I believe in the transformative power of libraries. I always have. In grad school, Iwas torn between two directions in my career: public libraries or prison libraries. Icompleted two internships working with offenders before deciding my heart waswith the public. One of the projects I did was organizing a writing contest for offenders at the FoxLake Correctional Institution in Fox Lake, Wisconsin. Contest entries could besubmitted in three categories: poems, short stories, or autobiographical sketches.Prizes would be awarded in all three categories. When I had all of the submissions in my possession, I invited some friends over tohelp me read through them and determine the winners. The biographical sketcheswere our favorites. They were fascinating. These men had stories to tell. There are over 2,000 offenders housed in the three correctional facilities inPendleton. I guarantee that every one of them has a story. Some of those stories wedon’t want to hear. Some we will never hear. But maybe there are some stories weshould hear.Thankfully, there are those who want to share their stories of incarceration and whatlife has been like for them, after being released. They want to talk, and some of uswant to listen. On Saturday, November 9th at 2 p.m., the library, in a partnership with StorytellingArts of Indiana, will present “Hear Our Stories: The Life and Afterlife ofIncarceration.” This event is for mature audiences, 18+, and registration isappreciated.Lynn HobbsLibrary DirectorFROM THE DIRECTOR2
