PROGRAM NOTES AARON COPLAND APPALACHIAN SPRING Known as the Dean of American Composers Aaron Copland 1900 1991 is credited with helping to create a distinctly American voice in the European classical music tradition Many of his compositions from the first half of his career utilizes open harmonies and simple folk like melodies evocative of vast American landscapes and the frontier spirit Copland s vernacular style was very approachable and helped to develop a new generation of audiences for classical music Later in his career he did begin to incorporate 12 tone and serial techniques into his compositions though still with a strong eye toward harmony and melody rather than isolated serialized statements Appalachian Spring was originally titled Ballet for Martha referring to renowned dancer and choreographer Martha Graham She and pianist Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge commissioned Copland to compose this work only specifying that the story should be based on an American theme Composed over the course of two years it premiered on October 30 1944 at the Library of Congress with Graham dancing the lead role The ballet eventually garnered Copland the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music In 1954 conductor Artur Rodzi ski requested Copland to create a full orchestral suite from the original score which featured only 13 players In the final version of this suite Copland omitted about 10 minutes of music from the original ballet where the focus was more on the choreography rather than the score The version you hear this evening is the complete original score to which Graham and her company danced The ballet tells the story of a young couple on their wedding day preparing to embark on their life of pioneering together The joy is at times tempered by the preacher and an older pioneer woman warning the couple that their life will include many terrible hardships Many of these darker sections were included in the 10 minutes of music that is omitted in the more frequently heard orchestral suite However the two are taught that by relying on their love and faith they can rise to the challenge and endure
