THE POWER OF DOGTA I N E R S Eagerly awaiting the arrival of her new pup from a Corgi breeder in Newcastle Brisbane based Nicki Eggie faced a dilemma How on earth was she supposed to bring her new puppy home With a little help from Dogtainers Nicki and Maple were united at last Read her story below FINDING MY PUP As any Corgi owner would know finding my pup was a very lengthy process they re just so hard to come by Living in Brisbane I began my search for a registered breeder but I had no luck so I soon expanded my search Australia wide When I finally got a response from a breeder in Newcastle New South Wales I got so excited that I immediately offered to drive down to pick her up despite the nine hour travel time You see I thought that this was the more desirable option and wanted to show the breeder that I was ready to be a caring fur mum The breeder gave me a call the following day and told me that she would be happy to sell me the pup but nothing was mentioned about transport at this stage TO DRIVE OR NOT TO DRIVE As I began planning my trip to Newcastle it became very apparent that it would not be as straightforward as I thought If I drove down very early in the morning picked her up and headed back on the same day I d be looking at a round trip of about 18 hours so that was quickly ruled out The second option was to drive down and stay overnight but with hotel and fuel costs I d be looking at around 250 in addition to 2 full days of travel The third option was to fly down and rent a car for the drive back to Brisbane however with the costs of flights and car hire I was looking at approximately 500 not to mention a full day of travel for not only me but my new pup as well The fourth option was to fly my pup up on her own to meet me but this made me nervous I had so many questions and a lingering thought that this would make me a terrible dog mum So I asked the breeder for her opinion I was almost expecting her to scold me at the mere suggestion of not making the trip to retrieve my darling pup but was instead very surprised by her response which was Hi Nikki Yes much better for the puppy to fly She went on to explain that a 9 hour car ride isn t all that easy for an 8 week old puppy and in fact she d advise against it Here I was worried for nothing I was so caught up in the stigma that flying a puppy was less desirable than driving that I didn t consider flying as an appropriate method of transport 10 By Nikki Leah Eggie As a member of a few online dog groups I found that there were others who had just as many questions as I did regarding flying and its effect on the dog s psyche and temperament Thankfully there were several other breeders who also recommended flying as their preferred method of dog transportation CHOOSING A PET TRANSPORT CARRIER Well that settled that Now I just had to decide which pet carrier to book As always a bit of online research goes a long way I checked out the websites reviews and testimonials of Australian pet transport companies and got a better sense of what each company valued and how they operated THE QUOTE To get an idea of costs most carriers ask you to select a crate size If you re purchasing a pet from another state selecting the right size can be tricky if you don t have the correct measurements I found Dogtainers travel crate size calculator handy because they happily select a size for you based on the breed and weight of your dog Dogtainers also had an FAQ section which was very helpful A few pet carriers provided an instant quote which was great but when I submitted my quote through Dogtainers I received a personalised

Page 13

email the following day from an actual human not an automated machine The two page quote was very detailed and listed my crate size flight time costs and even different pet transit plans I especially adored the part about the additional services offered including a comfort stop hydro bath and pet pack When I saw the lengthy quote listing all the inclusions and additional extras I prepared myself for the price but surprisingly it was very reasonable CUSTOMER SERVICE I m someone who places a lot of importance on the customer service I receive Of all the quotes I requested online only Dogtainers called me the following week to ask if I had any questions about their services This gave me an opportunity to ask all of the questions I hadn t found an answer to yet and the lovely lady I spoke with on the phone put all my worries at ease The follow up phone call really made the whole process feel much more personal and I truly believed that they had the safety and well being of my puppy at heart HEAD AND PAWS ABOVE THE REST For me Dogtainers was the most suitable option The way that they spoke about my pet and my options really made me feel like the company had a personal investment in making sure my dog would be completely safe They went above and beyond with their quote and it was tailored and personalised not just an automated email response It had an incredible amount of detail in it and anything that wasn t answered in the pet transit plan was answered during the follow up phone call they conducted the following week I felt at ease trusting them with my new little puppy MY KEY TAKEAWAYS 1 Make sure your pet has been health checked and has been cleared by a vet to fly 2 Exercise your pet and give them plenty of attention water and toilet opportunities before they fly 3 Do not sedate your pup before travel 4 Contact the carrier and ask if you can send your pet up with a toy I had my dog breeder send Maple up with a toy that smelled like her mum so she felt a little more at ease Dogtainers encouraged me to do this but did let me know that sometimes dogs can soil themselves so it might not be salvaged if this happens 5 Ask how the company intends to update you if there is a delay in the flight I ve read many reviews about anxious clients waiting for their pet that was due to arrive an hour ago but were not updated about the delay 6 Ask about the meeting point and parking Dogtainers sent me a map of the location and told me that there was a free parking bay at pick up 7 Make sure you have a crate or some sort of restraint for your pet for the car ride home 11

PET PROOFING YOUR HOME THEY MIGHT ONLY BE HERE FOR PART OF YOUR LIFE BUT FOR THEM YOU ARE THEIR WHOLE LIFE THIS PRETTY MUCH SUMS IT ALL UP P ets quickly become part of the family and regardless of whether you adopt them at a young age or when they are more mature it is important that you ensure you are adequately caring for your new fur friend This means feeding them walking them caring for them and protecting them by making sure your home environment is safe and pet friendly This not only ensures that they are safe at all times whether you are home or not but it also gives you peace of mind So here are some tips and tricks protecting you your family your pet and your home 16

Page 19

FENCING Fencing is the most important pet proofing method you can install in your home Before purchasing a pet make sure that you have a strong stable fence built that is surrounding your property This is mainly for your pets safety so they don t run out onto the street or try to play in the neighbour s yard and cats are curious creatures so by ensuring your balcony secure you are preventing your pets from injuring themselves Pet proofing is virtually the same as child proofing so always ask yourself if I had a child what would I do FLOORING REMOVE YOUR CLUTTER Pets are just like people They are very curious beings If you keep your favourite sneakers out an open packet of chips on the kitchen counter or your freshly folded laundry on the couch you are pretty much asking for trouble Try and pack away as much clutter as possible to avoid your pets attacking your belongings It is in their nature to play and be active so they don t know any better which is why it is your responsibility to ensure your home is clutter free Depending on the age and breed of your pet you might find that items such as photo frames and car keys might also need to be kept away from them To keep your pet safe you should install flooring that isn t slippery so your fur friends can t slip and potentially injure themselves Anti skid flooring vinyl laminate stone tiles concrete polyurethane finished wood linoleum flooring and hardwood are all products that are pet friendly Carpeting is also a great alternative that does require a bit more maintenance but looks fantastic If you want to increase the aesthetic qualities of your home and your pets comfort then you might also consider purchasing area rugs VACUUM CLEANER FABRIC SELECTION Anything delicate forget about it Silk linen velvet or anything with buttons will most likely become dirty or damaged by your pet These fabrics are also a magnet for pet hair So if you keep your pet indoors it might be best to opt for fabrics such as dark leather or a synthetic that can t easily be damaged Buttons might also be dangerous because particular breeds of cats and some more energetic breeds of dogs might mistake these for toys PET RETREAT If you create a space in your home for your pet where they can play with their toys and have somewhere comfortable to lay this will reduce the risks of them running around the house and playing with your furniture You could keep their toys in a little hamper and make sure the area is comfortable and entertaining enough for them that they won t want to rummage through your belongings BALCONY If you have a balcony in your home make sure that you install bars screens or fibreglass windows to protect your pets Dogs A strong suction in your vacuum cleaner is vital Regardless of the type of flooring you have or the decor and furniture you own pets shed hair So having a strong vacuum cleaner is vital for you and your family s health and for the cleanliness of your home GROOMING Keeping on top of your pets grooming is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your home pet proof as well as clean and tidy at all times Regular baths and nail trimming will prevent your furniture from being scratched or damaged FLOWERS Flowers are not the first thing that come to mind when people discuss pet proofing their home But in actual fact certain types of flowers can be toxic to your new fur friend Daffodils for example can give your dog a rash or cause vomiting and illness Plant and lawn fertilisers can also make your pet very ill Try and remove all gardens tools out of sight reduce the use of garden chemicals and eliminate harmful plants from your garden to keep your pet safe and protected when playing in the yard 17

FEATURE HUDS AND TOKE Meet Russell and Emma Gibbons the founders of Huds and Toke What made you start Huds and Toke My husband and I had always wanted to create a well established and respected business both domestically and internationally We also wanted to have the brand connected to high quality premium Australian made products We have both had experience in creating products and really wanted to design a business with products which we as a team have created ourselves in house and then brand these products and offer them to the world I enjoy being creative and love being my own boss So after conducting thorough research and combined with my love of animals I decided that the pet industry was a great place for us to start With all this in mind we established Huds and Toke and set up a factory where we design create and manufacture our products 18

Have you always been passionate about pets and in particular making pet treats For as long as I can remember I have been passionate about animals and in particular I have been crazy about dogs and horses It has been my life s mission to somehow work with animals I believe that pet treats as a whole is a super positive and fun component of the pet industry Each and every Huds and Tokes treat is made with lots of love and passion which are two values we pride our business on Describe your affiliation with Smart Pups We help support a number of charities which include Smart Pups We also support the USC Detection Dog programme as well With regards to Smart Pups we supply them with dog treats to help train their puppies As a family we have also had a foster puppy and this was an experience which really helped us understand the great lengths one must go through in order to train an assistant dog From a horse perspective we also support many pony clubs equestrian clubs and competitions Australia wide What do you love most about your job What opportunities and awards have you received since starting your business As a business we have received a few awards not by chance I might add as it has been a very difficult journey to get to where we are today But it is so nice to receive acknowledgement from your business peers Thus far we have won the Innovation Pitch award at the University of Sunshine Coast Business of the Year award on the Sunshine Coast Business Woman of the Year award as well as a Business of the Future award from Westpac Bank Being a woman in business is certainly challenging but there has never been a better time for us to strive to achieve I thoroughly enjoy building and executing concepts on a daily basis I also get so much joy out of seeing products which myself and my team have created in our factory here on the Sunshine Coast being enjoyed in far flung places in Australia as well as in Japan and soon to be the USA It s awesome to think that us Australian women are making products that are world class and ones that are being recognised globally Where do you see your business in 5 years time This is an exciting question but also a very difficult one We have had such a massive journey from starting at our kitchen table 5 years ago to where we are today It is hard to believe where we are now let alone imagine where we could be in another 5 years time But we have a long term plan and one which entails growth and transformation Suffice to say Huds and Toke will be a very well known brand not only in Australia but in Japan and the USA We already sell products in Japan on a regular basis and are currently expanding into the US this year So there are some really exciting opportunities for us and we are working extremely hard to put our plans into action It s hard running your own business but I love the challenge and I love being my own boss What do you think it means to be a pet owner A pet owner is one who sees themselves as a custodian of another remarkable soul I believe it is our duty to treat these animals regardless of what they are with respect and love and to include them into our family If we do that they give us back so many great things Having a pet keeps one healthy both physically and spiritually Because put simply pets are a gift 19

NERVOUS HORSE HOW DO I MANAGE A FEATURE Written by Russell Gibbons Here are 7 things to keep in mind that will assist you when dealing with a nervous horse I remember when I would ride a pony around my uncle s property when I was very young Every time I got on this pony it would bolt for the open gate and leave me to hang on for dear life It even threw me in the air several times The horse would stop at our gate I would go through it Then it would turn around and promptly trot home without me and I would meander back whilst everyone had a giggle to themselves My dad would say what happened mate And I would reply ever so wittingly you saw me fall off again To that he would say that pony seems nervous around you son But I couldn t understand why this pony was so nervous around me I still have dreams to this day about it In fact they are pleasant thoughts because it was a fun tussle between me and that pony even though it won in the end But now being a mature adult I look back and think it wasn t the horse s fault it was me I was nervous which in turn made the pony nervous 24 So with this in mind I thought I would do a bit of research and find out what some of the causes and remedies are for a nervous or anxious horse

Page 27

Below are my findings 1 You the rider is nervous We know from scientific studies that horses can Simply exercising more often and increasing their training will help stimulate sense our feelings So if you are nervous or anxious their mind as well as burn off excess energy which will be noticeable through they can and will pick up on this Confidence is key their much calmer behaviour 2 Understand the nature of a horse 5 Their diet is incorrect By this I mean a horse is an animal which has Diets differ for contrasting reasons For instance a horse who is doing regular certainly built in reactions which will determine its high intensity exercise which requires a lot of energy will need to be fed a survival in the wild Consider this for a moment a high energy diet horse is a natural prey animal This means that it feels like it is a source of food to other predators in In contrast if your horse is not regularly exercising a high energy diet may the wild make them nervous because of the excess energy build up that their body is not burning off Your horse s behaviour may be impacted by their diet which As such it has a built in fight and flight reaction is something worth looking into which it will use in situations that are perceived to be life threatening Hence it will react without 6 Pain thinking if it feels threatened or startled Its first reaction is to flight so when it spooks or takes off If your pony is acting nervous or anxious it is worth checking to see that they without warning that is its natural reaction are not injured or ill in some way I could imagine if you were a horse and had an injury nothing would be worse than having to carry someone on your 3 Your horse requires more training back If horses are not sure what they are supposed to Remember the tack you use can also be a source of pain and aggravation do or don t understand their job they can display Horses have a great memory so if they have been in pain because of tack in signs of anxiousness A simple solution for this is to the past it s natural that they get anxious when they see you approaching them train them more with a saddle in your arms which is something to keep in mind Ensure you implement certain routines while you 7 They are looking for their friends are training so that they get triggers if they do spook and can calm down quickly There are many ways Horses are social animals and usually travel in a herd to do this This means that they feel happiest and safest when they are around a group One effective way is to use horse treats during they feel comfortable with So when they are removed from this group they training as a reward If they know they will get a can become nervous and display signs of anxiousness horse treat for behaving well this will help them focus on the reward in times of stress which can It is difficult to deal with this type of nerves Only training time and gentle calm them down in nervous situations persuasion can help with this Likewise certain breeds tend to be more connected to their herd than others so your breed of horse can also determine 4 Your horse needs more exercise and be a cause for their behaviour Horses are naturally designed to move They get Bottom line is horses are wonderful beautiful creatures who are born with agitated if they can t stretch their legs out on a emotions and fears and instincts just like humans So understanding why a regular basis If they are stabled for too long or lead horse is nervous will assist you in strengthening your relationship with them a sedentary lifestyle by being in a small paddock or This will assist you in developing a long term friendship evoking feelings of stall they are more likely to become anxious simply safety and comfort with your new friend because of a build up of energy 25

MEET ADRIAN LOGIUDICE The Mastermind Behind Petbar WHY DID YOU CREATE THE APP The idea for the app came to me after adopting my little Bichon Poodle Daisy I very quickly became attached to her and Daisy is now apart of our family We loved taking her out with us but initially it was so hard to find pet friendly businesses and services in our area This was how I came up with the idea for Places and Merchants and from there the app grew into what it is today and I couldn t be happier with the results WHAT IS THE MESSAGE YOU ARE TRYING TO CONVEY WITH PETBAR Petbar connects people with pets It is a way to get more involved in the animal community find and support local businesses and appreciate pets the way they deserve to be appreciated WHAT IS YOUR TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC Anyone and everyone You don t even have to be a pet owner to enjoy Petbar all you need is a love and appreciation for animals to enjoy the app WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE APP The main purpose is to create a feel good environment for users to do a variety of things This includes finding local businesses watching and viewing entertaining content and educating yourself by playing our fun and interactive quizzes I think it s also part of our social and moral obligation to alert the public to issues that are happening in the animal world and encourage others to make a difference One issue we are extremely passionate about is changing the restrictive rules and regulations in Australia regarding travelling with pets on board aircrafts prohibitions in National Parks and the general lack of pet friendly services Petbar is a great way to communicate these views and to encourage others around the world to make a difference and stand up for what they believe in WHERE TO FROM HERE Stay tuned we have some exciting things coming 43

Meet Anna Ostrovskaya the founder of Winterpooh How did Winterpooh start Patrick my dog became a part of our family pretty quickly after I first bought him and I decided that I wanted to do something beautiful for him This is how I came up with the idea for Winterpooh a family business launched with the help of my mother Emma Why did you choose the name Winterpooh It was really hard to choose the name for our brand I originally considered the name DoggyPooh but then decided that it sounded a little boring In Russian the word pooh means fluff in English So I chose to replace the word doggy with Winter and thus Winterpooh was born 44

What was the inspiration behind your company We live in Minsk Belarus which is a small town and we don t have a large variety of many things including dog clothes Luckily my husband and I have had the opportunity to travel around the world Seeing stylish people walking their dogs on the street became my inspiration in addition to adopting Patrick Sherlock the TV series was another one of my inspirations What countries do you get the most orders from Most of our clients are from Russia and we do get lots of customers from other European countries Six months ago we started to ship to the USA and Canada It s so incredible to work with people from all over the world A few days ago we even received our first order from Australia which is very exciting for our small business Why did you decide to make your products available worldwide Initially Winterpooh was available to customers in Belarus and Russia But after six months I found that I was being approached by customers from all over the world and decided that it was time to offer global shipping I wasn t comfortable communicating with customers in English at the beginning but I found that by talking with them I was improving my language skills I eventually found the confidence to communicate in English and now we work with people from around the globe It s very exciting knowing that dogs around the world are wearing our clothes and accessories What is the style of your clothing Winterpooh s style is comfortable handmade casual and elegant pet wear The most important aspect for us is quality combined with comfort to ensure that pets feel warm and move with ease in our products What do you think it means to be a pet owner Being a pet owner means that you get lots of love and smiles everyday A pet owner should remember that taking care of a pet is like taking care of a child The best way to describe being a pet owner is the following quote from the movie The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exup ry He says you are responsible forever for what you have tamed 45

AUSTRALIA TOO BEHIND I f you didn t already know in 2017 I travelled with my furry best friend Mya A white German shepherd dog from Australia to North America Over the past 18 months we have been fortunate enough to explore much of North America including Banff NP Jasper NP Yellowstone NP Grand Canyon NP Yosemite NP and Badlands NP These are some of the most beautiful places in the world they have so many opportunities for recreational activities contain some stunning and fragile landscapes and are home to some amazing wildlife But unlike National Parks in Australia dogs are actually permitted in some capacity within National Parks in the USA and Canada It s quite common to see people in National Parks in North America going hiking backcountry ski touring and kayaking with their dogs These people often have a greater connection and respect for the environment than some other user groups In Canada dogs are generally permitted anywhere in National Parks as long as they are on a lead no longer than 10 feet Whilst in the USA dogs are generally permitted in campgrounds on roadways car parks and paved trails as long as they are on a leash no longer than 6 feet Neither of these countries National Parks is at risk of losing their ecosystems due to dogs being permitted So with a growing number of households in Australia considering dogs members of their families why aren t dogs allowed in National Parks in Australia We did some research and came up with the following three reasons 1 Australian wildlife is vulnerable to the predation and disease that dogs may cause Much of Australia s wildlife is certainly vulnerable to predation Speaking to vets and looking at previous research I was actually amazed at how many wildlife deaths are attributed to dogs Far less than motor vehicles though and we still allow them in National Parks and if this can be prevented it certainly should be Sadly there is no way to distinguish between deaths caused by feral dogs dingos or domestic dogs so appropriate blame is hard to place Common sense though is if dogs are under effective control on a lead this shouldn t be an issue In regards to domestic dogs passing on diseases we spoke to several vets and found little evidence of this In fact we couldn t find any examples of domestic dogs in Australia infecting other species of animals with a disease Rabies and other diseases that pose a risk aren t problems in Australia 54 WRITTEN BY MARK mark_and_myas_adventures

Page 57

Bigger issues are worms mites ticks and Giardia Although there are already plenty of other animals and humans in National Parks that can spread these the impact from domestic dogs can be managed through regularly flea and worming treatments removal of faeces and simply not taking a sick dog into these areas 2 Dogs barking or scents are enough to disturb and scare away native wildlife and attract other dogs which may invade from surrounding localities The simple presence of even leashed dogs can be enough to disturb wildlife and there are several studies that provide evidence of this in regards to birds This can be an issue particularly at breeding times when birds are disturbed from their nests as it can impact the success of them having offspring These studies also identified that the presence of humans will also disturb wildlife but at a lower level than dogs Sadly there is little information about what distance the presence of a dog will impact wildlife 3 Escaped pets can become feral and pose a major threat to many native species Feral dogs and cats are a major issue in Australia for wildlife Many parks management teams utilise poisons such as 1080 to control these animals and protect native wildlife Whilst this is a serious issue if dogs are kept under effective control on a leash they are unlikely to go missing and owners who go to the effort of taking them with them are unlikely to abandon them It seems like keeping dogs under effective control using a leash whilst on a designated trail and removing their faeces would eliminate or significantly reduce many of the above risks Some would argue though that not all dog owners are responsible and as a result a blanket ban is more appropriate In fact Parks Victoria justifies their blanket ban stating that previous dog rules created confusion within the community Despite an existing blanket ban on dogs in National Parks in Australia a man and his two dogs who were both off lead completed a 3 5 day trek in the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park in Tasmania Enforcement statistics provided by Parks Victoria show that in 2017 2018 there were 45 infringements issued for people breaching dog regulations within parks managed by Parks Victoria Since enforcement resources are so minimal actual breaches are likely to be much higher Some would wonder if the existing ban achieves anything more than restricting access to those who want to obey the law Whilst there will always be locations that it is completely inappropriate to have dogs due to wildlife breeding and other factors there are many National Parks in Australia including Alpine Mountain Resorts with designated walking trails and areas so developed and frequented by people that the presence of dogs on a leash or in a stationary air conditioned caravan would have a minimal impact on the environment As more and more Australian s include dogs in their families and want to travel with them the question of if dogs should be excluded from all National Parks in Australia is likely to be one more frequently discussed Our Australian community takes great pride in trying to be as inclusive as possible we hope that through these discussions a solution can be found that will provide greater access to our National Parks whilst protecting them and the wildlife that call them home 55

Meet NIKA KIRA 2 HUSKETEERS D ogs and cats require whole prey meat rich diets for a long happy healthy life This philosophy is in line with research published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2015 which argues that dogs are carnivores like their wild canid relatives The researchers concluded that whilst cohabitation with humans has altered the genetics of dogs to an extent the digestive system of modern dogs remains largely unaltered This is evident for example in the teeth of a dog which can be adapted to a carnivorous diet for tearing muscle and crunching bone to extract marrow Research indicates that dogs have adapted their metabolism as a result of living with humans and thus the modern dog can survive on a grain based or carbohydrate based diet such as a kibble diet However it was also acknowledged by researchers that since dogs are true carnivores a dog s ideal diet should reflect this At Ziwi we believe that although dogs can survive on a high carbohydrate diet dogs THRIVE on a carnivorous diet Cats are obligate carnivores Cats are obligate carnivores that is they must eat animal meat and organs to meet their nutritional needs Wild cats and domestic cats in a natural habitat will hunt and consume prey animals which are high in protein with moderate amounts of fat and minimal amounts of carbohydrates In addition cats also require more than a dozen nutrients including vitamins minerals and fatty acids Cats find it difficult to process simple sugars as they do not produce salivary amylase Cats are attracted to the taste of animal fat and proteins in particular the amino acids alanine proline lysine and histidine They also have a higher protein requirement than dogs because they get all their energy entirely from amino acids which is found in meat protein Overall cats need real meat What is a Raw Diet A natural species appropriate diet for a carnivore is one that closely mimics what they would eat in the wild Meat organs bones and a good source of animal fats is what your domestic carnivore needs to flourish Why feed raw Written by Alice Clydsdale from Ziwi Peak

Page 59

The average raw diet follows the whole prey diet or prey model raw PMR guidelines which are 80 muscle meat 10 excreting organ and 10 edible bone These ratios copy the general percentages found in dead prey and it provides your dog or cat with all their day to day essential nutrients of protein fat vitamins and minerals A different approach for dogs is the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food BARF guidelines which are 70 muscle meat 10 excreting organ 10 edible bone and 10 vegetable matter Compared to the PMR diet the BARF diet incorporates dogsafe vegetables to provide vitamins minerals and insoluble fibre to your fur friend Both diets have benefits and as an owner you should do your own research into what diet will better suit your dog such as animal heart kidney and liver The high meat and organ content of all Ziwi recipes meets the nutritional requirements of dogs and cats and there is more than sufficient taurine in all of Ziwi s cat recipes to meet their daily needs Ziwi Peak as a diet encourages optimal health for your carnivorous pets About Ziwi The Ziwi brand was established in 2002 and since then Ziwi has grown to become the global leader in air dried pet nutrition and the leading export pet food brand from New Zealand Today Ziwi is exported to over 20 countries Raw diets sound hard for both dogs and cats from all stages of life Ingredients are ground and then air dried The air drying process has the benefit of protecting the raw protein structure and minimises damage to enzymes nutrients and vitamins Ziwi complies with all international standards All of our recipes comply with the AAFCO nutritional requirements The meat and seafood in our products are processed through strict Export Grade Facilities which meet and exceed all international quality standards Ziwi also has an annual testing program which meets and exceeds industry requirements as well as meeting our own internal quality standards If you would like to learn more or find your local stockist please visit www ziwipets com If following a raw diet sounds daunting to you there are plenty of pre made options available There are many BARF companies that calculate the ratios of meat organ and bone your dog needs and then grind it up into a user friendly frozen patty All you have to do is thaw and serve But I don t want to use raw meat Some veterinarians hesitate to recommend a raw food diet for dogs and cats due to concerns about contamination of food with pathogenic bacteria Ziwi Peak offers an alternative because food safety issues are one of our main concerns Ziwi s follows an air drying process where we use a slow and gentle low temperature that takes hours to dry raw food The twin stage air drying process eliminates pathogens bacteria such as bacteria and parasites while protecting the natural nutrition of the ingredients Our food is air dried to a point where there isn t enough moisture to allow harmful micro organisms to grow Ziwi offers a way for dog and cat owners to give their animals a raw diet without the need to handle and process raw meat bones and organs which introduces the risk of contamination by improper or inadequate hygiene practices Ziwi recipes require minimal handling thus reducing the risk of contamination Protein of High Biological Value Protein is arguably the most important nutrient in a dog and cat s diet Dietary proteins that have high biological value are those that contain a high amount of essential amino acids that are highly digestible For carnivores proteins with high biological value include muscle meat organ meats such as heart kidney liver and lung and fish proteins Furthermore the best natural sources of taurine a vital amino acid for cats is found in animal protein in particular organs around the world and has a growing portfolio of air dried and canned foods rewards and oral chew offerings Every product is produced packed and quality checked in New Zealand Ziwi is a family owned business from the coastal town of Mount Maunganui on the North Island of New Zealand Ziwi works closely with only the best New Zealand farmers to ensure all ingredients meet the highest standards and follow ethical and sustainable farming and fishing guidelines All meat is sourced from free range farms where the animals are grass fed and the fish are wild caught from around New Zealand What ingredients are found in Ziwi Peak food Ziwi s philosophy is to offer highly nutritious food that mimics a whole prey high meat diet for dogs and cats All of our food and recipes contain meat bone organs from free range grass fed animals as well as seafood A whole 3 of our food makes up New Zealand sustainably sourced green lipped mussel and 7 is green tribe More than 50 of tripe is used in the Lamb and Tripe recipe Is Ziwi complete and balanced To comply with AAFCO nutritional standards essential vitamins and chelated minerals are added to create a complete and balanced diet 57

dences on the estate Each residence has its own unique design externally and internally Beautiful places that are very well appointed For those of you wondering why there are only 8 residence and availability issues don t fret there are plans it seems to build a 400 million 176 room hotel 1075 seat theatre and conference centre and a function facility that can seat 1000 people Now that s an extension On arrival we set out to explore the estate as we arrived on Friday and had booked our Museum tickets for Saturday and Sunday The place is quite interesting and as you wander around and check out some of the art around the grounds you get a little taste of the quirkiness that only a true artist has From the car crashing through pitched concrete walls giving the impression of depth see photo inlay or perhaps the signage on the owner s car spaces that say reserved for God on his and reserved for Gods mistress on hers You get an idea of the sense of humour of the Art Collector Professional Gambler and Businessman David Walsh who is the inspiration and money behind the Museum As you stroll through the grounds there are pieces that you stare at and think WOW as well as being entertained along the way by comical signs on the hoarding which has been erected due to expansion works being undertaken It seems David has it in for Steve with his one message to the public reading This detour to Pharos is a consequence of Steve s bad design poor forethought and uncontrolled avarice This sign is a consequence of a deep seated need to publicly punish Steve who for some reason still has a Smile on his face

OUR TRAVEL SPECIAL We enjoyed the day exploring and just soaking in the atmosphere If the weather permits which was the case for us we enjoyed a light lunch ordered from the Museum cafe and sat outside overlooking the water That evening we chilled out with a few drinks at the main bar before retiring to our townhouse which is suited for 2 couples as its 2 bedrooms Ok so its Saturday morning and I m ready to roll I want to get into the museum to start exploring What s in store for us What s it going to be like Will I love it Hate it Have I built up the suspense enough for you Firstly let me explain the building itself The museum is built underground in the side of the cliff face It s big and deep Amazing to think of how big a hole this would have been before they actually got started with building its inner core in fact this massive underground structure is a work of art in itself and would make the coolest Batcave ever Let me tell you a little about a few of the exhibits in the museum Let s start with the wall of Vaginas Yes that s not a misprint A long wall of Vaginas All types and shapes Not sure how else to explain it Maybe the insert photo will be a little more explanatory Walking along the path displaying the art I wasn t entirely sure if it was one of those pieces you need to stand there and look at to understand better yet I felt a little uncomfortable standing there staring at the vaginas for too long 70

Let s move on to the living art piece which is a man sitting on a block This man Tim is tattooed from head to toe He is the art According to the information provided by Mona Belgian artist Wim Delvoye turned him into a canvas and temporary frame for a large tattoo on his back In 2008 a German collector bought the still unfinished artwork for EURO 150 000 The artwork will be completed when Tim dies and the tattoo is handed over to its owner He sits there so still that you question if he is alive The art over his body is really interesting and displays various ink work we have included a photo of Tim as an insert so please take time to enjoy and see what you can make of it all What about the piece created by the Belgian artist best know as The Shit Machine This piece is supposed to show the human digestion system and uses the various bags to show the way we produce and dispose of our POO It s a piece that whilst sounds repulsive draws you in with intrigue This piece is actually one of the pieces people spend most time viewing at the Museum Let s move along to an interesting piece which is a timber chair sitting in front of a blank white wall on the chair is a white bowl with water and a 2 Gold Fish with a knife sitting over the top That s it I m not sure the meaning of it all but hey what am I to know Another piece I would like to mention is the piece created by Erwin Wurm It s the FAT CAR which is a full sized Porsche which has had the body resulted and blown out to represent the obesity of Western Consumption 71

OUR TRAVEL SPECIAL There are so many things within the museum that I haven t mentioned and plenty worth seeing I would definitely recommend visiting Hobart for this Although we did get through within the 1 day if you are a true lover of modern art and are the type that will stand at a piece and absorb every fibre of it then it would be worthy of a 2 day ticket dining which is right up my alley as it gives me a chance to taste a little of everything Food was great service was great but that evening the restaurant was close enough to empty which sort of took the shine off the ambiance On Saturday night we went to dinner at FARO located on the edge of the cliff facing the bay The views are beautiful in an evening and the restaurant s decor sets a nice mood The menu is very much shared plate A great weekend escape for all the mainland Aussies or a definite must visit if you are travelling to Australia on vacation Ahh Sunday morning time to go Off to the main CBD in Hobart for a few hours before heading back home SEE YOU AGAIN SOON TASMANIA
