Greetings of peace and joy to you in thisJubilee Year of Hope!In 2024, we continued the journey ofPastoral Renewal which was marked byParish Renewal Gatherings and thestrengthening of Parish Renewal Teamsacross the Diocese. As we celebrated thefirst anniversary of this renewal initiativeon the feast of St. Francis of Assisi inOctober, we undertook one of the mostsignificant efforts of the year: thediocesan-wide Parish Survey. The Year II video focused on the fatigueand frustration the disciples experiencedafter a night of unsuccessful fishing. Yet,when Jesus called them to cast their netsagain—into deeper waters—theyresponded with trust. Their obedience ledto an abundant catch, a powerfulreminder of what happens when wesurrender our efforts of renewal to Christ. In many ways, 2024 reflected a similarstory in our diocese. It was a verydemanding year. Across our parishes andwithin the Diocese, there was a growingdesire for something more. Most Reverend William T. McGrattanBishop of Calgary“When he had finished speaking, he saidto Simon, ‘Put out into the deep waterand let down your nets for a catch.’ DUC IN ALTUM | LUKE 5:4-5Simon answered, ‘Master, we haveworked all night long but have caughtnothing. Yet if you say so, I will let downthe nets.’”And while the work was heavy, God’s grace alsocame in abundance transforming our offering ofservice. Looking back, we can now recognize thefruits that have come from our collective efforts.Through the contributions of individuals, families, parishes, Catholic schools, lay movements, andthe diocesan community as a whole, we haveseen evidence of the Lord at work among us.This impact report is more than a record ofactivities; it is a witness to what God can do whenwe trust Him—even when the path is uncertain orthe pastoral demands seem overwhelming.May these pages not only reflect our efforts butalso inspire in us renewed faith and gratitude. Letthem remind us that Christ continues to call usinto deeper waters—and that He is with us everystep of the way.Thank you for giving your "yes" to God and forresponding to His invitation to cast your nets intothe deep in the spirit of the renewal and forremembering that “You are called. You matter. You belong.”With gratitude and prayer,A MESSAGE FROM THE MOST REV. WILLIAM T. MCGRATTAN2024 Impact Report | Diocese of Calgary2

In 2024, 13 men continued formation for the priesthood in the Diocese ofCalgary, including two new seminarians who began their vocational path.PriesthoodIn 2024, we saw growth, innovation, anddeepened discernment as individualscourageously stepped forward to serveChrist and His Church.PriesthoodFormation*Shortfall covered by the Operations of the DioceseIn 2024, The Diocese of Calgary became the first diocese in Western Canada toimplement a newly required phase of formation in the preparation ofseminarians for ordination to the priesthood, as prescribed by the Dicastery for the Clergy of the Holy See. Having completed his Masters of Divinity and academic requirements, Peter An embarked upon what is known as the “Vocational Synthesis Phase” of formation. This involved being assigned by the Bishop to a parish different from his pastoral year placement where he was to engage in pastoral ministry under the guidance of a pastor-supervisor, but while also receiving ongoing formation from several other priest-mentors in the celebration of the sacraments. Promoting vocations is the responsibility of the whole Church. Together, we foster a culture oflistening, encouragement, and courageous response to God’s call.RAISEDSPENT$151,775$304,681*20222023RAISEDSPENT$394,413$393,091Seminarians(two newseminarians)TransitionalDeaconCandidates Aspirants2024 Impact Report | Diocese of Calgary24

Many parishionersare grateful for their years of service, especially as pastors. For fellow priests, they offer guidance and can step inwhen others are on holiday. Some live in residence at parishes, others at Dorchester Square—apartments owned by the Diocese—and some on their own, supported byfamily or benefactors. For those needing more care, Bishop Henry—who passedaway in Dec 2024—left a lasting legacy: the St. JohnVianney Wing at Providence Care Centre. He saw the needfor a Catholic facility where priests could receive nursingcare while living in community. Previously, priests who were sick moved between nursinghomes as beds became available. In 2024, parishes across the Diocese ofCalgary launched their first RenewalGatherings, each shaped by theircommunity’s needs. Whether throughlarge events, small meetings after Mass,or ministry gatherings, every effortfostered deep listening and meaningfulpresence among parishioners. You are called. Youmatter. You belong.A major milestone was the Parish Renewal Teams'orientation on Feb 10, 2024, uniting nearly 300members from over 44 parishes across fourlocations. Through prayer, testimonies, anddiscussion, teams were inspired to deepen faithand lead their communities in the renewaljourney.Launching Parish RenewalGatherings across the DioceseRecognizing that renewal must be rooted in each parish’s unique reality,a major 2024 initiative was the launch of parish-wide surveys across theDiocese. These surveys captured the hopes, needs, and concerns ofparishioners, with results also combined to reveal diocesan-wide trends. Here are some highlights, organized under the three priorities of renewal.A Blessed Beginning: Parish RenewalTeams Orientation in February 2024Incredibly, 20,005 people in the Diocese filled out the survey. Approximately 15% of respondents were from ages 18-34 while 55% werebetween the ages of 35-64, and 31% were age 65+. Of these, 56% ofrespondents are immigrants to Canada, while 44% are Canadian born.Bur first, whoresponded tothe Survey?St. Luke, CalgarySt. Albert the Great,CalgarySt. Martha’s, LethbridgeHoly Family, Medicine HatDiocesan Renewal Survey in 20242024 Impact Report | Diocese of Calgary47

Page 48

Diocesan Survey Weekend at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, CalgaryForming Missionary DisciplesA positive highlight from this section of the survey isthat 62% of respondents believe that their parish offersevents and opportunities that they can invite nonparishioners to attend. This is helpful for missionactivity, in that if we do go out to invite a new soul, there is something to invite them to. However, it wasalso noted that just 42% of respondents “regularly takepart in parish activities that reach out to the widercommunity.” If we are to fulfill the great commission,we will need to activate more disciples in thecommunity.St. Albert theGreat, CalgaryAll Saints Parish,LethbridgeWhile there is room for improvement, 79% ofrespondents feel supported by their parish inhelping to form the faith of their children. Thiscontinues to be an extremely important area ofparish life as 46% of respondents cited “Engagefamilies and youth meaningfully” as a toppriority for pastoral life. More can always bedone to engage youth, especially during theteenage years. The good news in this section of the survey is that62% of respondents believe that their faith practiceand spiritual growth is improving while only 5%believe it is declining. This means that our parishesare largely feeding the souls of their parishioners. On the other hand, we learned that only 23% ofrespondents regularly invite someone to attendmass or a parish based event, this means we needto place a much greater focus on evangelizationand mission.PARISH LIFEBEING RENEWEDThe Five AreasofCommunityWitness & ServiceWordWorshipLeadership &StewardshipPRIORITY 1Strengthen Family LifePRIORITY 3Be a Church of Encounter and Mission PRIORITY 22024 Impact Report | Diocese of Calgary48

Thereport was also paired with a detailed ParishRenewal Survey report, and one organizedaround the key ministry areas: Community,Word, Worship, Witness & Service, andLeadership & Stewardship.Parish Profile Binder &Renewal Survey ReportsIn December 2024, Renewed in Hope broughtinspiring speakers to every parish across the Diocesethrough live-streamed talks in parish gatherings. Brett Powell, Bishop Scott McCaig, and Mary RoseBacani Valenti challenged us to deepen our faith, strengthen family life, and live as missionarydisciples. It was a powerful step in renewing hope andunity in our communities. On Oct 4, 2024, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Diocese enteredYear 2 of Pastoral Renewal, beginning the crucial foundation forParish Renewal Planning phase. A new video was released, inviting the faithful to "cast into the deep,"as Jesus called Peter to trust despite fear and uncertainty. Amidchallenges and divisions, we are reminded that through faith, we arecalled to transform our lives and renew our communities.Year II Kickoff of theDiocesan Pastoral Renewal“Believe in the work that the Lord has entrusted to us, in thepastoral renewal in our parishes, and in our Diocese.” ~Bishop McGrattanRenewed in Hope: ParishRenewal Advent Mission2024 Impact Report | Diocese of Calgary49
