Te Whaea: National Dance & Drama Centre is home to the NewZealandSchoolofDance Located on Wellington’s green belt nature reserve, five minutes drive from the heart of the city, Te Whaea* is architecturally designed, with large spaces and high ceilings contributing to an exhilarating atmosphere. Associates travel from different locations in NewZealand to the NewZealandSchoolofDance in Wellington for four weekends of tuition a year.THE SCHOLARS PROGRAMME The Scholars Programme provides training for classical ballet students from the age of 10 (Year 6 at school). The programme focuses on the principles of movement, incorporating the definitions of technique as required in ballet, while embracing musicality and artistry. Classes are small and the ballet training is supported by allied subjects such as body conditioning. Classes are held on a weekly basis for lower North Island students and students on the National Scholars programme visit NZSD seven times during the year to attend training. WINTER SCHOOLWinter School has been an annual fixture in the School’s calendar for over forty years.This five-day course, offering intensive tuition in classical ballet and contemporary dance, is held in the first week of the winter school holidays. The programme offers young dancers the opportunity to learn from the School’s esteemed faculty of tutors alongside foremost national and international guest teachers. SUMMER INTENSIVEThis course offers young dancers classes specialised in either classical ballet or contemporary dance. The School is funded by the Ministry of Education through the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and is registered with the NewZealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) as a private training establishment. The NewZealand Diploma in Dance and the NewZealandSchoolofDance Diploma in Dance Performance sit at Level 6 and Level 7 on the NewZealand Qualifications Framework respectively. The Level 7 Diploma is equivalent to an undergraduate degree, allowing the possibility of postgraduate study and many career pathways. WORLD-CLASS TRAININGThe NewZealandSchoolofDance full-time course prepares graduates for the multifaceted repertoire demanded of a professional dancer in the 21st century.The School provides world-class training to students between the ages of 16 and 20. Students complete either a two or a three-year intensive training programme majoring in classical ballet or contemporary dance, while maintaining a strong grounding in both subject areas.Graduates of the School leave with a strong technical skill base as well as an open-minded approach to a career path that is wide, varied and relevant.NEWZEALAND DIPLOMA IN DANCE (LEVEL 6)The NewZealand Diploma in Dance (Level 6) is a two- year course that equips students for a performance career in dance.Upon completion, graduates will be prepared and ready to enter either a third year working towards a NewZealandSchoolofDance Diploma in Dance Performance (Level 7), or their first professional industry placement.The first year focuses on the foundation of technique for both classical ballet and contemporary dance.It also introduces a range of allied subjects, both practical and academic. IN THE SPOTLIGHTHARRISON JAMESHarrison James joined the New Zealand School of Dance Associates’ Programme in 2004 and went on to begin full-time dance studies at the School in 2007. He then continued his dance education at the San Francisco Ballet School.He began his professional career at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet followed by Béjart Ballet Lausanne. Moving back to Canada in 2013 Harrison accepted a contract with the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto and was quickly promoted to Principal Dancer by 2016. After an incredibly busy season in 2024/25 dancing for both the National Ballet of Canada and San Francisco Ballet, Harrison is now a Principal Dancer exclusively with San Francisco Ballet.Over his career, Harrison has worked with some of the world’s most pre-eminent and in demand choreographers, danced some of ballets most challenging and sought after roles and done so in countries all over the world, including New Zealand when he was part of the creation of Royal New Zealand Ballet’s The Firebird in 2021.Some career highlights include, dancing Prince Florimund in Rudolf Nureyev’s The Sleeping Beauty, being part of the creation for Crystal Pite’s Angels’ Atlas in 2019, dancing Des Grieux in Kenneth Macmillan’s Manon and creating a title character, Crake for Wayne Mcgregor’s full length production of MADDADDAM in 2022.SARAH FOSTER-SPROULLAfter graduating from the New Zealand School of Dance, Sarah Foster-Sproull progressed into a diverse performance career working for some of New Zealand’s most exciting choreographers including Malia Johnston, Michael Parmenter and Douglas Wright. Sarah was a founding dancer and choreographer of the New Zealand Dance Company, Artistic Director of Foster Group Dance funded by Creative New Zealand, and in 2020 became Choreographer in Residence at the Royal New Zealand Ballet where she has created five premiere works.Sarah has choreographed works for the New Zealand School of Dance, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, New York Choreographic Institute at the New York City Ballet, Footnote New Zealand Dance, Guangdong Modern Dance Company (China), The Human Expression Dance Company (Singapore), and VOU (Fiji). Her work has toured extensively across Aotearoa New Zealand, and to China, Edinburgh, Fiji, the United Kingdom and the United States.Sarah is a Senior Lecturer in Dance Studies at the University of Auckland and holds a PhD in creative practice, which won the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Best Doctoral Thesis (2025). IN THE SPOTLIGHTHARRISON JAMESHarrison James joined the New Zealand School of Dance Associates’ Programme in 2004 and went on to begin full-time dance studies at the School in 2007. He then continued his dance education at the San Francisco Ballet School.He began his professional career at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet followed by Béjart Ballet Lausanne. Moving back to Canada in 2013 Harrison accepted a contract with the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto and was quickly promoted to Principal Dancer by 2016. After an incredibly busy season in 2024/25 dancing for both the National Ballet of Canada and San Francisco Ballet, Harrison is now a Principal Dancer exclusively with San Francisco Ballet.Over his career, Harrison has worked with some of the world’s most pre-eminent and in demand choreographers, danced some of ballets most challenging and sought after roles and done so in countries all over the world, including New Zealand when he was part of the creation of Royal New Zealand Ballet’s The Firebird in 2021.Some career highlights include, dancing Prince Florimund in Rudolf Nureyev’s The Sleeping Beauty, being part of the creation for Crystal Pite’s Angels’ Atlas in 2019, dancing Des Grieux in Kenneth Macmillan’s Manon and creating a title character, Crake for Wayne Mcgregor’s full length production of MADDADDAM in 2022.SARAH FOSTER-SPROULLAfter graduating from the New Zealand School of Dance, Sarah Foster-Sproull progressed into a diverse performance career working for some of New Zealand’s most exciting choreographers including Malia Johnston, Michael Parmenter and Douglas Wright. Sarah was a founding dancer and choreographer of the New Zealand Dance Company, Artistic Director of Foster Group Dance funded by Creative New Zealand, and in 2020 became Choreographer in Residence at the Royal New Zealand Ballet where she has created five premiere works.Sarah has choreographed works for the New Zealand School of Dance, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, New York Choreographic Institute at the New York City Ballet, Footnote New Zealand Dance, Guangdong Modern Dance Company (China), The Human Expression Dance Company (Singapore), and VOU (Fiji). Her work has toured extensively across Aotearoa New Zealand, and to China, Edinburgh, Fiji, the United Kingdom and the United States.Sarah is a Senior Lecturer in Dance Studies at the University of Auckland and holds a PhD in creative practice, which won the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Best Doctoral Thesis (2025). It houses many national dance, theatre, film and music institutions, including the Royal NewZealand Ballet, Footnote New Zealand Dance, Wingnut Films/Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings, King Kong), the Museum of NewZealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the NewZealand Film Archive and NewZealand Symphony Orchestra. Wellington hosts events such as the NZ Festival, the International Film Festival, the LUX Light Festival and the World of Wearable Art.
