BOYSPETBARNaming your pet is like naming your child…. An important and difficult task. You take many things into consideration when naming your pet from their looks, to their personality and it is important you get it right because you will be calling that name over and over. Naming your pet is essential when you first bring them home as it is easier for them to learn and respond to their name when they are younger.GIRLSCharlieBaileyCooperMaxBearBuddyRockyOscarJackOliverLunaBellaLucyDaisyMollyLolaCocoSadieMollyMaggieTuckerDukeMiloAlfieTeddyDieselBusterOllieArchieLeoSophieStellaRubyTillyWillowLilyRosieFrankiePoppyNala11HERE IS A ROUND-UP OF THE MOST POPULAR PET NAMES:

A German Shepherd named Gunther IV is known as the richest animal in the world and is worth around $372 million. Gunther is a second-generation millionaire canine who inherited money from his father canine (Gunther III) who inherited money from his owner, countess Karlotta Leibenstein. The countess left $106 million to her dog when she passed away in 1991 and trustees invested the money, leaving it to appreciate into the $372 million that Gunther IV owns today. Gunther IV has his own maid, butler, eats caviar daily and owns more than one million-dollar estate believe it or not!PETBARGUNTHER IV$372 MILLIONTHE WORLDS RICHEST PETS15

28WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE THESE TREATS?The year we started Dog Gone Healthy & Kool For Cats was in 2012. The inspiration came from the many sleepless nights looking after our dogs who suffered from stomach complaints and the fact that we struggled to find commercially bought food and treats for them, which wouldn’t irritate their condition.Kool For Cats came approximately a year later after many of our customers and passer-by’s asking us why we didn’t provide healthy treats for cat owners as well.Although I had grown up with cats, at this point we had only our two dogs; however, we were fortunate enough to know someone who owned several cats, and who gave us the challenge to create healthy cat treats that even her fussy cats would enjoy. So, it was all back to the extensive research, until we came up with our small but current range of cat treats, which actually work incredibly well as small dog treats and/or training treats as well.We also wanted to help those pet owners like ourselves, who had spent a great deal of money on treats for their fur-babies, only to find out that the product they bought didn’t alleviate the problem/s and/or were not liked, resulting in sometimes a full packet of treats going straight into the bin. So, we always have samples with us at markets/events and encourage the owner to check with the dog first before they buy.WHAT IS SO ‘HEALTHY’ ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS?All products within the Dog Gone Healthy and Kool for Cats range have been lovingly prepared using fresh, healthy human-grade ingredients which are: Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Contain No Preservatives, Contain No Artificial Colours or Flavours, Contain No added Sugars and Salts.Plus, we also aim to use only free-range and organic ingredients wherever possible, sourced from other local business in our area.DO YOU HAVE ANY DOGS OF YOUR OWN? DID YOU TEST YOUR PRODUCTS ON THEM? We’re fortunate to have two beautiful dogs. Cadbury is a chocolate coloured male ‘Spoodle’ (Cocker Spaniel crossed with Poodle) who is nine years old and such a sweet soul, and Hendrix a black male Bischon Frise crossed with Poodle who is eight years old and definitely the naughty one. Both Cadbury and Hendrix are Dog Gone Healthy’s Quality Control Taste Testers, and all new products must have the approval of the boys (Cab and Hendrix).WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU HAVE LEARNT IN MAKING YOUR PET TREATS?I don’t know whether I’d call it interesting?...... I think the word disturbing would be more appropriate, and that is the use of chemicals and preservatives and additives in many of pet food/treats on the market. Both Steve and I were amazed at how there are no current laws for the entire ingredients to be listed on the packaging for dog treats/food (although I must say, it is definitely improving). This is why we have an information sheet that explains all the ingredients and their benefits in each of our treats, so pet owners can make an informed choice.Every week when we’re out at the markets, we meet more and more pet owners who really care about what they feed their fur-babies, and it’s just wonderful!DO YOU MAKE PRODUCTS FOR OTHER ANIMALS AS WELL?No, just cats and dogs at the moment.Although we have had customers ask us if we would consider making treats for Rabbit and Guinea Pigs.DO YOU THINK IT IS ESSENTIAL TO FEED YOUR PET, SPECIFICALLY HEALTHY TREATS?Yes, of course! We firmly believe they are part of our family and deserve the same quality of food as we ourselves would have.As both Steve and I are coeliac (and have been for some time), we were already aware of the harmful ingredients added to many human food products, eg. Chemicals and preservatives to increase a products shelf life. Added, artificial flavours, salts and sugars or to make it taste nicer. Added artificial colours to make the product look appetising. We’ve also noticed what seems to be an increase in the many, allergies and illnesses, around these days. Not just in humans but in dogs and cats as well and I believe what we are eating or feeding our animals is playing a bit part in this.PETBAR

31WHERE DO YOU CREATE THE PRODUCTS, AND HOW DID YOU LEARN TO DO SO?We bake and dehydrate our treats in our kitchen at home, and our products have been created from extensive research into what ingredients dogs and cats can and cannot consume and what health benefits certain products can bring to them.As previously stated, our boy’s stomach complaints were remedied from the removal of the fore-mentioned additives, preservatives etc. It was no brainer; our treats had to be void of all the nasty stuff and include ingredients which would assist in the health and wellbeing of them. And so, the Dog Gone Healthy & Kool For Cats range of treats was born.DO YOU HAVE A LARGE TEAM WORKING WITH YOU OR IS IT JUST THE TWO OF YOUR WORKING TOGETHER?It’s just the two of us, we’re just a small home-based business, and we sell our products via our website and the local markets and events we attendARE THESE HEALTHY TREATS FOR ALL DOGS/CATS OR ARE THEY SPECIFIC TO PETS THAT HAVE GLUTEN AND WHEAT INTOLERANCES ETC.?Although all our treats are made with gluten and wheat free ingredients and we have treats specified to help with common issues, I’m happy to say they can be enjoyed by all fur-babies who prefer a healthier option.WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR TREATS COMPARED TO ALL OF THE OTHER TYPES OF TREATS OUT THERE?I don’t know that I would say there is anything extra special about our treats; they’re just a healthier option available to Dog and Cat owners who are like-minded when it comes to their fur-babies.We’ve seen the benefit they’ve had on our dogs and wish to share that with fellow pet owners who may be facing a similar situation or are fed up with a lot of the poor-quality pet products out there. We’ve had customers return, and let us know that their dog’s issues, whether it be itchiness, stomach complaints, loss of fur etc. have been alleviated and /or disappeared entirely by using our treats and following a healthy diet. It’s wonderful to know the dog is no longer suffering.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE “FAVOURITE” OF ALL THE PRODUCTS YOU MAKE?Definitely our ‘Variety Pack’ which has a little selection of some of our baked treats:Busters Bad Breath BustersBeno’s Beef & Sweet Potato MeatballsChester’s Chicken and Rice CookiesPookie’s Pumpkin CrunchPugsley’s Turkey Paw Prints This is always a winner for the first-time buyers and the repeat customers alike, as they can see which treat their dog/s like best and /or provide them with an assortment of tastes and health benefits.PETBAR

Designer dogs are the new up and coming trend in the dog world. What is a designer dog you may ask? Well, if you’re behind on the times; designer dogs are a cross between two purebred dogs. A purebred dog is a dog that has been bred across generations, creating dogs that look the same and have the same characteristics as those of the same breed. The benefit in purchasing a purebred dog is the idea that you know exactly what you’re in for. You will know how big they will grow, their characteristics and traits, and their mannerisms. Designer Dogs are essentially a hybrid of purebred dogs, and in many cases, this fusion of dog breeds creates dogs with less genetic problems than those of a purebred hound as the gene pool is mixed. When crossbreeding purebreds, you are essentially entering into your own lucky dip on the characteristics and traits that are going to come from your new dog. This intentional mixing of breeds can also be beneficial for individuals who like the features of two different dogs and want the best of both worlds. So, when do these designer breeds get recognised as a signature breed? Well, for a designer breed to be acknowledged as its own new breed, a kennel club must be established to go on then and evaluate the history and pedigree of the two kinds and then register the breed. How are these designer breeds designed? Well, coming together and breeding two purebred dogs, such as a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, create first-generation mixed dogs. However, this does not constitute a new breed of designer dog. It takes three documented generations of breeding the mixed pup to create a registered breed of designer dog – much like the cross between Cocker Spaniel and Poodle which over time has created one of the most sought-after designer dogs, the ‘Cockapoo’.DESIGNERDOGSPETBAR34PETBAR

Page 37

When it comes to the advantages and disadvantages of owning a designer dog, there is an even spread. The intentional breeding of dogs creates pups that possess the prefect traits for owners. For example, the calm and intelligent nature of the Labrador is a desirable trait for many dog owners. Mixing this with a Standard Poodle, who doesn’t shed too much, creates a dog that is very appealing to down owners. Another benefit of purchasing a designer dog is the idea that the genetics of the dog are usually enhanced through cross-breading. When crossbreeding, the combination of the two purebred gene pools is more likely to strengthen desirable traits and avoid traits that may be unattractive to individuals. In terms of disadvantages of designer dogs, one of the significant demerits is the idea that you don’t know which characteristics of the two dog breeds your dog will possess. This inconsistency may mean that the desirable qualities you were hoping for (like a poodle’s lack of shedding) may not go exactly your way. So, what are the most popular designer dog breeds? The Cockapoo (Poodle x Cocker Spaniel) is one of the most wanted designer dogs, that is considered one of the original designer dogs. Alongside this, the Labradoodle (Standard Poodle x Labrador) is a famous designer dog in terms of its athletic traits mixed with its intelligence. Another original designer dog breed, popular amongst dog owners who are looking for a smaller sized pup is the Puggle (Pug x Beagle). Alongside a vast array of other breeds, designer dogs are the latest and greatest trend in the dog world, and it is a tricky decision for people looking to purchase a dog as if they will be purchasing a purebred or a designer dog. NOT YOUR AVERAGE GROOMERS.42WHEN DID YOU START YOUR GROOMING COMPANY AND HOW DID YOU START UP?My grooming company started organically, I never meant to start a business, it just happened. In 2015 I converted my garage into a grooming studio, and then one of my videos went viral on Instagram, which officially launched Jess Rona Grooming. YOU HAVE DONE SO MUCH SINCE THEN AND REALLY BUILT UP AN EXTENSIVE CLIENT BASE, INCLUDING SOME HIGH-CLASS CELEBS LIKE KATY PERRY, RUBY ROSE AND ZOEY DESCHANEL – HOW DOES IT FEEL TO COME SO FAR AND HAVE SO MANY HIGH-PROFILE CLIENTS! DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD’VE COME THIS FAR? Never in a million years! I never thought grooming in my garage would lead to a person like you interviewing me! It feels incredible, and I pinch myself every day. HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR ANIMALS?I have always loved animals, but I actually grew up with cats! YOU ARE AN INSTAGRAM STAR IN YOUR OWN RIGHT WITH THE FUNNY TRANSFORMATION VIDEOS YOU POST, HOW DO YOU THINK SOCIAL MEDIA HELPED YOU WITH YOUR SUCCESS? It created my success! Word of mouth can only get you so far, but Instagram made my “Celebrity Dog Groomer” status which is bananas to me. DO YOU GROOM CATS AND DOGS, OR FOCUS ON DOGS?I only groom dogs, but Christine, one of my groomers, does cats and we plan to have a Caturday when we open the new location!

WHAT MADE YOU THINK OF STARTING TO CREATE THESE COMEDIC DOG VIDEOS? It just sort of happened. I was blow drying a pekense named Noodle and her ears flew up in the air, and I was listening to a song that timed up perfectly, so I filmed it. It was so fun, I just kept experimenting. HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU THINK COME THROUGH YOUR DOORS PET WEEK? DO YOU HAVE ANY PREREQUISITES IN THE DOGS YOU GROOM?We groom around 30-40 dogs and were still in my garage. When we open the brick and mortar, we hope to do around 90 dogs a week! If dogs are aggressive and require a lot of training, we are unfortunately too small to offer that right now, but other than that any dog is welcome!WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE (FULL GROOM ETC) – WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A FULL GROOM?Every dog that comes to me gets a blueberry facial, argan oil face mask, shampoo, deep conditioner, nails filed, teeth brushed, ears cleaned, full hand dry, and a gorgeous haircut. When I’m feeling feisty I’ll give them a fun accessory from Tokyo. WE SEE THAT YOUR CAREER GOES WAY BEYOND JUST DOG GROOMING – TELL US WHAT ELSE YOU DO! I’m a comedian, improviser, director, and I make my own kombucha! HOW DO YOU THINK THE PET BUSINESS INDUSTRY HAS CHANGED OVER THE PERIOD THAT YOU HAVE WORKED IN IT? It has changed so much! I think that IG and social media has really shined a light on the talent, and the artistry or this industry. The tools and equipment have also evolved so much because there are more groomers than there have ever been before.PETBAR

AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRESUPDATERecently in Australia we have experienced so much devastation from the bushfires – with not only people but millions of animals killed. According to studies and analysis, an estimated total of around 1.25 billion animals have died as a cause of the fires. With over 11.3 million acres of land lost and an estimated 30% of New South Wales’ Koalas lost and some of Australia’s most cherished species are at risk of extinction due to their high death toll due to the fires.PETBARCFA.VIC.GOV.AUCFAVICMAKE A DONATION TODAY61

Page 62

Some statistics detailing the devastation include:•There were more than 140 bushfires burning in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.•3.6 million hectares of land was burned purely in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory – that is greater than the size of Belgium.•1365 homes destroyed in New South Wales and the Australian.•Sydney’s air quality measured 11 times the hazardous level due to the fires (equivalent to 37 cigarettes).•Just in NSW, 1300 houses were destroyed and 8.9 million acres.•Over around 50 million dollars lost per day due to disruption.•Thousands of people and wildlife displaced.•46% bigger than last year’s Brazilian amazon blaze.HOW WOULD YOU SAY THE FIRES IMPACTED NATIVE AUSTRALIAN PLANTS AND WILDLIFE?Over 170 of Victoria’s rare or threatened species have had at least 50 per cent of their habitat burnt. Aerial reconnaissance has shown emerging revegetation in fire affected areas leading to the conclusion of the supplementary feeding program. Teams from Forest Fire Management Victoria are temporarily re-homing native fish, including Macquarie Perch, from the Buffalo River in the state’s north east. More than 7000 livestock have also been lost across the state.HOW BAD HAVE THE 2019/20 BUSHFIRES BEEN IN COMPARISON TO OTHER AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES?The fires this season have burnt over 1.5 million hectares in Victoria. More than 400 residential structures, and more than 650 non-residential structures have been damaged or destroyed by fire. Tragically, 5 lives have also been lost in Victoria. You can find information on other major fires in Victoriaby visiting www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/major-fires.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT FIRE MANAGEMENT?Managing bushfires is an extremely complex task that involves the cooperation of a wide variety of stakeholders including emergency services, government agencies, and local communities. These stakeholders come together to manage major incidents through Incident Control Centres at the local level, Regional Control Centres at the regional level, and the State Control Centre which oversees state wide operations.WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE PEOPLE VOLUNTEERING AND FIGHTING THESE FIRES?Several thousand members have respond to the East Gippsland and North East fires and CFA is incredibly proud of the contribution they have made.The work our members undertake in our communities is crucial to saving lives and protecting people’s homes. CFA members live and work among the communities they protect. They are often recognised leaders in their community. It’s not only during times of crisis that CFA members shine. Our people work hard to prepare communities across the state for dangerous conditions and ensure they are in the best shape to help protect lives and property. All of our members play an important role in delivering and supporting operations, along with their families and employers who support them.AUSTRALIANBUSHFIRESUPDATEPETBAR62

WHO IS FEEDING AND TAKING CARE OF THE ANIMALS SAVED IN THE FIRES?There is a range of public and private organisations dedicated to looking after wildlife from fire-affected regions. One of these is Zoos Victoria, which has set up a dedicated Bushfire Emergency Wildlife Fund. Donations will help fund emergency veterinary assistance and scientific intervention.HOW MANY ANIMALS HAVE DIED AS A RESULT OF THE FIRES AND HOW ARE THE ONES THAT SURVIVED BEING CARED FOR?More than 7000 livestock have been lost across the state. As mentioned above, there is a range of public and private organisations dedicated to looking after wildlife from fire-affected regions. One of these is Zoos Victoria, which has set up a dedicated Bushfire Emergency Wildlife Fund. Donations will help fund emergency veterinary assistance and scientific intervention.ON A PRACTICAL LEVEL, WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO HELP WITH NOT ONLY COMBATTING THE FIRES BUT REBUILDING THE DESTRUCTION CAUSES?Members of the community who live and travel to high-risk bushfire areas along with visitors to Victoria need to stay alert and inform themselves of how they will keep safe in a fire. We ask that they understand the risk to them, how the warnings system works and what they need to do on high-risk bushfire days in the areas they live and work in and travel to.PETBAR63

PETBARWHEN DID THE WILSON RESTAURANT OPEN IN NEW YORK CITY? The Wilson, located on 132 West 27th Street opened in October 2018 as a part of the also dog friendly hotel, INNSIDE by Meliá New york. The restaurant and hotel are located just steps away from the Empire State Building, The High Line, Madison Square Garden, New Hudson Yard and the iconic Macy’s. WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME ‘WILSON’? Well, The Wilson is named after the fabled relationship between a seasoned fisherman and his beloved bulldog, Wilson. WHAT DOES THE WILSON OFFER AS A DOG-FRIENDLY RESTAURANT? The Wilson celebrates its four-legged guests with an Exclusive Dog Menu that includes specially-prepared doggy dishes like a 16 oz Grilled Ribeye Steak, Pan Roasted Salmon, and Grilled Chicken Breast, available on both patios of the split level venue overlooking New York City’s streets. DO YOU GET A LOT OF PEOPLE COMING IN TO DINE WITH THEIR DOG? We most definitely do get quite a few furry guests enjoying our venue. They are here 7 days a week, but it is definitely weekends where we get to see them the most. People love that they get to enjoy being out in the city with their pups, and it doesn’t stop them from having a good meal.ARE DOGS ALLOWED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT OR IS THERE A SPECIFIC DINING AREA FOR THEM?Four-legged friends are allowed on the two outdoor open terraces. HAVE YOU HAD ANY FUNNY EXPERIENCES WITH YOUR FOUR-LEGGED GUESTS? Lots of them. We have celebrity dogs, Instagram Influencers, Westminster competitors, and even held our own Puppy Bowl this year, while showing the Televised one on our big screen TV on the patio. IF YOU COULD USE 1 WORD TO DESCRIBE YOUR JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Neighbour! (We love to feel like our guests are all our neighbours here) WE SEE YOU EVEN PROVIDE DOG CAKES FOR A DESSERT OR A PUP’S BIRTHDAY! WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO THE WILSON TO GIVE THIS SORT OF TREATMENT TO NOT ONLY THEIR HUMAN BUT ALSO THEIR DOG GUESTS?People love their pets like they love their children. We understand that, and we treat them like family too. That is who we are. A family, neighbourhood restaurant.73

TRAVELAGENTSWith all of the technology of today, travelling is so much easier. With the click of 4 buttons you can have a flight booked, so why would you book through a travel agent? Well, when anything goes wrong, and I mean ANYTHING from your flight getting cancelled and all of your accommodation needing to be sorted out, to loosing your luggage - rather than packing on the stress during what is meant to be your ‘holiday time’, you have your own personal fixer at your finger tips that can deal with any issues you may have! Take this for example… It is January and my family and I booked our June holiday to Hawaii, paid for accomodation and were counting down the days until we were there when all of a sudden we get an email from our airline saying that our flight has been delayed to one week later! This opened up the problems of now changing accomodation, moving around work/school and having to add on days to our trip so that we still get the same amount of time in our favourite place. All I am going to say is, thank GOODNESS we booked through a travel agent. One quick call to Kate and she was on the phone to our hotel in Hawaii and sorted out new dates and rooms, spoke to our flight operators to change our flights and by the end of the day our problem that we thought was ‘the end of the world’, was sorted. If that situation were to arise and we hadn’t booked through a travel agent, we wouldn’t have known where to start to sort everything out and make sure our trip went ahead as planned. There are many misconceptions when it comes to using an external company to book your trip and with the modern technology we have today, sometimes it is just more quick and easy to book it yourself with a couple of clicks. But trust me, when it comes down to it and there are problems here and there - having someone else to help your deal with them is much easier than having to figure it our yourself. We spoke to Melbourne Flight Centre travel agent, Kate Dugan about life as a travel agent and the travel industry.PETBARYES OR NO?74

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AS A TRAVEL AGENT AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE JOB?I have been a travel agent for six years now. A good friend of mine referred me who at the time also worked as a travel agent.DO YOU GET A SENSE OF REWARD FROM BEING A TRAVEL AGENT?I really do, I love having the ability to help people and create wonderful relationships.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE HARDEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?It is very important to me that my customers are well taken care of. What really affects me is when I have an unforeseen circumstance arise that creates stress or displeasure for my customer (example: natural disasters/ Insurance related issues/ death). I find that I become incredibly invested personally which can be very consuming.WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PERKS OF YOUR JOB?I have been given many incredible opportunities to travel to some of the most remarkable places in the world.Through my job I have also had the pleasure of meeting some incredible people along the way and there is the obvious perk of being able to help people on a daily basis.I PERSONALLY THINK, THE PLANNING OF THE TRIPS IS ALMOST ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING PARTS OF GOING ON A HOLIDAY – HOW DO YOU GO WITH PLANNING FOR OTHER PEOPLE AND NOT YOURSELF?The planning stage truly is one of the most exciting stages. I love the planning stage with my customers. Having them get excited with my recommendations it such a great feeling. I always love to build rapport, get to know the customer and ask a lot of questions. I will then listen to what they’re requirements are and tailor to their needs. Just as easy as planning my own trip.YOU’RE THE GO TO PERSON WHEN A PROBLEM ARISES FOR SOMEONE WHO IS ON A HOLIDAY AND HAS BOOKED THROUGH A TRAVEL AGENT. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT PRESSURE OF HANDLING ISSUES FOR SOMEONE’S TRIP FROM THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY?It can be very difficult, however I am not one to give up when issues arise, I do whatever needs to be done to rectify the situation. I have had to call tour operatorsat 3.00am due to time difference to resolve an issue, I have had to work until 11.00pm to wait on calls from overseas, I have had to knock on doors of family members here in Australia to advise of an issue that has occurred. It can get difficult, however I love my job and will always go that extra mile to be sure my customers are well looked after If needed. I find this is how you truly show your point of difference as an agent compared to a search engine online.HAVE YOU HAD ANY FUNNY STORIES FROM BEING IN THE BUSINESS?I have had many, you’re constantly laughing in my industry. Most recently, I had one of my dear customers call me frantically from the airport as she thought she had forgotten her passport at home.For over an hour we were retracing her steps only to find she was wearing her passport underneath her clothing in her travel pouch. (Stressful at the time, we laugh about it together now).WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE CHOOSE NOT TO BOOK THROUGH A TRAVEL AGENT?I believe there are multiple reasons why customers choose not to book with an agent one of which being that they have had a bad experience with a travel agent in the past and this has completely turned them off booking through a travel agent ever again. Another one is that online systems are now being very user friendly making booking online straightforward and easy. Also just basic trust as well as the fact that many people have never had to deal with an issue that has caused tremendous stress in their travels and thus haven’t seen the way that we are able to help with issues.WHY DO YOU THINK BOOKING THROUGH A TRAVEL AGENT IS THE WAY TO GO?We know the market, we offer personalised service, show genuine care and are here to alleviate the pressure if things go wrong!WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO TRAVEL TIPS?1. Always refer to smartravller.gov.au prior to your departure.2. Be sure you’re across all visas/ validity of passport/ immunisationrequirements.3. Be sure you know all contact numbers in case of an emergency( example your Travel Agent / Agency 24/7 assistance).4. Be very well across your Travel Insurance T&C.PETBAR76

THE NEW YORKDOG SHOPThe New York Dog Shop is an online store featuring top brands and unique high-quality dog products from clothing to gifts and toys. The online store used to have a physical store in New York, that was even featured in the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua II in 2011 and encountered many celebrities looking for the best products for their fur baby before they closed their doors and now offers their products to thousands of clients across the world because “you don’t have to be a New Yorker to spoil your dog!”. WHEN WAS THE NEW YORK DOG SHOP FIRST OPENED?We have been in business since 2006. We opened our store in New York in 2007, however as of 2015 we have been online only. We still have many of our favourite New York customers as well as those across the country and even many international clients.YOUR SHOP IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST HIGH END FOOD, TOYS, COLLARS, OUTFITS AND ACCESSORIES FOR DOGS - HOW MANY BRANDS DO YOU STOCK? We carry about 20 brands but we are always on alert for new and trending designs and are most proud of our own brand, NYD! We will be introducing some great new items this year in the summer and fall. We do carry some higher end brands but also try to keep a classic assortment with a reasonable price range. WHEN IT COMES TO DOGS IN NEW YORK, WOULD YOU SAY THAT THE CITY IS WELCOMING TO FURRY FRIENDS?New York is one of the most dog friendly cities. Most dogs have their own dog walker and spend lots of time in the park socialising with other dogs and people. It is rare to find a store that won’t allow them in. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR MOST POPULAR ITEM IN STOCK? Although we miss seeing our dog friends every day and being able to offer personalising sizing, we still help with sizes and selecting the best harness or coat for many other the phone.YOU ARE FEATURED IN DISNEY MOVIE, BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA 2! HOW WAS THAT EXPERIENCE? Being in New York, we are often asked to be filmed for movies and TV shows, and of course we have many big celebrities shop with us. Our favourites are the puppies from Beverly Hills Chihuahua II. They came with two handlers and although we were a little concerned that they would be too strict with them, it was actually just the opposite. They had so much fun shopping for clothes and toys, and peeing on the floor like any other puppy would! They were so loved and well taken care of.DO YOU HAVE A DOG OF YOUR OWN? DOES HE/SHE COME TO WORK WITH YOU?I have French Bulldog rescues. They are very high maintenance, so although I would bring them to the store often, it’s difficult to get work done with them. They are like toddlers and need constant attention.PETBAR80

PETBAR86CHAPEL STREET HAS EARNED THE TITLE OF THE FIRST PERMANENTLY PET FRIENDLY SHOPPING PRECINCT IN AUSTRALIA - WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? We know that 65% of Victorian’s have a pet and we understand how important the relationship between humans and animals is, so we rolled out the red carpet for pet owners and their furry friends to enjoy their Chapel Street Precinct experience with them! We want you to bring your furry friends here fur-ever! Now that’s something you can’t do in a shopping centre. HOW MANY VENUES ARE THERE ALONG CHAPEL STREET AND HOW MANY ARE PET FRIENDLY? Over 400 of our venues are now pet-friendly, proudly displaying their ‘pet-friendly’ window sticker on their shop fronts.WAS THIS A GRADUAL DECISION WHEREBY A FEW STORES AT A TIME DECIDED TO BECOME PET FRIENDLY AND OTHERS FOLLOWED, OR WAS THE DECISION MADE COLLECTIVELY AMONG ALL THE BUSINESSES THAT CALL CHAPEL STREET HOME? Many of our local businesses have been pet-friendly for a long time, we wanted to shine a light on this unique point of Chapel Street Precinct by creating the ‘paw-on-the-door’ stickers for local businesses to display if they’re pet-friendly and remove the element of doubt on whether your fur-friend is welcome. Many more businesses then jumped onboard and opened their doors to the paws too!DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESSES TO BE PET-FRIENDLY AND WHY DO YOU THINK THERE IS SUCH A DEMAND FOR IT?Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, yet pet owners are regularly marginalised by landlords, shopping centres and other public venues. In Victoria alone, 65% of households have a furry friend and for those who don’t - 59% admit to wishing they did. Aside from the ‘pawsitive’ impact pets have on our lives, it’s these statistics that cemented the business decision to welcome pets into Chapel Street Precinct’s businesses.AUSTRALIA’S MOST DOG FRIENDLY SHOPPING PRECINCT

Page 87

PETBARPETBAR87CHAPEL STREET IS HOME TO MANY EATERIES, AND WITH AUSTRALIAN LAWS RESTRICTING PETS FROM BEING WITHIN FOOD PREPARATION AREAS, HOW DO THESE BUSINESSES FIND A WAY AROUND IT? Easy, while Australian health regulations prevent animals from entering supermarkets and being within 10m of food consumption or preparation areas, many Chapel Street Precinct eateries have created dog-friendly spaces specifically to comply with these regulations. We have highlighted this by creating ‘pet-friendly - outdoor only’ stickers for these businesses to stick on their window. THIS IS A GROUNDBREAKING STEP FOR ALL OF AUSTRALIA - DO YOU THINK THAT THIS PRECEDENT WILL LEAD TO OTHER BUSINESSES FOLLOWING? Absolutely, we have been approached by various councils and other local communities enquiring about how something like this can be implemented! DO YOU HAVE A DOG OF YOUR OWN? HOW DO YOU THINK THIS WILL IMPACT THE DAY TO DAY LIVES OF PET OWNERS THAT CONSIDER THEIR PET AS ONE OF THEIR MAIN FAMILY MEMBERS? I certainly do. His name is Stormzy and he is a big (40kg) Swiss Shepherd, and I do consider him to be like my child! So being able to bring him basically everywhere I go, be it to meet a friend at a cafe, get my hair done, go shopping, hit the gym or even do my banking, is absolutely life-changing and more importantly supports our local businesses.

PETBARWe take in the ones that are old or ill or otherwise unadoptable.DO YOU HAVE A DOG OF YOUR OWN? DOES HE/SHE INSPIRE YOU IN YOUR WRITING?We have many of our own. I would not say they inspire me, but they do provide comfort.DO YOU BELIEVE YOU USE YOUR WRITING TO SEND MESSAGES AND RAISE AWARENESS OF THE PET/DOG COMMUNITY?I don’t intend to, but hopefully, people will develop an understanding of how rewarding it is to rescue an animal.ONE OF YOUR BEST-SELLERS, ‘DOGTRIPPING’, FOLLOWS A COMPELLING STORY THAT RECOUNTS AN EXPERIENCE IN YOUR LIFE! TELL US A BIT ABOUT THIS AND THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED IN MOVING YOUR FURRY FRIENDS ACROSS THE US.We took 25 dogs on three RV’s from California to Maine. It was a complete fiasco, and I say that despite the fact that it went as well as could be expected. We arrived safely, and the dogs had one great adventure.LESSONS FROM TARA’ IS ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR NOVELS THAT BRINGS US TEARS AND LAUGHTER, HOW MUCH DOES YOUR DOG TARA INSPIRE YOU IN BOTH YOUR WRITING AND VENTURES OF LIFE?The real-life Tara died in 1993. It is because of her that we went into rescue. She changed our lives… and that is understating the case substantially.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN THE MOST ENJOYABLE NOVEL FOR YOU TO WRITE?Probably the first one…” Open and Shut”. I wrote it on a whim and never expected it to get published, so there was absolutely no pressure.WHAT IS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST/WEIRDEST EXPERIENCES YOU HAVE HAD WITH YOUR DOGS?I don’t think I could come close to narrowing it down to one… crazy stuff happens every day.THROUGH THE RELATABLE AND UPLIFTING STORIES ABOUT YOUR LIFE WITH DOGS, YOU CAN CONNECT WITH THE PET COMMUNITY ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. ARE THERE ANY OTHER WAYS YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PET COMMUNITY?I do rescue benefit-signings for local groups all the time. It’s rewarding for me and profitable for them.WHEN AND HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR PASSION FOR WRITING?I’m still waiting. I like writing, and love having written, but I wouldn’t say I have a passion for it. That’s probably because I spent most of my working life as a movie executive, and only starting writing much later.WE NOTICE THAT IN MANY/MOST OF YOUR NOVELS, DOGS ARE A PREVALENT THEME - WHY?Much of my life is wrapped around dogs. My wife and I have rescued 4,000 through our foundation, and we always have between 15 and 30 in our own home.89
