Pathology Free PressPathology Free PressPathology Free PressI would like to introduce Dr. Marina Ivanovic, MD, our new faculty member in Anatomic Pathology who has joined our department.Dr. Ivanovic completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Boston University, where she also completed her fellowship in Cytopathology. She also completed the fellowship in Surgical Pathology at University of Chicago. In 2005, she joined Northwestern University as an Assistant Professor. During that time she held the position of an Associate Director of the Cytopathology Fellowship program and co-director of the FNA clinic. In 2010, she joined University of Iowa as an Associate Professor with clinical practice in general surgical pathology with a focus on thoracic pathology. In order to strengthen an expertise in thoracic pathology, Dr. Ivanovicreceived an additional training at Mayo Clinic, University of Pittsburgh, University of Chicago and Phoenix Children's Hospital. Before joining our department, she was a Clinical Professor and the Director of Thoracic Pathology at the University of Iowa College Of Medicine.During her career, she has authored and co-authored over 50 peer reviewed papers, book chapters and abstracts. She has presented at national and international forums and she was collaborator on numerous research grants.Dr. Ivanovic will be participating in services of surgical pathology, particularly thoracic pathology and head & neck pathology, and cytopathology. She will be extensively involved in teaching of graduate students, residents and fellows and collaborative translational research. We are excited to welcome her to our team!Eva M. Pathology Free PressPathology Free PressPathology Free PressLinkages Uniting the Loyola Department of Pathology and Laboratory MedicineColleagues with the Illinois Society of Pathologists (ISP)The strongly committed missions of the ISP include:•Advocating at the federal, state and local levels for members and all pathologists and trainees on current issues that impact legal and fair reimbursements and the practice of pathology•Providing a community of peers which share best practices, benchmarks and other enrichments to professional lives•Preserving the practice of pathology in Illinois•Collaborating with other organized medical groups such as the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) and the Chicago Pathology Society (CPS)•Communicating with members through Educational Programs, Newsletters and Practice AlertsWhile Dr. DeChristopher transitions from ISP President (2021-2022) to the Past-Presidency, other Departmental colleagues are leaving their "footprints" on ISP activities: •Loyola ISP contributors:Jodi Speiser, MD is a newly-elected BOS MemberRecent out-going Resident BOD Member, Brandon Zelman, DO also served on the Membership Recruitment Committee and the Social Medial WorkgroupConstantine Kanakis, MD, MSc continues as Resident BOD Member and serves on the Social Media WorkgroupSandra Haddad, MD will join as a newly-approved Resident BOD MemberContinued cross-representation of the ISP Board with the CPS (CPS representative, Archana Bargaje, MD [former Loyola Resident and Fellow, [Hines VA]) and the ISMS (ISMS liaison, ISP Past-President, Elena Bourtsos, MD [DuPage Pathology Associates])•Free membership to all Pathology trainees in Illinois• Instituted Resident Member slot to the BOD•Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the ISP has maintained membership at past levels (over 300), including sustaining over 120 Residents-in-Training to membership rolls.•Over the last several years, the ISP Board of Directors (BOD) approved several initiatives to improve networking opportunities.•Is considering expanding its Board from 12 Members to 15 Members.

This Bill, signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, made Illinois the first state in the nation to have covered biomarker testing for insured individuals.•Worked with the Duane Morris legal firm, to successfully educate CIGNA regarding payment structures for coverage of the Professional Component of Clinical Pathology•Co-sponsored with the CPS, a presentation “Advancing Pathology Through Advocacy and Laboratory / Member Programs” provided on April 11, 2022, by speaker Jonathan L. Myles, MD, FCAP, Chair of the CAP Council on Government and Professional Affairs,•Held a Virtual Residents Event entitled “Demystifying Pathology Fellowships: Tips and Tricks on Fellowship Applications” on August 12, 2022, expertly presented by ISP members, Luis Blanco, MD (Northwestern Medicine) and Kruti Maniar, MD (NorthShore Health, Pathology), very well-attended by over 60 participants•Held Advocacy Update “The CAP: Your Professional and Advocacy Home” presented by speaker Assad Joe Saad , MD, FCAP, Governor and Vice Chair-Council on Government and Professional Affairs CAP•Shared in a face-to-face CAP-ISP Reception on October 20, 2022 at CAP Headquarters, Northfield, IL, sponsored by Astra ZenecaAs out-going Past-President of the ISP, I extend a warm welcome to ISP President-Elect Rohit Gupta, MD (Laboratory & Pathology Diagnostics, LLC, Edward Hospital) and the rest of the ISP BOD membership that is poised to continue successful advocacy and networking activities.
