Message from District Governor Barbara GobbiDear Fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors & Friends:November 15this America Recycling Day, but we can recycle any and every day of the year. I encourage our Clubs to consider the three R’s. Recycle, Reuse and Reduce in our meetings and daily lives. We should stop using single use plastic utensils when serving food; recycle plastic and glass containers, and reduce wasted food. In our Monthly Environmental Action plan on page 13, we suggest to recycle, reuse and even donate items, such as clothing.I hope that everyone will step up and consider the three R’s.I look forward to seeing our progress. Barbara GobbiDistrict Governor – Rotary Int’l District 6990Dear Environmentally Concerned Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors & Friends:This bulletin will review some recent activities but is more focused on our future plans. Our District has partnered with Treekly, an international entity that will plant trees on your behalf just for walking. You gain with better health and the planet benefits with more trees. In regard to trees, we will have a tree planting project on Jan. 27thand we hope that Clubs will participate. In November, we will have a screening of an edit of a new feature film, COMMON GROUND. This film addresses the issue of the degradation of our soils, and proposes instead that farmers use Regenerative Agriculture instead of Industrial Agriculture. I want to re-enforce Gov. Gobbi’s comments about recycling. It’s so easy. Please look at page 6 and see what our Trashercise King is doing. You, too, can do it.I look forward to hearing from you. Feedback is essential for us to improve.Robert H. Bull ESDAC Chair=============================================================3
“Water: Sustaining Bird Life” a call of attention to the importance of water and its associated habitats to migratory birds. Unfortunately, increasing human demand for water, as well as human-driven pollution and climate change, threaten many of the water areas on which migratory birds depend.FALL WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY WAS ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14thDID YOU OR YOUR CLUB PARTICIPATE?https://shorturl.at/rCDUVTropical Audubon Society supports the Cape Florida Banding Station at Bill Baggs Park. Migrating birds are caught is specially designed nets. They are then identified and “banded”. Afterwards they are released and possibly “caught” again in another net as they migrate. This is part of a research program on migratory birds. If you or your Club would like to help and “Adopt-A-Net” please click here: 4
Our mistake, we forgot to include the Rotary Club of Ft. Lauderdale last month. Sorry.5
TRASHERCISEOur Trashercise (Picking up trash while exercising/walking) King, Hugo Montaudon, continues his efforts to keep his neighborhood tidy. Everyone should join in and Trashercise in their neighborhood. You would be surprised at what you might find!6
The Rotary Club of Weston Environmental Committee Visited Waste ManagementOn October 4ththe Rotary Club of Weston - Environmental Committee Team visited the Waste Management Recycling Facility in Pembroke Park. Waste Management is the largest Environmental Service provider in the US - and this Site provides services for Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier and Monroe counties. They learned more about top recycling priorities - Recycle only #1 & #2 plastics / aluminum, cardboard / paper and glass. Please do not place your recycling items in plastic bags! It damages the equipment! 7
TREE PLANTING EVENT JAN 27thOn Jan. 27th we will hold a tree planting event at the North Pointe Community Center (7351 NW 186thSt., North of Hialeah, FL 33015). In November (date TBD), we will have a screening of an edited version of COMMON GROUND. A full feature film that addresses one of the key issues of our survival as a species. Conserving agricultural soil is imperative but our current practices are destroying our soil. The effort behind this program is a joint effort by ESRAG, a Rotary Action Group, and Common Ground. The goal is to have Rotary Clubs worldwide to work with ten framers to adopt improved soil carbon-health through regenerative farming. Thereby reducing the farmer’s costs, while improving our soils with greater production. Here is a trailer of this film.ESRAG.ORG – EVENTS Don’t miss this event, there is much to be learntYou will be able to share this recording with your Club.SCREENING (EDITED VERSION) OF COMMON GROUND9
• Walking boosts your health• While walking you can help the planet by picking up trash. We call it TRASHERCISE (TRASH + EXERCISE)• Tracking your steps you could have trees planted.• Our District (6990) is in conversations with TREEKLY (not-for-profit entity) that will have mangrove trees planted on your behalf.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------• Mangrove forests capture tremendous amount of carbondioxide. They are a carbon sink. • Mangroves also help reduce shore erosion and can help absorb storm surge impact.• Their root system help bind and build soils, and their root filter nitrates, phosphates and other pollutants in the water improving water quality flowing from rivers, canals into the oceans/bays.• Mangrove forests provide habitat and refuge for birds, fish, invertebrates, mammals and plants.Imagine Having Mangrove Trees PlantedBy Just Taking A Walk 10
