Message from the ESDAC ChairDear Fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors & Friends:Time is just flying by and there are only five months left in thisRotary Year. A lot has been accomplished but these is still so muchmore to be done. At the beginning of the this year, Governor Gobbiissued a challenge to all of the Clubs in the District. Every Club canbe recognized for their environmental efforts. There are threedistinct levels in order to receive the Governor’s Citation (Bronze,Silver and Gold Citations). The Club that completes the MOSTenvironmental activates will be awarded the GOVERNOR’SENVIRONMENTAL AWARD. Details to achieve these citations andaward are on the next two pages. In January, I had the privilege and honor of visiting the Rotary Clubof Weston to present them the Governor’s Environmental Award. TheWeston Club has an active environmental committee and theiraccomplishments are visible in the local community. The secret to achieving an environmental citation and/or award, orany recognition, lies in the need to have a CHAMPION. Championscarry the “banner”, champions lead the way, champions motivateothers. During my visit at the Rotary Club of Weston, I also awardedMargarita Lartitegui with a recognition plaque as an ENVIROMENTALCHAMPION.I want to encourage every Club to have an environmental champion. Please ensure that you have an Environmental Chair to lead youractivities and to attend our ESDAC meetings. Thanks for your support and I look forward to hearing from you.Robert H. ESDAC VISIT TO THE HIALEAH MIAMI SPRINGS ROTARY CLUBOn Thursday, January 24th, I had the honor of visiting the Hialeah-Miami Springs Rotary Club. They meet at the Miami Springs Golf and Country Club. This Club truly understands the Rotary spirit and they follow the Four-Way Test, and Fifth item of the Four-Way Test: Is it Fun? It sure was fun. They are active and have great fundraisers, like Golf tournaments and this week they are having their Annual Texas Poker Tournament.I think that what surprised them the most from my presentation was to learn that we breath-in or eat the equivalent in weight of a plastic credit card per week. I thank them for their hospitality. If you would like me to make a presentation at your Club, let me know.16
• Our District (6990) entered into an agreement with TREEKLY (not-for-profit entity). Treekly will plant trees on your behalf based on the number of steps you take on a daily basis. There is NO COST to sign up and earn trees. • The following two pages show how to sign up. We will be issuing a more detailed virtual brochure in a few days, for those who are more technically challenged, as myself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------INFORMATION HAVE MANGROVE FORESTS• Mangrove forests capture tremendous amount of carbondioxide. They are a carbon sink. • Mangroves also help reduce shore erosion and can help absorb storm surge impact.• Their root system help bind and build soils, and their root filter nitrates, phosphates and other pollutants in the water improving water quality flowing from rivers, canals into the oceans/bays.• Mangrove forests provide habitat and refuge for birds, fish, invertebrates, mammals and plants.Plant Mangrove Trees By Just Walking 17
