FAMILY LIFE IN SPAIN Costa Families at Christmas Kerys and Aine shares with KOTC what life is like for them and their families living in southern Spain at this very special time of the year and then we settle down to a home cooked extravaganza of food served up by the local supermarket We particularly like the fish and meat available at Supercor We are lucky enough to have a great view of Gibraltar so at midnight we can always take advantage of the free firework display that s provided Do you celebrate The Three Kings on 6th of January Of course We join the very busy streets in the local town and watch the elaborate parade of the 3 kings who throw sweets and gifts for the children to collect Its magical and frenetic and great fun Kerys can you tell us a little bit about your family There are three of us and a rabbit called Connie Jesus my partner 43 and me Kerys 48 with Sophia age 3 years We live in Venta Melchor in the hills of La Linea de la Concepcion We live here because Jesus works in Gibraltar as a Pharmacist and we moved to Spain in Jan 2014 just after Sophia was born We love living here so much that this year we took the big step of buying our own property a house in a urbanisation so we have a lovely community atmosphere and feel very welcome Sophia started going to the Spanish public preschool in September and I work part time as a private science tutor so I can still fit in all I need to do for the family and enjoy the beautiful place that we live in We are a house that is a pure mix of UK and Spain and we do all we can to incorporate both cultures for our daughter What do you like to do to prepare for the festive period I always put up the house decorations at the beginning of December I love to add lots of sparkly lights with the Christmas tree as the focus I m not a fan of Christmas fruit cake so I will make a UK traditional Christmas log chocolate sponge cake instead I also start to bake and buy mince pies We also stock up on palvorones crumbly sweet delicacies individually wrapped giant slabs of turron anything from nougat to nut chocolate and Jesus dad each year prepares everyone in the family a bottle of sloe gin or pacharan a beautifully fruity and intoxicating warm aperitif Can you recommend any festive events and activities for families to enjoy on the Costa del Sol For us at this stage it s about introducing our little one to the typical traditions One at a time Last year we went to an event in Gibraltar there was Santa who arrived to spread joy and happiness with balloons gifts and fun It was simple and straightforward This year we are going to UK and we will show our daughter the carol service and Christmas panto Do you like to eat out on Christmas Day or do you stay at home We definitely prefer to spend Christmas at home with the family Our Spanish family much prefer to celebrate on Christmas eve Noche Buena where we meet together as many of the family as possible and start preparing the meal around 3 5pm we start tapas and chat and drinks at around 7pm Our main meal normally is served anytime after 10pm dessert 12am and party games and fun into the early hours There is always a lot of fun laughter photographs singing and jokes It s fantastically exhausting At sometime around 1 2am gifts are hidden around the house and the youngest in the family are sent to find them When found we each get to open our gifts there and then Christmas day is much quieter and normally we will visit a church or a local town to have a walk take in some fresh air and relax How does your family celebrate New Year As we are fairly new to this area and we have a little one we have recently spent NewYears Eve with friends who also have a toddler We get the little ones into bed 4 Lastly what does Christmas mean to your family Christmas is a time when we stop and spend time together as a family and appreciate each other I love it Aine can you tell us a little bit about your family We are a family of four My husband Eric is 40 years old Canadian living here for 14 years now He speaks English French and Spanish I am11 37 years old Irish living here for 12 years now I speak English and Spanish We have two children Leo is eight years old He loves karate green orange belt video games and a bit of football Maya is four years old She loves ballet and anything princessy We live between Elviria and El Rosario What do you like to do to prepare for the festive period We go to Ireland every second year This year we are staying in Spain We absolutely love decorating the house going to Christmas markets going to Malaga to see the lights etc This we do every year whether we go to Ireland or not This year we are going skiing as well which will add to the excitement as the children are dying to see snow Can you recommend any festive events and activities for families to enjoy on the Costa del Sol As above the lights in Malaga and all the little markets Do you like to eat out on Christmas Day or do you stay at home We usually stay at home but this year we are going to eat out We are thinking of going to Los Arcos in Benavista How does your family celebrate New Year We wrap up warm after dinner and go down to Marbella for a walk along the paseo kids on scooters or bikes etc Then home light a fire watch a movie with popcorn have a vino It s a far cry from before we had children Do you celebrate The Three Kings on 6th of January Yes well the children get presents from Santa on 25th and then they get one thing from the Kings as well We go to La Cala de Mijas to watch the parade and then the next morning they get their present Lastly what does Christmas mean to your family We are both self employed and extremely busy most of the time So Christmas is a time to spend some quality time together Since we started staying in Spain every second year we realise how much stress it is to travel at that time of the year A huge thank you to both Kerys and Aine and we wish you and your families the most magical time over the festive period

EDUCATING YOUNG MINDS EX by Anne M J T I O I N U T A R T Most people seem to think that anyone having extra classes is failing in school or has had a bad exam result This is only true in some cases The rest of the students having home tuition are actually doing all right at school but they want to improve or just learn more In many cases the students don t ask enough questions at school and are left with doubts or misunderstandings However in a private class they can get answers to all their doubts They get a chance to reassure themselves that what they are doing is right Other students quite simply want to improve in some or all subjects and learn more than what there is time for at school Then there is another group those that essentially ask to have their mistakes corrected ie what the teachers used to do Teaching methods today often encourage teachers to comment on a student s work in such a way as to not discourage anyone however very often this implies correcting only a few mistakes not all As a result especially spelling mistakes are left uncorrected At some later stage one of these misspelt words is suddenly corrected often leaving the student perplex as to why the correction hadn t been made earlier Sometimes home tuition means homework help Most parents do not have time to help their children and some are not able to sometimes because of a language barrier the reasons vary 8 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA T H E F E S T I V E E D I T I O N In many cases the students themselves are not fluent in the school language usually English or Spanish However it is very important to stress the fact that homework help by no means signifies doing the homework for the student It is guidance and clearing away doubts and problems so the student can fulfil the requirements In other words reinforcing and adding to the work done at school and hopefully as a result the student participates better in the school class environment Tuition is much more than what is mentioned here but all in all tuition is always something positive for the students and teachers alike The satisfaction of work well done is always present Anne is university educated English French Spanish Psychology and more and has always had a passion for teaching and encouraging students to learn and develop themselves in general and in all school subjects If you would like advice on benefits of extra tuition for your child you can contact Anne on Tel 667 894 891

BOOK REVIEWS INSPIRED STORYTELLING AND GIFT IDEAS Amazingly it s that time of year again Christmas is nearly upon us and we are thinking about the present list who s cooking dinner and hopefully the real meaning of Christmas If you need a little bit of help with the present list then I have some great suggestions for book gifts I will most certainly be purchasing a copy of The little girl who lost Her Name by David Cadji Newby and Pedro Serapicos I came across this book quite by accident when approaching a local printer for my own children s picture books and was looking at a sample of their work Lostmy name was birthed in London in 2012 and apparently the company have sold thousands of books inspiring over 1 000 000 children These delightful and enchanting stories tap into the heart of every young child who loves to be the focus of attention A book about themselves Personalised a gift they will undoubtedly keep forever Yes there s one for the boys too Very cleverly written in rhyme each individual picture book takes the young reader on an adventure to find their name which yes can you believe they had forgotten Well with the help of some interesting characters and animals who they meet on the journey they of course discover their long lost name Another story for the older children which is expected to be a best seller with excellent reviews is Tales of the Peculiar part of Miss Peregrines Children s series Added to which the movie directed by the amazing Tim Burton is released this autumn Now this one personally is not for me but Ransom Rigg s style of storytelling works for many The book a series of ten short stories with a somewhat bizarre and fairy tale nature is gruesome in parts Suitable for kids of 10 years and over so I m told I find some of the stories disturbing Then come to think of it most of the nursery rhymes that I grew up with were quite disturbing too Will I go and see the movie Maybe And by the way the hard bound book is absolutely beautiful slim and with a ribbon as a book mark Finally a fabulous Kindle recently published for young adults is by the author Sara Tun Confronting the Darkness What an excellent read Not too much to handle about 10 000 words but very descriptive quite enthralling in fact this book gained my interest from the beginning 10 Both the powers of darkness and the angelic forces the battle between good and evil and Jasper s search for truth was intriguing The fact that Jasper the main protagonist longed and was desperate to be alone suddenly found herself in that very position in a world where everything had disappeared around her made me smile and symbolises the thought that we must be very careful what we wish for The story was deep and thought provoking whilst entertaining and beguiling I love Sarah s style of writing and can t wait to read the sequel So with the winter months ahead dark and cosy nights at home lets encourage reading It keeps the kids quiet entertained and hopefully educationally inspired Happy Reading Regards Anna Anna Mckann spends her time between the Yorkshire countryside and her home in Spain She has worked in the educational and childcare sector for 30 years Anna is the author of the Chavos Novels and the Rianbo s Travels series You can find out more or purchase her books from annamckann com www chavos org and www sharonhousepublishing com

by Anna Mckann DOLITA S A CHRISTMAS STORY Christmas WHAT IS CHRISTMAS ALL ABOUT THOUGHT DOLITA AS SHE WANDERED THE STREETS The beginning of the festivities Nine consecutive days of candlelight posadas centred around children The purpose behind them was originally a practical way of teaching the children about the story and birth of Baby Jesus Sadly much of the meaning had been lost as the emphasis moved to merry making the ruthless smashing of pi atas and a mad scramble for the fruits and sweets that they contained Decorated Christmas trees and nativity scenes with clay figures could be seen in many of the homes She had caught glimpses through the windows of some of the houses as she passed by Dolita wandered for hours At one point she managed to sneak into the foyer of a grand hotel before being discovered by a brusque security guard and being thrown out How she sneaked in was a daring feat for a street kid but something that she was determined to try She hid behind the luggage trolley as a guest and his entourage pushed to get through the swing doors She managed to squeeze between them and remarkably made it as far as the entrance to the restaurant Raggy Man her little dog nestled snugly under her arm Dolita could hear talk of preparations for an exotic feast Roast suckling pig turkey ham wild greens in mole sauce and hot fruit punch Oh Raggy Man I don t fancy the mole sauce but I sure would like a piece of that turkey she whispered R a s p b e r r y truffle mmm sounds good But before she heard another word she was discovered and escorted rather roughly out of the building What a commotion She was only a kid after all Why had she created so much attention Don t think they like us Raggy she laughed examining her bruised and scuffed knees as her little body scraped the pavement So indeed what is Christmas all about I suppose that depends on who is asking the question Her mind drifted She thought of the other homeless kids dealing with the pain and misery of the streets Did I do something wrong Raggy Was it my fault Why was I abandoned to live on the streets In spite of the love she had for her little dog she felt a huge chasm of loneliness Knowing that she mustn t give up hope She thanked God for her friends the other street kids But the desire to have a family a real home and share with them the Christmas festivities burdened her Tears fell from her cheeks she snivelled and wiped them away She remembered Street kids don t cry A Vision Birthed Anna s books are fiction based on fact Initiated by many trips to Mexico City between Autumn 2003 and Spring 2013 visiting homeless hungry and kids who dreamed of a better life she began writing Anna also pioneered the charity RCC International and has dedicated all the profits from her books to help and support street children worldwide For more information check out www annamckann com and www rccinternational org uk Silently walking away from the hotel Dolita recalled the stories that Christmas Eve was always rounded off with the opening of presents for the children Slumping in a doorway Raggy Man by her side the sadness overwhelmed her She didn t know how long it had been since she had eaten the hunger pains gripping her stomach A Mexican family crossed the street and their two young children chattered gleefully as they tossed sunflower seeds to a few wandering pigeons Their little girl carried a rag doll A young Indian girl passed by her children trailing behind carrying all their worldly belongings in green plastic bags A boy ran to catch up with them holding an enormous drum base It looked heavy and the poor little mite could barely see over the top of it The church bells rang out in the distance as a tall skinny boy picked up a dirty plastic cup that had the dregs of a cappuccino which had been discarded He slurped the remaining contents grimaced and spat them out Then after burying his head in a nearby trashcan he surfaced with several items of scraps He ravenously ate what looked like the remains of an enchilada Dolita studied every one of them quietly They were all living in the same city yet how different their lives must be She reached over and pulled Raggy Man to her side squeezing him with all the love she could muster 11

Holidays in Spain are a rather complicated affair National and regional public holidays are set by the Spanish government but local events are arranged by the cultural departments of the relevant councils and not usually published until just before the actual celebrations Also remember that if a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday quite often people take an unofficial extra day bridge day on the Monday or Friday though there is a possibility that this will be abolished Most companies and banks will be open but many shops close However if a National Holiday falls on a weekend then usually no extra day is given in lieu Of course many businesses close completely for the whole of August LOCAL HOLIDAYS Keep informed of local holidays and important information by signing up for our CHRISTMAS Apart from decorating the local streets and trees with lights in Spain the Nativity Scenes can be very lavish Even banks and offices put on enormous belenes and locals can be seen queueing to see the best displays Most European countries exchange presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day but here in Spain the Catholics follow the New Testament story of the Magi Three Kings or the Three Wise Men known in Spain as Los Reyes Magos so the two main days are Christmas Eve and the Day of the Three Kings Most bars and restaurants are closed on Christmas Eve as this is the evening when every generation of the family get together to enjoy a traditional feast After the meal the adults exchange gifts but the children usually only get something small they have to wait until Los Reyes Magos Although many families attend Midnight Mass others stay at home celebrate the birth of Christ with a bottle of bubbly NEW YEAR S EVE The evening is celebrated in Spain in a similar fashion to the UK Many families will eat in restaurants and some bars close for private parties At 11 o clock the streets are deserted but just before midnight the town squares begin to fill with families in party A CHRISTMAS GIFT TEACHING THE SPIRIT OF GIVING TO OUR CHILDREN Christmas is the perfect time to teach our kids and teens the true spirit of giving that will last them the whole year through and hopefully remain with them for a life time Traditionally we think of Christmas as a time to give presents to our family friends colleagues and those in need all of which stems from the three wise men giving gifts to baby Jesus on his birth An important message here is that these gifts were not given to seek one in return but rather to express the joy and excitement of His birth in recognition that He was a gift to the world from God and an example to follow in our daily lives THE SPIRIT OF GIVING SHOULD ALWAYS BE FROM A PLACE OF LOVE GRATITUDE AND OR EMPATHY Sadly the true meaning of Christmas has become lost and commercialised and so also is the spirit of giving lost to so many of us today So what is the true meaning of giving For many giving is a way of expressing our gratitude or a way of saying I love you or thinking of you or a congratulation type gift on reaching a milestone or a job well done It can be a number of different things but really the spirit of giving should always be from a place of love gratitude and or empathy Does giving always mean you need to spend money or gift a present Sometimes it is lovely to receive a gift in this way but no giving can mean many things that are even more special Such as sharing your time with a person who is lonely shopping for a neighbour who is unwell gifting your unwanted presents and even the ones you do want to those in need helping out in community and school projects donating food and clothes to the homeless volunteering your time with your local charity walking the dog for an elderly or disabled friend who can t any more sharing your lunch with your friend who forgot theirs going out of your way to drive your colleague to work as their car is in the garage for a week giving up some of your time on Christmas day to feed the homeless a special lunch dinner YOUR CHILDREN NEED YOUR PRESENCE MORE THAN YOUR PRESENTS JESSE JACKSON baking some delicious cakes hand make arts or crafts giving your pocket money or some of your savings to a good cause buying a homeless person their lunch Many of these are little things to us but mean so much to many people Sometimes we need a gentle reminder of just how important they truly are As parents we can always do better and should be demonstrating what we are encouraging our children to do also as they learn better by doing what others do especially from mum and dad What are the gifts that mean the most to us For a family I know the gifts that I most treasure are the ones that my children hand make for me or go out of their way to spend their time on such as making delicious pancakes for mother s day or cleaning the house without being asked or when I have seen them giving their last bit of pocket money to someone in need Also when your partner takes the dogs out for a walk when it was your turn and you weren t well and you didn t even need to ask him just as mine did last night and your elderly and loving parents who always seem to know what to do and say to make your life that bit better at just the right time What are you most looking forward to this Christmas I was reminded just last week by my 14 year old son of what our family is most looking forward to when he said Mum do you know what I m looking forward to the most this Christmas Just spending time with all the family doing our fun Christmas things It wasn t about presents for him it was about the gift of each other s time spending it together as a family and enjoying our precious time together creating memories that we will look back on and cherish Now that is a gift that you can t wrap up My hope and prayer for you and your family this Christmas is that the spirit of giving is alive and well as is the true meaning of Christmas with much Blessings of course there are also gifts that are special but need a little bit of money such as 18 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA T H E F E S T I V E E D I T I O N Lynnewritten with love

FAMILY LAW Habitual Residence of Children and Relocation When parents separate and live in different countries there may be a very difficult decision to be made about where the children live and what effect a change of residence has on them The laws in Europe and most other countries focus on the habitual residence of the children The decision on where the children have their residence is based on a factual investigation For example a child might be in school in England but actually have a habitual residence in Spain Referring to European case law Justice Hayden in a Supreme Court ruling in England BA Minor EWHC 2174 stated in considering where the child is resident facts should be presented to show the child s day to day life and experiences family environment interests and hobbies friends etc and an appreciation of which adults are most important to the child The approach must always be child driven By far the best approach is for the lawyers to mediate a settlement so that the children have a fixed and stable arrangement spending time with each parent and keeping regular contact by phone skype and other means when they are with the other parent Relocation of the children may be the only and best option where the custodial parent has to leave Spain For parents currently living in Spain and having their habitual residence here they will have to seek a relocation order in this country if the other parent does not give their consent This does not mean that the child s residence cannot be changed as in some cases this may mean returning to the country of origin if there is no social family and economic support in the country where they are living For more information contact De Cotta Law info decottalaw net or call on 952 52 7014 family law for a confidential consultation 26 Complete Legal Services Specialists in Family Divorce Law Conflict over taking children overseas after a divorce Kidnapping and Child Abduction Divorce and Property Child Maintenance Head Office Centro Comercial Valdepinos 1 y 3 Urb Calypso 29649 Mijas Costa near Calahonda T 34 952 527 014 E family decottalaw net www decottalaw com Mijas Costa Coin Nerja Tenerife
