FROM THE DIRECTORI am always appreciative of the unique skills of my staff. Today I am particularlyappreciative of Rhonda, our resident “Salamander Wrangler.” Earlier this week, our Assistant Director, Matthew, sent an email to all staff. He wasalerting us to the presence of a black salamander who snuck in the staff door last Saturday. The message said that we’ve seen it on and off over the past few days, and that he was lastseen BY MY OFFICE! Oh goodie! I don’t love spiders, but I’d be okay with a spider. Likewise with a mouse. But, anything inthe reptile family is going to send me running for the hills. So, over the next few days, Ichecked every nook and cranny in my office before taking my regular post at my desk.Every time I left my office and then came back in, I’d stomp my feet, hoping I’d scare himinto some corner where he would never venture out and decide to crawl up my leg. I never did see him, and by the time Thursday rolled around, I figured he was long gone. But, no. I found him…IN MY DESK. After letting out an embarrassing little grunt-screamsound that I don’t think I’ve ever made before, I made a beeline for Rhonda. Rhonda is ourChildren’s Librarian, and she is not at all afraid of anything creepy crawly. In fact, she lovesall critters, and thinks salamanders are “cute.” She was actually excited to take on“Operation Salamander,” and I told her to have at it. About an hour later, I heard her squeals of delight as she finally retrieved him from myoffice and released him outside. I made sure to watch that last part so I could feel thatmuch-needed sense of relief and gratitude wash over me. It’s great to have staff withvaried skills, but the best part is that they enjoy using those skills to help people like you….and thankfully, me.Lynn HobbsLibrary DirectorLynn Hobbs
