugees or supporting community members following the 2018 van attack. Unique to Oct. 7, my team was also experiencing their own trauma, with many of us having family and close friends in Israel. We needed to care for each other even as we cared for others. My team went above and beyond, regularly arriving early, staying late and volunteering on Sundays to support Israelis new to Toronto and the Israeli community already living here. We were joined by our long-time partners – JIAS, JVS and the Vaughan JCC team – as well as generous donors in the community and so many volunteers. Over the next 6 months, we connected over 200 people with community services, ongoing support, trauma counselling, cultural events, and essentials such as winter clothes and diapers. 11“Since Oct. 7, I have felt so much worry because a lot of my family is in Israel. My grandfather is 91 and lives near Haifa, which is close to the Lebanese border. He can’t make it down the stairs to the bomb shelter, so when there’s ghting, he and my grandmother lie on the oor. For me personally, it has been harder to go back to business as usual, without wanting to check in with people or read the news. But for me, coming in to work at JF&CS has felt like a safe place in my life. Everywhere else, I have felt like I need to look over my shoulder. This year, what I’ve tried to do in my work is to help JF&CS sta with their IT requests the best and fastest I can because I know how important their work is – now more than ever. A key project has been rehabilitating old laptops or buying new ones to benet Ukrainian refugees and other vulnerable members in our community.
