Lynn HobbsLibrary DirectorI’m a musician. More specifically, I’m a flute player. Even more specifically, I’m a bass fluteplayer. Most people don’t even know such a thing exists, but it does. And it sounds really, really cool. You see, I like instruments that aren’t your run-of-the mill kind, so when SallyChildress from Tri Kappa approached me a couple of months ago asking if the library might beinterested in installing an outdoor musical instrument park, I was intrigued. Sally is a member of Tri Kappa, a local sorority with a mission to “bring women together topromote charity, culture, and education.” Tri Kappa does a great job upholding that mission, and they’ve been doing it for the past 100 years. They have always been a strong supporter ofthe library, but they have also been dedicated to supporting the arts. The arts are timeless, sowhat a perfect focus for a 100th birthday celebration. Tri Kappa Chapter President Kris Clarksays, “For our 100th birthday, we wanted to leave a legacy that would inspire future generationsto enjoy the arts and share joy with one another.” And that’s where the musical instrumentscome in.This summer, Tri Kappa is celebrating their 100th birthday by partnering with the library tobuild an outdoor instrument park. People of all ages can stroll past the library and try their handat creating music, either alone, or with others. Surprise a friend with your version of HappyBirthday. Create your own original composition. Experiment with tone, rhythm, and pitch. Orjust have some musical fun! This June, Tri Kappa will officially celebrate their birthday, and will unveil the musicalinstrument park. In the meantime, if you are interested in contributing to the legacy of this TriKappa project, contact Sally Childress at salchildress@yahoo.com. I’ll look forward to seeing you (and hearing you) in the musical park this summer!FROM THE DIRECTOR2All library collections and services remain available to reciprocalborrowers, including e-books and audiobooks on BEGINNING IN MARCH, WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE FORRECIPROCAL BORROWERS
