I’m writing this from an airport. I love working from an airport. Airports and hotellobbies are my favorite places to work. I like the anonymity of it. When I see peopleworking on their laptops in those environments, I wonder who they are. I wonderwhat they do. I wonder if they live locally or if they flew in from across the countryfor a big presentation, a job interview, or a meeting with a client. Of course, I don’t work in corporate America, so I don’t find myself flying acrossthe country for work very often. But, when I do, and I start working from that hotellobby, I wonder if people wonder the same about me. Looking at what I usuallywear, I don’t imagine anybody would think that I’m anything special or important. After all, I wear sneakers, not heels, and I carry a backpack, not a briefcase. Believe it or not, I can spot a librarian from across an airport gate. I don’t know thatI can explain how other than, “It takes one to know one.” Can other librarians spotme as well? Do they know? Is it possible I’m not as anonymous as I think I am?I suppose I’ll lose all anonymity when I pull out my issue of Library Journal on theplane. People will either think I’m a huge library nerd or a librarian. What will theythink of me if they know I’m the latter? I suppose they’ll assume I read a lot. Theymight guess that I’m quiet. They might think I’m super intellectual. Wrong. Theseare all librarian stereotypes, and I don’t fit any of them! I’m just a regular personwho found a profession that I love.
