PRIORY PRESS SPRING 20244SNOWY ADVENTURES
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 20245On Saturday 10th February we arrived once more at the Wiederkehr Jugendhotel. The Ski team of Mr Loader, Mrs Brundish, Mr Sherringham, Miss Parkins, Mr Larkin and Mrs Meickle and the students were greeted by our returning Club Europe Rep Maria and we quickly settled into our home for the week. On a snowy Sunday morning we met our four fantastic Ski instructors. After introductions all groups were underway. The weather heated up during the week but we were blessed with plenty of snow and it was a great week on the slopes.
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 20246Evening entertainment was a big part of the trip with Sunday being the famous ski trip quiz, swimming at the Wasserwelt on Monday and the sportshall and games night on Tuesday. Wednesday was a particular highlight as we were off to see the Zell am See Ice bears in action (EK Zeller Eisbären) for an all action ice hockey match. Our traditional dress-up day was moved to Tuesday this year to coincide with Carnival in Austria. The Kids TV theme, featuring costumes like Winnie the Pooh, Teletubbies, and C3PO, added to the festive atmosphere. On Thursday students took to the slalom course to try to set the fastest time. The overall winner was Sophie Hunt but it was amazing to see the progress of all of the students throughout the week. This was recognised at the awards ceremony that night where the ski instructors and teachers gave out their awards.Friday marked the nal day of skiing before our journey home. Many thanks to all the students, staff, ski instructors, ski rep and of course our two amazing coach drivers Alice and Jason. We look forward to returning to Wiederkehr again in 2025.Mr Loader

PRIORY PRESS SPRING 20249Skiing was the best part for me, but I enjoyed every second of this trip. We skied every day, swam, played sports, watched hockey, participated in fun quizzes about teachers. In my opinion this was the best school trip I’ve ever had.Mia, Year 11”
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202410GYM & DANCE
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202411Every year we have a theme for the gym and dance show. This year's theme was around the notion of celebrating our individual uniqueness as well as the diversity we have within the Priory School and the wider community. The ags that decorated the hall symbolised a number of the countries represented by students within the school. The main concept behind the theme was for the students to show they are proud of themselves and be comfortable to say “This is me and I am proud of who I am”.With over 85 students performing, some for the rst time and some the nal time. We also had a number of former participants who returned to contribute to the show either through performing or helping backstage. Ama got the show off to a fantastic start by leading the whole cast opening routine to “This Is Me!”. The clapping and cheering started and did not stop until the nal routine. We had routines to a wide variety of music from “Born this Way”, to “Beautiful” to an amazing rendition of ‘Proud’ sung by our amazingly talented year 9 student Elena Scanlon; with Romilly Fountain, Jamie De Vlieg and Chloe De Vlieg performing. Once again, the exceptional quality of the performances showcased the immense talent of our gymnasts and dancers and we are very grateful to the wider community of pupils and parents who attended two sold-out evening performances. On the Thursday afternoon we welcomed over 250 local primary school pupils to see the show and the atmosphere in the hall was buzzing with clapping, cheering and singing along from start to nish. The students’ energy, enthusiasm, and dedication leading up to and during the performances was truly remarkable. What makes the Gym and Dance show so special and unique is the way the pupils all work together, support each other and make “Gym and Dance” friends which last their whole time at the school. Within the school we talk about the “Priory Magic” and it was certainly evident and shared during the shows. Looking forward to next year’s shows already!Mrs HarrisonTHIS IS ME!

PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202414'TIME' 'TIME' FOR SCIENCEFOR SCIENCEThis year the theme for Science Week was 'Time'. Students spent time producing posters and engage in STEM related activities. Each class in year 7 took part, in house teams, to build the highest, self supporting tower with limited resources. Time was taken to observe buildings, to make a plan and then to problem solve as they constructed a tower. Marks were awarded for height, aesthetic appeal and teamwork. There was a positive buzz in the rooms as students worked together to complete the task.Year 8 had a different challenge, constructing a bridge with only paper and limited sellotape to carry a car across a gap. The bridge had to be strong and ideally supported off the ground. The students engaged really positively with the task and there were a range of strategies and solutions. There were also lessons learnt by those who took the time to analyse the weakness in their designs.Mr Ironmonger

PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202416POSTER COMPETITIONYears 7, 8 and 9 have all completed posters as part of Science Week.We were inundated with entries about a huge variety of topics; from Black Holes to Circadian Rhythms; from the origins of the Universe to origins of life on Earth; from Life Cycles to Speedy (or not so speedy) animals and vehicles. The variety, the quality and the creativity were amazing. We had a visit from two STEM ambassadors who took time out of their busy schedules to help judge the posters, alongside some year 10 science students. The debate was erce but in the end decisions were made and our winning entries were selected (based on content, creativity and general appeal). The year 10 students also gained an insight into the work of two scientists with a chance to ask questions about their roles in industry.Mr Ironmonger

PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202418PRIORY STUDENTS LOOK TOWARDS BRIGHT FUTURESYr10 students have the chance to investigate competitive careers at university. As part of our ongoing partnership with Reigate College, we were invited to send some of our high achieving year 10 students to a series of workshops investigating the option to study Medicine, Veterinary medicine or Dentistry (MVD) at university. The workshops were after school on Thursdays for four weeks and delivered by current Reigate students and their teachers. Kieran, Callum, Sophie and Douglas took this opportunity and some of their reections are below.Mr HarrisonWhen I was offered the opportunity to do the MVD course at Reigate college I was thinking to myself, would this really benet me? Compared to some people, I haven’t really considered going into a job based around MVD but I decided that I would participate to see what it was like. I was slightly nervous when going to Reigate as I wasn’t sure what to expect but as soon as I walked into the classroom, the nervous energy disappeared. In the opening session (1 of 4) we were told about how the sessions were going to run and I was excited for the upcoming weeks. My favourite session was the dissection of a chicken wing. When I eat chicken wings, I never think about what it is made up of, so that was really interesting to see. The staff at Reigate college were informative and inspirational which made the sessions even more enjoyable. After doing the course at Reigate college, it has made me consider further taking an A-level in one of the sciences and I would recommend any other Priory students who get the chance to do the MVD course to participate as it will really open up your pathways for the future.Kieran, Year 10At rst, I considered not attending, since I had no desire to become a medic, veterinarian or dentist; however, since I had no other career choices I decided to go and broaden my horizons. As soon as the lecturer began, I realised that this was not just a workshop for MVD, but a guide for college, university and eventual jobs. Even though I did not wish to pursue a career in those elds, the advice still applies to whatever I wish to become. Some of this advice featured personal skill recognition and development, the path after the end of schooling and having a competitive attitude. Despite all of this inclusivity, the Workshop was still, of course, medical based, and featured many interesting activities. Some of the activities included dissection of a chicken wing, analysis of skulls and study of government health campaigns. In summary, the MVD Course was an enjoyable and insightful experience and I would do it again if I could. Douglas, Year 10”

PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202421To celebrate World Book Day, Mrs Sterling presented two Year 7 students, Poppy and William with the prestigious Priory Bronze Canon for their exceptional reading achievements at assembly. The canon is a set of recommended books which is viewed as best literature. They earned the award for reading a fantastic mix of 6 books, both ction and science and sharing their insights through book reviews.During the assembly, Poppy and William talked to Year 7 about the books they most enjoyed. Poppy's standout was 'Millions' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, for its exploration of the impact of money on families and the reminder that money doesn't buy happiness. William's favourite was 'What If?' by Randall Munroe, a book with serious scientic answers to absurd hypothetical questions. He loved learning about interplanetary cessnas, LEGO bridges and insights from Apollo 11 pilot Mike Collins on beating loneliness. All Year 7s received World Book book tokens and Mrs Sterling recommended some fantastic reads, including the space-themed 'Can You Get Jellysh in Space?' by Dr. Sheila Kanani, which talks about all the animals we have taken to space and the reasons behind it.Poppy's list of reads to earn the award:• War Horse by Michael Morpurgo • Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson• Oranges in No Man's Land by Elizabeth Laird• The Story of Dr Dolittle by Hugh Lofting• Once by Morris Gleitzman• Millions by Frank Cottrell-BoyceWORLD BOOK DAY
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202422CHAPLAINCY WELCOMES ANDY POOLE AND BISHOP PAUL DAVIES There have been some brilliant developments in the work of the chaplaincy this term, particularly with the start of Andy Poole as our school’s Christian youth worker and with the visit of the new Bishop of Dorking. The beginning of January saw Andy Poole joining the chaplaincy team at Priory as our new school Christian youth worker. Andy has already developed some brilliant new initiatives in school including open mic sessions in the chapel; faith based multi-sports in the dome on a Thursday after school; and lunch time football. As part of Andy’s welcome, we were privileged to have a visit from the new Bishop of Dorking, Rt Revd Paul Davies. Bishop Paul took time to nd out about the work of chaplaincy as well as having a tour of the school. He was really impressed with all the incredible teaching and learning that was so evident in our school. Bishop Paul said:This term has also seen a real growth in our Christian Union and we are regularly welcoming 40-45 students into the chapel on a Friday lunch-time to have fun, enjoy hot chocolate and hear something about what it means to be a follower of Jesus. After Easter we’re going to be starting an upper school Christian Union on a Tuesday lunch time because of the large number of students attending. Finally, this past week we’ve been hosting an Olympic themed prayer space in the chapel which has seen students reect on ambition, worry/stress, grief & loss and purpose as well as a number of other signicant areas of life.Rev’d StevensThe Priory CofE school is a fantastic place in which young people can grow and ourish as members of the Dorking community. It is wonderful to see a distinctively Christian school helping such a diverse range of young people grow up as life-long learners who want to positively contribute to our society.
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202423Thanks to the generous support of the Surrey Climate change initiative for decarbonisation projects, we’ve been gifted with a beautiful mini forest, nestled by the Dome.Over the next 3-5 years, this mini forest will develop into a thriving ecosystem, providing a sanctuary for wildlife and contributing to improved air quality in our surroundings. This project aligns with our school’s commitment to a greener environment. In 2019 Surrey County Council has declared a climate emergency and developed a Climate Change Strategy, aiming for a net zero carbon target for the county by 2050, in line with the national target. Trees play an important role in sequestering carbon dioxide, which is the most prevalent greenhouse gas in the United Kingdom. Trees also contribute to climate adaptation, biodiversity enhancement, and improved health and wellbeing.Mrs BrowneOUR NEW MINI FOREST

Priced at £1 each, the roses, complete with a personalised message, were a big hit with students. Well done Year 11!On the 18th March, Year 10 students hosted a cake sale in support of Comic Relief, selling their delicious home made creations. The cakes sold out quickly and the students raised over £60. Well done Year 10!
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202426A special mention to the families of year 10 girls Sophie Hunt and Millie Ransome who have generously donated funds, enabling the Year 10 team to have their own set of netball dresses and bibs. Both myself and the year 10 team are immensely grateful for their extremely kind and generous donation. Mrs HarrisonA FABULOUS NETBALL SEASON!SPORTThank you! This year we have been running an after school and a lunchtime Netball Club that welcomes students from all age groups. At the lunch time club we regularly get 20 plus students attending from all age groups and genders. This session is predominantly playing matches where students learn the rules and play different positions. The session has been run by year 10 GCSE PE student Jemimah Taylor, who takes the register, organises the teams and helps the younger students learn the roles of each position. Jemimah is an exceptional role model to all the students and she has demonstrated excellent leadership skills. The after school Netball Club is also very well attended by all year groups. At this session we have been working on skills and tactics as well as playing matches. The year 10 team leads the whole group through a rigorous warm up before the session can begin. I am always impressed and proud with how the girls work and support each other during these sessions as well as having fun.All age groups have played a number of matches and below are just a couple of match reports from this season.Mrs Harrison

PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202428Year 10 vs Box HillOur rst year 10 match back after Christmas was against Box Hill School. It started off really well and by the end of the rst quarter we were drawing with them. However, in the next quarter they upped their game and we struggled to keep going. Despite being tired, we kept going and we didn’t go down without a ght. Although we didn’t win, we had a great time and identied areas of improvement. The Box Hill team picked Sophie Hunt as the player of the match which was well deserved. We thank Box Hill for playing against us and giving us a match opportunity.Written by Jemimah Taylor 10B1Year 7 vs Box HillThe Priory year 7 team displayed excellent teamwork. At the beginning of the match, we struggled to keep possession of the ball, I think this could have been down to nerves. However, as the game progressed our condence grew. We managed to gain more possession of the ball which allowed us to catch up. The nal score was a close 15-11 victory to Box Hill. Box Hill voted Megan Musgrove as the most valuable player.Written By Evie Woolston-James, 7A2
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202429Y10 LEAD SURREY PANATHLON EVENTOn the 28th of February, a group of students from Year 10 including myself helped out at a Surrey Penathlon event for primary school children ranging from year 4 to year 6.The event ran through the morning and gave the children the chance to play a large variety of games. Many of these children don’t normally get the chance to go out of school to participate in sport events so the Panathlon event was just for them. With the help of the Surrey Panathlon team, we worked in pairs to run 7 different games which the children participated in. Many of the games required the children to work as a team and it was amazing to see the different methods they came up with. From games including shooting a ball into a hoop to bowling over pins, the children had a lot of fun and always had a smile on their face. We honestly had as much fun as they did and it was a great morning volunteering. As many of the schools were local, we were able to see students who had previously gone to our primary schools which was good to see. Overall, the event was very fun and we would all happily volunteer if we get the chance to do it again. Kieran Brennand, 10A1
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202430Year 7 Triumph in a Resounding victory3 - 0 victory in the recent year 7 football match verses Christ’s College, Guildford. Notable mentions to Oli Smith for a cleansheet, Francis S and Ollie G with strong mideld performances. However Man of the Match was Max Urie for and outstanding centre back performance. Well done boys!Mr DunnPriory vs Christ’s CollegeThe Priory football team clashed with St Bede’s in a thrilling match that kept the spectators on the edge of their metaphorical seats. Both teams showed incredible determination and skill throughout the game. From the kickoff, it was a close contest with chances being carved out by both sides, but defensives on top for much of the contest. Goals began to ow later in the contest for Priory and this led to an assured mideld and defensive performance into the later parts of the second half.Player of the match on this occasion was a difcult decision to be made by Mr Dunn. He elected for Olly Matcham. Olly put in a tireless effort in mideld along side Jack and Fin and even fell into centre back for the remaining minutes to ensure a composed nish to the game. Though many candidates stood out for recognition Olly pipped them on this occasion. Mr DunnPriory vs St Bede’sY10 ght for hard earned victory FOOTBALL
PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202431Priory vs Christ’s College Priory vs St Bede’sY9 Boys played out a well fought defensive contest against Christ’s College. Priory grew into the game after a tricky start. The boys showed a lot of resilience to continue efforts throughout the game. Many players operating in a number of positions, to best help the team. We continued to grow into the contest as the game went on, ultimately ending in defeat but many lessons learned. Our player of the match on this occasion was Charlie McGinnis- Ralph. Charlie was the days captain and epitomised what we want to see in school football which is passion, will to win and a never say die spirit - well done!Mr DunnY9 show resilience Y8 in narrow defeat Year 8 Boys played out an enthralling contest against St Bede’s. This was often an end to end game with chances for both sides. Priory grew under pressure at points within the game, however the second half was a much more assured performance with good defensive displays by the backline and goalkeeper. This became more and more ably supported by mideld, leading to a very good second half performance. Our player of the match on this occasion was Will Duffell. Will put in a captains performance in an effort ending in defeat. Will lead by example as well as vocally to lead his team. He was tireless in mideld, supporting both defence and attack. PRIORY PRESS SPRING 202432Jemimah has recently completed The FA Referees course. Before completing the face to face elements of the course she completed a number of modules online regarding safeguarding and the Laws of the games. The face to face elements took place on Friday evening and all day on Sunday and included Jemimah having to learn and demonstrate the signals and elements of communication needed to be an effective ofcial. She has successfully passed all of these elements of the course and now needs to referee 5 matches to fully qualify as a referee.Jemimah had been considering doing a referee’s course last summer and was fortunate to meet with Premiership Assistant Referee and ex Priory student Dan Robathan, when he visited and delivered fabulous informative and inspirational sessions. Jemimah discussed the course with Dan, who told her all about it and also explained how refereeing can realistically be someone's career. On returning to school from the course, Jemimah told me that it was her conversation with Dan that gave her the inspiration to enrol on the course as she had not ever thought it would be possible to have a career in refereeing. She explained how one of the course leaders told her “you have the condence and ability to go far as a referee!” Thank you to Dan Robathan for “giving back” to the school and inspiring Jemimah. Huge congratulations Jemimah, we are all super proud of you, your focus, your motivation and we wish you all the best on your refereeing journey.Mrs HarrisonJemimah, Y10 Inspired by Former Priory Student and Premiership Assistant Referee, Dan RobathanINSIPRATION!
