As part of this visit, Mr. Slubowski, along with Loyola Medicine executive team toured our laboratories. As Shawn Vincent, President & CEO, Trinity Health Illinois/Indiana Region has said; " Mike was very impressed with the lab". Even during this short interaction we were able to show how much we care about our patients and, most importantly, that we are good and responsible stewards of our resources. From left to right: Richard Freeman, MD, MBA, FACS, Regional Chief Clinical Officer, Shawn P. She applied for funds to attend ASM Microbe, which is an international microbiology meeting held annually. Jenny provided a brief summary and a few pictures from the meeting:“I had the opportunity to attend the annual American Society for Microbiology conference (ASM Microbe) in Houston, Texas last month. The conference was a great experience and included full days of lectures, discussions, poster sessions, live podcasts, and exhibits. ASM did an incredible job showcasing the latest and emerging research in various sectors of microbiology. There were many interesting presentations on a wide range of topics from emerging infectious diseases to using microorganisms as solutions to climate change. My favorite presentations included topics related to diagnostic mycology, antimicrobial resistance, new therapeutic treatments in the pipeline, and public health. Specifically, I found interest in the presentations that discussed current research on phage therapy. At a glance, phage therapy seems like an optimistic solution to treating MDRO infections, however, I learned that researchers are still working to elucidate the interactions between phages and antibiotics and how this may affect clinical outcomes. I also learned that exposure to specific antibiotics can affect phage phenotypes and have both synergistic and antagonistic effects on phage activity, including phage production and phage resistance. Each presentation was thought-provoking, engaging, and ultimately served as a source of inspiration to continue learning and growing as a microbiologist. Thank you to Dr. Harrington, Erin, and the Schreckenberger Memorial Fund for this wonderful opportunity."

Dr. Haddad will be working with Dr. Barroeta, AP Quality Medical Director, and focusing on projects to improve the turnaround time and documentation for surgical and autopsy reports, to ensure we are following the most recent CAP guidelines for staging summaries, and to provide educational sessions on quality. Dr. Kanakis will be working with Dr. Harrington, CP Quality Medical Director, and focusing on Hospital Education on Laboratory and Pathology Processes Program (Project HELPPP), which is a new interdisciplinary initiative that aims to address challenges to laboratory testing before they happen. The project will work to take an inventory of knowledge gaps in clinical processes, establish a reliable laboratory testing and operations curriculum, and collate pre-and-post data regarding pre-analytical error reduction with the overall goal of improving the understanding of clinical laboratory requests, improving relationships with our clinical colleagues, and increasing effective test utilization and stewardship.Sandra Haddad, MDAP Quality Constantine “Aki” Kanakis, MDCP Quality The application period for the Schreckenberger Fund award is now open. Please see the following announcement information to apply: The Paul Schreckenberger, PhD Memorial Fund Paul C.
