Not too long ago, I came across a quiz that showed various TV sets to see if you couldidentify them. I scrolled through living rooms from Seinfeld, The Jeffersons, The BradyBunch, and Three’s Company, among others. I did pretty well on that quiz because I’vespent hours in those living rooms. It got me thinking about the living rooms that are in my imagination that develop withinthe pages of a book. Where do those come from? The kitchens and living rooms thatfictional book characters live in are spaces I’ve never actually seen with my own eyes. Yet,the floor plans make perfect sense. The houses usually have two stories, and the furnitureis always retro for some reason. One of my imaginary living rooms even has woodenpaneling. My brain reuses these living spaces from book to book, and it is a curiosity of mine why Ipick one over the other the very first time my mind has to establish a setting. Why did I pickthe kitchen with the ceiling mounted cabinets over the one with the open floor plan? Eventhough it’s my imagination, I have no idea why it works the way it does.I’m sure it’s the same for you. When you think of a good book, you can actually picture it.You can visualize the scenes, and nobody else’s visual is the same as yours. Nobodyinterprets things the same way. That’s why discussing books is a great way to share yourperspective and learn how others interpret the very same thing. As we wrap up our summer reading program, Color Our World, I am reminded how readingcolors our world by coloring our minds with vibrant characters, settings, and plotlines, individual to each of us on a very personal level. When you discover a book, you alsodiscover a little bit about yourself. Lynn HobbsLibrary DirectorLynn HobbsFROM THE DIRECTOR
