8 JULY PML NEWSADMINISTRATIONGENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGEJOE POWELL – PCAM, CCAM-LS, CMCA, AMS GENERAL MANAGERPG&E POWERLINE UNDERGROUNDING PROJECT UPDATEPG&E continues their powerline undergrounding project down Pine Mountain Drive. They will be temporarily suspending work during the Independence Day Holiday weekend. We have had a few issues with the contractor hired by PG&E such as working later than the agreed upon timeframe and delaying trac by 30 minutes. PG&E stated that the longer trac delays were the result of the contractor inadvertently trenching into GCSD water lines that were not properly marked on the original as-built plans. Given that the system is over 50 years old, the plans and documents that indicate location of water and sewer lines are not always accurate. We experienced additional challenges due to the lack of communication between two PG&E project divisions. e division responsible for replacing power poles failed to coordinate with the division that is working on the powerline undergrounding project. As a result, there was a time when both lanes of trac on Pine Mountain Drive were blocked for a period of time. We discussed this issue with our PG&E contact and anticipate that they will coordinate their tasks more eectively in the future. Some members have commented on the rough asphalt patch work that the PG&E contractor left over the trenched areas of the PML roadways. Once this portion of the project is completed for this year, they plan on coming in and smoothing these areas out. After PG&E completes the remaining undergrounding work in 2026, they will put the PML roadways back in the same or better condition as when they started. From a member communication standpoint, we put out the weekly project work schedule through our PML eSNAP direct email program and post on the official PML Website as soon as we receive this information from PG&E. We encourage all members to sign up for our email communication platform so that they can stay informed regarding this project and other important Association information.PML ROADS REFURBISHMENT PROJECTOur roads refurbishment project was originally scheduled to start in May. We decided to reschedule it for September. While the roads project areas are not in the same locations as the PG&E undergrounding project, the potential impact of many large trucks and equipment in PML would undoubtedly have a negative impact on the membership. e road line striping work will be completed after they nish the roads refurbishment project.UNAUTHORIZED PARKING AT THE PML ADMINISTRATION OFFICEWe continue to see more and more short-term renters and guests, leaving multiple cars in the PML Administration parking lot all day and car-pooling to the lake. ere is already limited space now for members to park at Admin to take care of their business. is has had an impact on our members, committees and others just trying to conduct business at the Admin Oce. As a result, we are ramping up our monitoring and have been issuing parking tickets. If the trend continues, we may be forced to update our policies to include increasing the parking ne. We will be sending out notices to all short-term rental owners to make sure that they notify their tenants about unauthorized parking so that the owner does not become subject to nes as well for the behavior and violations by their tenants. RECREATION AND SEASONAL OPERATIONS Our recreation team has been focused on final preparations for our annual Independence Day Celebration and reworks event. We have also received multiple phone calls from members expressing appreciation for the sta presence on the beaches and the enforcement of the launch protocols. Another member who skis regularly shared how pleased they were to see an increased boat patrol presence, noting a noticeable dierence on the water. We are stang Dunn Court and the Lake Lodge beaches to ensure that no watercraft are launched without the authorized registration stickers and invasive species inspections. Over Memorial weekend, our sta inspected dozens of watercrafts and found that many had not registered their watercraft and many renters and guests who were not authorized to register or use their unauthorized watercraft on our lake. At the main Marina, 68 kayaks were inspected (20 without registration stickers); 30 Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) (15 without stickers) At Dunn Court they inspected and found 48 kayaks (2 without stickers); 32 SUPs (5 without stickers). At the Lake Lodge, they inspected and found 61 kayaks (13 without stickers); 49 SUPs (20 without stickers).Watercraft without registration were not allowed to launch and were directed to the Marina Store to register or rent a kayak or SUP. We saw a signicant increase in watercraft registrations compared to previous Memorial Day weekends due to the additional sta monitoring in areas that were not staed in the past. is resulted in an additional $8,200 in watercraft registration fees for the Marina operation. Opening day at the Swim Center, we saw a line of folks waiting to get in for our early morning aqua aerobics program. We are starting o the season with 3 certied Swim Instructors, allowing for more sessions, both groups and private lessons. We are oering 11 sessions until August 11th.LAKE DREDGING PROJECTe last time that Pine Mountain Lake was dredged was in 2010/2011. e project was a huge undertaking that started in 2005 and nalized in 2011. It cost several million dollars and required significant environmental review and studies. Fast forward to today and while our Maintenance team does a great job of maintaining our lake and surrounding areas, the amount of sediment ow into our lake coves and shorelines has increased over time. As a result, the board directed management to solicit proposals from qualied consultants for the planning, design and permitting for the rst phase of the Lake Dredging Project. Once we receive these proposals, we will evaluate them and present them to the Board with a recommendation for approval. We are also working with our professional lake
JULY PML NEWS 9ADMINISTRATIONPRESIDENT'SMESSAGEMIKE GUSTAFSON – PMLA BOARD PRESIDENTAs we are in PML’s “High Season” this message will be a potpourri of topics.e 2025 Board of Directors Election has had an interesting turn of events! ere are two positions open this cycle and only two people submitted their election paperwork: Dania Schaffer and myself. This is only the third time in the past 20 years where a full election process was not required. The two candidates will be approved by the current board “by acclimation” at the August Membership meeting. is means the Association does not have to spend about $20,000 to support a full election. I hope it also means most people are happy with our current direction.Every three years the Association tasks the Long Range Planning Committee with creating and running a Membership Satisfaction Survey. e 2025 survey will go live on July 1 and will run for 90 days. It is very important that you ll out a copy of the survey as the results will help drive the planning by the board and management for the next three years. e link to the online survey is here--------------.One of our critical long range projects is dredging of the lake. e last time we dredged the lake was in 2011; unfortunately sediment ows in every winter. We will be selecting consultants to help with the how and the where and, most importantly, the need for permits from various governing agencies. It’s a big job, but it has to be done periodically. e 2011 dredging cost about $2.0 million and took three years of planning and permitting. We estimate that this time it could cost $4 to $6 million. More on this project as we collect information.A special event during our July 4 weekend is the Boat Parade! On July 5th at 6:00pm, there is a cruise around the lake for all the decorated boats. The theme this year is “Under the Sea.” Judges will select the best decorations in each category. Sign up at the Marina Office prior to 12:00pm on July 5th. is event is organized by Friends of the Lake. After the Boat Parade, at around 9:15pm, we will have our wonderful reworks display. If you plan to watch from the Marina remember, wristbands are required for entry the whole day. ere will be extra security to keep everyone safe and PGE promises to complete their work before our big weekend. e Waterski Club is oering free waterski lessons for kids at 8:00am on Friday, July 11. See www.pinemountainlakewaterskiclub.com for information and registration. Friends of the Lake are also sponsoring their yearly Lake Swim event at 3:00pm on July 12. If you have ever wanted to legally swim from Dunn Court Beach to the Marina Beach, this is your chance. Please arrive at Dunn Court at 2:45 to sign up. e fastest swimmers usually finish in about seven minutes, but lots of people swim just for fun and a personal challenge. No children under ten please. We are well into re season, so please be careful and keep your lot cleared. Enjoy our summer weather, get an ice cream at the Lakeside Café or a margarita at the Grill, and always be Fire Safe!management consultant to determine the best way to address coves by priority while spreading out the work and costs so that the entire project can be funded out of our reserves over time.Given the complexity and cost of the dredging project, we are performing our due diligence on behalf of the board and membership and this takes time and we want members to know that we are doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Once we have information or proposals that require board action, we will bring it forward to an open board meeting for consideration.PERSONAL FIREWORKS ARE PROHIBITEDPersonal reworks are illegal to possess and use in Tuolumne County. Violators can be subject to signicant nes and in some cases, jail time. PMLA uses a licensed professional pyrotechnic vendor and we have permits and work with our local re services in order to conduct our annual reworks display. Even so, every year we get a few folks that launch their own reworks in our community. We are in an extreme wildre risk area and we work directly with Cal Fire and law enforcement to identify those that put our community at risk. For those members who rent out their homes or allow family members and guests to use them, please remind them that all personal fireworks, including fireworks launched on the lake from personal watercraft, are prohibited and violators will be prosecuted.PML ADVISORY COMMITTEE OPENINGSWe currently have openings on two committees, specifically, the Covenants Committee Environmental Control Committee and Equine Advisory Committee. Members can apply online by going to the PML Website. We also have a PDF version of the form that you can ll out that is on the website. ese are all voluntary position and a great way for members to get involved in the governance of our community.Until next month, wishing everyone a fun and safe Independence Day Holiday!

JULY PML NEWS 11ADMINISTRATIONPMLA MONEY MATTER$DAN SZATHMARY, ASSOCIATION CONTROLLERA STRONG START TO SUMMER AND A PROMISING OUTLOOK FOR 2025We’ve made it through the rst half of the year, and summer is in full swing. As part of our 2024 financial plan, we set ambitious sales targets, not just for the sake of hitting numbers, but to strengthen the foundation that supports everything we do here at Pine Mountain Lake. Our goal? To bring in additional revenue from outside the Association, particularly from our visitors, in a way that allows us to maintain and improve our amenities, roads, and infrastructure while easing the nancial burden on members. With rising costs across nearly every category, this strategy is more important than ever.Rather than passing the full impact of 10–30% cost increases directly onto our members, we’ve focused on growing revenue from sources that already bring signicant value to our community. By enhancing the visitor experience and encouraging greater participation in our amenities and oerings, we’ve created an opportunity: guests leave with great memories, and their support helps keep member assessments comparatively lower.Of course, any strategic shift carries some level of risk. We knew we couldn’t predict exact spending patterns, but we could focus on creating positive experiences and delivering exceptional value. Along the way, we’ve closely monitored sales and expenses, prepared to make adjustments if needed.e great news? We haven’t had to pivot. After a full month of peak season activity, we’re seeing record-breaking sales across the board. is is a tremendous achievement, and it’s a direct result of the dedication, creativity, and hard work of the PMLA managers and employees who have brought this vision to life.ese teams are not only meeting our challenging sales goal, they’re exceeding them. And that success is the key to keeping assessment increases lower than ination and preserving the high standards of service and maintenance that make Pine Mountain Lake such a special place.Looking ahead, 2025 is already shaping up to be a strong year. We’re excited about what’s to come and deeply grateful to everyone, members, visitors, and sta, who make this community thrive. As always, we welcome your thoughts and questions. You walk outside and it feels like as if you are standing on the sun. Personally, I nd that July is the leader in the clubhouse for extreme heat of the summer months. Here is some solid advice for everyone to have a safe and happy summertime.• Water: Keep a water bottle with you and drink regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty. Try and refrain from sugary and caeinated drinks. ese may quench your thirst, but they will also just dehydrate you.• Dress Appropriately: Wear light-colored, loose-tting clothing. Light colors reect heat, and loose colors allow sweat to evaporate. It is also wise to use sun protective clothing. Wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses will protect your face and eyes from the sun.• Stay Cool Indoors: Use fans and/or air conditioning in your living space to keep everyone and everything cool. Closing curtains and blinds will also help block out the sun and keep your home cooler.• Eat Light and Fresh: Choosing cooling foods like salads, fruits and vegetables are not only healthy but also very hydrating. Eating heavy during hot weather usually doesn’t mix well with high temperatures. Personally, ice cream is totally acceptable for dinner during the summertime.• Sunscreen: Ensure your sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB. SPF 30 or higher and opt out for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. If you will be swimming or sweating, choose a water-resistant sunscreen.Wishing you a summer lled with endless laughter, ice cream cones, and adventures that make your heart skip a beat. Give me a call or send me an email with any questions or concerns because I am happy to help you nd a solution. JULY PML NEWS 15
16 JULY PML NEWSADMINISTRATIONBASS PONDBASS PONDTHE ASSOCIATION’S OTHER WATERTHE ASSOCIATION’S OTHER WATERSTEPHEN McCORD – PMLA LAKE MANAGEROn the far side of the airport, near the equestrian center, lies little ol’ Bass Pond. It really is small and unassuming at about 2 acres in surface area when full (Pine Mountain Lake is 200 acres) and 10 feet deep (Pine Mountain Lake is over 90 feet). It’s older than the association, and the pond is easy to miss—o Clements Road behind some homes and down a gated gravel path. But alas, it’s an amenity anyway, with scenic views and some sh to catch. Horseback riders occasionally venture out from the equestrian to walk around it.e pond also provides some benets like flood control, water treatment, groundwater recharge and wildlife habitat. But maintaining the pond is a challenge—it has no freshwater inows most of the time; it is sheltered from benecial wind mixing; runo from the watershed deposits excess sediments and nutrients, invasive plants and animals can dominate the ecology, and there are no controls for adding or releasing water. Mats of algae (not cyanobacteria) on Bass Pond in spring 2025.DAM IT!Although the association has a right to stock water in the pond, the dam is below the threshold for any regulatory oversight, so it wasn’t maintained for many years. The large trees on the dam provide stability while living but could seriously compromise the dam’s integrity whenever one dies or falls. At this stage, the trees cannot be safely removed. The only viable maintenance is to support their health by trimming dead branches and protecting the area from wildfire. The other risk to the dam structure itself is the sewer line running under the spillway and across the length of it.Even if the dam failed, the fairly small volume of water and sediment it retains would not likely cause substantial damage. The spillway was lowered by one foot in summer 2023 to prevent flooding of a storm drain just upstream of the pond. Consequently, when the rainy season ends in spring, the lake level starts the dry season one foot lower than previously. Water flowing over the spillway enters an unnamed channel, which heads west about 1,000 feet through a culvert under Yorkshire Road before discharging into Big Humbug Creek. Big Humbug flows northward and discharges into the Tuolumne River, not into Pine Mountain Lake. MY, AREN’T YOU PRODUCTIVENutrients accumulate in the pond sediments delivered by inflows, dead algae, migratory waterfowl (our favorite Canada geese) poop, and decaying plant material. Over time, the sediment bed has become a more significant source of soluble nutrients that leads to more plants and algae growing over time. Your new term for the day is “cultural eutrophication”, which means an increase in ecosystem productivity due to human activity. When the pond water is relatively clear, sunlight penetrates to the pond bottom. With those conditions, rooted aquatic plants (mostly Eurasian watermilfoil,
JULY PML NEWS 17Bass Pond’s dam crest showing trees growing in it and the community sewer line access port in the foreground.Bass Pond in spring 2023 prior to removal of shoreline cattails.giving you another term to impress your friends) grow throughout the bottom surface. Most years begin with a dirty but open water surface, a mat of algae in spring, and rooted plants growing up all around the pond’s shallow perimeter by late summer. In 2023 the association removed massive amounts of invasive, non-native cattails from the shoreline, which will grow back over a few years. Until then, algae will likely “bloom” at times. Something will always find a way to eat at the pond buffet.Fish are not stocked in the pond. Nonetheless, some sportfish are present due to prior stocking or illegal release and have since reproduced naturally: bass (likely largemouth), bluegill (and/or crappie and sunfish) and minnows (species unknown). The latest fish tale I heard from a local resident was that a kid caught an eight-pound bass this spring.DOES IT LOOK BLUISH-GREEN TO YOU?There’s a certain type of bacteria called cyanobacteria. They tend to have a blue-green color and act like algae, so they were first called blue-green algae. Your factoid of the day is that cyanobacteria were likely the first multicellular organism on the planet, producing oxygen via photosynthesis. Some species sometimes produce toxins, which can cause all sorts of problems—occasionally even killing animals drinking toxin-laden water. In August 2024, a single sample of pond surface water from the south shoreline was analyzed for cyanotoxin analysis was reported to detect anatoxin-a and saxitoxin. Both results were close to the reporting limit, but nonetheless it triggered a “caution” level. Follow-up sampling in fall again had detectible concentrations of both toxins. Samples collected this May were back to normal. The association will continue to test pond water and post warnings as needed.[Stephen McCord is the Association’s Lake Manager. 26 JULY PML NEWSI feel lucky to live in PML. e wonderful people, beautiful mountains, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of tranquility it all brings make me glad I chose to move here. I spent the rst 27 years of my professional life as a federal civil service employee in administrative and managerial positions throughout California. Switching from the Federal to County government in 2000, I spent the next 18 years as a Senior Analyst in the Santa Clara County Health and Hospital System, directing and managing County-wide patient-focused projects. I retired in 2018 and happily moved to PML in 2019.I am a U.S. Army veteran and former Coast Guard reservist. I hold both an undergraduate and graduate degree in public administration. is training was instrumental in my development of public policy initiatives and budgeting strategies to support long-I’ve been asked to serve on the PML board again and am happy to do so because I believe it’s important to have thoughtful, rational, unbiased, non-radical representatives who will work productively with PML sta. When I previously served on the Board, I gained valuable experience about what works and what doesn’t, the laws around Homeowners’ Associations, the budget process, and PML’s challenges and priorities. I believe that I can make a positive contribution to our great community and ensure sound, responsible management. PML is a beautiful place with several dierent constituencies – full time residents, part-time vacationers, and rental property owners. It’s important that the Board balance everyone’s needs and interests. We must maintain and improve our aging amenities; after all, that’s why we all bought here. Allowing amenities to deteriorate will reduce our home values. During my time on the Board, we have term County planning objectives. I currently serve our community through volunteer work with Southside Community Connections and the Humane Society in Jamestown. Currently, I chair the PML Environmental Control Committee (ECC) which oversees PML Rules, Guidelines and Construction Standards. Last year, I was also a member of the Short-Term Rental (STR) Committee, which developed our current STR policies. At present, I am a board member of the PML Lady Niners and a regular member of the PML Residents Club. Previously, I served as a board member of the Santa Clara County Employee Managers Association.Participation on these boards and committees addressed many important issues – all designed to enhance homeowner experiences and improve property values: • conducted extensive re abatement• built the new marina and café building• remodeled golf locker rooms and transitioned to electric carts • introduced pickleball• initiated homeowner surveys and developed a strategic plan • created a “rental compliance” position and STR policies to help rentals succeed• established a reserve fund to avoid special assessments • managed nances carefully and controlled costsI’ve been a homeowner since 1991, and a full-time resident since 2003. Virginia and I began as weekenders and happily retired here. I am also a pilot and a ight instructor, and I has helped me develop a deep understanding of our community and the issues we face on both a short- and long-term basis. I am well-qualied and ready to serve you on the PML Board. Here is my pledge to PML members: • Represent the interests of our whole community.• Make fact-based, data-driven decisions.• Promote open communications.• Manage PML funds and resources for near and long-term sustainability.• Strategically plan for future success.• Continually encourage investment in our community.• Maintain and improve our amenities. Most importantly, I am dedicated to keeping PML the wonderful place it is to live, play, and invest. I look forward to serving you on the board. I can be reached at daniaschaer@sbcglobal.net with any questions or comments. love spending summer afternoons on the lake. We also volunteer at Tenaya Elementary School, the Groveland Library, PML’s annual Boat Parade, Community Airport Day and Camp Tuolumne Trails. My professional career was in engineering management in Silicon Valley. As an engineer, I have a very practical and logical mind; I form opinions based on facts, not emotions or politics. I like working with people and am a good communicator. Most importantly, my only agenda is good management and creating a great experience for all homeowners. I believe it’s important that our board members be “a force for good” in our community, not disruptive or disrespectful. We deserve intelligent, dedicated, well-organized, and non-political directors for PML’s future.I look forward to serving our community on the PML Board. JULY PML NEWS 37EVACUATION STEPSWhen urgent evacuation is necessary, these steps will guide you to leave safely and quickly.1 REVIEW EVACUATION CHECKLISTGo over your Evacuation Plan Checklist often. Make sure it includes where to meet, who to call, and how to leave safely. Keep it updated so you’re always ready to move fast.2 MONITOR WILDFIRE UPDATESMake sure you monitor wildres in your area and know your community’s emergency response plan, evacuation orders, and evacuation centers.3 PUT “GO BAG” IN THE CARKeep your Emergency Supply Kit in your car. It should include things like water, snacks, a rst aid kit, and papers you need. This way, you’re always set to leave in a hurry.4 WEAR THE RIGHT CLOTHESDress to protect yourself in a wildre. Wear clothes that cover your skin (100% cotton is best), like long pants and tops, and tough shoes. This helps guard you against heat and sparks.5 GET PETS READY TO EVACUATEDon’t forget about your pets. Make a plan for their safety. Have carriers, food, and water ready so they can leave quickly and safely with you.HOW TO PREPARE FOR POWER OUTAGES DURING WILDFIRESWhen wildres strike, power outages are common. Along with the pre-evacuation steps above, here’s what you need to know to stay safe and prepared. • Learn manual operation: Be able to open garage doors or gates without power. • Understand utility controls: Get to know your home’s utility boxes for electricity, water, and gas and how to safely manage them. • Build an Emergency Supply Kit: Pack essentials like water, coolers, non-perishable food, manual can-opener, current medications, battery-operated radio, durable ashlights, extra batteries, and phone chargers. • Keep vehicles ready: Maintain at least half a tank of gas in your vehicle. • Create a safety plan: Keep shoes near your bed in case you need to evacuate during the night and have a clear plan for your family and pets during emergencies. • Generator use & safety: Understand your generator’s safety guidelines. Know where to connect it, what electrical cords to use, and the electrical load rating. Improper installation may put yourself or utility workers at risk for electrocution. • Stay connected: Always have a charged cell phone for emergencies and keep up with the latest information from CAL FIRE and local authorities. WHAT TO DO IF THE POWER GOES OUTIn the event of a power outage, especially during wildre threats, it’s important to stay calm and follow these simple steps:• Keep fridge & freezer shut: This helps preserve food longer.• Turn off gas & combustibles: Shut off gas lines and items like propane tanks.• Avoid power lines: Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead lines and electrical equipment. Never touch them.• Stay updated: Use a battery-powered radio or your cellphone for wildre updates.WHEN TO EVACUATE DURING A WILDFIREIf re ofcials suggest evacuating, it’s best to leave right away. This helps you avoid danger and keeps roads clear for reghters. In big wildres, there’s no time for door-to-door warnings, so if you’re told to go, do it fast to stay safe.Following evacuation orders:• Stay informed: You’ll be advised of potential evacuations as early as possible. Listen to local radio or TV for updates from authorities.• Ofcials decide: Fire ofcials decide when and where to evacuate based on the re, wind, and terrain.• Law enforcement role: Police enforce evacuation orders. Follow their directions right away.• “Order” & “warning”: These terms alert you to the signicance of the danger. Other terms like “precautionary” and “immediate threat” might be used too.• Act fast: In severe wildres, there’s no time to waste. If advised to leave, do so without delay.• Don’t wait for orders: It’s safer to leave before a mandatory order is issued.• Stay alert: You may be directed to temporary assembly areas to await transfer to a safe location.• Help reghters: Don’t return home until re ofcials notify you that it’s safe to do so.RETURNING HOME SAFELYBeing aware of hazards is crucial when you return home:• Wait for clearance: Don’t go home until it’s declared safe.• Watch for dangers: Look out for things like downed power lines.• Check gas lines: Be cautious with propane tanks and gas lines.• Inspect for re hazards: Search for any hidden embers or res.

We are truly blessed with a great Golf Course and thank you Rob Abbott our Golf Course Superintendent and his crew for the wonderful condition of our Hidden Gem. MEN’S PURPLE/GREEN COMBO TEE CHANGES Beginning on July 1, 2025 the following changes will go into eect for the Men’s Purple/Green Combo Tees: * Hole #6 will change from a Purple Tee to a Green Tee. * Hole #10 will change from a Purple Tee to a Green Tee. * Hole #11 will change from a Green Tee to a Purple Tee. Reasons for the changes: 1) The men’s and women’s Purple/Green Combo tees have been the same but the women’s par on #6 & #10 is 5 and the men’s par is 4. Moving the men’s tees to the Green Tee on these two holes is warranted due to the difference in par and the length of the holes. 2) Playing hole #11 from the Green Tee made it necessary to adjust the handicap holes on the back nine due to the 168 -yard shorter distance difference from the Gold Tee. By moving back to the Purple Tee it makes it so we can keep the handicap holes the same for all the tees. 3) Our new scorecards reflect these changes and the new scorecards have rounded corners so we can easily recognize the new scorecards. If you have any questions, please call the Golf Shop. DRIVING RANGE As of July 1, the Driving Range will be open from 7:30am until 5:00pm (Last Ball Hit at 5:00pm). Hole location, flag locations, pin placement all refer to the location that the cup and agstick are placed on the green. Cups are moved around the green quite easily using a specialty hole-cutting tool. e tool extracts a cylindrical chunk of grass and soil from the green. e cylindrical material is placed into the previous cups location, and the cup and ag are relocated to the new hole location. During the busy season hole locations are typically changed every day. The most important factor when deciding where to place the cup is to utilize good judgment in deciding location so as to provide players the best experience. Cups should be placed at least four paces or about a agstick away from the edge of the green. Additionally, the USGA recommends a two-foot radius around the cup that should be as level as possible and in turf that is free of defects. A cup should be placed so that no matter where the golfer is putting from, and assuming continuous putting surface between the putter and the hole, it should be possible to stop the ball within those two feet. Daily rotation of cups, especially during periods of heavy play is essential to cut down on wear and tear to the turf and helps to spread out and distribute foot trac evenly over the entire green.Sta use a hole placement rotation chart when setting up the course -- six cups placed in the front third, six in the center and six in back of the green. Each of these has a color designation red ag in the front, white ag center, blue ag in the back. To properly judge a placement or to make sure placement is in the correct zone, the green will be paced o. On a green such as #1 this is very easy and straight forward. e green is 33 paces deep, that means 11 paces from the front is red zone, 11-22 paces is white and the remainder is the blue zone. Most complaints about cup location on the course come from holes 4,12 and 18. e reason for that is the greens position to the fairway. All three of these greens sit at an angle to the fairway, so when they are paced and divided into thirds the ag zones may be eliminated on one side of the green and exaggerated on the other, this often causes confusion. An example would be the red zone on hole 12. If the green is paced o properly there is no red zone on the left of the green and an exceptionally large red zone to the right. No matter where the golfer is putting from, know that great care and a lot of experience has gone into choosing the ag and cup location. Yes, I know occasionally there may be one misplaced but considering that we move every cup on each green around 300 times per year for a total of 5400 placements, I believe sta is doing a stellar job. Enjoy your round and be sure to thank a Greenskeeper.ADMINISTRATIONTEE TO GREEN ROB ABBOTT – GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT(www.pmlmgc.com) that you can visit to sign-up online for your membership (see Men’s Club eligibility rules) or to print an application. Once you are a Men’s Club Member, you can sign-up for tournaments online. PROPERTY OWNER ANNUAL GOLF CART RENTAL AGREEMENT Every person who drives a golf cart on the course, is required to sign a golf cart rental agreement at the time of registration, before they can drive a golf cart. PML Property Owners sign the agreement one-time and that covers the entire year. If you have not signed your agreement you can go to the PML website (www.pinemountainlake.com) and fill it out and sign online or you will be asked to sign the form when you register in the Golf Shop. Click on amenities, then click on golf and you will see the agreement with other forms available. If you have any questions, please call the Golf Shop 1-209-962-8620. CARE OF THE GOLF COURSE TAKING CARE OF THE GOLF COURSE IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY; PLEASE DO YOUR PART! Replacing Divots – PML is a DIVOT FIRST facility; that means that if the divot is intact or even a portion of the divot is intact, we want you to replace the divot first and press the divot down firmly with your foot. When an intact divot is replaced, it will begin to root right away but a mulch filled divot will take weeks to fill in. If the divot hole is not totally filled in by the divot that you replaced then fill the rest of the hole with mulch and press down the divot firmly with your foot. If the divot is not intact, then fill the divot hole with mulch and smooth the mulch with your foot so it is level with the ground. Repairing Ball Marks – This is one of the major negatives in our great game; players either do not know how to repair ball marks correctly or don’t even attempt to repair them. Here is the correct way to repair a ball mark: Insert the divot tool just outside the edge of the ball mark, use the divot tool to mend in the outside portion if the ball mark towards the middle. Then use you putter to tap down the repaired turf. If a ball mark is repaired properly, you will not even be able to tell that there was a ball mark. NEVER PULL UP THE MIDDLE OF THE BALL MARK. Raking Bunkers – We are back to normal procedures concerning bunkers; PLEASE make sure that you rake the bunker after you have hit your shot. Golf Carts – Driving golf carts on the fairways has a negative effect on turf conditions over time. PLEASE use the 90-degree rule posted in each golf cart in order to minimize the cart traffic on the fairways.

JULY PML NEWS 61PML ORGANIZED CLUBSCALLING ALL PICKLEBALL PLAYERS OF ALL AGES AND SKILL LEVELS.We are so fortunate to have 6 great courts found just next to the Golf Course and Country Club. e Pickleball Club plays Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 am – 11 am in the summer and adjusts to slightly later as the weather and sunset changes. Pickleball skill levels are rated between a 1.0 for beginners to 6.0 for the very best professional players. e M,W,F players are generally 1.0 - 3.0. On the weekends you will see some more experienced, competitive play and it’s fun to even come out and watch. A handful of PML pickleball players even dabble in some tournament play outside of our area.SO, IF THIS INTERESTS YOU…COME OU T TO P L AY >>>>>>>>And see what this crazy, growing sport is all about. IF you don’t have a paddle, you can pick one up for about $25 at any sporting good store or Amazon. As your game improves you will look to a $75-$150 paddle. It’s an inexpensive sport, incredibly social, great for your body with the stretching, bending, cardio and great for the mind trying to keep track of the darn score and who is serving. It really is the hardest part of the game that and understanding the rules about when you can be in the “Kitchen”. Remembering 2:2:1 or 5:3: 2. is nearly impossible to keep track of when you are having so much fun and laughing with your friends.Let’s set the record straight: getting older doesn’t mean slowing down—it means playing smarter. Pickleball is the perfect sport for proving that. And if you’re over 50, you’ve already got the edge in experience, decision-making, and court awareness. e trick is learning how to use that edge.Whether you’re just getting serious about your game or already climbing your age- bracket ladder, this guide will help you upgrade your play with movement, mindset, and the one shot that changes everything.THE ONE SHOT THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING: RETURN OF SERVELet’s start with the biggest game-changer: the return of serve. It’s not ashy. It’s not fun to practice. But for 50+ players, it’s absolutely essential—and often overlooked.WHY IT MATTERS:1. You hit it every game—so improving it has an immediate payo.2. It gives you time to reach the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ), which is harder as we age.3. It stops your opponent’s attack before it starts.PML PICKLEBALL CLUBPAM RODGERSHOW TO HIT IT BETTER• Go deep: Aim 3–4 feet from the baseline. Short returns give your opponents license to attack.• Add net clearance: Don’t irt with the tape. Higher clears = deeper returns with less risk.• Use energy, not power: Let your motion carry the shot—no need to blast it.MY OPINION: You have often heard me brag about PML Pickleball Club throwing the best parties. So, if you are someone who likes to have fun and laugh. Or needs to move a bit more in your life and get into “better shape”. Or you like socializing with a group of active, healthy, fun folks outdoors 12 months of the year… en this is the Club for you. Email, text or call and just: COME OUT AND PLAY! We’re more than a building, we’re a hub for community, connection, Thanks to the addition of a second vehicle in 2022, Southside Community Connections’ WAVE program was able to significantly expand transportation options for residents in Groveland, Big Oak Flat, and surrounding communities. With only one vehicle, the WAVE bus, we were limited to traveling to Sonora three days a week and Modesto two days a week. The second vehicle, a mini-van, allowed us to offer much more:and curiosity.Looking to stay productive during the summer months? 66 JULY PML NEWSOUR COMMUNITYWe’ve just about hit mid-summer and, so far, it’s been a busy one for Helping Hands. Thank goodness we have air-conditioning to make shopping and working comfortable. We held our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the Pine Mountain Lake Grill in mid-June. It was a fantastic day with wonderful food, lots of prizes given away and wonderful fellowship with our group of stellar volunteers. We look forward thanking our volunteers this way each year and we appreciate the PML GRILL for the excellent food and super service they give us.We have some great news to share with the community. We are now selling Gift Certificates for the Thrift Store. If you have someone who shops there and you want to thank them for something they’ve done for you, or just because, get them a gift certificate at Helping Hands. They don’t expire and they can continue to be used until the amount is depleted. They’re sold, tax free, in $10 increments, and $10 at the Thrift Store can really go far!Our Helping Hands organization is sponsoring the September 20th, 49’r Festival Parade this year. Our beloved landlord, Leonard Cassaretto is posthumously the Grand Marshall this year, so we’re extremely proud to support this event in his honor. We’ll be marching proudly right behind the Grand Marshall entry that will have the Cassaretto family members riding to honor their patriarch, Leonard. We appreciate and continue to receive wonderful donations from our generous community, however, please be sure your donations are items that are in sellable condition. Many times, we receive dirty laundry, items that are old, ripped and torn, broken or just garbage. Even though we’re a registered 501c3 non-prot and sell mostly used items, we’re very selective about the merchandise we sell. We try to stock only items that are in the best condition. e more we have to throw away, the more that cuts into our prot, that, as everyone knows, goes back to our community.Thank you for supporting Helping Hands with your purchases and donations. We, as volunteers, are very proud of how we’re able to assist the Community in the multitude of ways we do, and your purchases and donations make that all possible. Enjoy the rest of the summer – stay safe and healthy and come into town often and visit the local businesses. Help to keep your town of GROVELAND STRONG and THRIVING!HELPING HANDS HAPPENINGSPATTI BEAULIEUOUR COMMUNITYWAVE PROGRAM AT SOUTHSIDE COMMUNITY CONNECTIONSNANCY A. REGGIO – EXECUTIVE DIRECTORWe’re incredibly grateful for the continued support from the Groveland, Big Oak Flat, and surrounding communities. anks to you, Southside Community Connections (SCC) has been able to provide vital services through our WAVE transportation program—including free rides to medical appointments and shopping trips o the hill. While operational costs are mostly covered by grants, these funds don’t include the cost of purchasing new vehicles. Despite this, we’ve managed to keep two vehicles on the road most days. In fact, ridership has increased by 50% in 2025 compared to last year! That’s why the recent mechanical issues with our WAVE van have been especially challenging. Although it’s scheduled for repair we know it needs to be replaced soon to keep up with the growing demand. Many community members ask how they can support SCC. Right now, one way to help would be by donating a new or gently used multi-passenger vehicle. Donating not only helps SCC—it may benefit you as well. JULY PML NEWS 67OUR COMMUNITYOUR COMMUNITYBrainy Groveland, the program of volunteers who help third and fourth graders with their reading and math, has completed another successful year volunteering at Tenaya Elementary. In addition to the math and reading help, students especially enjoy spending time with caring adults. Volunteers worked with third graders on ursday afternoons to help them select and enjoy reading “just right” books. Meanwhile, on Mondays, another group of volunteers helped fourth graders learn how to think about math word problems and develop strategies to solve them. At the end of the year we celebrated with the students and each received a math or reading book to take home. Here are some photos of the students and volunteers at work. If you’d like to join this very rewarding program, please contact Virginia Richmond for more information: 962.6336. Each volunteer only commits to one one-hour session per month. We provide training and all materials. Just before school closed for the summer, Friends of the Groveland Library (FOGL) arrived at Tenaya elementary school with hundreds of books to give away to all the students. The children were able to select a free book to take home and keep. They were pretty excited! FOGL members Audrey Prouse, Michele Roberts, Cathy O’Connell and Virginia Richmond helped the kids select a “just right” book. We love seeing children excited about books. In addition, come to the Book Nook Saturday mornings for a large selection of bargain-priced children’s books and movies. The library also offers STEM Club at 2:00pm on the first Friday of each month and the Summer Reading Program over six weeks in June/July. JULY PML NEWS 69CAMP DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE CTT’s summer sessions are in full swing, and our campers with disabilities are fully immersed in the fun and excitement of their unique camp experiences. For many, this is the only time each year they are able to step away from their daily routines at home or in group living situations. The memories they make here stay with them long after summer ends—and they carry that joy with them until they return to CTT the following year.As many of you may already know, CTT Founder Jerry Baker is currently facing some medical challenges. While he is not currently involved in the day-to-day operations at camp, he remains actively engaged behind the scenes and is working closely with me to ensure CTT continues to thrive. At CTT’s recent board meeting, long-time board member Chris Noe was elected as Interim President to help guide daily operations and support our long-term vision. Looking ahead, we’re already planning for 2026 and exploring exciting ways to expand CTT’s programs year-round.A MESSAGE FROM JERRY We now understand so much more about what it means to live with severe disabilities than we did in the past. I recently underwent surgery for a brain tumor, during which I had a stroke. For someone like me—who once took great pride in communicating—losing that ability has been incredibly humbling.Severe disabilities are often seen as a form of weakness, but living with them actually requires immense strength. You don’t truly grasp what CTT campers go through until you experience it yourself. Simple tasks that most people take for granted—speaking, moving, expressing a need—can become overwhelming challenges. That’s why Tuolumne Trails is so vital. It helps us recognize the complexity involved in things we usually consider basic. It pushes us to put ourselves in our campers’ shoes, to see the world through their perspective. Our campers deserve deep empathy and unwavering support. Their resilience reminds us that strength doesn’t always look the way we expect—and that empathy, understanding and innovation matter more than ever.PLEASE DONATE SUMMER PROGRAMSCTT’s eight summer camp programs are well underway. Campers are enjoying the memorable experiences of fishing in the fishing pond, swimming in the pool, creating mosaics in arts & crafts, performing skits, etc, which will stay with them for years to come. This season, we’re proud to have our largest staff since CTT opened—an incredible team of 18 counselors (including three from Ireland), along with dedicated team leads and nurses—making it all possible. Some of our 2025 camp sponsors include Mechanics Bank, Chicken Ranch Rancheria, Elliot Family Foundation, Dave Koz and Christopher Lawrence.Camp Tuolumne Trails’ mission is devoted to helping those with disabilities and those who support them by providing an accommodating environment for healing, respite, education and recreation. If you’d like to find out more about CTT, take a tour, volunteer or learn more about donating and legacy giving, please call CTT at (209) 962-7534, email info@tuolumnetrails.org or visit: http://www.tuolumnetrails.org. JULY PML NEWS 73FOGL had the opportunity to participate in ROOFBB’s 2025 SummerFest at Mary Laveroni Park on June 14. What a great day of fun celebrating the Groveland community and local businesses. is annual event, which ROOFBB volunteers work tirelessly to put on, raises funds for the community and includes food vendors, wine and beer tasting, music, children’s activities, and booths from local makers and artists.Among those booths, Friends of the Groveland Library volunteers were present to provide information to residents and visitors about the Groveland library and its activities, as well as information on FOGL’s mission to promote the use and expansion of services of the Groveland Library, to promote literacy, and to support the library. In addition, volunteers promoted the Book Nook, the only used book store in Groveland, which helps fund library activities, books for schools and reading programs and, more importantly, a fth open day at the library. DON’T TAKE A VACATIONFROM YOUR FAITHPASTOR BOB KANDELSOUR COMMUNITYDEAR FRIENDS,As June unfolds and ushers in the beauty of summer, we nd ourselves surrounded by the splendor of the Sierra Mountains—warm days, breathtaking sunsets, and long hours to enjoy God’s majestic creation. Whether your plans include y shing, hiking Half Dome, relaxing at Tenaya Lake, or enjoying the waters at Pine Mountain Lake or Don Pedro, this season is a gift.Summer is often a time to step away from our routines, to rest and recharge. But let us be reminded that our walk with the Lord never pauses. Jesus calls us to abide in Him always. In John 15:4 (NIV), He says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” Let this summer be a season not only of recreation but also of spiritual renewal. Stay connected to the Vine. Let your soul be refreshed as much as your body.If you’re seeking a way to re-engage with worship and community, we warmly invite you to our All-Church Picnic on Sunday, June 1st, following our 10:00 AM worship service. It’s a great opportunity to reconnect and enjoy fellowship together. Visit our website for full details: https://www.grovelandefc.com.Wherever you nd yourself this summer, consider joining a Christian church in the area. At Gateway Community Church, we worship every Sunday at 10:00 AM, and we welcome you to join us.In His Service,Pastor Bob Kandels
