8 AUGUST PML NEWSADMINISTRATIONGENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGEJOE POWELL – PCAM, CCAM-LS, CMCA, AMS GENERAL MANAGERNEGATIVE IMPACTS OF AB 130On June 30, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 130 into law. The new law signicantly limits a community association’s ability to enforce its governing documents by capping fines at$100 per violation, unless the violation “may result in an adverse health or safety impact on the common area or another member’s property”.As a result of this last minute, signicant change to the law, we have been working with our General Counsel to update our schedule of monetary penalties and governing document enforcement procedures. Given that this change to the law severely restricts our ability to compel members to voluntarily comply with the CC&Rs and rules that they agreed to follow when they purchased in our Association, we are most certainly going to see a huge increase in our legal budget. e Board of Directors has a duciary duty to ensure that the CC&Rs and rules are enforced. Unfortunately, that comes with a cost. If the Association is unable to levy an appropriate monetary fine to compel a member to comply, we will be forced to move a lot faster into litigation. As everyone knows, lawsuits are costly and very time-consuming.ankfully, the majority of our members follow the CC&Rs and rules and if they are unaware of a rule, a courtesy notice from the Association is usually sucient to bring it to their attention so that they can correct the situation. PG&E POWERLINE UNDERGROUNDING PROJECT UPDATEPG&E continues their powerline undergrounding project down Pine Mountain Drive. ey have trenched, installed and covered the underground powerlines with an asphalt patch and a few metal plates. Unfortunately, the project areas remain rough for drivers on Pine Mountain Drive. We have expressed our concerns and PG&E has bumped up the schedule for the asphalt repairs to put our roadway back in the original or better condition that existed at the start of the project. While the PG&E powerline undergrounding division has mostly communicated well, the power-pole replacement division has caused multiple issues mostly by the outside contractors hired to perform the pole replacement work. Everything from blocking both lanes of trac with no notication to dropping large generators in the middle of the lane with no notication or trac control. Additionally, we have observed their employees driving large equipment trucks and drifting into oncoming trac causing a potential accident. We are working to make contact with the leadership of this division to get them to control their contractors and handle these safety issues and communicate more eectively so that we can pass on this information to our membership. From a member communication standpoint, we put out PG&E project work schedule information through our PML eSNAP direct email program and post on the official PML Website as soon as we receive this information from PG&E. We encourage all members to sign up for our email communication platform so that they can stay informed regarding this project and other important Association information.PML ROADS REFURBISHMENT PROJECTAs I mentioned in a previous article, our roads refurbishment project was originally scheduled to start in May. We decided to reschedule it for September so that it would not cause a conict with the PG&E project. We will put out specic information regarding when and where our contractor will be working and how the roads project will aect members and guests as we get closer to the start of the project. As for the road line striping work, this will be completed after our contractors complete the roads refurbishment project.PML SWIM CENTER POOL RULESA draft copy of the proposed new Pool rules was presented at the July Board meeting. A copy of the proposed rules has been published in this edition of the PML News and has been posted to the ocial PMLA website for member review and comment. Members who are interested in providing feedback are asked to email the Board of Directors at PMLABoard@pinemountainlake.com and attend the August 16th monthly board meeting. The Board appreciates all member feedback and they take this into consideration before the adoption of any PML operational rules. PML INDEPENDENCE DAY FIREWORKS EVENTOur annual Independence Day Fireworks event went well this year, with no major injuries or accidents. We did have a situation with an unauthorized drone during the event. A drone disrupted the reworks show, interfering with one of the rework’s radio signal and altering its trajectory. While some of the rework’s debris landed near a PML residence, CAL FIRE responded quickly and extinguished two small burn areas. No property damage reported.Prior to the event, we notified every lakefront owner to let them know that all drones were prohibited over the lake and Association common area. We asked them to also notify their vacation renters and guests. Given the reworks deection incident, we are developing a formal drone policy and investigating drone mitigation technology so that we can prevent these types of safety issues in the future.Overall, our Marina, Department of Safety, Maintenance and management team did a great job coordinating and running this event. We have received nothing but positive comments from our members and guests and we appreciate the extra eort by our team during this important holiday week.PML ADVISORY COMMITTEE OPENINGSWe currently have openings on three committees, specifically, the Covenants Committee Environmental Control Committee and Equine Advisory Committee. Members can apply online by going to the PML Website. We also have a PDF version of the form that you can ll out that is on the website. ese are all voluntary position and a great way for members to get involved in the governance of our community.Until next month, wishing everyone a fun and safe August!
AUGUST PML NEWS 9ADMINISTRATIONPRESIDENT'SMESSAGEMIKE GUSTAFSON – PMLA BOARD PRESIDENTAs I write this, we are in the full blown “July 4th” mania!! Truth be told, I sorta like all the hubbub and action. Nice to see the usually dark houses all lit up and people having fun. e reworks were wonderful, and the Boat Parade organized by Friends of the Lake was outstanding. ere were about 20 boats amazingly decorated. e spectators at the beach and all along the shore cheered as the decorated boats cruised by. e judges had a hard time selecting the winners! Around 9:15pm we were all treated to a 30 minute display of reworks. We like to go out on the lake and get the best seat in the “house;” I never get tired of the event. Well done!Special thanks to the PMLA’s dedicated staff who worked so hard to make our celebration fun and safe. On June 28 we held a Town Hall meeting. e board holds quarterly Town Halls where we can be less formal than the usual monthly Board meetings and people can bring up any topic at all. One of the rst questions was about the rumor that the HOA was going to apply a $5,000 Special Assessment for the dredging project. Like most all rumors spread on Social Media, this one is totally false. ere is not any thoughts, action, or discussion by the board or management to do a special assessment for any reason!! e dredging project is still very new and is only in the information gathering process. Over the years silt builds up, especially in the coves, and periodically needs to be removed.Speeding inside PML was another hot topic. is is a big problem for us and gets worse during the summer season. e speed limit on our streets is 25 MPH. We have installed a few electronic speed signs to remind folks to slow down. We are considering speed bumps and rumble strips and electronic speed signs that take a photo of the oending car and then we could send out a ticket/ne. All ideas are on the table. Speeding is dangerous to wildlife, other drivers and pedestrians. Please slow down; you are in the mountains, relax, take a breath! It seems that our local bears have discovered which homes put out their trash before pick up day and the bears avail themselves to the left over food. Obviously this is a really bad idea, we do not want to encourage the bears to be here. So please do not put your trash out the night or days before pick up. You can also consider installing bear boxes to dissuade bears and all the other hungry animals from dining on your left overs. ank you.Congratulations to Luke Granger, who has reached an incredible milestone of 25 years with our Maintenance team. His hard work and dedication over the years has made a lasting impact. He’s been through storms, upgrades, emergencies, and everything in between, always with a can-do attitude. His commitment behind the scenes has not gone unnoticed. ank you, Luke, for all you’ve done and continue to do!Luke Granger (left) and Board President, Mike Gustafson (right) are pictured.CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF SERVICE
10 AUGUST PML NEWSADMINISTRATIONWelcome to August everyone!! By now you have probably already had many ice cream cones, hot dogs, French fries, a mild sunburn and of course, summer memories with family and friends. Summer is almost out of sight. We do have a little time left to go until fall arrives, but there is nothing wrong with visualizing bonres, hot cocoa, warm fuzzy blankets, and annel sheets. e autumn season will be upon us before I nish writing this article.Pssst…e PML administration oces are open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. e oce closes daily from noon until 1p.m. for lunch and is closed on weekends.Feel free to call 1-209-962-8600 or email me at admin@pinemountainlake.com with any questions or concerns. We are always here to help!Let’s get into it!WHAT IS THE SPEED LIMIT IN PINE MOUNTAIN LAKE?The streets within the Pine Mountain Lake Subdivision have a speed limit of 25 MPH. ere are no exceptions. Please follow accordingly. Slow and steady always wins the race. We want to keep the streets safe for everyone that is enjoying the environment. CAN I HAVE MY FRIENDS FOLLOW ME THROUGH THE GATES?NO! All Pine Mountain Lake Entry gates are designed to allow access to one vehicle through at a time. Any person in a motorized vehicle following another vehicle through the access gates will be subject to a monetary penalty (a warning letter will be issued for the rst oense: a monetary penalty may be levied for the second oense). Individuals following vehicles through the gates may lead to a harmful situation. All damage done to a gate or equipment caused by individuals following a vehicle through the gate or attempting improper entry or exit will be the responsibility of the individual, including parts and labor. If someone does get through the gate on your entry, please call the Main Gate 1 (209) 962-8615 immediately and report that a car followed you through and you did NOT let them in. Please do not engage with anyone about where they are going, just call the Main Gate and let them proceed with the issue.WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO FOR SUMMER BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS?ere are several specially recognized fun days in August for everyone. Many children will start going back to school during this month, so here are a few ideas that may be well suited for you and yours. When all else fails, you can also plan an entire day of just moving slow, taking it all in and doing a whole lot of nothing. Bodies and minds need rest, especially after a wild summer of doing all the things.AUGUST 2 – NATIONAL ICE CREAM SANDWICH DAYbowl. Roll dough into 2-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Do not overbake; the cookies should be set, but still soft. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before removing to nish cooling on wire racks.Using an ice cream scoop, mold ice cream into a ball about the size of the cookies. Place scoop of ice cream between two cookies and gently press together. If you like a smooth edge, run the back of a spoon around the edge of the ice cream sandwich. Working quickly, ll all the cookies, lay out on a baking sheet, and place in the freezer to harden. Serve when the ice cream has frozen solid. Sandwich cookies can be stored in a freezer bag for up to two weeks.AUGUST 3 - NATIONAL FRIENDSHIP DAYThis day will specifically acknowledge many kinds of friendships, but obviously any day friendship can be celebrated. Enjoy the little things in life, as they are truly the BIG THINGS!!LET’S ASK ANGELAANGELA HICKS – PML ADMINISTRATION OFFICEere is never a wrong time to enjoy an ice cream sandwich. AUGUST PML NEWS 11ADMINISTRATIONPMLA MONEY MATTER$DAN SZATHMARY, ASSOCIATION CONTROLLERWe’re well into summer which also means we’re wrapping up our busiest time of year, and right around the corner is the start of our budget planning process for next year. One of the rst steps in that process is updating our reserve study and refreshing our 30-year projection of what it will cost to repair or replace the association’s assets. Our reserve component list currently includes 781 items, with individual replacement values ranging from $1,000 to over $1 Million. Each year, we review and update this list. From there, we estimate how much it will cost to repair or replace each item next year, and for the next 29 years beyond that.Ultimately, the Board must decide how much of the money generated from assessments goes toward operations now, and how much is set aside to fund the future repair and replacement of PMLA’s assets over the long term. ere’s a direct trade-o: use more cash today to run operations and keep assessments down, or set more aside for tomorrow to fund long-term sustainability of all the assets of the association. ere’s no one-size-ts-all formula for this decision. Every community is dierent, with varying needs, levels of risk tolerance, and overall nancial health—all of which play into determining what a “well-funded” reserve should look like.If you’ve done some Googling on the topic, you’ve probably run across websites from reserve study specialists suggesting that being “at least 70% funded” is the gold standard. While this number is frequently quoted, it’s often unrealistic and inecient; especially for larger, more stable associations like ours. In fact, most associations in California are funded well below that 70% benchmark. Our current reserve study specialist, who has more than 20 years of industry experience, has multiple years of reserve spending. Even if contributions were reduced or even paused entirely, there is still plenty of room to fund our needs for multiple years.is strong reserve position gives us the exibility to thoughtfully plan for the future without compromising the needs of today. As we enter this next budget cycle, that’s exactly the kind of balance we’ll be working to maintain this year and those that follow. As always, would love to hear from you anytime at Controller@PineMountainLake.com or 1-209-962-8606.noted that given PMLA’s scale and relatively steady reserve spending patterns, a 30% funded level is generally more than sucient. If we were a smaller or less predictable organization, we might need to aim higher; but in our case, it would likely mean tying up funds that could be used more eectively elsewhere. On the ip side, there are some who argue that funding reserves at all is wasteful, that anything more than the bare minimum (often 10% of operating expenses) is a dollar better spent on current operations. is school of thought points out that the more we put into reserves, the higher our assessments have to be, so why burden members today with expenses that will be incurred well into the future? As always, the best answer lies somewhere in the middle. It’s about finding the right balance for our community, under our current conditions.PMLA’s reserve fund is in a strong, healthy position. In fact, we’re nearing record levels and are projected to have over $3 million in reserves by year’s end. at puts us in an excellent place; not only able to cover upcoming planned expenses, but also with enough cushion to handle

14 AUGUST PML NEWSADMINISTRATIONADMINISTRATIONHi everyone, John here again, this time to talk about garbage. Everyone has it, nobody wants it, let’s work together to get it secured and hauled away and not scattered in our streets! Other than unregistered rentals, garbage cans left out on days other than pick up days, and scattered garbage are the major reasons you’ll get a call from our oce and see a letter from me in your mailbox. When you or your renters leave garbage cans out, empty or not, it heightens the chances that bears and other wildlife will be coming by looking for an easy meal. ey aren’t the neatest eaters, so you can bet the garbage will be scattered by the time they’re done! An overreliance on human waste is a major reason in the closing of the dump sites in Yosemite back in the 1970s. e bears became so comfortable around humans that it posed With the season in full swing, now seemed like a good time for some midseason reminders: First and foremost, our recently overhauled ECC Guidelines have been adopted, and are available online. And the guidelines didn’t just have your run of the mill nip and tuck—nope, they had the full works! We streamlined the entire document to walk you through the entire ECC process from beginning to end. We added projects, updated terminology, County code, and reformatted the entire document so that it has an easy to follow, user friendly flow. We continue to have issues with the wildlife rummaging through unsecured a major hazard to park guests. While black bears are naturally wary of humans, they can pose a danger if they become habituated to human food or are surprised. As most of you know Yosemite has made various measures to reduce bear reliance on human waste like securing garbage in bear proof receptacles to keep both the wildlife and humans safe as well as regularly cleaning receptacle to reduce any lingering smells. A bear has more than a hundred times as many smell receptors as people do, and can follow scents back to their source as far as a mile or more. ey learn quick as well, returning year after year if the meals are abundant. I have been trying to teach them to be self-sucient, but my training sessions haven’t had much traction! Just kidding, but seriously keeping your cans in a clean, secured enclosure, such as a bear box, is the best steps you can take to decrease bear reliance on trash cans. So, what better way to keep our furry neighbors from scattering your many, many pints of Haagen-Dazs all over your property, than with a bear box? For your convenience, a single, two-can capacity bear box is now approvable within the 20-foot front property setback (or any other previously compliant location). Like with all other exterior projects, you can submit a bear box online at: https://www.pinemountainlake.com/ecc-project-submittal-process/ The Committee will need a plot plan documenting the location and dimensions of the bear box, which exact bear box you are proposing to install, and how the bear box will be anchored to the ground. Inspections, inspections, inspections! human waste as well as keeping your trash from being scattered amongst our charming mountain community. If you ever have any questions on ways to keep your garbage where it’s meant to be call me at 1 (209) 962-1245 or email me at RCC@Pinemountainlake.com. I’m always happy to help with any knowledge that I can pass along to make our community cleaner and safer. Together, by properly managing trash and educate guest and renters we can reduce those chances of having an unexpected evening visitor. Can’t sleep because the bears are activating your security cameras, go visit our web page at www.pinemountainlake.com, click on the Resource page, then on the Community Standards icon. Here you will have access to submit to the PMLA ECC for that much needed bear box. While you’re there, you can get a copy of the Renter’s Brochure, or get answers to some frequently asked questions.Once your project has been approved, please make sure that you are scheduling your inspections. Your approval letter will advise you as to when an inspection is needed. You can easily schedule an inspection online at: https://www.pinemountainlake.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=frm_forms_preview&form=request-an-ecc-inspection And as always, it is important to note that all exterior projects must be submitted for approval. If you have any questions about how, when, and where to submit your projects, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions—I would be happy to assist you! 16 AUGUST PML NEWSAs temperatures rise in Pine Mountain Lake, it’s more important than ever to keep your horses cool, comfortable, and protected from pests. At the PML Equestrian Center, we’re taking every step to ensure our horses stay healthy through the heat and the height of fly season.Hydration is key during these hot days—always make sure your horses have access to plenty of clean, fresh water. Flies can also become a major nuisance this time of year, so we recommend spraying your horses with fly spray at least once a day.At both of our barns, we have a full fly spray misting system installed in each stall and throughout the aisleways. This year, we’re using a natural-based fly spray in our system, and we’ve been thrilled with how well it’s working. In addition to the automatic system, our horses wear fly masks during daytime turnout to protect their eyes and ears from bugs, and the masks are removed each evening when they return to their stalls.Fly prevention doesn’t stop with spray—cleanliness is key. Our compost pile is hauled away at least twice a week to reduce fly breeding grounds, and keeping our facility clean is always a top priority.DID YOU HEAR? 26 AUGUST PML NEWSI feel lucky to live in PML. e wonderful people, beautiful mountains, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of tranquility it all brings makes me glad I chose to move here. I spent the rst 27 years of my professional life as a federal civil service employee in administrative and managerial positions throughout California. Switching from the Federal to County government in 2000, I spent the next 18 years as a Senior Analyst in the Santa Clara County Health and Hospital System, directing and managing County-wide patient-focused projects. I retired in 2018 and happily moved to PML in 2019.I am a U.S. Army veteran and former Coast Guard reservist. I hold both an undergraduate and graduate degree in public administration. is training was instrumental in my development of public policy initiatives and budgeting strategies to support long-term County planning objectives. I currently serve our community through volunteer work with Southside Community Connections and the Humane Society in Jamestown. Currently, I chair the PML Environmental Control Committee (ECC) which oversees PML Rules, Guidelines and Construction Standards. Last year, I was also a member of the Short-Term Rental (STR) Committee, which developed our current STR policies. At present, I am a board member of the PML Lady Niners and a regular member of the PML Residents Club. Previously, I served as a board member of the Santa Clara County Employee Managers Association.Participation on these boards and committees has helped me develop a deep understanding of our community and the issues we face on both a short- and long-term basis. I am well-qualied and ready to serve you on the PML Board. Here is my pledge to PML members: • Represent the interests of our whole community.• Make fact-based, data-driven decisions.• Promote open communications.• Manage PML funds and resources for near and long-term sustainability.• Strategically plan for future success.• Continually encourage investment in our community.• Maintain and improve our amenities. Most importantly, I am dedicated to keeping PML the wonderful place it is to live, play, and invest. I look forward to serving you on the board. I can be reached at daniaschaer@sbcglobal.net with any questions or comments. MEET NEW BOARD MEMBER DANIA (DANI) SCHAFFER“SKILLED LEADERSHIP FOR PML”I’ve been asked to serve on the PML board again and am happy to do so because I believe it’s important to have thoughtful, rational, unbiased, non-radical representatives who will work productively with PML sta. When I previously served on the Board, I gained valuable experience about what works and what doesn’t, the laws around Homeowners’ Associations, the budget process, and PML’s challenges and priorities. I believe that I can make a positive contribution to our great community and ensure sound, responsible management. PML is a beautiful place with several dierent constituencies – full time residents, part-time vacationers, and rental property owners. It’s important that the Board balance everyone’s needs and interests. We must maintain and improve our aging amenities; after all, that’s why we all bought here. Allowing amenities to deteriorate will reduce our home values. During my time on the Board, we have addressed many important issues – all designed to enhance homeowner experiences and improve property values: • conducted extensive re abatement• built the new marina and café building• remodeled golf locker rooms and transitioned to electric carts • introduced pickleball• initiated homeowner surveys and developed a strategic plan • created a “rental compliance” position and STR policies to help rentals succeed• established a reserve fund to avoid special assessments • managed nances carefully and controlled costsI’ve been a homeowner since 1991, and a full-time resident since 2003. Virginia and I began as weekenders and happily retired here. I am also a pilot and a ight instructor, and I love spending summer afternoons on the lake. We also volunteer at Tenaya Elementary School, the Groveland Library, PML’s annual Boat Parade, Community Airport Day and Camp Tuolumne Trails. My professional career was in engineering management in Silicon Valley. As an engineer, I have a very practical and logical mind; I form opinions based on facts, not emotions or politics. I like working with people and am a good communicator. Most importantly, my only agenda is good management and creating a great experience for all homeowners. I believe it’s important that our board members be “a force for good” in our community, not disruptive or disrespectful. We deserve intelligent, dedicated, well-organized, and non-political directors for PML’s future.I look forward to serving our community on the PML Board. As with every month the Buildings and Grounds crew have their work cut out for them. The large landscaping project at the Stables will come to an end this month. In addition, the Fire Hardening of the lower barn is complete with new paint and stall panels included. The technicians will continue with gate updates, preventative and predictive work orders and requested work orders along with the emergency repairs that inevitably pop up. In addition to this load of work we will be undertaking a lighting project to improve safety at the administration building. This month is going to be a test of work and man power but this group is up for it.The Facilities crew as always is incredibly busy performing asphalt curb work throughout the association, this work helps to divert water correctly from the road, while protecting the road edge from the inevitable erosion. This work is taking place outside of areas were PMP work (Asphalt repair) will take place. Also on tap for the roads crew is crack sealing. Many of our roads develop cracks due to the constant expansion and contraction, crack sealing allows us additional time before a repave becomes necessary. Lake clearing to include lily’s, grass and the occasional escaped float toy continues, remember as the water level in our lake drops obstacles and obstruction may be exposed, so if you see something make sure to report it so it can be dealt with accordingly. This year is flying by and there is still so much to do, so back to work for us, and to all of you we hope for a wonderful August.MAINTENANCE MATTERSRICK LAFFRANCHI – MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS MANAGER

AUGUST PML NEWS 33August is typically a very active month for wildfires due to drying fuels, warm summer winds, and high temperatures. Many of us have prepared our properties in the event of a wildfire, and have worked to create a defensible space necessary to help combat wildfire. No matter how prepared we are, thousands of wildfires strike California every year. As Smokey says; only you can prevent forest fires! Some Pine Mountain Lake residents often find themselves wondering “what am I going to do with all my pine needles?” Every year PMLA member lots generate a significant amount of debris including but not limited to: leaves, needles, pine cones, yard clippings, branches, and other dead vegetation. Many of you know about and are familiar with the compost site, but a surprising number of members don’t know about this resource. Moving the men’s tees to the Green Tee on these two holes is warranted due to the dierence in par and the length of the holes.2) Playing hole #11 from the Green Tee made it necessary to adjust the handicap holes on the back nine due to the 168 -yard shorter distance dierence from the Gold Tee. By moving back to the Purple Tee it makes it so we can keep the handicap holes the same for all the tees.3) Our new scorecards reect these changes and the new scorecards have rounded corners so we can easily recognize the new scorecards. If you have any questions, please call the Golf Shop.DRIVING RANGEAs of August 1, the Driving Range will be open from 7:00am until 5:00pm (Last Ball Hit at 5:00pm). If you have any questions, please call the Golf Shop 1-209-962-8620.CARE OF THE GOLF COURSE TAKING CARE OF THE GOLF COURSE IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY; PLEASE DO YOUR PART!Replacing Divots – PML is a DIVOT FIRST facility; that means that if the divot is intact or even a portion of the divot is intact, we want you to replace the divot rst and press the divot down rmly with your foot. When an intact divot is replaced, it will begin to root right away but a mulch lled divot will take weeks to ll in. If the divot hole is not totally lled in by the divot that you replaced then ll the rest of the hole with mulch and press down the divot rmly with your foot. If the divot is not intact, then ll the divot hole with mulch and smooth the mulch with your foot so it is level with the ground.Repairing Ball Marks – is is one of the major negatives in our great game; players either do not know how to repair ball marks correctly or don’t even attempt to repair them. Here is the correct way to repair a ball mark: Insert the divot tool just outside the edge of the ball mark, use the divot tool to mend in the outside portion if the ball mark towards the middle. en use you putter to tap down the repaired turf. If a ball mark is repaired properly, you will not even be able to tell that there was a ball mark. NEVER PULL UP THE MIDDLE OF THE BALL MARK.Raking Bunkers – We are back to normal procedures concerning bunkers; PLEASE make sure that you rake the bunker after you have hit your shot.Golf Carts – Driving golf carts on the fairways has a negative eect on turf conditions over time. PLEASE use the 90-degree rule posted in each golf cart in order to minimize the cart trac on the fairways.Every year I hear statements that we cannot wait for winter to allow things to dry out! I certainly agree that areas become saturated and at times too wet. The course that is wet in the mornings typically is just perfect by the afternoon and without proper water the “spots” of turf or localized dry spots would wilt to the point of no return. Not only are these spots unsightly and not healthy the area then can fill in with weeds. That is why we spot fertilize, spot aerate and use a wetting agent and top-dress to improve the ability to wet the soil.We have multiple types of turf throughout the course. Most are considered cool season grasses that need more water when it gets 85 degrees and above and then the Bermuda grass which loves the heat requires less water. Trying to irrigate these varieties with one sprinkler head at the bottom of a hill or in a swale you begin to see that it is not as easy as it would appear to maintain 1730 sprinkler run times. en you get three days of above 95 degrees and then it drops 10 degrees and you have more challenges to keep those areas playable. We observe and get feedback from our operators and membership at times. Any and all information is appreciated to maintain over 70 acres of turf.I would also like to mention our maintenance crew and thank them for all the effort they give. We have ten full time staff members, including myself and our mechanic. We also have two seasonal staffers that work from spring into late fall, one of which is the one and only Alan MacDonald. Next time you see them on the course give them a wave and know that they are always trying to make your golfing experience a pleasant one. Please remember to repair your ball mark! Please observe the 90-degree rule.

52 AUGUST PML NEWSPML ORGANIZED CLUBSPML PICKLEBALL CLUBPAM RODGERS CALLING ALL PICKLEBALL PLAYERS OF ALL AGES AND SKILL LEVELS.5 TIPS FOR THE PERFECT POACHThe poach shot in pickleball is effective because it breaks patterns and disrupts the regular ow of a point. Timed properly, it can shake your opponent’s condence, keep them guessing and more defensive, and shrink the game at the kitchen line.ere’s no rulebook for when you can or can’t poach, but a common and eective moment is after a solid third shot drop by your partner. Here’s why, and how to execute it to perfection.4 It’s all about timing. Your team serves, the other team returns, now your teammate is sending back a third shot drop. is is when you plan your attack.4 Watch your partner’s shot. As your teammate drops, take two big steps in toward the kitchen. Watch the ball’s path. If it’s a quality drop, follow it up to the net, hedging towards the middle but not overcommitting. Now comes the fun part.4 Don’t commit too soon. Split step in front of the ball so that you’re stable, balanced, and ready to decide whether to stay put or go hunting.4 Watch their paddle face. Now look at their hips, head, and paddle face to gauge where the next shot is going. Odds are if they open up towards your partner’s side of the court, the poach will be in play.4 Attack on contact. As soon as the ball is hit towards your partner, it’s time to act. Take a few hard lateral steps in its direction and focus on making solid contact with your return, keeping it low, hard, and down the middle. Successful poach, executed.PICKLEBALL STRATEGY BY TANNER TOMASSIStrategy fundamentals that were gospel when you first started probably aren’t as relevant anymore. Some, believe it or not, are totally outdated.Myth #1 — Move as one. Standard convention says you move from the baseline to the kitchen as if you’re attached to your partner with a short string. He moves, you move. Modern pickleball demands different. When your partner is hitting a third, take two steps in and watch the ball’s flight. If it’s a good drop, crash the net and apply pressure wherever possible, giving your bestie time to join youMyth #2 — Forehand covers middle. e game simply moves too fast for this to apply anymore. Instead, here’s Tanner’s truth-bomb: When the ball is diagonal to you, you cover middle. is allows your partner to shade toward the line and limits all confusion about who’s got what. Easy peasy.Myth #3 — Heavy drives win points. Gone are the days when you can blast a drive through your opponent’s paddle for an easy point. Instead, take 25% o and focus on heavy topspin that drops low over the net. is way, the next shot has to be hit up to clear the net rather than down. Advantage you.Myth #4 — Always target the weaker opponent. If one opponent is signicantly weaker than the other, it can be tempting to hit nearly every shot their way. Don’t fall into this trap. is allows the stronger player to cheat way over while the weaker one barely has to move. Instead, keep the better player honest by hitting lots of balls his way. Now, attack the weaker side when the moment strikes.Myth #5 — Lose in the right way. You improve most by putting what you’re practicing into action in pressure situations. So, sign up for an event, then pick a new skill and ride it all the way through. If you lose, you lose. But that skill will get way better, way faster, guaranteed.COME OUT AND PLAY! Sophia is a graduate student in San Francisco studying urban planning. Sophia was on the swim team and played water polo in school. Her dad swam too, but couldn’t keep up with her. ird place went to part-timer Ilya Emelianov at 7:21. Ilya is a rising senior at St. Francis School in Mountain View where he’s on the swim team. You’ll see us marching in the parade alongside other community groups—always a highlight as we wave to familiar faces along the route. But that’s just the beginning. ROOFBB also coordinates the Rae and Live Auction areas of the festival, and preparations are already underway. We are actively collecting donations—if you have an item, experience, or service to contribute, we’d love to hear from you!In the weeks leading up to the event, look for us around town selling raffle tickets. They’re just $1 each, and the prizes are incredible—from jewelry and gift cards to family fun baskets and more. On festival day, head to Mary Laveroni Park to grab a bidding paddle and join the fun at the Live Auction. is year’s auction features exciting items such as a backyard pizza oven set (with all the toppings), a case of ne wine, and incredible resort getaways! The 49er Festival marks the ROOFBB organization’s second major fundraiser this year, following a successful SummerFest in June. His client list has included the Pebble Beach Company, Toyota, and Cisco, and his work is carried in National Park stores including Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Crater Lake. But for Marc, photography is about more than prestige—it’s about people and connection. That’s exactly why he donated his time and talent to Southside Community Connections (SCC), helping to highlight SCC’s Wheels and WAVE transportation programs. “I love the Groveland community,” Marc says. “My wife and I have met so many wonderful people here. It’s great to help an organization that supports our community.”Marc and his wife Vanessa split their time between Monterey and Pine Mountain Lake, where her family has had a cabin since the early ’90s. Getting involved with SCC felt like a natural extension of their commitment to the area. “The best part of working with WAVE and Wheels was meeting the people,” Marc adds. “It was a joy to hear their stories and get a glimpse of the community spirit that keeps these programs running.”This is the second time Marc has volunteered his photography services for SCC. His first photo shoot with us was in 2023.The photos will help us in our efforts to get the word out about the WAVE transportation program and encourage more people to volunteer as Wheels drivers. Using photos of real people better connects us to our local community. We’re so grateful to have Marc’s support once again! You can find Marc’s work locally at The Grove Mercantile or online at marchowardphoto.com/shop.
AUGUST PML NEWS 59OUR COMMUNITYOUR COMMUNITYLOOK AT THE VIEW!PASTOR BOB KANDELSTENAYA PARENT ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES FIFTEENTH ANNUAL “STUFF THE BUS” CAMPAIGNWYNETTE HILTON – SUPERINTENDENT BOFGUSD, PRINCIPAL - TENAYA ELEMENTARY SCHOOLGreetings,As I’ve spent this summer surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of God’s handiwork in Yosemite Valley, I’m continually reminded of His design—from the rugged peaks of the mountains to the serene stretch of beaches. But the greatest view of all isn’t a landscape—it’s the incredible display of God’s grace and purpose in our lives.Consider the story Jesus tells in Luke 15:11–32 about the lost son. The younger son boldly tells his father that he wants to find his own purpose—without him. The father, heartbroken but gracious, gives him his inheritance early. O the son goes—skiing through the Rockies, gambling in Las Vegas, and eventually losing everything in the streets of Hollywood. He ends up rummaging through dumpsters, alone, penniless, and broken.en something shifts—he remembers his father. Even his father’s servants have a better life than he now does. He decides to return home, rehearsing a speech of repentance, hoping to be accepted as a servant. But here comes the best view of all: “So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way o, his father saw him and was lled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. e son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’” (Luke 15:20-21/NIV) is is the powerful image of God’s love—a view of forgiveness and transformation through Jesus Christ. But the story doesn’t end there. e older brother hears that his wayward sibling has returned—and he’s furious. He can’t understand why grace is being poured out on someone who squandered so much. “e older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.” (Luke 15:28, NIV) His view of the situation was clouded by judgement and bitterness. So the question is: Which view are we choosing? e one that clings to resentment, or the one that opens its heart to grace? If you’re ready for a fresh view of God’s love, you’re invited to worship with us any Sunday at one of Groveland’s welcoming Christian churches. At Gateway Community Church, we gather every Sunday at 10 a.m.—we’d love to see you there. In Christ’s Service,Pastor Bob KandelsThe Tenaya Parent Association launched the “Stuff the Bus” campaign fifteen years ago to help offset the impact of state budget cuts on classroom resourc-es. Over the years, we have been over-whelmed by the generosity of our com-munity. Last year alone, we collected over $8,000 in school supplies and cash donations. With these contributions, the Tenaya Parent Association was able to purchase essential school supplies for every student at our school, easing the financial burden on families. In partnership with the Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unied School District, we will be collecting school supplies and cash donations on Friday, August 8, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Mary Laveroni Park. Please note: this year’s event will take place on a Friday. Premier Valley Bank has graciously volunteered to place a collec-tion bin in their lobby as well. Suggested school supplies include: pencils, binder pa-per, Sharpies, Crayola crayons, glue sticks, Crayola colored pencils, markers, binders, dry-erase markers, pocket folders, white glue, and highlighters. Many big-box stores oer signicant discounts on school sup-plies at this time of year, making it a great opportunity to give.As many of you know, I retired on June 30. However, this project remains so important to me that I have volun-teered to lead it for another year. You can make a difference in the life of a student! AUGUST PML NEWS 63OUR COMMUNITYCAMP DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I can’t believe how time flies! Camp is more than halfway done for our summer season and we’ve been very busy here at Tuolumne Trails. We started our season hosting a group from United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), followed by three adult sessions and one youth session, and are now hosting family camps. Campers have been busy swimming, fishing, doing tye-dye projects, arts and crafts, panning for gold, shooting arrows, dancing, showing off their talents and enjoying campfire time! Our staff has been incredible working with our campers to ensure that they have a full day of fun. Without the hard work and dedication of our team, this incredible opportunity for our campers would not exist. We are very grateful for the hard work being put in to make Camp Tuolumne Trails thrive. In addition to our staff, we have had incredible support from a number of dedicated volunteers. With our fearless leader Jerry sidelined for a bit, we’ve had several members of the community step up to help. Without their technical expertise and willingness to donate time, we would have been struggling to keep camp running. As a non-profit organization, volunteer support is crucial for success, and our community of volunteers has been incredible! Finally, we are grateful for the amazing work done by Jacqui Montero over the last seven years. After being CTT’s Director of Operations, Jacqui is moving on to further her education, and will be sorely missed. She has done an incredible job keeping camp running since the COVID era, and will continue to be a valuable camp resource serving as a new member of CTT’s Board of Directors. Tuolumne Trails has been fortunate to have her. Thank you, Jacqui!SUMMER PROGRAMSCTT’s first of its eight camp sessions wrapped up in early July. Chris Martin, CAMP TUOLUMNE TRAILSDORI JONESexecutive director of United Cerebral Palsy (Stanislaus County), commented, “Camp UCP was a huge success once again this year! Campers had an incredible time swimming, practicing their aim at the archery range and participating in a variety of activities. UCP has always had a great experience at Camp Tuolumne Trails and this year was no exception! We’re already looking forward to next summer.” A couple of UCP campers also love their time at camp. Megan Franco stated, “I loved camp, my favorite thing was swimming.” Frank Galhano said, “Camp was great, I can’t wait to go back.” This demonstrates the important role and unique experiences, such as arts & crafts, fishing and performing in skits, which CTT provides its campers with disabilities. For most campers, this is the highlight of their year.As CTT wraps up its summer camps, it will be offering Family Camp. This allows 12 families per session that come and camp with their child with disabilities. It’s great for the child but also great for the families to have a vacation, meet other families that share similar life experiences and have respite from their day-to-day routines. SUMMER STAFF SPOTLIGHT: CELEBRATING OUR INCREDIBLE TEAM!Summer is in full swing at Camp Tuolumne Trails, and this season has been one of our best yet—thanks to our incredible seasonal staff! Their dedication and heart are the driving force behind every song, laugh, and unforgettable moment. This month, we’re spotlighting one exceptional team member: Sage. Hailing from Montana, Sage joined us as a Program Lead and Kitchen Liaison. A true Jack of all Trades, Sage brings fresh energy to daily activities, supports the kitchen crew, and leads with charisma as the weekly Master of Ceremonies for campfire and talent show nights.Sage’s creativity, leadership, and warmth have helped make this summer extra special for both campers and staff. We’re beyond grateful to have them as part of the Tuolumne Trails family. Here’s to Sage—and to all the staff who bring the magic of camp to life each and every day!Camp Tuolumne Trails’ mission is devoted to helping those with disabilities and those who support them by providing an accommodating environment for healing, respite, education and recreation. AUGUST PML NEWS 65OUR COMMUNITYTuolumne County has a rich history of film making, dating back to the earliest days of Hollywood. On Saturday, August 2, Tuolumne County Film Commissioner Jerry Day and former commissioner Larry Jensen, will give an account of the many movies and television episodes filmed locally. The event at Standard and Pour Restaurant in Standard at noon is presented by the Cal Alumni Club of Tuolumne County but is open to any interested members of the community. The group welcomes as members graduates of other campuses of the University of California and friends of the university. Persons wishing to attend are asked to make a reservation at calalummotherlode@gmail.com or 925-876-6664 by Wednesday, July 30. Day said more than 300 feature films and television series have been produced in Tuolumne County, including “High Noon,” “Back to the Future III,” and many episodes of “Little House on the Prairie.” Movie makers were first drawn to the county by the wide-open spaces and variety of terrain, Day said. The area soon became a magnet for the industry due to two additional assets---steam engines, “and something else that might surprise you,” Day said. Jensen and Day have spent decades contributing to and documenting this legacy. Each served as Tuolumne County film commissioner, a position that exists in nearly every county in California. Day grew up in and around Columbia. He saw and sometimes participated in film production. Jensen has written several books about Hollywood and the railroads and also wrote an episode of “Little House on the Prairie.” TUOLUMNE COUNTY’S FILM HISTORY JAN JORN-BAIRD
