Phillip Cordell Brown, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away on July 1,2024. Born on February 9, 1967, in Tacoma, WA, Phillip was the cherished son ofBishop Leo C. Brown, Jr. and the late Annie Benson. He was raised with theloving assistance of Barbara Brown, who also preceded his passing.Phillip's musical talents were showcased when he sang with his siblings invarious groups and choirs as a child. In his later years, he served as a Deacon atTrue Vine Community Church of God In Christ and Better Life Church of God InChrist.Phillip was a graduate of Wilson High School, class of 1985. During his time inhigh school, Phillip excelled athletically. His triumphs on and off the field earnedhim a letter as a member of the varsity wrestling team. Following high school,he served honorably in the United States Army from 1986 to 1990. After hismilitary service, Phillip married his long-time friend, Tammy Taylor, on August18, 1990. Together, they would parent their children, Lauren Brown, JaylundSmith, and Armontae Smith, into adulthood.Phillip's discipline and work ethic were unparalleled and have served him well. Inaddition to his career as a Psychiatric Technician at the Western State Hospitalfrom 1990 to 2003, Phillip was also an entrepreneur, owning and operating hislawn care business. Later, he worked as a Longshoreman and was a proudmember of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 23.Phillip's hard work and sacrifices ensured his family was well cared for andsupported throughout their lives. In his free time, Phillip enjoyed golfing, listening to music, and vacationing inHawaii and the Caribbean Islands with his family. He was known for his senseof humor, quick wit, and the ease with which people could speak with him. Hewas nonjudgmental, hardworking, and self-sacrificing, and he loved his familydearly. Phillip respected people from all walks of life and was always willing tolend a helping hand. He is proceeded in death by his brother, Charlie Ross; his mother, Annie Benson,Missionary Barbara Brown; his sister, Evangelist Debbie Jones; his brother,Evangelist David Brown; his father, Bishop Leo Charles Brown, Jr.; his uncle,Sammy Brown; and his son Armonte Smith. He is survived by his former wifeand lifetime friend Tammy Taylor, as well as his two children, Lauren BrownJaylund Smith, and his siblings, Angie Collins (Henry Collins), Fred Ross, WayneBrown, Steve Ross, Renee Brown, Michael Ross, Anthony Brown (Melannie),Jimmy Fisher (Shawyne) Daniel Brown, Cynthia Fredrick (Leo) a host of aunts,uncles, nieces, and nephews. Phillip will be deeply missed, but his generous spirit will live on in the hearts ofhis friends and family. His legacy of love, hard work, and kindness will beremembered by those who knew him for generations.
