Return toAustin or independent travelDear students, Are you ready to embark on a fabulousjourney to Brazil in the summer of 2026?We’ll be visiting Brazil’s first capital—Salvador—a beautiful northeastern cityknown for its cobblestone streets, colonial-era architecture, and vibrant culturalheritage.Salvador is considered the Brazilian city withthe strongest African influence, giving rise tocultural treasures ranging from theTropicália movement to the two main stylesof Capoeira. During our stay, we’ll meet localmasters who will introduce us to Brazilianmusic and dance traditions such as Sambade Roda, Axé, and Forró. We’ll also train withCapoeira masters, learning not only themartial art’s movements but also its culturalsignificance and global impact. For a change of pace, we’ll meetpractitioners of Candomblé—exploring thisAfro-Brazilian religion, its ties to the Africandiaspora, and how it intertwines with musicand culture. All of this will be set against abackdrop of breathtaking beaches, landscapes, and world-famous landmarks. To balance the trip, we’ve also planned anexcursion to the Sapiranga Reserve, wherewe can relax in nature away from the bustleof the city. While the daily itinerary will befull of learning and sightseeing, don’t worry—we’ve made sure to leave time for enjoyingthe beach and, of course, experiencingunforgettable live music performances (withthe chance to join in if we’re lucky!).Goodies, I haven’t forgotten about you.Salvador’s cuisine is as diverse as its music.Expect delicious African-influenced seafooddishes and exotic fruits you won’t find in theU.S.The only drawback to experiencing such anincredible city?
