The other day, I was checking out in Needler’s. I would guess the employee helping me was ateenager. She was chatty, and I enjoyed the friendly way she had about her. At one point, I sawher glance at my shirt which had the library’s logo on it. She asked if I worked at the library andwhen I said yes, her eyes got wide, and she replied, “Cool.” This is not the reaction I wasexpecting, but oh did it ever make me smile! Fast forward to that same evening when I am on the phone with an old friend who is coming tovisit this weekend. She lives on the East Coast and doesn’t get to Indy often. I asked her if therewas anything special she’d like to do, and she said, “I want to see your library.” When I offeredan “after-hours tour” she said, “Cool.” That’s twice in one day that I heard the word “cool” in the context of the library. What gives? Well, as it turns out, the library IS cool. Who knew? Well, I knew. And, my staff knows. Ourpatrons have a pretty good idea. But what about the people who don’t know? How do we getthem to discover how cool the library is these days? That is the million dollar question I’ve beenasking myself for the past 20 years! To help it along, the library signed on to become a Cooling Center. So when it gets hotter thanblazes outside, you can chill out at the library. You can literally cool in a place that’sfiguratively cool. And that little play on words, my friends, is my message to you today. Thelibrary is cool (in more ways than one)!Lynn HobbsLibrary DirectorFROM THE DIRECTOR2CLOSURE NEXT MONTHThe library will be closedon Monday, September 2ndin observance of Labor Day.
