20ENERGYEFFICIENTTECHNOLOGYWhen it comes to sustainability, the choice of materials matters.Wood is the only natural, renewable, and sustainable material for building and has a lighter carbon footprint than steel or concrete. On average, about 60% of GHG emissions can be reduced by using wood rather than concrete or steel.
21A SMALLERCARBON FOOTPRINTWood stores carbon. Out of all the major building materials, it requires less energy from harvest to transport, manufacturing, installation, main-tenance, and disposal or recycling. Harvesting and replanting increase the carbon sink potential as the rate of sequestration is greater during young, vigorous growth. Active forest management - or forest thinning - mitigates wildfires, cuts carbon emissions, replenishes area waterways, expands wildlife habitat, and creates jobs in rural areas.Maximizing wood used in both residential and commercial construction could remove an estimated 21 million tons of C02 from the atmosphere annually – equal to taking 4.4 million cars off the road. 23NET-ZERO ELIGIBLEINSULATION Thermal envelope refers to the enclosure of the home that shields the inside living space from the outside elements. A tight thermal envelope keeps your home comfortable throughout the year and saves you money by reducing the amount of energy required to heat and cool your home. Timber Block’s patented R-30 or optional R-36 insulating system meets or exceeds North American building code requirements making it a central piece of any High-Performance home.Homes built conventionally, with higher insulation levels are likely to still have holes or gaps in the thermal envelope. These gaps, or thermal bridges, most often occur when insulation becomes compressed orimproperly installed. Timber Block’s proprietary process ensures theinsulation is applied in a factory-controlled environment and consistently maintained throughout the entire height of the wall structure thusminimizing potential voids and loss of energy efficiency.
