Havana: 8 nightsMatanzas: 6 nightsDear Students,It has been my lifelong dream to make apilgrimage to Cuba to study percussion.I have always wanted to experiencemusic education both in a formalacademic setting and in an informalsetting in Cuba. This trip gives us achance to learn about Santeria, itshistory and its bond with percussion. There will also be discussions about thefusion of the Yoruba religion andCatholicism. We will see how folklorictraditions in Cuba are closely tied toreligious rituals and ceremonies. We will also go to places that will showus the impacts of the slave trade andhow it affected the evolution of Cubanmusic. Our guides will help us examinethe hierarchy of different drums andrhythms. As you may or may not know,Afro-Cuban drumming has a deepencyclopedic nomenclature for rhythms. While there, we can discover whycertain rhythms have certain names. The activities we will experience willprovide us with the opportunity to learnmore deeply about folkloric and Afro-Cuban percussion traditions andpractices through performance, engagement with Cuban musicians, cultural experts, and relevantcommunity organizations.I invite you to take this journey with meand experience first hand the magicalrhythms of the Pearl of the Antilles.
