For me, since before I can remember, I have had a visual companion to that voice. Animated by seeing both the common and the rare. Stone formations in a Native American nature preserve, craft modeled hundreds of years ago in Africa, phrases or words from that which I read or hear others say or sing. These internal projections, sometimes immediate, often when I am separated in time and place. A flood of images, fragments, seldom whole, as multiple showings of direction To be initially made, in the outside, by sketches and models. My process of creation is the entry to the depths of my voice. A place of my own where exploration becomes that which manifests itself by strong motivation and energy to the realization of my sculpture with the power of focus. In this exhibition you will see the realization of these new directions, along with some of my works from the past. Michael Weinstein is a nationally recognized sculptor. He has held solo shows at galleries and gained commission for his work throughout the country. He has the pleasure of holding this exhibition with Fogue Gallery, in recognition of its unique role both showing the work of older artists while also providing studios for them to create.
PREVISIONBeginning, with using Fiberglas, fashioned in the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan and a small studio space. Then during my stay in Israel, supported by a local businessman, given access to his factory outside of Tel Aviv, being shown how to weld and use metal. Showing these at my first exhibition in Tel Aviv.Returning to America, building small models of works to weave together wood and steel. Traveling across the country to our new home in Eugene Oregon, continuing to explore integrating metals and various types of wood.MAY 11TH - JULY 7TH2024SovereignThen to Vashon Island, where I constructed a studio building, with a crane installed so I could lift metal sheets, to begin creating larger outdoor sculptures. My first exhibition would then be arranged in Seattle, introducing these larger outdoor metal works. Introductions would open my door to Texas. In preparation, I began to work in free standing works, and wall sculptures in black painted metal to show in three simultaneous Houston exhibitions. Followed by solo shows in Dallas, Philadelphia, Seattle and Portland. Multiple commissions awarded, which provided the window to explore large steel outdoor work.I have not been on a journey, for that implies a destination. Rather mine is a continuous on-going exploration.New directions arising from integrating wood textured and hand painted with steel shown in his Oakland and then San Francisco Galleries and then in Seattle. An unplanned visit with a craftsperson, working in leather, led to my incorporation of leather with steel and the use of “exotic” woods from Africa and South America. I have also been interested how my sculpture could be experienced beyond just viewing. Through the skill of a 3D rendering expert, these models I prepared are brought to reality, showing materials, colors and just as importantly, people and the surrounding environment interacting with the work.Defender of the WayThe VoiceGuidance Provider
