A LETTER FROM OURVICE PRESIDENT OFRECRUITMENTDear Potential New Member, Welcome to Panhellenic Recruitment! I’m so excitedyou’re here and giving this experience a chance. Joininga sorority can change your college years in the best way. Going through recruitment and joining a sorority isabout finding real friendships, learning new thingsabout yourself, and growing into the person you’remeant to be.I know this process can feel overwhelming at times. There are a lot of emotions, and that’s completelynormal. My best advice? Be yourself. Don’t worry about anything you’ve heard before or whatyou think it’s supposed to be like. Just focus on findingthe place where you feel comfortable and where youcan see yourself being happy.Whether you have a question, need someone to talk to,or just need a quick pep talk between rounds, pleasedon’t hesitate to reach out to me. No question is toosmall and no feeling is too silly.Best, Regan Lewis

When joining a sorority, finances are an important matterto consider. The financial requirements of membershipvary from chapter to chapter. Typically, costs includemembership dues, a one-time new member fee, andadditional fees specific to each sorority. A full breakdownof these costs will be provided during Round 2 ofrecruitment and is also available on the next page. Our sororities offer flexible payment plans that allow duesto be paid in installments over time. In addition, both thePanhellenic Council and individual sororities offerscholarships to help make membership more accessible. It’s important to understand that sorority dues contributedirectly to your experience. CommonquestionsDo I have to attend every eventon my Recruitment schedule?Yes! Recruitment is designed tohelp you explore the Panhelleniccommunity and get to know eachchapter. Attending all scheduledevents ensures you’re fullyinformed and making the mostof your options. If you skip anevent you were invited towithout an approved excuse, you’ll be removed from therecruitment process. Will everyone receive a bid atthe end of Recruitment? Not necessarily. Recruitment is amutual selection process, whichmeans outcomes vary. Whileparticipating doesn’t guarantee abid, most women who completePrimary Recruitment do end upwith a bid! What if I’m only interested inone sorority?Focusing on just one chapter ora small group of them can limityour opportunities and set youup for disappointment. Weencourage you to keep an openmind, explore every chapter, and base your decisions onyour own experience, not onwhat others think. Can I still go throughRecruitment if I’m not afreshman?Absolutely!

Page 34

Am I required to join a sororityif I go through PrimaryRecruitment? Not at all. Participating inRecruitment gives you the chanceto learn about sorority life anddecide if it’s something you wantto be a part of. There’s noobligation to join a chapter justbecause you go through theprocess. What should I know if I’m alegacy?Panhellenic doesn’t have legacypolicies. Being a legacy does notguarantee an invitation, andyou're not expected to join thatchapter either. Sororities focus ongetting to know each PotentialNew Member and look for a strongpersonal fit. What is sorority life like for off-campus students?About 50% of our communityconsists of commuter students, with an even larger percent livingin off-campus housing. Therereally isn't much of a differenceother than making the time tocommute to and from events thatthe organization may be havingduring theWhat is the new memberprocess like? The new member processdiffers between all sevensororities on campus. In ourchapters here on campus, it isan enjoyable process whereeach individual new memberhas the opportunity to meet thesisters of their chapter, meettheir fellow new members, andlearn more about the historyand values of that chapter. What is the policy on hazing?George Mason University, aswell as all seven PanhellenicSororities on campus, have azero tolerance policy for hazing. What if I am going to beabsent for one of the days? Please let your recruitmentcounselor know duringorientation and she will giveyou a form to fill out.
