B reeding is often linked with issues in society such as animal homelessness and euthanasia as it decreases the opportunity for shelter dogs to be adopted which is why the phrase has so many negative connotations associated with it Statistics show that within six years one female dog and her offspring can give birth to up to 70 000 puppies Whilst every year millions of lost and unwanted dogs cats bunnies and all other kinds of pets end up in animal shelters around the world This overpopulation then turns into pets being euthanised which is the disgusting truth and consequence of this practice Due to modern technological societal developments in addition to changes in lifestyle more and more people are opting not to have pets as they are becoming increasingly busier in their day to day lives This is why adopting shelter pets as opposed to supporting the breeding industry is so crucial Shelters adopt a wide range of pets from Animal shelters are only responsible for approximately 20 of the pets accounted for in peoples homes which is a highly alarming statistic Essentially it is our responsibility to give each and every animal a loving and caring home and the issue of supply and demand is an issue that we as a society have created so we shouldn t subject these innocent animals to euthanasia because of it Purebred dogs are considered to be the strongest and most aesthetically pleasing types of canine which is why breeding is such a controversial Breeders should be exposed to more restrictive rules and regulations so that there are fewer of them operating Regular checks to ensure that they are working ethically and legally should also be implemented And as opposed to purchasing purebred dogs and cats globally from breeders as a society and community we should be focusing on advertising and marketing pet shelters more heavily across social media and to our individual networks industry and practice that occurs placid older breeds to energetic younger animals that you can correlate and suit to your living conditions and individual lifestyle In addition to this you are saving a life which is the most rewarding gift of all And although it might be completely acceptable to purchase from a responsible breeder the issue at hand is that there are too many dogs and not enough homes And the only way to resolve this prevalent societal issue is to find a balance with the supply and demand problem at hand If you are after a particular purebred dog or cat many rescue organisations can assist you with this And you can speak with them about what animal or breed is ideal for you and your family which reduces the alarming high turnover rate of returned and exchanged animals We need to solve the supply and demand issue at hand And we need to solve it fast AdoptDontShop 13

INFEATURE Get in Get inthe theCargo cargo Should changes be made regarding the restrictive laws implemented for pets and pet owners travelling on board Australian aircrafts T ravelling with pets has become increasingly more popular around the globe However Australia still seems to acquire outdated and more restrictive rules and regulations regarding travelling with pets both domestically and internationally making it difficult for people to do so board one of their aircrafts and no weight restrictions apply To put the issue into perspective findings from a study conducted by Compare the Market placed no Australian city on the list of top pet friendly travel destinations in the world while cities such as New York Seoul and Tokyo took the lead Air France was found to be the most pet friendly airline as they allow people to travel with up to three pets on board and the price is extremely affordable mirroring the cost of paying for additional standard luggage Second to Air France results showed that the British based airline Thomas Cook was another top pet friendly airline For as little as 15 euros you can pay to travel with your pet on Closer to home Air New Zealand is another one of Compare the Markets stricter airlines because pets are required to travel in cargo for international flights Cathay Pacific also implement similar rules with the exception of service dogs on board 14 In contrast the least pet friendly airlines were found to be EasyJet Emirates and FlyBe because they don t allow pets to travel on board at all This strongly demonstrates how much work is still required regarding travelling with pets within Australia and how ridiculous these regulations are in comparison to the less restrictive rules implemented by international airlines

TRAVELLING WITHIN AUSTRALIA Virgin Australia currently only allows authorised assistance dogs to travel on board flights And in regards to other dogs and cats very strict rules and restrictions apply and they must travel in cargo An example of a restrictive rule is that pets must be between the age of 8 weeks and 12 years old and must not exceed 65kg to be classified as fit for travel When travelling to Tasmania even further restrictions apply as dogs must be tested for Hydatids Tapeworm prior to flying In 2013 Virgin Australia launched a frequent flyer program for pets which has slightly increased the number of pets travelling annually But in comparison to the 2 million pets who travel within the United States each year Australia still has a long way to go Following the Customs Prohibited Items Regulations 1956 crossbreeds are only approved and allowed on aircrafts under the discretion of Virgin This rule is heavily enforced on breeds such as the Japanese Tosa and Fila Brasilerio which are completely banned Australian airline Qantas have similar rules to Virgin regarding travelling with pets despite stating on their website that the airline understands your pet is an important member of the family and just like people pets need to travel as quickly and comfortably as possible Despite their emphasis on comfort they still subject pets to travel in cargo COUNTER ARGUMENT Many people actually agree with the restrictions implemented by Australian airlines in regards to travelling on board aircrafts with pets According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America between 15 30 of individuals are allergic to dogs and cats to some extent Symptoms can vary from sneezing to more dangerous reactions such as severe asthma attacks A simple solution to this would be limiting the number of pets allowed on board aircrafts and allocating a designated section for dogs to sit with their owners on planes A good example of an airline implementing this rule is the American Southwest Airline as they only allow a maximum of six pets to travel per flight Michelle Agnew a spokeswoman for the airline publicly stated that passengers severely affected by pets on board can notify an employee and request to be moved which seems like a fair compromise Airlines such as JetBlue an American low cost carrier go further than that and offer customers a full refund if pets on board a flight have affected their ability to travel or their level of comfort But this controversial debate really comes down to pets not being fully regarded and respected as part of people s families within Australia It is unfair that they are separated from their owners and put in less than ideal conditions Many pets especially first time flyers are scared and suffer severe separation anxiety as the conditions in cargo are less than ideal In addition to dimly lit lighting their surroundings are unfamiliar and they are not provided with the comfort or safety that comes with their owner being right by their side Put bluntly if screaming children can roam freely on an aircraft then pets should be allowed to be securely caged and sit by their designated carer 15

PET PASSPORT AND IMPORT REGULATIONS A ustralia s Pet Passport and Import Regulations are amongst the strictest in the world As a standard precaution your pet will be imposed to 10 days of quarantine when entering Australia If you are returning to Australia from another country even stricter rules and regulations apply For example vaccinations are required for all pets returning from any countries other than New Zealand Norfolk Island and Keeling Island You must present proof of microchip documentation submit a rabies test and your dog or cat must be treated against internal parasites twice and the second test must be conducted within five days of your pet returning to the country Because of the unfair travel conditions for pets in Australia pet owners are encouraged not to travel between the months of December to February because of the hot weather conditions There are also various breeds of dogs and cats which are not permitted to enter Australia These include the American Pit Bull Dogo Argentino and the Perro de Presa 16

ADVICE FOR TRAVELLING ON AUSTRALIAN AIRCRAFTS If you do decide to travel with your pet it is important to make sure that they are prepared and fit for travel especially due to the fact that they will not be near you for the duration of the flight Purchasing a First Aid kit from your vet is highly recommended It is useful to have this handy before or after a flight particularly for first time pet travellers In addition to this whether you have purchased a container or are borrowing one from the airline it is useful to ensure that your furry friend becomes accustomed to travelling in these small confined conditions Take them for drives in a small cage and put their favourite toy in there as well as some drinking water so that they can warm up and adjust to the idea of being confined to a limited space It is also recommended that you purchase an additional protective kennel mat This absorbs liquid and will make your pets journey more hygienic and comfortable On the day of travel you should feed your pet a light meal a few hours before take off as this will reduce the chances of them feeling ill on the plane You should also ensure that they drink plenty of water and that they are staying hydrated Nobody understands your beloved pet more than you do which means that only you will know whether they are suitable for this type of travel or not Although you may want them with you on your holiday if they are prone to separation anxiety or don t have the emotional or physical capabilities to deal with confined spaces or hours of travel then travel is not advisable Brachycephalic breeds in particular should not travel as they are naturally at a higher risk of experiencing heat stress Dogs pant when they are excited stressed or in high energy situations as a method of evaporative cooling But Brachycephalic breeds such as French bulldogs Pugs and Persian cats struggle to do this naturally which means that they will struggle even more on an aeroplane Pets with thick heavy coats of hair such as Siberian Huskies and Malamutes may also find travelling difficult Some airlines outright deny these breeds on board purely because they require more supervision It is important if you are travelling for the first time with your pet that you visit your vet and get a certificate that certifies that they are fit for travel As domestic travel with pets grows within Australia it is paramount to take into account these travelling tips to ensure that your pets trip is as comfortable as possible because put simply they deserve it 17

Is Your Dog BORED Y ou are the main source of entertainment when it HYPER ACTIVENESS lives Because of this it is important to keep your pets If your dog is chewing on objects around your house being super hyper active and greeting you with more energy than usual then alarm bells should ring as this is one of the most common signs of boredom Taking your dog for a walk or for a run at the park is strongly encouraged both mentally and physically stimulated to avoid them DIGGING becoming bored Boredom can lead to depression Digging is something dogs do for fun to burn off excess energy they have If you have noticed that your dog is digging up holes all around the backyard then they are definitely bored comes to caring for your dog You dictate when they play eat exercise go to the vet attend appointments and you schedule in all other important events in their separation anxiety and other serious issues so it is crucial for your dogs well being to understand and know the signs of boredom and know how to cure it BARKING Have you noticed that your dog has been barking more than usual And at everything and everyone ding ding Ultimate sign of boredom WHINING Random whining can be caused by stress but it can also be caused by boredom This is a trait most seen in younger dogs and you should definitely take this as a clear signal that your dog is simply looking for something more exciting to do HARASSING OTHER DOGS If your dog is being passive aggressive towards other dogs and maybe even humans then they probably don t have a healthy outlet to utilise their energy This is a clear sign that your dog is frustrated and fed up from too much boredom and not enough mental and physical stimulation CHEWING AND LICKING If your dog is displaying behaviour such as excessive licking or they are chewing on their paws this is another indication that they need more exciting things to do ESCAPING 18 If your dog is left alone in an enclosed space for a long period of time then they may try to escape They can do this by jumping the fence or digging an escape hole Other serious issues may exist causing your dog to exhibit this behaviour and it is recommended that you visit a vet to establish why they are behaving this way

I f your dog is exhibiting any of these behaviours then it is important to discover new ways to give them a healthy outlet to utilise their energy Ensuring your dog is walked once a day or at least taken outside is extremely important You should also ensure that they receive lots of love and affection on a daily basis and that you regularly play games with them to keep them mentally and physically stimulated Organising puppy play dates is a great way to keep your dog sociable and teaches them how to act in a group environment Another suggestion is to only give your dog two or three of their toys a day and alternate between toys every morning to keep things exciting and interesting for them You might also consider taking them to a friends house or to a doggy daycare centre for a short period of time You can even hire a dog walker to come during the week if you re busy at work or have other priorities so that your dog doesn t become restless or too hyper active SOLUTION B eing able to detect these symptoms at their early stages will help resolve and prevent these issues from escalating and will make finding a solution much easier Speaking to a vet or professional may be something you consider doing otherwise giving your dog more love affection care exercise and attention may be just what they need 19

MEET SANDRA BADER I have always been fascinated by the loyalty and devotion dogs have to their owners Compared to many other animals dogs have an inherent need for companionship attachment and affection very similar to our own human needs This allows us to bond with our dogs on a very intimate level and is the catalyst for beautiful connections and friendships At the same time our domesticated dogs are hugely dependent on us for safety nutrition exercise and care As humans we have a wide range of options to treat our aches pains and injuries including more holistic bodywork modalities such as therapeutic and remedial massage therapy Dogs on the other hand rely solely on us to provide them with the best care possible I first became interested in physical therapy for dogs while I was working as a remedial massage therapist for humans At the time I noticed that my own dog Chito displayed very similar symp toms to us humans when muscular imbalances were present These included stiffness tightness pain irritability and sometimes even a lack of energy As a strong advocate for natural approaches I generally seek out the least invasive method to address any present issues extremely rewarding I have witnessed some remarkable recoveries often when dog owners have exhausted all other conventional modalities I have also enabled the elderly and often arthritic dogs to experience their last few years with less discomfort and pain Moreover my experience has taught me that if the source of a problem is not addressed the discomfort and pain that results from stiffness and tightness and particularly muscle injuries will not be resolved in the long term My own knowledge of how soft tissue imbalances and injuries effect performance and recovery in humans led me to tackle Chito s problem from a more holistic approach This was the early beginning and the birth of Paws4Paws My tri pawd clients have benefited in countless ways ranging from relieving sore and tight muscles due to overcompensation to strengthening core stability and balance And many of my highly strung and anxious clients have become more relaxed and calm over time One and a half years later after acquiring the appropriate qualification as a Canine Myofunctional Therapist and building my business profile I finally launched Paws4Paws in early 2015 And the last four years have been Chito also bounced back to his old happy self and has been nothing but a source of inspiration joy and emotional support for me during this incredible journey of building and growing Paws4Paws into what it is today Visit www paws4paws com au for more information

INTERVIEW MEET JESSICA KNIGHT Image Graced with art by the Warlukurlangu Aboriginal Artists of Yuendumu Visit www outbacktails com for more details What made you start Outback Tails I had been in the pet industry for more than ten years designing pet accessories and building our sister company DOOG Dog Owners Outdoor Gear with my partner Jamie when I came up with the concept for Outback Tails I felt that there was a gap in the market for a brand that really showcased all that I loved about Australia it s landscapes animals and people incorporated with pet accessories Initially I designed the range as an export brand exclusive to the United States and the European market but I soon realised that there was a huge local interest in the products too so I launched the website www outbacktails com for Australian customers to purchase our products online Where do your designs come from All of the prints on my Indigenous range of beds collars leads and jackets are paintings from the Indigenous artists at the Warlu Art Centre in Yuendumu and 10 of all of my sales go back to the featured artists The Outback animal toys were created by me as I really wanted to design a toy that my dogs could play with that was non toxic for them to chew I also wanted to do my bit to help save our amazing native animal habitats from destruction which is a cause I m particularly passionate about so I give a percentage of profits from the sale of my toys back to a variety of local wildlife charities Where do you see the business in 5 years time I would love to see the brand really grow in the US and European market and hope that with the increasing popularity and success of the brand I can help generate income for my featured artists while bringing attention to their amazing work overseas I have a variety of new products in the pipeline and want to branch out into cat accessories in the not too distant future What made you form such a strong connection with the Warlukurlangu Artists of Yuendumu The connection with the Warlu artists all started from the love I had for one of their featured artists work that I was saving up to purchase I had seen Pauline Napangardi Gallagher s work in a gallery multiple times and one day I decided that I would contact her to see if she would be interested in working with me on this project I spoke to the manager at the arts centre who mentioned to me that dogs were an integral part of the Aboriginal community in Yuendumu and the artists at Warlukurlangu were often surrounded by camp dogs as they worked on their paintings They also have an amazing Desert Dogs program at the Warlu centre where they raise money to desex vaccinate and rehome strays in the area After speaking with them it just seemed like the perfect fit for both of us to collaborate on this project and I m very lucky to be associated with such an amazing group of artists How was your recent European launch It was phenomenal The German market absolutely loved the art featured on the products They are such a forward thinking country with a passion for design and quality and they just loved the range The products are now being stocked in a lovely selection of boutique retailers over there and in France and Scandinavia too so it s all very exciting What do you think it means to be a pet owner There is a saying that goes if you want to experience true love buy a dog That says it all for me My dogs give me so much comfort love and happiness and I couldn t imagine my life without them 39

OUR TRAVEL SPECIAL ACCOMODATION It s time to start enjoying my 3 night stay at the Versace hotel Room cleanliness is great decor is well very Versace the pool is spectacular and we are even offered pool cabanas for free which is a bonus MOVIEWORLD My Sunday morning consisted of a conversation with my 12 year old daughter that went a little something like this 78 Jada Dad can we go to Movieworld today Me Wouldn t you just prefer to sit by the pool and hang out Jada Nah Movieworld Me What about if we order burgers by the pool Jada Dad we discussed this for months and now it s time we go to Movieworld Me Gggrrrr So off to Movieworld we go Being just pre madness season getting through rides was swift because there were hardly any lines Photos with all the Warner Brothers characters was also a great experience and there were no big crowds and no comments such as I m tired or why is this taking so long and that s just from me Let me tell you folks having the opportunity to bond and act a little silly with my youngest was great and well worth the experience We arrived at 11 30am and departed by 4pm so overall I think it was a very successful day

MY COFFEE STORY Can someone please give me a Long Macchiato I am only a 2 hour flight from Melbourne well technically 1 hour 36 minutes and I have learnt that Melbourne s coffee culture is unfortunately not universal I am a long macchiato drinker and I have and always will be very particular about my coffee I suppose you could even say that I am a critic when it comes to coffee A long macchiato for me must consist of glass Now let s get the following this straight the 1 Must be served in a glass always and only be the Duralex 2 Approximately one third of the glass should be filled with espresso Please note baristas make sure your espresso machine has had at least 30 minutes to warm up in the morning and make sure you ve released the first lot of steam from your machine to get the residual water out and the steam should be nice and hot The first shot of coffee should be made and then disposed of so that the first batch of water is released from the overnight sitting of water in the tubes Now we re ready to go 3 Ensure that you use hot milk for a long macchiato 4 Froth the milk and with a spoon or the swift move of a skilled baristas hand place about 2 spoons full of froth into the glass you use should glass traditionally used for coffee not tos throughout my 3 day stay and have one of the random glasses used at home been served a touch more than a short for drinking which are all varied in size macchiato if not a short macchiato in each and every case And to make it If the coffee blend being used is a qual even worse I was served my coffee in ity blend then your coffee should taste an espresso cup Oh the horror smooth and there should be no after math of bitterness in your mouth This Are baristas schooled differently in the should also mean that there is no need Gold Coast Am I wrong in saying this for sugar to be added But I am not go These are the questions readers Let s ing to pass judgement on coffee roast not be quiet about this topic as these are ers now and may need to leave this dis questions that must be answered Yes cussion and review for another time must Let s make quality coffee making standardised throughout the country like Now where was I Ahh yes coffee cul taxes There needs to be a playbook that ture every barista must follow damn it Speak out and tell us what your thoughts are I have requested several long macchia for the perfect cappuccino latte piccolo three quarter or whatever your go to is

MUSHROOM KALE RISOTTO INGREDIENTS METHOD 400g mushrooms 1 Preheat oven to 200 Celcius 1 cup boiling water 2 Heat oil in a saucepan and add leek and celery 3 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 1 brown onion 1 1 2 cups rice 1 cup finely grated parmesan 3 Cook for 6 7 minutes 4 Add the barley stock and water then stir 5 Reduce heat and stir until the stock has been absorbed 1 2 cup dry white wine 6 In a new saucepan heat oil onion and rice together then add wine 3 garlic cloves 7 Stir until wine has evaporated 40g butter 8 Add the garlic mushrooms butter barley kale and parsley 1 cup barley rinsed 2 cups vegetable liquid stock 100g chopped kale 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 9 Combine both mixtures together and garnish with parmesan and pepper to taste 60
