Sometimes I need a little inspiration to come up with a topic for my monthly newsletter. But when June hits, it’s a no-brainer. It’s June, and it’s time to kick off the library’s annualsummer reading program! This year, the theme is Color Our World. From June 1 – July 12, you can track your readingand earn prizes. No matter your age, there is something for you. From a children’s foamparty, a teen color run, and a family escape room to summer solstice yoga, paintingprograms, and saxophone storytime—we’re making summer artsy, colorful, and vibrant. The thing to remember heading into this summer is that reading can be fun. We especiallywant students to discover reading for pleasure as they take the summer off from the rigorsof required reading in school.Summer reading is about reading because you want to. It’s having special momentsreading on the beach or cozied up on a stormy night. When you read for pleasure, you get topick a book for yourself—somebody else doesn’t pick it for you. You can take what youwant out of it, and not what you think you might be tested on. When I was in high school, Iread with a dictionary by my side. In college, I read with a highlighter in my hand. Thatmade reading not fun, and sometimes it took my local library’s summer reading programto remind me that reading could actually be enjoyable again.Have fun with us this summer by joining the library’s summer reading program. Install theBeanstack app or go to pendleton.beanstack.org and find this summer’s challenges for thePendleton Community Public Library. If you already have a login, you can pick up rightwhere you left off. It’s easy to get started and rediscover the pleasure of reading!See you on Beanstack!Lynn HobbsLibrary DirectorLynn HobbsFROM THE DIRECTOR
