PROGRAM NOTES JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH ORCHESTRAL SUITE NO 4 IN D MAJOR BWV 1069 Johann Sebastian Bach composed four orchestral suites between 1724 and 1731 These works are beautiful examples of Bach s instrumental writing Most of the body of his work at that time was religious choral music due to his position as Music Director for St Thomas Church in Leipzig Germany In the Baroque era an orchestral suite was a set of French dances preceded by an overture Such suites were likely pioneered by French composer Jean Baptise Lully and his contemporaries in which they compiled music from ballets into a set of movements for instruments which always began with the corresponding ballet s overture Though Bach s first two suites utilized modest orchestral forces two oboes one bassoon strings and basso continuo Suite No 3 and Suite No 4 take advantage of a larger orchestra including an additional oboe three trumpets timpani and an expanded string section An overture in the French style is typically separated into three sections slow fast slow The opening is a stately march that gives way to a faster highly syncopated middle section full of energetic and playful rhythms that skip around the ensemble from one section to another The stately march reemerges seamlessly to round out the movement The second movement is a set of bour es dances set in a quick double time Movement three is a gavotte which though very formal sounding was originally a peasant dance that originated in Dauphin in the southeast of France The menuet of which there is a set in movement four is a dance in triple meter that likely takes its name from the short steps pas menus that characterize its choreography The final movement is titled R jouissance meaning rejoicing or celebration The infectious joy of this celebration can be heard in the bouncy syncopation and playful melodic lines that are passed between the different sections in a similar manner to the overture JEAN BABTISTE LULLY LE BOURGEOIS GENTILHOMME LWV 43 Baroque master Jean Baptiste Lully was an Italian born French composer most well known for his dramatic works including ballets and operas Most of his professional life was spent in the service of the court of King Louis XIV He frequently collaborated with Jean Baptiste Poquelin who went by the stage name of Moli re Their most popular collaboration was the com die ballet i e a spoken play with musical and dance interludes titled Le Bourgeois gentilhomme which translates to The
Bourgeois Gentleman or The Middle Class Aristocrat The play is a satire of social climbing that mocks both the middle and upper classes The story follows a foolish and flamboyant merchant named Monsieur Jourdain who dresses and acts in an overly extravagant manner and who attempts to mingle with the nobility only to be mocked and taken advantage of by the same The influence of Lully on Bach s orchestral suites is very clearly heard in the music composed for Le Bourgeois gentilhomme Beginning with a classic French overture slow fast slow the other movements include a variety of French courtly dances gravement a slow dance with two steps to every quarter note sarabande a stately dance with Spanish influence bour e galliarde an athletic leaping dance canarie inspired by indigenous dancing from the Canary Islands characterized by short stamping steps and more JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH MAGNIFICAT BWV 243 The text of the Magnificat come from the Gospel of Luke in which the Virgin Mary offers this prayer in response to the greeting her cousin Elizabeth gave after learning Mary was pregnant with the prophesized Messiah Bach composed his setting of the Magnificat his first major work using a Latin text in 1723 At St Thomas Church in Leipzig liturgical texts were commonly spoken and sung in German However unlike the rest of the Lutheran Church in Germany Latin texts were used at St Thomas on high holy days and feast days regarding Mary which is why all works by Bach using Latin texts were produced after his appointment there The work divides the text of the Magnificat into eleven movements with the Gloria Patri Glory Be to the Father as a final movement In addition to orchestra and five part choir there are solo passages throughout for five vocalists Despite its intended purpose as an element of solemn religious worship Bach strove to incorporate theatrical elements into this work This includes utilizing text painting to further illustrate the meaning of the text For example as the tenor sings He hath put down the mighty from their seat the melodic line forcefully descends musically mirroring the words Bach also utilizes operatic vocal technique to emphasize the text Later as the full chorale sings of God scattering the proud their unified melody splits into separate independent lines
