WHY YOU SHOULD ADOPT ASHELTER DOG
However, heading down to your local shelter and adopting the cute little puppy in the corner is also a great idea! There is a tremendous stigma surrounding dog shelters; however, the work done with these shelter dogs is brave and from a place of love.An estimated sum of over one million adoptable cats and dogs are euthanised each year in the U.S., purely because shelters get overcrowded with abandoned pets and there aren’t enough people that look to adopt when it comes to looking for a pet. Adopting a pet means saving the life of an animal that could be facing worse consequences. In many cases, the animals that are found in shelters are healthy, happy and looking for a loving home! Many shelter dogs are put in there not because they have done something bad, but because of reasons like divorce, moving or work. Adopting a pet from a shelter is also much less costly than buying a pet through a breeder. Included in the adoption fee are all the extras that you would be paying for when getting a pet through a breeder. From the costs of getting your pet spayed/neutered to first vaccinations and microchipping! Shelters are run by volunteers and carers, that look after the animals to ensure they are being treated with love and care before they find families of their own. When you adopt a pet, the adoption fee goes back into the shelter and all those dedicated volunteers that help to keep the dogs safe and healthy. So not only are you helping to save lives in adopting a pet, but you are giving back to the community by helping them to continue and save more lives! One of the other many benefits of adopting from a shelter is the contribution you will make in helping to eradicate puppy mills. Running a puppy mill is an illegal custom that involves the breeding of dogs purely for making a profit. The dogs in these puppy farms are often kept in terrible conditions and are forced to continue breeding until they are unable to do so no more, and often, the pups that come out of these mills are the ones you see in pet shops. Adopting a dog from a shelter will help to stop dogs from being products of terrible environments by putting a halt to the funding that we give to these pet shops. Instead, you can purchase your pup through a charitable establishment that prioritises animal wellbeing and safety. Many of the dogs that come from animal shelters are loveable and on the older side of life, and it is proven that adult dogs provide the best companions to individuals. Adopting a shelter dog means that, in many cases, you will be getting a well behaved and trained companion that possesses all of the benefits that come with purchasing a dog. Getting a dog reaps many benefits on one’s health and wellbeing. From the calmness and de-stressing that purely petting a dog can bring, to the ability that dogs possess in being able to lower one’s blood pressure and provide unconditional love to their families.Adopting your pet from an animal shelter is something that doesn’t cross many people’s minds, mainly because it is an underappreciated and undervalued act globally. But consider the thousands of cats and dogs that are abandoned with no family to go home to and the difference you can make to their life by going to a shelter picking out your perfect dog, rather than going to a pet store and funding a harmful business. For more information of adopting a pet through a shelter, contact or visit your local shelter and ask questions about the work they do and the opportunities that are on offer for you.PETBARWhen it comes to finally settling on the decision that you are going to get a dog, many people head straight to breeders to find their perfect pet.11

PETBAR25PIZZAE BIRRAITALIAN FOOD, BEERS AND COCKTAILS!Pizza E Birra is a hip and happening Melbourne restaurant with traditional Italian food and a wide selection of boutique beers and cocktails. Located in the heart of St Kilda, Pizza E Birra is the perfect place to go to grab a classic Italian wood-fired pizza and soak up the sun with your pup by your side. This pet -friendly restaurant is ideal for an affordable and authentic Italian feed and cocktail for both you and your dog!PIZZAEBIRRA.COM.AU
26WHEN DID PIZZA E BIRRA FIRST OPEN AND WERE YOU ALWAYS A PET-FRIENDLY RESTAURANT?Pizza E Birra is an institution and has been around for around 20 years. It was never a pet-friendly business until we took over four years ago. We saw a huge demand for pet-friendly venues in Melbourne and have always welcomed dogs in the outdoor terrace area (which can be heated in winter) as well as our newer beer garden area. DO YOU ALLOW ALL TYPES OF DOGS INTO YOUR RESTAURANT? Yes - all dogs are welcome :)WHY DO YOU THINK BEING PET-FRIENDLY IS SO IMPORTANT FOR A RESTAURANT? We have so many friends with pooches, and they have struggled with places to eat and drink with their dogs. We are proud to offer a menu offering of excellent food and beverages and also be a place where you can bring your best friend. WE SEE YOU ARE OFFERING PET-FRIENDLY COCKTAILS! WHICH COCKTAILS DO YOU HAVE ON OFFER AND WHAT SORTS OF INGREDIENTS DO YOU HAVE IN THEM? We’re currently offering free pet-friendly cocktails, and there are three different options, all of which are served with a delicious doggy treat. The ‘Dogmopolitan’ is a refreshing option for fruit lovers and is made with watermelon, mint and crushed ice. If your pup is into greens, we recommend the ‘Pupjito’ which is a blend of spinach leaves, apple and celery. If chicken is your dog’s weakness, definitely go for the ‘Dogtini’ which is a combination of chicken stock, kale and broccoli.DO YOU HAVE A DOG OF YOUR OWN? DOES HE/SHE COME TO WORK WITH YOU? As much as we absolutely love dogs, we don’t have one. Working in hospitality requires long hours, and we won’t have the time to give it the time it needs. However, we’re grateful to meet and play with all the gorgeous dogs who are brought in by their owners. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE DEMOGRAPHIC FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS THAT BRING THEIR DOGS IN TO DINE WITH THEM? We have customers of all ages bringing in their pooches - from young teenagers, young professionals to the more elderly demographic. We’ve been so lucky to meet so many lovely customers and all different types of dogs. HAVE YOU HAD ANY FUNNY/WEIRD EXPERIENCES WITH YOUR DOG CUSTOMERS THAT COME IN? We love to see that dogs are so comfortable in our environment - they are so well behaved and polite. This means that they must go out to eat with their parents on regular occasions. There is a local pooch (Instagram of the doggie diary: @yuki_stkilda), a small Japanese Spitz who gets very excited when we get our redwood delivered (for our wood-fired pizzas). Yuki always steals a piece of the wood to chew, and we are absolutely smitten! DO YOU BELIEVE THAT ALL RESTAURANTS (IN MELBOURNE) SHOULD BE PET-FRIENDLY? Absolutely. As we mentioned before, dogs should not be left at home alone and missing their parents. Pet-friendly venues bring families closer together and keeps pooches from being lonely.PETBARPIZZA E BIRRA IS INVOLVED IN THE UPCOMING ST KILDA PUPPY PUB CRAWL – SUMMER SERIES!The crawl visits 3 dog-friendly locations for food and cocktails, and it is a perfect opportunity for pet owners to come together and socialise with their pooches – and there are always special treats for dogs along the way! As a part of the St Kilda crawl, Pizza E Birra is a location that is visited. The visit includes pizzas for the parents and delicious pet-friendly gelato for the pooches!

35LADY DINAH’SCATEMPORIUMIN THIS HOUSE THE CAT’S IN CHARGELady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, established in 2014, is the UK’s longest-running Cat Café that allows guests to take a break from busy London life and sit down for a tea or cake with a group of beautiful rescue cats. With an extensive high tea menu and Wonderland themed tea rooms, the emporium transports you to what feels like a magical world full of sweets and cats. Lady Dinah’s not only services the community in allowing people to get up close and personal with the loving animal but pays their dues to the pet community in that the cats inside of the Emporium are rescue animals that are being given a warm and loving home in the café. We were able to speak to employee Abbie about the creation of the cat emporium and how it transformed into one of the most well-known cat cafes in London.LADYDINAHS.COMPETBAR
36PETBARCAT EMPORIUM - WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?The cafe was named Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium after inspiration from Alice’s kitten, Dinah, from Alice in Wonderland. The word emporium describes a retail store, which we are alongside a cat cafe.WHEN DID YOU OPEN YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A CAT EMPORIUM?Lauren, the owner, ran a crowdfunding campaign over Christmas 2012 and that completed in February of 2013. After delays with securing the property, locking down health and safety regulations with the local authority and getting everything set up, the cafe opened in March 2014 .The inspiration to open the Cat Emporium started due to a combination of factors. Lauren had become uncomfortable with the feeling that there was a glass ceiling in her career path, and she was approaching it. After a particularly awful day at work, she petted one of her friendly neighbourhood cats on the street. Unexpectedly, the cat hopped in her lap, and it was such a lovely moment, and Lauren wished she could have a cat. Thinking about how she wasn’t able to have a pet in London, Lauren got to thinking about cat cafes which she knew from a 2009 trip to Japan. With a few enthusiastic responses from friends, Lauren started to think that maybe a cat cafe could work. After reaching out to someone at the Food Standards Agency, Lauren found that there were ways to safely keep animals in a food service business and comply with food safety regulations. From there, Lauren wrote a business plan, registered the woman name and started the process of researching funding in October 2012.WHY DID YOU SPECIFICALLY DECIDE TO FOCUS ON CATS IN YOUR BUSINESS?Lauren’s meeting with the cat after that awful day at work made her realise what relaxing feelings cats could bring on. She was also aware that most people couldn’t have their own cat in London due to landlords being rather strict with tenants owning pets. This way, people could experience the therapeutic effects of the animals and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of a busy city.DO YOU HAVE A CAT OF YOUR OWN? WHAT DO YOU FIND SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE ANIMAL?Lauren owns two cats of her own, both former residents of the Emporium. Donnie had a huge attachment to Lauren from the start and was part of our initial colony; it was a no brainer that when he retired he’d be living with Lauren and former resident Cecil also joined the family. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS CHANGED THE MOST SINCE YOU BEGAN?I would say our knowledge has changed the most since we began. The cafe was envisioned to be a quiet sanctuary with a few walk-in guests daily- we had to learn quickly after crowdfunding made us realise how many people were interested in the concept of a cat cafe. We’ve learnt so much over the years and have put in place many procedures and policies to ensure we’re delivering an exceptional experience while upholding and focusing a great deal on the welfare of the cats. WE SEE THAT YOU OFFER A PET FIRST AID COURSE? WHAT MADE YOU INCLUDE THIS IN YOUR SERVICES?We’re very driven by further knowledge and learning, and we felt our customers echoed this sentiment. The course offers first aid for your pets at home and how to handle a range of medical situations with them, We felt reassured having this knowledge for the staff and felt customers would feel the same knowing they would be equipped to handle situations with their beloved pets. HOW MANY CATS DO YOU HOUSE IN THE EMPORIUM, AND HOW DO THEY GO WITH THE CONSTANT VISITORS?We house 13-17 cats at the Emporium at any time. They get a massive number of visitors, and for this reason, we ensure we close a day each week and host Soothing Sundays sessions where we half the intake of guests, so the cats have some time off. We also build high up shelves so cats can retreat for undisturbed relaxing if they wish. After five years at the Emporium we look to rehome the cats, we monitor their behaviour, faecal charts and health daily to know as quickly as possible if a cat needs rehoming before this point and is no longer happy with cafe life. ARE PEOPLE ABLE TO BRING THEIR OWN CATS FOR HIGH TEA AT THE EMPORIUM?No, we can’t admit cats from outside the colony into the Emporium.WHAT AGE DEMOGRAPHIC ARE YOU APPEALING TO IN OPENING THE EMPORIUM?We didn’t want to appeal to a certain age demographic- we just wanted to appeal to cat lovers who wanted a quiet retreat.

Microchipping your pet is one of the most important things to do in terms of primary caretaking for your pet. In many cases, microchipping your pets is an expense that many pet owners do not pay for and its importance often goes unnoticed. May is officially named ‘Microchip your Pet Month’ as a way to raise global awareness on the importance of microchipping your pet. Microchips are small grain-sized devices that are implanted in your pet as it’s own personal ‘ID’ tag that is imperative for their safety. You may not think that your pet will ever stray from their home, but it is something that happens very often. Research has found that 1 in 3 pets will go missing at some point in their lives and if they do, it is the microchip in your pets back that will help you to find your beloved furry friend. Your pet may have a collar, with a number to call and its name in case it gets lost, and many people believe that this is enough. In many cases, collars and ID tags can get lost or fall off your pet; however, a microchip is a permanent link between you and your pet. Microchipping is a quick and easy process that is well worth it to ensure the safety and security of your pet. The method includes your vet injecting a needle with the microchip beneath your pet’s skin. Treat your pet to some belly rubs and a few treats afterwards, and that’s as easy as recovery gets for this simple needle. For something as easy as this, the benefits you will reap are tremendous and taking the precaution is necessary. Your pet’s microchip gets registered and creates a unique code to identify your pet. This chip is the most dependable way to provide permanent identification of ownership to your pet. From here if your pet is lost, most vet clinics and animal shelters have scanners that can scan a pet for their chip. Only 2% of cats and 22% of dogs that are lost are returned to their owners. A microchip can significantly increase the chances of your pet coming home safe.In most Australian states and territories, microchipping is compulsory for cats and dogs when purchasing them, however, in many places such as the USA, microchipping is not a mandatory practise. When it comes to microchipping your pet, it should ideally be done before purchasing or adopting your pet. If your pet is not microchipped when you purchase/adopt it, it is a good idea to make an appointment at your veterinary clinic straight away.It is essential that once your pet is microchipped, you ensure that you fill out your details correctly and continuously update your details whenever they may change.Registering a microchip can be done in a few easy steps online or at your vet clinic, and the small fee of around $50 (AUD.) is worth it for the protection of your pet. To be a responsible pet parent, you must microchip your pet; for both their sake and yours. A study found that cats with microchips are 20 times more likely to be returned safely in comparison to those who are not microchipped. Similarly, dogs with chips are 2.5 times more likely to be returned safely when lost or stolen than those who are not microchipped. This shows the undeniable importance of microchipping your pet. Microchipping is an important practice to undergo to be a responsible pet owner. It is a simple measure to take as a precaution to ensure that if your pet ever does go missing, the task of finding it and returning him or her safely is much easier and less stressful. If you would like any more information on microchipping your pet, contact your local veterinary clinic.WHY MICROCHIPPINGIS SO IMPORTANT!PETBAR38

While Melissa and her staff lovingly care for their clients “fur babies,” they’re equally focused on finding homes for rescues who are also taken care of full-time at The Wagmor. She does everything you can possibly do to vet them from teeth cleaning to dealing with any medical issues,” says Melissa. Melissa’s soulful connection with all creatures has landed her on TV shows like, Anderson Live and The Doctors as a pet communicator: “I really feel what they’re feeling, and I can see if something is bothering them or hurting them.”WWW.THEWAGMOR.COMTHE WAGMOR LUXURY PET HOTEL & SPAWAGMORPETS

PETBAR45
PETBAR46HOW AND WHEN DID YOU START UP?Well, I have been rescuing pets for 15 years but four years ago, September 1st 2015, is when I actually opened The Wagmor.PET HOTELS AND DAY-CARE FOR PETS IS SUCH AN UP AND COMING INDUSTRY. WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST SINCE YOU BEGAN?I think people are really treating their pets like kids. They no longer want them kept in a cage or kennel. They want them to be comfortable and happy… Safety has always been first, but I feel like over the past five years more and more we see pet parents seeking out places where their animals will be spoiled and pampered.DO YOU ONLY LOOK AFTER DOGS OR DO YOU OFFER YOUR SERVICES TO ALL PETS?At the moment, our day-care and boarding are reserved for dogs… However, we groom cats, GOATS, pigs and we even have several resident birds.YOU OFFER MANY SERVICES FROM GROOMING TO BOARDING - HOW DO YOU MANAGE SO MANY PETS AT ONCE?Our number one concern is safety. So, we have four different areas for the dogs that are vacationing with us. Whether it’s for the day or several nights, we make sure they are in an area where they will have the most fun. For our small dogs, we have a zen den. This is where shy or older dogs go. Sometimes we call it our anti-social, social club. These dogs lounge all day, and we keep them right behind our reception desk. Then we have a small dog play area. This is where our active small dogs and puppies play. We have beds and a pool deck…. these are the energetic ones. Lastly, we have our big dog and private rooms. The big dog area is a large play area that can be divided into two groups if we need too. Then we have several private rooms. These are for dogs that don’t get along with others or that need a break. The only time we separate is to feed. Making sure no food or toys are around unless the dogs are alone is helpful too!!WHICH OF YOUR MANY SERVICES WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST USED?I would say boarding is the most popular. It’s nice for our clients to know their pets are safe while they are out of town. HOW DO YOU SETTLE THE PETS INTO SUCH A NEW AND FOREIGN ENVIRONMENT WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE?We never force a pet into the play area. If they need time to feel safe, we simply give them a private room or take them for a walk. Once they feel safe with us, we let them meet the proper group of dogs.DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN PET? IF SO, HOW DO YOU HAVE TIME TO SPEND TIME WITH HIM/HER WHILE YOU’RE TRYING TO MANAGE SO MANY OTHER ANIMALS?I have ten pets…6 dogs, two goats and two pigs - 3 of them were clients that became mine... They all come to The Wagmor, and they all get plenty of love at home. HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN ELLEN TALKED ABOUT YOU ON HER SHOW? DID THAT CHANGE ANYTHING FOR YOU?Ellen has changed everything. We are really grateful. We have had a huge amount of new clients, and we have had a lot of animals adopted. It’s been great. When Ellen told me she was going to mention us on her show, I actually cried... I was just so happy. This is a labour of love and having support from Ellen and Portia has meant the world to me.WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT WORKING AT THE WAGMOR?THE DOGS!! Actually, I really love creating a place where we can help people with dogs that need extra help. We love all dogs and are one of the only day-cares that take the blind, elderly, sickly etc. It’s so great to hear from people that we helped them be able to keep their dogs. A lot of people don’t know what to do while they are at work or away - We are here to help, and I love that.

THE HEALING POWER OF PETSIt is a well researched and proven fact that pets can heal humans in more ways that one. From being able to reduce stress, to improving mood, to assisting with the elderly, to aiding development, pets can enhance the health and wellbeing of humans in many different ways.Emotional Benefits of pets include a significant increase in mood for an individual and the reducing of stress when in the presence of pets. Research has shown that when people interact with animals, they have an increased level of oxytocin; the hormone that when released, exerts feelings of love and trust. Research has also shown that when it comes to emotional benefits of having a pet, a decrease of cortisol (the stress hormone) occurs as well as increasing levels of dopamine, the hormone that releases happiness. There are many nursing homes, hospitals and health centres around the world that run programs that involve animals as a therapeutic way to calm and bring joy to patients. A similar study amongst a group of women found that doing something as simple as making eye contact with their dogs when they got home from work increased their levels of oxytocin and increased their mood and optimism.PETBAR50

The social benefits that come with pets include a lack of loneliness, comfort, and companionship. A 2013 study on homeless pet guardians found that their animals had saved their life, helping them succumb suicidal thoughts, protecting them from danger and keeping them happy. For all individuals, having a companion by their side reduces any loneliness or isolation that one may feel, and this brings a sense of relief. Taking care of another life as you do with a pet, gives people a sense of purpose, and this brings comfort to individuals. Pets also bring healing power in the way that they can get you through hard times of grief and sadness, in providing warmth and security, and promoting the release in oxytocin. Recent studies have shown that dogs can smell diseases and sense sadness of trauma. Pets have been proven to boost mood and pets can help people through loss and illness. Many physical benefits come with the presence of pets. These include things like a reduced risk for heart issues, lower cholesterol, stress levels and blood pressure. The calming nature that pets bring to individuals, that results in the release of positive hormones and decrease of stress levels create clear physical health benefits for people. A US study discovered that hypertensive patients taking medication for blood pressure, that had pets, had a significantly lower stress level and blood pressure in comparison those that had no pets. As mentioned, the hormone oxytocin relieves headaches, stress and body aches. Research undertaken on a group of people found that people that had never owned a cat were 40% more likely to have a heart attack than those that had owned a cat. Research also found that in terms of illnesses such as Alzheimer’s looking at aquarium fish decreases stress and blood pressure for individuals with limited mobility. The physical benefits of pets also include essential benefits of increased health and fitness. Having a pet, such as a dog, creates more motivation to get up, move and go on walks/runs or out to play with your animal. Many studies focus on the way that pets exponentially benefit the lives of the elderly and people with illnesses; however, there have been many studies that show the extensive benefits that pets have on the growth and development of children. Studies have found that growing up with animals can reduce risks for allergies in later life. Studies also found that having a pet as a teen decreased the likelihood for the child to experience feelings of isolation and loneliness and increases their feelings of more optimism and positivity. Research has recently show that Alzheimer’s patients are reported to have significantly less anxious surges if they are in the presence of an animal. The companionship that pets provide to the elderly is proven to lengthen their lifespan in providing a lifelong friend to love and care for. You can probably notice from your own life if you have a pet, that they can pick up on your mood. Pet owners seemingly find their recovery time to be quicker than others when sick. The comfort and presence of a pet is known to help individuals handle stress better, assisting with the recovery of illnesses.Pets have many benefits for children. Pets provide a loyal and comforting friend for children, which can be crucial in helping them to grow, through the tough periods in growth and adolescence. Research has shown that babies who are surrounded by at least two dogs/cats are significantly less likely to develop allergies than those children that are not living with pets. Recent studies have also shown that those who have pets (including children/young adults) show signs of higher self-esteem and optimism while also reporting less boredom.PETBAR52

Pets help with those people working in high pressure and high-stress jobs, in relaxing and soothing them after a hard day at work. A study showed that stockbrokers that reported to have high blood pressure were compared by blood pressure in stressful situations. The study found that those stockbrokers that adopted a cat or dog had lower blood pressure evaluations than those without pets. It is the way that dogs can inherently understand and react to a person’s feeling or aura that they release that makes them such soothing counterparts in one’s life. A study on autistic children found that the children were calmer when playing with guinea pigs in the classroom. We see many examples globally of class pets for children in primary school and this initiative helps children to settle and compose themselves in a sometimes-stressful learning environment. The same study found that these autistic children also experienced a drop in anxiety levels when playing with the guinea pigs as well as an increase in social interaction and engagement in learning and also interaction with classmates and teachers. Continuing to look along the line of the benefits that pets provide children, a similar study analysed a group of teenagers with type 1 diabetes. The study gave these teens a pet fish to care for twice a day through acts of checking water levels, changing the tank water each week and feeding. When analysing this task against the teen’s blood sugar levels, it was found that this routine of looking after and caring for another life steadied the blood glucose levels of the individuals. Looking at the way that pets benefit the health and wellbeing of individuals finds that being around animals increase levels of hormones in humans that are associated with happiness and good mood. The interaction between a human and their pet creates a sense of wellbeing in the release of serotonin and oxytocin hormones, creating contentment.Through the likes of therapy dogs and animal-related relaxation activities, a pet can reduce stress and create happiness within an individual, and this is why there are so many companies & organisations globally that use pets to assist in stressful situations. For example, many American airports provide therapy dogs that allow individuals to pet and interact with pups before they jump on a flight, to help reduce the stress that may come with flying. A study found that healthcare professionals who spend at least 5 minutes with a therapy dog or around a pet, experience the same reduction of stress levels as those healthcare professionals that spend 20 minutes resting.Pets provide a broad array of healing benefits to one’s mind, body and soul, and there are thousands of studies that prove so. Having a pet provides benefits to not only children but to adults, those with illnesses, the elderly and those in high-pressure jobs. Being in the presence of a pet offers a soothing and comforting feeling and can calm any stress or anxiety that one may be feeling. So rather than taking a calming pill or listening to music, pets are proven to be one of the best relaxants to any human. Pets provide a healing power unlike any other activity or person can deliver to an individual, and you will never experience unconditional love from anyone like you will from your pet.PETBAR55
THE RISING STARS OF2020PETBARWELCOME TO THE WORLD OF PET INFLUENCERSFrom Dogs to Cats to Foxes – pets are a constant talking point across the world. As the digital realm continues to grow, it’s not just everyday bloggers who are enjoying their time in the limelight. Within the last year, there has been a dramatic rise in Pet Influencer Digital Agencies, and it seems pet influencers are here to stay. We gathered up 4 of the biggest pet influencer heavyweights that are taking the world by storm with their cute looks and charming personalities. 56
57
INFLUENCERSBunnies have always been my favourite animals and I have wanted one for my entire life. One day I woke up and decided I need one in my life and went ahead and got one. Best decision I’ve ever made. I made her an Instagram account because I couldn’t stop posting her tiny fluffy cuteness. She slowly started stealing the hearts of many other people worldwide. Her kissing videos and wine glass licking photos went viral and soon enough a lot of people started to follow her journey on Instagram! We’re so glad to have this platform to advocate for rabbits and educate people on how, when treated with love and respect, rabbits can be the most incredible pet companions. We also opened an online store with Blanco inspired merchandise where part of the proceeds go to abandoned bunnies and rabbit rescues.Chewie was an accident/unplanned addition during our trip studying abroad in China. His Instagram was started because he was the cutest thing to us and we wanted to capture all the memories we had with him. He was our first pet, so we treated him like our kid (now he is known as our Pom-Kid). We had no intention his Instagram to grow like it has. It is so rewarding to see how much of an impact he has made on other’s lives from all over the world. How a simple smile and funny pun from his caption can turn any frown upside-down.PETBARBLANCO 114K FOLLOWERSCHEWIE 114K FOLLOWERSBLANCOBUN HI_IM_CHEWIE58
INFLUENCERSMiss Donatella (you can call her Ella!) is a mini brindle French Bulldog from the NYC area. I started her Instagram because I felt like her large personality and funny-but-super-fabulous nature are too special not to share! At first her photos her photos were more generally themed and then over time, as her following grew, they became focused on her signature things: her love of food, travel, and her fashionable style!Ella is currently at 31.8k followers and she recently had a post go viral where she was twinning with her favourite stuffed dragon. She also has her own fashion blog and website. Through Instagram we’ve made so many amazing friends and connections and I am so happy we’ve gotten to share her IG journey with the world! It’s been almost 1 year since I started Teddy’s Instagram profile. At that time, I really had no idea how many pet influencers were out there, not that bunny influencers were “a thing” when I started! I just started the profile for fun and never would have thought that it would grow this big. Part of the reason I started the profile, was because of his special looks. He is such a furry little fluff ball and he has butterfly looking ears, which makes him look more like a pup at times. I think that is why he has gotten so much love and attention from all over the world. When I got Teddy, I had no idea how much work bunnies were. They deserve lots of love, care and space to have a happy life.PETBARELLA 31.8K FOLLOWERSTEDDY 25.9 FOLLOWERSMISSDONATELLATHEFRENCHIE TEDDY_THE_LIONHEAD59

ROMECavalieriVIA ALBERTO CADLOLO, 101, 00136 ROMA RM, ITALYRome Cavalieri is a resort arm of the Waldorf Astoria chain of hotels and resorts. Located 3.9km from St. Peters Basilica and 4.7km from the Piazza Navona, this hotel is perfect for families, couples and pets! This 5-star hotel has its own V.I.P Pet program with services like a spa, dog walkers and special doggy menu. Not only does this luxury hotel provide 5-star treatment for its people, but their pooches as well. We got to talking to Chiara from Rome Cavalieri to ask her some questions about thefur-friendly hotel, and the industry.A WALDORF ASTORIA PET FRIENDLY HOTELROME, ITALYPETBAR62
63
HOW LONG HAS THE ROME CAVALIERI BEEN PET-FRIENDLY?The hotel has always been pet-friendly since opening in 1963, but in recent years we thought it would be a nice touch to create an actual programme to make our four-legged friends feel even more welcome to the Rome Cavalieri.WE SEE THAT CONTESSA IS A DASCHUND THAT CALLS THE ROME CAVALIERI HOME. DOES SHE COME INTO THE HOTEL EVERY DAY AND WHO’S PUP IS SHE?Contessa has been our V.I.P. programme ambassador for some years now, although she is currently not a regular guest.TELL US ABOUT YOUR V.I.P (VERY IMPORTANT PETS) PROGRAM?We wanted to structure what we have always offered to make the hotel welcome more inclusive. Just like we pamper our human guests with welcome amenities and special touches throughout their stay, we use our V.I.P. program to highlight some of these touches for our animal guests also. Whether it’s the water bowl or the special menu with gourmet pet food like we have the 3-star Michelin restaurant for our human guests. It also gives us the opportunity to detail what is allowed and what is not allowed, just as we do with our human guests in our hotel policies.THE V.I.P PROGRAM INCLUDES SERVICES LIKE A SPECIAL DOG MENU, DOG WALKERS AND A DOGGY SPA - WHY DO YOU THINK PROVIDING ALL THESE SERVICES IS ESSENTIAL FOR DOG OWNERS COMING TO YOUR HOTEL?A dog is more than just a pet and we want owners to know that we understand this and have created a series of experiences that are very similar to what we offer owners such as access to a spa, a special menu and much more.PET-FRIENDLY HOTELS ARE UP AND COMING; HOWEVER, THERE ARE STILL SO MANY HOTELS THAT DO NOT ALLOW PETS. WHY DO YOU THINK ALL HOTELS SHOULD BE PET-FRIENDLY?Pets are part of the family and offer so much in terms of love and affection to their owners – they are part of what makes a home so comfy. A hotel is supposed to be a home away from home, so why would deny entry to a family member?WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IN THE HOTEL BUSINESS IN TERMS OF PETS?Certainly, the numbers of services and experiences offered. There used to be really only a bowl; now you can find gourmet snacks and cashmere beds.DO YOU THINK THAT THE INCLUSION OF PETS IS PART OF THE TYPICAL ITALIAN CULTURE?More and more pets are becoming central to many Italian families, although to be honest Italy has always been a very pet-friendly culture.AS PART OF THE WALDORF ASTORIA HOTEL CHAIN, ARE ALL OF THE HOTELS PART OF THIS CHAIN PET-FRIENDLY?We have added several iconic properties recently so you would have to check with our headquarters, but we are all pet-friendly in varying degrees.64
PETBAR65
PETBAR66
HOW MANY ROOMS IN THE HOTEL ARE PET-FRIENDLY?All of our rooms and suites are pet-friendly.DID YOU FACE ANY OBSTACLES IN BECOMING A PET-FRIENDLY HOTEL?Since opening, the hotel was open to pets, so there wasn’t a specific date in which we switched on the welcome sign – we have always welcomed pets in one way or another.HAS THERE BEEN A HIGHLIGHT OR FUNNY MEMORY THAT YOU RECALL IN TERMS OF DOGS IN THE HOTEL?We are certain that if you called up a few of our past Concierges for details you would have plenty of material, but one anecdote that comes to mind was related to us by Guest Relations when a few years ago a special dog house was built and soundproofed by our engineering staff so that a dog would not get scared by the fireworks ordered by the owner to celebrate their birthday in one of our suites.ROMECAVALIERI.COMROMECAVALIERI67

Another great thing about the Park is, you don’t need to leave your dog behind! The Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is a well-loved area home to fantastic seafood and many other surrounding cafés and restaurants. The Little Creatures brewery also calls Fremantle home which allows you to go inside the brewery and take a tour of the fantastic mechanics involved in the making of Little Creatures beer.
PETBAR79WHERE TO EATNobuCROWN METROPOL PERTH, GREAT EASTERN HWY, BURSWOOD WANobu at Crown Perth is truly a restaurant worth visiting if you’re in Perth, but bookings are a must as it is a dinner hotspot for many people. Although there are non-seafood options, if you aren’t into fish, I probably wouldn’t recommend Nobu as seafood is there speciality. In saying this, purely the upper-class atmosphere and twist on traditional Japanese cuisines is a pulling point. Best time to go: Nobu is excellent for both lunch and dinner, but I recommend making a booking for 7 pm for one of the most delicious Japanese fusion dinners of your life. Our recommended drink: The Japanese Mule is part of Nobu’s menu of signature cocktails. If you love a good cocktail but are not a fan of sweet flavours, this Sake infused drink is perfect for you. Combining the flavours of ginger beer and orange bitters with Nobu Rocks distilled sake and lemongrass, the bitter but citrus drink is beautiful to have with your meal. Our recommended meal: In terms of the sashimi, it is some of the freshest and most delicious that I have ever tasted. The Kingfish marinated in citrus and soy with a thin slice of jalapeno packs a punch and is an explosion of flavours. The cauliflower is another dish that is full of flavour and brings a basic vegetable to a whole new level. Cooked to perfection, served in a cast-iron dish so that it continues to cook when it is brought out to you, the jalapeno sauce topping the veggie is delicious.

Best time to go: The brewery is so big, and there is so much to look at that you could spend the whole day here! I recommend going at around 1 pm and allowing time to walk around the brewery, take a tour, hire a bike or enjoy the scenery, and then making a booking for dinner so that you get to have a taste of the freshly cooked produce of the brewery. Our recommended meal: If you’re a meat lover, the slow-cooked brisket is the main meal to get. I am a meat eater who enjoys his brisket and rate my experience based not only on the combination of herbs and spices used to cook this dish but the rate in which the brisket melts in your mouth…. Great work Little Creatures – 10/10!!!Our recommended drink: $25 Beer tasting tray – yes, please! PETBAR85WHERE TO EATKyomi1, LOBBY LEVEL THE STAR GOLD COAST, CASINO DR, BROADBEACHIf you are looking to enjoy some modern Japanese cuisine, including a great atmosphere and service, then I would suggest Kiyomi Restaurant at The Star. For a taste of all the chef’s favourites, I recommend the pre-set Chefs selection menu for a minimum of 2 diners. This menu gives you a feeling of all the little goodies Modern Japanese has to offer. With mouth-watering sashimi and freshly shaken cocktails, Kyomi gives you a taste of Tokyo without the overnight flight. The best time to go: I recommend heading to Kyomi any night for dinner, but make a booking because it fills up very quickly! Our recommended dish: With some of the best Japanese food I have ever tasted, choosing the best meal is difficult. If you love meat, I recommend the Lamb cutlet, hatcho miso and corn. The tenderness of every dish is fantastic. This Lamb cutlet presented with corn is a nice combination – Wagu +7 Tenderloin (160g), Kale, Smoked eel, Kombu Jus. When they say “it melts in your mouth” I think people must be talking about this dish. It literally hits the tongue and melts in your mouth. Every morsel of this dish leaves you wanting more. If you’re a sushi lover, I also recommend the 6-piece chef’s selection. Of course, raw fish isn’t to everyone’s liking, but I think it’s all about the quality of the product being used as well as the perfect thickness of each slice; not too thick and not too thin. I like to mix a touch of Wasabi into my Soy sauce and KAPOW! Dip that sushi in there and enjoy.

PETBAR90WHAT TO DOFITNESS HELLS GATES HIKEHell’s Gates is a popular coastal hike in Noosa heads, with a trail leading up to a scenic cliff. Hell’s Gates is around a 5.2km round trip from Noosa National Park entrance to Sunshine Beach (the end of the track0 hike so allow at least 2 hours so that you can enjoy the lookout stops along the way. About 1km into the hike is ‘Dolphin Point’ a great lookout spot for turtle, whale and dolphin sightings. Once you reach Hell’s Gates, you will be pleasured with amazing views of the coast, and it is well worth the walk. I recommend the private sunset cruise that allows you to witness the majestic sky from on the water. PETBAR102Zagame’s House is one of the few dog friendly hotels in Melbourne that goes above and beyond with their services and outreach to the pet community. We got the chance to talk to Adam and Victor from Zagame’s House to discuss why they went ‘fur-friendly’ and what its like working in a hotel where you can include dogs in your customer base!
PETBAR103WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO GO ‘FUR FRIENDLY’?A selfish reason really – I want to be able to take Hugo, my Groodle, to work. Well, that and the fact that Zagame’s House is just that, a House. A House is only a Home when a family lives there. It gives it soul. A family is not complete without a dog. If you can live with your dog in your home, then why can’t you bring them to our House?HOW MANY PET FRIENDLY ROOMS DO YOU HAVE ON OFFER?We will launch with six ‘fur-friendly’ rooms. These are in our spacious Corner Rooms that give you all that extra space to stretch your legs – all 12 of them, if you have 2 dogs and a partner that is!WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FUR FRIENDLY ROOM AND A REGULAR ROOM IN ZAGAME’S HOUSE?The Corner Rooms have more space for guests that want to stretch out. They also have 12 bottles of hand-selected wines to enjoy from our wide range at Lord Lygon, our residential Wine Shop and Bar.YOU OFFER SO MANY PET SERVICES LIKE GROOMING AND DOG WALKING – WHY ADD THESE EXTRA AMENITIES?The philosophy around our Fur-Friendly offering isn’t simply an announcement of an in-room menu. We will strive to add as many features to the fur-babies experience here at Zagame’s House that match what our humans can access. These include fur-sitting, personal puppy trainer, a selection of in-room movies that are free for all guests on 55” screens will be for that market (Hugo loves Santa Paws 2 – he watches it nearly every day, yet he still seems surprised by the ending!), in-room menu, social time with Hugo (who will be on-site earning his pay as the face of Zagame’s House fur-friendly offering), discounts at stylish salons, a map of the local area with all the ‘must-poo’, sorry, must ‘do’ list of places to explore, and many more. Who lets someone into their home and dictates they cannot be left alone? At least we offer services such as fur-sitting so all guests can enjoy their stay.ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT PETS DESTROYING/RUINING THE FURNITURE IN THE ROOMS?I have worked in hotels for over 20 years. I am more worried about their parents!DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS OF YOUR OWN?Did I mention Hugo, my Groodle?HOW FAR WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO IN YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE PET INDUSTRY? WOULD YOU LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE MORE?As a society, I believe Australia is very behind in a lot of attitudes towards pets - dogs particularly. Statistics show the majority of people own pets. Dogs mostly. They are described as man’s best friend. They sleep in our beds. Protect our homes. Kiss us on the lips. Yet, if you go out in many places in many cities, you are not made to feel welcome at all. They do all this for the majority of our society – yet we think a dog hair in our smashed avocado will kill us! Melbourne is more progressive in social and living attitudes – at least compared to QLD where I have lived and also my home town of Sydney. If you look at the US and Europe – people have been traveling with dogs for decades in planes, trains and automobiles. What we are doing is not revolutionary – it is simply playing catch up. So this is the first step – acceptance that we CAN stay in a hotel and be assured that dogs that do not kill at home, will not kill you in a hotel room. Like any ‘revolution’ it will catch on, society will get over it and it will become the norm. We can then truly focus at the local café on the issue of Home Owning vs Eating the Smashed Avo with dog hair in it every day.Seriously though, we will do whatever we can to promote this as positive. A report last week claims that owning a dog is a good way to increase life expectancy. To me that is common sense! Zagame’s House is about being located in suburbs, not necessarily cities. Due to this we are always looking for ways to promote and support our local communities. The Lost Dogs’ home is located in North Melbourne, five minutes from here. When people talk about supporting local disadvantaged groups – why does no one think of the dogs? To me that is the first thing I think about. To start with, all bookings made at Zagame’s House for our Fur-Friendly rooms will see $10 donated to The Lost Dogs’ Home. The cost of maintaining food alone to these homeless hounds is not a small amount. That is first and foremost. Moving on from there we will work on several regular and ad-hoc activities that will hopefully benefit the whole community and bring more fur-babies to family and friends around us.WHAT SORT OF DEMOGRAPHIC OF CLIENTS ARE YOU EXPECTING TO COME WITH THEIR FURRY FRIENDS?Fur-love knows no limits! Love of this kind knows no social, financial, sex or age bounds. As there are so few hotels in Melbourne that allow pets I do believe we will appeal to a wide range of Australians. The commonality is love. Furry, puppy love! Clearly though they will have good taste in design, wine and food – after puppies, that is all we are about!

TOP TIPS FORTRAININGYOUR DOG106
Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, and you may want to spend your time playing and cuddling it, however, you must get straight onto training him/her. Training your pet pup is much easier when they are young and excitable. This is why, for the sake of your carpet or new shoes, it is a smart idea to get to training your new pet straight away. There are many training schools and classes that you can take your pet to, which will also allow them to learn social skills and how to be around other dogs. However, you can train your Dog just as well in your own home.TEACH YOUR DOG THEIR NAMEIt is important to say your Dog’s name as much as you can as soon as they come home so that they understand that it’s their name and learn how to respond to it. By continually calling their name, your pup will be able to recognise and react to their name. When your Dog recognises their name, give them treats and pat them as a way to praise them for their response (you should do this every time they do something right while training them!).HANDS-ON TRAININGWhen teaching your Dog to sit and lay down, it is essential to get involved with your Dog and physically teach them the movements. While it is also necessary to vocally instruct your Dog so that they understand the command, you must get physical. This may involve teaching your Dog to sit by gently tapping their bottom down to teach them the command. In doing so, it is important to praise your Dog and reward them for their excellent behaviour as it is the key to learning! When it comes to teaching your Dog to lay down, if you get them in a sitting position, place a treat in your hand in front of them and glide it across the floor. It may take a few tries, but eventually, your Dog will be sliding down!REPRIMAND BAD BEHAVIOURBy reprimanding your Dog when they do something wrong, it teaches them both discipline and the difference between right and wrong. I know it may seem harsh as they are just learning; however, it is a necessary technique in allowing your Dog to understand lousy behaviour. This may mean gently tapping your pup on the nose, raising your voice or letting him or her outside and excluding them from your attention.TEACHING YOUR DOG TO WALK ON A LEASHPutting your Dog on a lead for the first time is a different and usually stressful experience for them. If your Dog does not enjoy the feeling of being pulled or controlled by a lead by their collar, I suggest putting your Dog in a harness which may be more comforting for them. When getting your Dog ready for their first walk, put their lead on inside and walk around the house. This allows your Dog to get used to the activity in a comfortable and safe environment. When you notice them comfortably walking around on the lead, take them outside.TOILET TRAININGToilet training your Dog is easier than it may seem but remember that there is sure to be a few slip-ups, so be ready to clean! One important thing to remember is to always bring your Dog to the same spot where you want them to go to the toilet. Whether it is on a puppy pad, or taking them to a place outside, you must be consistent with your training. It is also essential to ensure you are taking your Dog to a specific spot to go to the toilet every 30 minutes at least so that they get used to going when they please, as well as ensuring that you keep the ‘mistakes’ to a minimum.PETBAR107
